    Sifon “Best” Iwatt and Saheed Azeez are talking tough  ahead  of  their  national super flyweight title at the forthcoming  GOtv Boxing Night 30,

    Both boxers will battle for the first title of their professional careers, at the event boxing fiesta, slated for the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, on December 26.

    Iwatt, whose impressive performance was lustily cheered by fans at GOtv Boxing Night 29, has been consistently dismissive of his opponent, branding him a boxer of no consequence.

    “I don’t know who Azeez is. He’s not the kind of opponent that can scare me. I see this as a big opportunity to become a national champion. This would be the first title of my career. Winning a title at the first attempt is a good way to start. I won my debut fight at GOtv Boxing Night the last time, so I want to win again and claim a title this time,” said Iwatt.

    Meanwhile, Azeez said he would use the fight to announce himself on the big stage.

     “It’s normal that people don’t know me. His nickname is ‘Best’, so this is the ‘Best’ opportunity to announce myself to Nigerians. It’s a title fight, not a joke. Being the best is not by name, it’s by showing it. That’s what I will teach him on Boxing Day,” he said.

    Also scheduled for the night is a West African Boxing Union (WABU) super welterweight title bout between Taiwo “Gentle Boy” Olowu, and Ghanaian boxer, Michael Ansah.

    Female national cruiserweight champion, Bolatito “Black Tito” Oluwole, will face Blessing Abisoye, in a national challenge fight. Arabambi Ojo and Ibrahim “Golden Boy” Opeyemi will square up in a national bantamweight challenge bout; Ayanfe Adeoye will face Ahmed Ganiyu in a national light welterweight category bout, while Abdulafeez “Big Name” Osoba will square up against Christopher Ucheji, in the national super welterweight category.

  • 2019 Spanish Open: Offiong, Azeez battle for spots in main draw

    Nigeria’s duo of Edem Offiong and Jamiu Azeez are in the race for places in the main draw of the singles event at the 2019 ITTF Challenge Spanish Open, holding at the Palacio Multiusos Guadalajara, North Central city of Spain.

    Offiong, drawn in Group 14 of the women’s singles qualifying round, was in fine form against Portugal’s Andrade Raquel. Despite losing first game at 8-11, Offiong recovered to record an emphatic win of 11-5, 11-5, 11-8 to claim a 3-1 win.

    Like his compatriot – Italy-based Azeez overwhelmed Moldova’s Cissa Victor with 11-4, 11-7, 11-6. They are expected to play their last group matches today to determine their qualification to the main draw.

    Germany’s Ruwen Filus was the runner up in Minsk in 2015 when beaten by Qatar’s Li Ping in the final, his highest finish to date at an open international tournament, and the German is the top seed in the men’s singles event at the 2019 ITTF Challenge Spanish Open.

    English Premier League outfit Swansea City are  interested in Unión Deportiva Almería defensive midfielder Ramon Azeez.

    Fichajes.net says according to reports in England, Swansea are interested in ending Azeez stay at the Estadio de los Juegos Mediterráneos.

    The Nigerian international, 21, joined the Rojiblancos in 2011 from Future Pro Academy and has enjoyed a productive time in Spain.

    He made his debut in the Spain LIGA BBVA on 30th August 2013, playing 20 minutes in a 2–2 home draw against Elche CF.

    On 21st December 2013, Azeez scored his first professional goal, netting the game’s only in a win at Real Betis. He repeated the feat in the second meeting between the two teams, scoring in the 94th minute for a 3–2 triumph at the Estadio de los Juegos.

    On 3rd February 2014, Azeez was called up to the Nigeria senior side for a friendly against Mexico. He made his debut on 5th March against the El Tri, playing the entire second-half in a 0–0 draw at the Georgia Dome.

    The former Flying Eagles skipper was named in the provisional 30-man squad of the Super Eagles ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

    He was included in Stephen Keshi’s final list for the tournament, and made his World Cup debut on 16th June by starting in a 0–0 draw against Iran.

