Ex-Taraba Gov. Suntai buried amidst eulogies, tears

The remains of the former Governor of Taraba, Danbaba Suntai was laid to rest on Saturday in his hometown, Suntai in Bali Local Government Area of the state amidst tears and eulogies.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a cross section of Nigerians, who were touched by the late governor’s kind gesture and sterling leadership qualities, could not hold their tears as they gave their testimonies of his legacies.

One of them, Gov. Darius Ishaku of Taraba, described the late Suntai, as an epitome of humility with a great sense of humour and passion for the development of the state.

Ishaku, however, thanked all Nigerians, especially those who stood by the late governor during his trying moment and in death.

He said that the love they showed him was a great source of strength to the family and the people of the state.

The governor urged Suntai’s family to be consoled by the legacies and virtues of the late icon, who he said would be remembered by people for what he believed and stood for.

Earlier, Gov. Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti urged the people of Taraba to imbibe the virtues of Suntai.

Fayose said they should imbibe his virtues and continue to promote the good things he stood for while alive for the development of the state and country.

In his remarks, Gov. Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe said the late governor did well for the people of the state.

The President of the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria (LCCN), Most Rev. Musa Philibus, at the funeral service, enjoined Nigerians to live a life of service to humanity.

Philibus said that Nigerians should bear in mind that all must die to give an account of their stewardship to God.

“There is glory and happiness in death when we live a life that pleases God.

“We should think about pleasing God rather thinking of how to bring others down in order to get to the top,’’ he said.

NAN reports that the funeral was attended by dignitaries from all walks of life, including Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau and the immediate past governor of Benue State, Dr. Gabriel Suswam.

Others were the First Executive Governor of Taraba, Rev. Jolly Nyame, the pioneer military governor of Taraba CP Ambrose Afolahan, representatives of the governors of Adamawa, Benue and Nasarawa as well as some National Assembly members among others.

The deceased, who was aged 55, died on June 28, in the USA where he was recuperating from the treatment he sustained injuries when a private aircraft he was flying crashed on October 25, 2012, in Yola.

He was the governor of the state between 2007 and 2015.

  • Ekiti 2018: Nothing will make me defect to PDP, says Ex-Gov. Oni

Ekiti 2018: Nothing will make me defect to PDP, says Ex-Gov. Oni

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Deputy National Chairman (South), Mr Olusegun Oni, has denied holding secret meetings with leaders of the opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) to achieve his 2018 gubernatorial ambition in Ekiti.

Oni, also a former governor of Ekiti, said his while addressing a news conference in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday.

He said that he had never had a one-on-one with the PDP National Caretaker Committee Chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Makarfi in his life.

He also denied holding any secret meetings with Gov. Ayodele Fayose at any  hotel in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oni was reacting to rumours that he was holding secret meetings to discuss the possibility of crossing over to the PDP to realise his 2018 gubernatorial ambition.

Oni had recently declared his intention to contest the next gubernatorial seat in the state, as the tenure of the current administration will end in October, 2018, while the election is expected to hold by mid 2018.

He decried what he called “attacks from within” by those allegedly uncomfortable with his ambition to vie for the governorship seat next year.

He alleged that some people had been assigned  to pull him down by all means, saying the alleged attacks were  only making him to become  more popular.

Oni, who said he was not desperate to become governor again, stressed that the fates all of all aspirants jostling for the party’s ticket would be decided by delegates at the party’s primary.

The APC deputy national chairman, South, also denied holding any meeting with the PDP National Caretaker Committee Chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Makarfi in Ifaki Ekiti in Ido/Osi Local Government Area.

The former governor urged his supporters and the people of the state not to believe the rumour and hate  campaign being mounted against him by people he described as “faceless individuals” on the social media.

He said that such rumours would not distract him, but make him to be more focused on selling his ideas on how he intended to make Ekiti better to the electorate

“Some individuals have written a petition against me to the party’s national secretariat demanding that I step down immediately as Deputy National Chairman (South).

“But, it is like these individuals have forgotten that the party’s constitution allows me to remain in that post until one month before the primaries.

“The attacks are from within the party and most of them are coming from the social media, but I am not bothered at all because whatever that will be good will be rough initially.

“I am very much aware that some people have been given the assignment to pull me down, but I put my trust in God and at the end, good will triumph over the evil.

“I want to say categorically that I will not be discouraged.

“Anybody who does not want Oni will either contest against him or support any aspirant. I am not desperate to be governor, and I will leave (my post) when the (party) constitution says I should leave.

“By saying that I met Fayose in a hotel in Lagos and Makarfi in my house in Ifaki-Ekiti, these people are over rating me and I feel honoured.

