    Azimuth Junior Tennis meet in final stages

    The Azimuth Shipping Lines Junior Tennis Championships which began on Monday January 15 is gradually entering the final stages.

    Over 250 young tennis players are taking part in the tournament at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, Lagos.

    Stephen Owolabi Martins, the Managing Director of Azimuth Shipping Lines, sponsors of the meet, is excited over the turnout of players for the competition.

     “This is huge and since the start, the ongoing event should be one of the best in terms of numbers as we speak. We are happy that it is getting better with time,” Martins said.

    Meanwhile,  Mofifunoluwa Atilola defeated Ganiyu Mubarak/ 4/0, 4/0 easily to move into the quarterfinals of girls U-12 category just as Godwin Success also defeated Emeka Favour 4/1, 4/2 in the Boys cadre.

    Chimai Prosper also earned a last eight berth by beating Bridget Crown 5/3, 5/3 in a very tight and entertaining match of the Girls U-12 while Joy Emmanuel defeated Rasaki Mabubat 4/2,-4/2.

    Tournament Director, Jumoke Yakubu, told journalists that the technical team decided to adopt short sets format to accommodate the youngsters for the competition.

     “We do not want to send any of the players back for late registration and so we are using the short set format as you can see with the results.

     “The players are taking the competition so seriously and we are enjoying every bit of it in terms of contests.” Yakubu said.

    The competition, in its 6th  edition, ends tomorrow  at the LLTC, Onikan.

    Azimuth Junior tennis tourney begins   at LLTC

    The 6th  edition of the Azimuth Shipping Lines Junior Tennis Championships starts today at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, Lagos.

    A total of 230 junior players are expected to take part in the competition expected to be highly interesting in all the categories.

    The youthful smashers are will compete in the Boys and Girls U-12,U-14 and U-16 categories with proceeding expected to be between 8am and 4.30pm.

    The Managing Director of Azimuth Shipping Lines, sponsors of the meet, Stephen Owolabi Martins, said his company’s target was a ‘catch them young’ initiative expected to yield fruits for Nigeria in the years to come.

     “Sports development is very important and that is why we enjoy seeing the young ones play. We are optimistic of a good event in the days ahead,” Martins said.

    Tournament Director, Jumoke Yakubu, stated that registration has been very encouraging.

     “We are going to have a draw of 32 or 64 depending on the total number of entries we have in each of the categories. The sponsors have put everything in place for the kids to have huge fun during the competition. We are hopefully going to have a great tournament and we will keep discovering and monitoring our new talents,” Yakubu said.

    In the last edition of the tournament, Amasiani Chukwudubem emerged champions in the Boys 12 and Under category just as Holzendorff Lorelay won the U-14 Girls cadre.

    The week long tournament ends on January 20th .