    Ramon is currently on a deal with the Spanish club until June 2015 and will likely leave if a lucrative deal is tabled to his representatives.

    Azeez won’t quit Almeria

    Nigeria international Ramon Azeez is to spend at least another season at Spanish La Liga side Almeria, AfricanFootball.com has specially learnt.

    The 21-year-old midfielder featured at the recent World Cup in Brazil and was reported to be a top target of English Premier League side Swansea City this summer.

    However, he still has two more years left on his contract with the modest La Liga outfit and a very close confidant of the former U-17 and U-20 Nigeria star has now revealed Azeez will feature for Almeria in the coming season.

    Ramon still has two years left on his contract and he has told me he will at least play in the coming season for the club, the top source informed AfricanFootball.com.

    Almeria barely escaped relegation from La Liga last season with Azeez, drafted in from the reserves, popping up with some crucial goals and assists in the process.

    He played a total of 32 matches and scored two goals.

    The Spanish media, including the influential sports paper AS, had reported that Swansea City lodged a £2.4 million offer for the highly-rated youngster, who impressed in his breakthrough year in Spanish football last season.

    Almeria valuation of the player is around five million pounds now.

    Almeria of Spain midfielder, Ramon Azeez has thanked the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Coach Stephen Keshi for inviting him to the national team as preparation begins for the Brazil 2014 World Cup. He vows that he will not let the opportunity slip off his fingers.

    Similarly, Cercle Brugges of Belgium midfielder, Michael Uchebo, is convinced that he has a part to play in Nigeria’s quest for glory during the Mundial in Brazil. “The coach has told us that we have equal opportunity to make the team. If I am invited for the final phase of preparations, I will not disappoint my fans,” the Nwankwo Kanu look-alike said in Atlanta.

    Ex-junior international, Azeez said it had always been his ambition to play at the senior level and since he had been given the opportunity he would do his all to remain in the team. “I thank God for this invitation and I promise to do even better when next I am called up,” he declared.

    Head Coach Stephen Keshi while assessing the performance of his wards against Mexico, said it was fair but he was not too happy at the manner the players were easily losing the ball to their opponents. “I guess it’s because we have not played together for quite a while, but that will be addressed when camp opens for the World Cup. I know the quality of players we have in this team, they will surely go places.”

    ALThough Nigeria’s Beach Eagles ended the Morocco 2013 African Beach Soccer Championship without a place on the medal’s table, the country’s striker, Abu Azeez has emerged as the highest goal scorer with 12 goals.

    The Kwara United ace scored in all the Sand Eagles’ matches in what turned out to be a futile attempt to grab a World Cup ticket.

    According to the statistics made available to NationSport at the end of the competition, Moroccan player Nassim El Hadaoui was adjudged the Best Player of the five-day tournament, while El Seyni Ndiaye of Senegal, who let in 17 goals throughout the competition but made eye-catching saves, was named the Best Goalkeeper of the tournament.

    Senegal won the trophy for the second time in two years while Cote d’Iviore and Morocco grabbed second and third positions respectively. Nigeria could only place fourth after a 7-2 thrashing by the host.

    ALMERIA midfielder Ramon Azeez is hoping to make the best of the opportunity if he gets a call up by Nigeria’s coach Stephen Keshi as the battle to get a shirt for the 2013 Nations Cup gathers momentum.

    Azeez, a former Nigeria U21 captain, is enjoying the season with his club as they are placed second in the Spanish second division and he said he will grab with both hands the opportunity of playing in the team if an invitation is extended to him.

    “For now, I won’t want to say it’s going to be easy for me to just break into the team but I’m working hard to make sure that I improve on my game.

    “But If I get the chance to play in the Super Eagles, it will only make me a better player and I’m ready for the challenge,” he said.

    The midfielder who has also featured for Nigeria’s U-17 revealed excitement at the Super Eagles return to the Nations Cup with the conviction that Nigeria will qualify from their group which also have Zambia, Ethiopia and Burkina Faso.
