    Babachir Lawal oversimplifies bitter politics

If Babachir David Lawal, a former secretary to the government of the federation, had ridden quietly into the sunset after his removal from office in 2017, he would have been long forgotten. He may lack the depth many Nigerians thought he was capable of, particularly having once assumed a high-profile public office, but he is devious enough to recognise that he needs to sustain his bitter remonstrations to maintain political relevance. He has kept up the flurry, excited that impressionable newsmen have found his postulations irresistible and worthy of adorning newspaper front pages. But if you are going to be very loud, why not add some glamour and substance to it? Not Mr Lawal. He inflicts himself on the public, and does so with bitter and provocative efficiency. Last Monday on television, he was in the public face again excoriating President Bola Tinubu whom he described as arrogant and pompous, and also pontificating on the 2023 presidential election, and stereotyping and psychoanalysing the Yoruba. Casting himself as the ultimate demolition man, he constantly feels a burden to ladle out bucketfuls of invectives now and then to every passerby, especially the ones who would fetch him newspaper headlines.

Mr Lawal has sadly not lived down his removal in 2017 as SGF over allegations of misappropriation of funds voted to alleviate food scarcity in the Northeast. First suspended by President Muhammadu Buhari in April of that year, he was eventually removed seven months later, because his stay in the administration had become a liability. He still smarts from that job loss and public disgrace. In any case, he severely left the late president out of his misery and has instead trained his guns almost exclusively on President Tinubu. Some Nigerians resent the president, particularly his political contemporaries frequently outsmarted by him, but few among them ever decribe him as arrogant. It is okay to dislike the president, indeed for no reason at all, but if a reason would be cited, it should at least contain some logic. But hear Mr Lawal on President Tinubu: “He is arrogant. The guy has an arrogance that belies definitions…The problem with Bola Tinubu is that he thinks I’m the one that offended him. I didn’t offend him; he offended me and he is full of himself, and he thinks that he is now so-called president…I believe he didn’t win the election.”

Similar to how some parts of Nigeria demonstrate dreadful unease when it comes to the Yoruba, the former SGF also swallowed the common stereotype of the Yoruba as arrogant and imperious. According to Mr Lawal, “The problem with the Yoruba – and I still repeat it – is that when you support them and they win, they turn around to convert you, behave as if they have subdued you, as if they have conquered you. They will not count your support…When I used to say that all the time, even when we sat in his house, they would say, ‘No, it’s not like that’…We that are not Yoruba—we regret it, because when you go there, they throw us out.” It is pointless trying to debunk Mr Lawal’s assertions. That view of the Yoruba is widely held in the Southeast, mused over in the South-South, and during the decolonisation process in the 1950s, northern political leaders felt the sting of Yoruba imperiousness. But the mistake the critics make is to ignore the fact that the Yoruba are no fan of one another either. Their elite ridiculed and conspired against Obafemi Awolowo before independence and in the First Republic, treated MKO Abiola with contempt until he won the 1993 election, and as ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo among many others have shown, the Yoruba have been the chief antagonists of their own causes more than anyone else. By making President Tinubu the archetypal Yoruba, the SGF clearly shows how little of the Southwest he knows.

Perhaps the worst fallacy Mr Lawal committed was his insistence that Mr Obi won the 2023 presidential poll. He did not present any proof other than to say he had proof. Yet he was in the Labour

Party during the poll, but did not think it fit to lend his proofs to Mr Obi to prosecute their outlandish case in the courts. In addition, he lied about contributing to President Tinubu’s election when he was all along fanatically promoting Mr Obi. The newspapers and social media will obviously continue to indulge Mr Lawal for some time to come. Indeed, the country will give a hearing to anyone with a modicum of talent for abuse and who can pillory the president. Mr Lawal will receive premium mention for his continuing and irrational characterisation of the president, for his pedantic consideration of social, political and economic issues, and for his rage against, and unsparing hatred for, the Yoruba, a trait shared by some geopolitical zones and persons. Do the Yoruba even know how deeply resented they are?

Babachir Lawal: from hysteria to boastfulness

In the run-up to the 2023 presidential election, former secretary to the government of the federation Babachir David Lawal was livid when he was overlooked for the running mate ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) standard-bearer Bola Tinubu. The party decided that a Muslim-Muslim ticket was more likely to fetch it the presidency than the politically correct option of balancing the ticket along faith lines. Mr Lawal, who together with former House of Representatives speaker Yakubu Dogara had briefly formed an alliance to undermine the APC, their party, described the same-faith ticket as a satanic option that would destroy the ruling party. Not done, he also described running mate Kashim Shettima, a former Borno State governor, as an excessively ambitious politician with unflattering image, a Greek gift from the northern governors.

