Azuri music will build structures for upcoming artistes, says founder Asunni

Akorede Asunni, a prominent music executive, has reiterated the commitment of his record label to establish robust frameworks aimed at nurturing the next wave of talented artists.

Asunni said: “I just basically believe in young guys and the underdogs.

“People who you conventionally would not give a chance. Obviously, like every Nigerian, I’m a sucker for a grass to grace story. ‘Nobody expected this person to do this thing or this thing to happen like this, but then, it just happened.’ I think that basically was the crux of my decision.”

Asunni’s commitment is evident in his work as the label produced a super hit with its artiste, Babyboy AV’s whose song “Big Thug Boys” became an instant hit in 2021.

He said: “I think shortly after I started Azuri, we had a big break with AV, “Big Thug Boys. We literally have just been going from there and we worked with a plethora of artists. We’ve done pretty decently, right? Compared to where we started from and how competitive the space that we’re in is.”

These days, Azuri Music is one of the most instantly recognisable music distribution firms in Nigeria and continues to achieve more success.

It was behind the freewheeling success of 2023 breakout star, Spyro, and has helped propel records for other stars like Spy Shitta, Wizard Chan, Nana Fofie, Jaywillz, Yhaw Hero, Victor AD, Timi Dakolo amongst others.

Asunni is resolute about his dream of using Azuri Music as a vehicle to help rising artists attain sustainability.

He added: “I think that the future is us as a country, a people to make sure that we build enough structures to help the younger generation,” he added.

“Obviously, even if you are not the biggest artiste in the world, you know that by the time you start your journey, you’ll be able to see some money to keep you going. I’m not saying you have to be the biggest superstar, but you can just be on the come-up and try to start this journey and avenues for monetisation should be available to you.”