“The last one-on-one I had with Gov.Fayose was a day after Gen. Adebayo was buried when I brought the invitation from the Borisade family to officially notify him of his demise and to also congratulate him on the honour done Baba Adebayo.

“I have never had a one-on-one with Makarfi and if they are saying he was in my home, I feel honoured.

“Those saying this have nothing to sell, but I have told my people not to abuse or attack anybody; if they have the product that is sellable, they should continue to sell it,” he said.

  • N50m given to federal lawmakers to support Obasanjo’s third term-Fayose

N50m given to federal lawmakers to support Obasanjo’s third term-Fayose

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has not spoken with President Muhammadu Buhari in the last two years.

Fayose, who has been critical of the President, especially on his state of health before election and after his inauguration, said he refused to speak with the President’s security chief to whom his calls to the Presidential Villa were diverted because he considered it an “insult”.

He also spoke on ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Third term bid, how the late President Umaru Yar’Adua was picked as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in 2007, among other issues, in an interview published by The Interview magazine.

He said: “Well, we met twice or so during the Council of State meetings. There is nothing personal. I represent Ekiti State, he represents Nigeria. That is the basis of our interaction. Nothing personal.

Asked if he had said as much as ‘hello’ to the President, Fayose added: “No.”

“For me, during our meeting, whenever any issue arose and I felt I should make a contribution, I raised my hand and spoke. That is it.

“I remember I tried to call him several times before he took ill. Then, there was this day I called again and the switchboard told me that any call from me must be diverted to President Buhari’s Chief Security Officer (CSO). And I felt that was very insulting.

“The CSO to the President is an ordinary policeman, who I assume, is just a little over and above my own CSO. I am a governor, a governor of a state. I felt that was an insult to the people of Ekiti State I represent.

“Yes my calls to him (the President) were diverted twice to the CSO. I refused to talk to the CSO because I consider it insulting.”

On the aborted Third Term agenda of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Fayose said bribed were offered.

He said while the principal officers of the National Assembly in 2006 got N100million each, the other lawmakers were given N50million each.

He alleged that the former President knelt down for the late Libyan leader Mouamar Ghaddaffi to seek his backing for Third Term.

He also said Obasanjo knew about the ill-health of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua before he was picked as PDP candidate.

Fayose said: “Yes it is true. The people I am going to mention here, two of the key players are now dead. That position of Presidential Selection Committee that I headed was set up by all PDP governors. Initially, they wanted Dr. Olusegun Agagu. Then, the majority insisted that they wanted Fayose. So, since the majority wanted me, Baba (Olusegun Obasanjo) invited me to Ota and encouraged me to go ahead. I remember the committee was made up of Governors Danjuma Goje, Ahmed Makarfi, Bukola Saraki, James lbori, me and one other person who I cannot remember now. I want to tell you that, at some point, the majority of the committee was more disposed to having Markafi as the presidential nominee. l and one other person were the only dissenters

“So, as a loyal Obasanjo boy then, I went to Obasanjo and told that this committee that was set up, everybody seemed to prefer Markafi except me and one other person and we were in the minority.

“Five out of seven governors wanted Makarfi. Then Obasanjo pointedly told me that Markafi was too smart and would not be easily controlled by him and, therefore, I must ensure that Markafi did not emerge the presidential candidate. He mandated me to be briefing him often about the way things were going.

“He confided in me that whether it was Markafi or anybody that he was not prepared to leave. At that time, the Third Term agenda had begun to unfold in Abuja. I can tell you that l was co-opted into the secret committee that was behind it. In that body, we had had this senator from Plateau, Ibrahim Mantu, Senator Andy Uba and many others. We were the key players. Let me tell you the truth: at that time, I did not have a choice. l was just a young man without experience.

“…The Senators started at about 11am in the morning and by 1 pm each senator was asked to stand up and say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ before live television coverage whether they supported Third Term or not, and the majority had their way. So Obasanjo’s dream of Third Term was shut down. Thereafter, he called a national meeting of PDP, termed reconciliation meeting and denied that he asked or worked for Third Term.

“Meanwhile, before that time, N50 million was given to every federal lawmaker to support Third Term. The majority collected the money and still voted against Third Term. Principal officers got N100 million each. Where did that huge sum of money come from?”

Fayose opened up on the politics behind the choice of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua as a presidential candidate of PDP.

He said the current Chairman of the PDP, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi was sidelined in favour of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua.