The maligned APC candidate went on to win the presidency, and Mr Lawal’s hysteria and dire prognostication proved misplaced. If the election had been a two-horse race between President Tinubu and former vice president Atiku Abubakar, the APC candidate would have had some difficulties. But nature intervened and made the poll a three-horse race, thereby rendering Mr Lawal’s choice and self-proclaimed Christian champion, Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), a spoiler. His former ally in rebellion, Mr Dogara, saw through the fog and reluctantly backed Alhaji Atiku, the PDP candidate.

But Mr Lawal has not learnt any lesson from his woebegone political tactics of opting for and operating from extreme positions. He is once again shouting himself hoarse over the 2027 presidential election, bellowing that the coalition he is masterminding with the Atiku and Nasir el-Rufai crowds would win the next poll even if all the 36 governors defected to the APC. Obviously exasperated with the defections rewriting Nigerian politics and redrawing the country’s political map, he alludes to some mysterious and inscrutable inner workings of the coalition to bolster his predictions. But history and experience should instruct him to weigh his options far gentler and more rationally than he did in the last poll. Alas, it is not in his nature to pontificate with caution. He would rather let the chips fall where they may, and risk being left once again to hold the short end of the stick. Mr Lawal writes beautifully and, despite his frenzied summations, speaks eloquently; surely, he must know what it means to be hoisted with his own petard.

  • Buhari: provide corruption evidence against any official in my govt

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday night charged Nigerians that have evidence against any corrupt persons in his government to make it available to his administration.

He gave the charge while answering questions during a live programme tagged ‘The Candidates’ debate for the 2019 general elections.

Buhari was reacting to the allegations that his government’s anti corruption war was selective and against the opposition, while shielding members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The President was asked why the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir David Lawal, and other persons in his government have not been persecuted inspite of the fight against corruption.

Buhari said that the onus was on the person making allegations to provide evidence why the accused should be prosecuted.

He said, “That is not fair criticism of the government. I don’t think there is anybody that is being pointed out as corrupt in the last dispensation which we looked the other direction.

“I told you why I have to be careful and the public should help us, if there are strong allegations that is backed up with evidences, bank accounts, names of companies floated, contracts awarded, then we take them before the courts through EFCC and ICPC and we have to trust the system and allow them to complete investigation.

“If we just take people in as we did during the military and lock them up, the present democracy a multi party democracy does not approve that.

“If you accuse any person, you have to provide evidence in court for him to be prosecuted, So, if there is strong allegations, the government may decide to ask people to go like the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation we asked him to go.

“The matter is already before the EFCC and I believe that a directive has been issued to charge him and all persons who have cases before the EFCC.” he stated

  • Ex-SGF LAWAL: I’m proud to have been part of Presidential cabal

    …says Atiku can’t win election

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal has spoken for the first time after his sack from office, saying he did not defend himself about the allegations that led to his exit because he believe they were fabricated by those who wanted him out of office.

The former SGF said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar cannot win election even in his native Adamawa, stressing that he has become a nomadic politician moving from one party to the other.

Lawal told newsmen in Abuja that he was proud to have been associated with the cabal within the Presidency saying if having his suggestions to the President accepted makes him part of a cabal, he was proud to be one.

Feeling rather betrayed, Lawal said his exit from office opened his eyes to know that some of the people around him, especially while in office were envious of him.

He said he was not contesting the governorship of Adamawa because having served as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, running the federal government, he believes that he was bigger than the office of the governor, but would rather encourage his 33 year old son to do that.

He said: “Let me tell you, nothing happened to me. It was just a fabrication and I know it. That is why it didn’t bother me right from the beginning. That is why people don’t like me because I am self-confident.

“It didn’t bother me. Did I defend myself that time and I am not doing it because I know they were fabricated because they wanted the SGF position. I am still doing fine. If you want to make heaven as a Christian, never carry any grudge. Forgiveness is principle number one and I want to make heaven.”

Speaking on life outside government, Lawal said “before I came into government, I was a very successful businessman, a world renowned IT consultant. I abandoned that and came into government and was earning N930, 000 every month. Now, I have been sacked.

“Before then, I had a farm, 1000 hectares of farm land which I could not pay attention to because I was doing government job. Now, I have gone back to my farm and deactivated it completely and I now have 4000 hectare under cultivation.

“Last year, I earned close to half a billion Naira from my farm. I have a cattle ranch that I am developing gradually and I am back to IT consultancy. I will say life is good. Was I like this before? Everybody that sees me now tells me, you are looking good.

“I did expect Nigerians to stand behind me. You know that I am a Pastor; people always forget that I am a pastor. The Bible says that God works in all things for the good of those who trust him. There is something that has happened to me which, if I had not gone through this experience, I would not have known.

“There are people that I have helped that are determined to say that I should not see the light of day. All along, they were carrying my children to school, but scheming that I die. I would not have known that.

“I would not have known that people I was paying school fees for their children and feeding them were actually people who were envious of me. I would not have known that. I wouldn’t have known. That as a human being, you have no co two, over your destiny. God does it and I believe that the way the Bible puts it, everything that happen to you is for your own good.”

On being a member of the cabal operating within the Presidency, he said “cabal is not a bad word. Those they call cabal are the inner caucus and every person has people around him that are closest to him. If the President appoints me as SGF and I cannot influence his decision, then what am I doing there?

“That is the whole essence, being able to influence your boss decision. If because you are close to your boss and makes recommendations and he listens to you, that makes you a cabal, then it is a pride to be a cabal. Would you like me to be SGF and have no influence whatsoever in the government? Then, I will just be a bench warmer.”

While denying being the one who nominated the current Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Lawal said “Am I the President? Even when I was the SGF, all appointments were made by the President. At best, you recommend and it is up to him to either accept or reject. On what basis will I recommend the SGF? He is my brother and I cannot deny that.”

He deny any sectional interest in his work as SGF, saying “Am a Hausa man? I am a Kilba man and we are only about 30,000. I am a Christian and there is no way I can be accused of sectionalism if a Muslim gets appointed or get recommended by me or if I recommend somebody from Sokoto or Katsina.

“You can call me sectional, if you can tell me that from your Hong local government; these are the appointments you made. If they are talking about sectionalism, were they when these people were working hard. When I was appointed SGF. they didn’t even know where I come from. Where were they when we were sleeping in the bushes.”

On the chances of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, the former SGF said “I like the man ooo. You know I resembled him. I like the guy, but he can’t win election in Adamawa State. There are just people who can’t win election because their methodology is not good.

“Somehow, people are fatigue and the man changed party like football. You kick a football, run after it and kick it again. So, the man changes parties. Anytime you change party, you leave somebody behind.”

Lawal said President Buhari remains the best option for the presidency, saying “I know that President Buhari has done well to be re-elected over and over again. Have you not seen the infrastructures and the things Buhari has been doing? Come to Adamawa State and I will show you.

“In my own state, before Buhari came, seven local government areas were under occupation by Boko Haram. I couldn’t go to my village, I couldn’t go to my farm, I couldn’t go to my local government. Now, even at 2 am, I drove to my house and sleep well, in the morning, I wake up and go to my farm in a remote part of the village and come back safe.

“If you have never been insecure, you don’t know what it mean to be safe or feel safe and sleep in your house without fear. Secondly, all the truncated A roads in Adamawa State are either under construction or the contract are being awarded.

“The road from Yola to Gombe is under construction, from Numan to Taraba is under construction, from Yola to Mubi is under construction and many others. The 330KVA line to Jalingo is completed.

“Before now, Adamawa was on 33 KVA and simple grinding machine could not operate in Adamawa State. Now, we have 330KVA going to Jalingo and there is another one under construction. Boko Haram burnt down all the schools and police stations in the occupied areas. Right now, all of them have been rebuilt and the policemen have come back what else do we want?”

  • No more war with Executive, says Senate

No more war with Executive, says Senate

Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, Wednesday declared that the era of Executive, Legislature face off is over.

Saraki who made the declaration when he ruled on the a motion alleging irregularity in the renewal of the tenure of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) board further insisted that “the days of balderdash was over”

Following the intervention of Saraki and Senate leader, Senator Ahmed Lawan, the Senate resolved to mandate its committee on NDDC to take up the matter with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, to articulate amicable resolution of the board tenure extension.

Senator Emmanuel Paulker (Bayelsa Central)  had in his motion entitled “The illegal extension of the tenure of the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC)”  observed that the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) was established to tackle developmental issues affecting the Niger Delta.

He further noted that noted that it was in response to the age-long agitation of the people of the Niger Delta that had snowballed into militancy which disrupted oil production and affected our national economic interest that the Commission was established.

The Beyelsa central lawmaker said that the Commission consists of a Board made up of members drawn from the States of Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross-River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo and Rivers.

He observed that Section 4 of the act states that the office of the Chairman shall rotate amongst member States of the Commission in alphabetical order.

He noted that the Chairmanship of the NDDC started with Abia State and has rotated in accordance with the Act up to Cross-River state now.

Paulker observed that the NDDC Act also states that “where a vacancy occurs in the membership board it shall be filled by the appointment of a successor to hold office for the remainder of the term of his predecessor, so however, that the successor shall represent the same interest and shall be appointed by the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces subject to the confirmation of the Senate in consultation with the House of Representatives.”

He noted that that the Board headed by Senator Victor Ndoma Egba, SAN was appointed by the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to replace the one headed by Senator Bassey Henshaw.

He observed further that Section 5 (2) of the Act dictates that the Board headed by Senator Victor Ndoma Egba, SAN serves out the remainder of the term of the board chaired by Senator Bassey Henshaw will terminate in December 2017.