He added: “Let me now come to the Yar’Adua issue. Obasanjo now called me and said, ‘Now that Third Term has failed, you should go ahead with the PDP committee. And in order for me to check those rooting for Markafi, I should go and sound Yar’Adua out on the ticket. He told me, ‘Don’t tell him I asked you to come. You psyche him up’. So, l met Yar’Adua in his lodge in Katsina. I met Yar’Adua in the company of Yakubu Tanimu (who became his influential chief economic adviser) and his police orderly.

“I remember that while our interaction lasted, the orderly knelt down close to Yar’Adua. I acted as directed by Obasanjo, but the man told me expressly that he was not well enough to aspire to be Nigerian president; that the job would be too rigorous for him.

“After much persuasion, he then told me the only condition under which he might consider running was if all stakeholders would sign up and reach an agreement to pick him as the consensus candidate because he did not want any hassles.”

He said: “ I remember, before then, Yar’Adua was hardly attending Council of State meetings because of his health. So, l went to tell Baba what Yar’Adua told me. On the issue of Yar’Adua’s ill-health. I remember Obasanjo told me, ‘Don’t worry about his sickness; government money dey to manage his ill-health.’ Baba told me to go and put the outcome of my interaction with Yar’Adua in writing.

“Then Masari became the first loser; because, until then, Bello Masari as the Speaker of House of Reps was very loyal to Baba and did all the dirty jobs Baba wanted him to do, with the promise that he would be made the next Katsina governor after Yar’Adua. But once Yar’Adua became anointed as PDP candidate, he preferred Shema to be his successor. That was one of the conditions he listed. That was how a wedge came between Yar’Adua and Masari.

“That was the genesis of the rift between Shema and Masari up until today. Shema was then the deputy national chairman of PDP. That was how Masari defected to CPC. What I am trying to say is that Obasanjo engineered all the bitterness that exists in Katsina politics today.”

    Ekiti promotes 9,583 public servants

The Ekiti State Government on Sunday said that it had just promoted 9,583 out of its public servants.

6,993 of them are teaching and non-teaching staff of various public secondary schools, while 2,590 are local government staff.

The Chairman of the State Teaching Service Commission, Chief Abiodun Falayi said in a statement that 3,963 teachers and 1,586 non-teaching staff were promoted.

Falayi said that the Gov Ayodele Fayose-led administration inherited what he called abnormalities in cadres, unharmonized structure as well as inaccurate nominal roll and seniority list.

He said that all complaints lodged by affected workers were considered and rectified in the course of the exercise.

He said that all issues relating to adjustment of inter-cadre transfer and conversion had also been settled.

According him, the interview process was decentralized into six zones for administrative convenience and to ensure that it did not unduly interfere with academic activities in schools where they were conducted.

He said that the promotion was conducted to motivate workers as well as engender efficiency and effectiveness within the public service.

He, therefore, charged the workers to reciprocate government’s gesture by living up to their responsibilities.

They should also support the state government’s efforts to improve the public service, stressing that they should make diligence and dedication to duty their watchwords.

  • The battle we fought was not for PDP alone – Makarfi

The battle we fought was not for PDP alone – Makarfi

Leaders and key stakeholders in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are excited over yesterday’s victory of the Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee at the Supreme Court.

After consultations, the stakeholders declared that with the victory over Sheriff, the PDP is poised to reclaim the presidency in 2019.

Describing the victory as one for democracy and the people, Makarfi said it also signified the supremacy of party men and women to decide their destiny.

Said he: “This victory is not just for PDP; it’s for democracy. This affirms the powers of political parties. This affirms the powers of the convention of all political parties.

“The battle we fought was not a battle for PDP alone. It was a battle for democracy; it was a battle for supremacy of party men and women to decide their destiny. And it’s a battle to do away with dictatorship in political parties and this will never repeat itself.

“We thank the rest of party men and women across Nigeria for their loyalty and steadfastness. We must thank and appreciate the judiciary for the wonderful job it has done. We never lost faith in the judiciary. We have always been saying that ultimately justice will be done.”

Makarfi said the party’s doors would remain open for reconciliation with Sheriff and other aggrieved members, including those that dumped the PDP during the crisis.

“We must be open to reconciliation. But there’s a caveat: reconciliation does not mean we take what belongs to people and give it to you. Reconciliation must be based on equity, equality, and values.

“With this caveat, we should be prepared and willing to reconcile with everybody. Anybody that can meet these criteria, we should be willing and open to reconciliation with such a person no matter who they are.

“And I assured you that those who have been waiting for this judgment were not just PDP. The whole of Nigeria today was waiting for this judgment. And the eagle has landed.

“We are going to consult within the next two to three days. And come up with a programme of meetings between  Monday and  Tuesday. And these meetings will include Expanded Caucus, BoT and NEC so that we can take some far-reaching decisions on how to take the party forward,” Makarfi added.

He called on Muslims and Christians to continue to pray for ailing President Muhammadu Buhari and PDP BoT Chairman, Senator Walid Jibrin, who suffered a stroke about two days ago.

To Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, the judgment has placed the party in good stead to return to power in 2019.

According to him, the party would make maximum use of its resurgence. Power, he said, has remained dormant under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

    Fayose

He chided the ruling party for what he described as its inability to sustain the power given to it by Nigerians in the 2015 elections, saying “today is a new dawn for Nigeria”.

Fayose, who spoke in Abuja after the judgment, said governance would take its rightful place under the leadership of the PDP.

The governor also said the Makarfi camp would not engage Sheriff and his loyalists in any further struggle, but efforts would be made to reconcile them with the new leadership.

Fayose pleaded for unity and cooperation with the Makarfi leadership. He cautioned against mutual suspicion and mistrust that triggered the crisis in the first place.

Said he: “I urge us to support the Makarfi-led committee. The committee cannot please all of us. So please, let us stop suspecting ourselves. Some will lead, some will follow. So let’s give the committee support.”

Former ministers described the judgment as one of the most celebrated cases in the nation’s history.

Addressing reporters in Abuja, the chairman of the Forum Tanimu said: “The judgment is hope for democracy. The opposition will continue to survive. Without opposition, those in government won’t be able to sit up and do the work that is expected of them.”

“I salute your commitment to democracy and good governance out there and we say keep on doing the good work in spite of the adversities being faced.”

Governor Fayose said he was impressed with the achievements of the Benin Monarch within a few months.

He said, “You are royal and it fits you and some people occupy royal thrones but the seats don’t  fit them. I watched in close quarters your activities and I am impressed.

“Our traditional and culture can’t be wished away. Education, knowledge and wisdom are vital to our human existence. I left office in controversial circumstances on Oct 16 2006 and came back exactly eight years after

“I represent the belief that this country must stay unite in justice as without justice there would be no peace. I want to stay close to this palace and be an asset to it. You are a man of this generation and your support and advice would be invaluable

Trial of Fayose’s ally: Court chides Ozekhome over delay

…Court admits more evidence against Nyako in N29bn fraud trial

A Federal High Court in Abuja has frowned at the conduct of a defence lawyer in the trial of Abiodun Agbele, an aide to Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose.

Agbele is charged alongside a former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro (who was arraigned in absentia), Sylvan Mcnamara Limited, A. O. Adewale, Tunde Oshinowo and Olalekan Ogunseye on 11-count charge in which they are accused of laundering about N1.2 billion.

The money is said to be part of the N4.7billion allegedly transferred from the imprest account of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), to the bank account of Sylvan McNamara, a company allegedly owned by Obanikoro’s son.

At the last proceedings on May 24, 2017 the court ordered Agbele’s lawyer, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), who had applied orally to withdraw appearance for the second defendant – Sylvan McNamara – to file a formal application to that effect within three days and serve copies on other parties in the case.

Yesterday, Ozekhome was absent, but sent a junior, Godwin Iyinbor, who informed the court that his principal were yet to serve the application as ordered by the court.

An infuriated lead prosecution lawyer, Wahab Shittu said: “this is a calculated attempt by the learned silk (Ozekhome) to frustrate the trial process and it should be discouraged”.

Shittu described the development as unhealthy. He noted that the prosecution has consistently produced its witnesses to court at great cost.

Another defence lawyer, Olalekan Ojo also wrote the court that he was attending an interview for the award of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) slated for Monday and Tuesday at the Supreme Court and sought for an adjournment.

Trial judge, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba granted Ojo’s application, but frowned at Ozekhome’s conduct.

He ordered service of the application by Ozekhome on parties before the next adjourned date and adjourned to October 12 and 13, 2017.

Meanwhile, Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja yesterday admitted in evidence documents tendered by the prosecution in the trial of a former governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako.

Nyako is standing trial on a 37-count charge of conspiracy, stealing, abuse of office and money laundering to the tune of N29billion. He is being tried with his son, Senator Abdul-Aziz Nyako, Abubakar Aliyu and Zulkifikk Abba.

Companies that allegedly served as conduit pipes for the illegal diversion of the funds are – Pagoda Fortunes Limited, Tower Assets Management Limited and Crust Energy Limited.

One of the documents tendered by the prosecution yesterday, through the 12th prosecution witness, Caroline Utsaha, showed that N80million deposit was made in a day in the name of Blue Opal Limited; one of the companies allegedly used by the former governor to siphon the state funds.

The documents tendered and admitted in evidence include: Letter dated July 21, 2014, captioned “Re-Investigation Activities”, with the account name – Blue Opal Limited – Exhibit H1.

Letter dated August 15, 2014, captioned “Re-Investigation Activities”, with the account name – Opal Corporate Limited – Exhibit H2.

Letter dated February 26, 2015, captioned “Re-Investigation Activities”, with the account name – Crust Energy Limited, and was admitted as Exhibit H3.

Led in evidnce by lead prosecuting lawyer, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), Utsaha, a Relationship Manager with First Bank said: “In 2014, the EFCC wrote our Bank, requesting for details of the accounts packages and statements of accounts of three accounts.

“The accounts were: Blue Opal Limited, Opal Corporate Limited and Crust Energy Limited. I got all they requested and did a forwarding letter to the Commission and also did an identification letter, indicating that the statements and all the documents are from First Bank.”

When asked to look at Exhibit H1 and tell the court about the transactions therein, the witness said, “The entries here are series of deposits of Zenith bank cheque”.

She went on: “On March 29, 2012, there were eight deposits of Zenith bank cheque of N10million each. The deposits were done on the same day”.

Justice Abang later adjourned to July 4, 2017 for the continuation of hearing.

  • Buhari recovering from illness – APC

Buhari recovering from illness – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) said on Friday that President Muhammadu Buhari is fast recovering from his illness contrary to allegations that he is on life support.

The National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, gave the assurance in Abuja while speaking with newsmen at the end of a meeting between the party`s National Working Committee (NWC) and state governors elected on the party’s platform.

“We are glad to inform you that President Muhammadu Buhari is recovering in a very robust manner.

“We hope he takes it easy and when he comes back, I have no doubt at all that we will have a new and active period of activities.’’

He, however, said only the president’s doctors abroad could decide when he would be fit to return to the country.

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, had recently alleged that President Buhari was on life-support in a London Hospital where he is receiving medical attention.

The APC chairman, however, refused to respond to the governor’s comment, saying he would do that at an appropriate time.

“If I respond, I will be dignifying him.

“At the appropriate time, people will answer him; at the appropriate level; at the appropriate time.

“He is in a different world altogether,’’ Oyegun stated.

According to him, the party’s leadership has confidence in President Buhari.

He added that the meeting x-rayed the nation, ongoing agitation for its restructuring and inciting statements emanating from different parts of the country.

Oyegun stressed that such inciting statements are not good “for the nation`s health and have to be stopped.”

According to him, the party maintains its earlier position on the restructuring of the country as clearly stated in its manifesto.

He further said the party’s leadership would do all it could at all times to ensure that the unity of the country was preserved.

  • Fayose holds rally on 2014 election victory

Fayose holds rally on 2014 election victory

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose yesterday held a street rally on the third year anniversary of his victory in the June 21, 2014 governorship election.

The governor announced his readiness to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari, after the 2019 presidential poll.

Fayose said he would contest the 2018 governorship poll and win before taking another shot at the Presidency in 2019.

The governor said the All Progressives Congress (APC) would be crushed in the two elections.

But the John Kayode Fayemi (JKF) Centre, a leadership and training centre, said “the ghost of the 2014 electoral fraud would continue to haunt Fayose”.

The centre said the third anniversary was a celebration of fraud and misery.

Fayose said Ekiti residents would always follow him to wherever he may go because of his achievements in almost three years in office.

The governor accused the APC-led Federal Government of not living up to their expectation.

Fayose addressed a crowd of party supporters from the 16 local government areas at the Government House before they trooped to the streets for the rally.

The supporters marched from Fajuyi Park to Ojumose and stopped at the popular Old Garage.

Fayose said: “The APC will be upset in 2018. We will crush them. That is why you have to be strong and firm. I am a leader in Nigeria and nobody can gag or cow me. This country belongs to all of us. Today, Nigerians are hungry and angry. There is so much nepotism and poverty in the land. So, this government must go.

“This victory march is meant to thank the people of Ekiti State and to finally break down the wall of Jericho. I know we shall triumph, for I have the people behind me. After winning, I am going to Abuja to be President of Nigeria. I will take power from Buhari in 2019. That shall come to pass.”

In a statement yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, by its Director, Biodun Omoleye, the JKF Centre said the circumstances that threw up Fayose as governor had continued to haunt him with “devastating consequences on the polity”.

The statement said: “The ghost of electoral fraud that produced Fayose will continue to haunt him. This we can see in the social, infrastructure and economic decay plaguing Ekiti State.”