He noted that contrary to the clear provisions of Section 5 (2) of the N DPC Act, the tenure of the present board of the Commission has been illegally extended to 4 years by the immediate past Acting secretary to Government of the Federation, Dr. Habiba Muda Lawal.

He added that contravention of the NDDC Act portends grave danger to the relative peace we enjoy in the Niger Delta and prayed the Senate accordingly resolve to mandate the Committee on Niger Delta to investigate the illegal renewal of the tenure of the present Board of the Commission.

Hardly had Paulker concluded his submission than the Senate Leader, Lawan called for caution.

The Yobe North lawmaker said that he engaged the SGF to find out what happened.

Lawan said that since the new SGF had shown sufficient inclination to work with the National Assembly, he should be given the benefit of the doubt to resolve the issue.

Saraki on his part said that the matter should be referred to the NDDC Committee to take up the matter with the SGF for resolution.

The Senate President who said that “the days of balderdash are over” noted that “in the spirit of new relations between the Executiive and the Legislature; the matter should be taken up with the SGF.

Former SGF, Babachir David Lawal had described the Senate as “talking balderdash” for indicting over grass cutting contract in the North East.

Findings showed that the resolution to take up the issue with the SGF following the intervention of the Saraki was informed by the need to promote the new found rapport between the Executive and the Legislature.

A source close to the Senate President recalled that the recent appointment of a new SGF occasioned the visit of the new SGF to the leadership of the National Assembly to improve and strengthen Executive-Legislature relationship.

The Senate leadership, he said, “may also have been moved to support the reform minded initiative of the present NDDC leadership. “

He noted that the matured handling of the motion by the Senate leadership had gone further to “underscore and demonstrate the determination of the Senate to support the core mandate of the NDDC as an interventionist agency.”

According to him, “on this the NDDC leadership on its part is required to focus in its present commitment to develop the region and make the agency responsible.”

A document made available to reporters marked “Re: Clarification on the tenure of the governing Board of the of NDDC” indicated various conditions a vacancy can occur in the NDDC governing board.

The document specifically said that “the previous Board of the NDDC was dissolved and its tenure extinguished.”

It added that “Dissolution of the Board cannot be categorized as a vacancy under the Act. Dissolution signifies total extinguishment of the Board, it simply ceases to exist, and therefore there cannot be any reminder of any term which a successor is expected to complete. There has to be a fresh composition of the Board for a fresh term of four years.”

  • PDP wants Buhari impeached

    PDP wants Buhari impeached

The leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the immediate impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari for “violating his oath of office”.

The party also called for proper investigation and prosecution of the sacked Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal and the ex-Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Mr. Ayodele Oke.

A statement Monday by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, accused Buhari of double standard in the anti-corruption war by shielding his aides and associates from prosecution while haunting opposition figure over alleged corruption.

Describing the mere sacking of Babachir and Oke as a slap on the faces of Nigerians, the PDP insisted that they be handed off to the existing anti-corruption agencies for investigation and prosecution the same way members of the opposition are being treated.

The PDP said, “It is an insult on the-collective intelligence of our people who have waited patiently for the President’s reaction on the humongous act of corruption by two of his principal aides and this is totally unacceptable.

“First and foremost, we had disagreed with the President last year when he decided to setup the panel headed by the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo to investigate the matter because we thought that was the wrong course of action to take.

“Ordinarily, cases of corruption or alleged cases of misappropriation of funds are supposed to be referred to institutions that are saddled with the responsibility to investigate and prosecute such matters, which is the ICPC and the EFCC if there is any prima facie case against them.

“But it appears not all animals are equal under the Buhari APC administration. Some people are treated with kid gloves while others, particularly those in opposition are subjected to all manner of harrowing experiences.

“One of the senators of the APC, Senator Shehu Sani of Kaduna State, succinctly put the matter when he said that this administration uses deodorant to fight corruption when it comes to some APC members and President Buhari’s kitchen cabinet, but uses insecticides when it involves members of the opposition and those in the National Assembly”.

The opposition party wondered why it took the President almost one year to attend to the two cases while the culprits were having a field day at home and enjoying themselves.

“Whereas, in the case of the opposition, especially PDP members, even when the evidence is flimsy, they will be visited with multiple harassment and intimidation for months and weeks without proper trial.

“We cite the case of Sambo Dasuki who has been in detention for over two years even when many courts in Nigeria and the ECOWAS Court have ordered his release, the President has fragrantly disobeyed these court orders which again are a violation of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“This is an impeachable offence. So the President cannot just sack Ayo Oke and Babachir Lawal and expects us to be clapping for him.

“We believe that we are operating under a democracy and a Constitution that governs our affairs. To have subjected these people to different sets of rule and treatment is totally unacceptable.

“Nigerians are the same under the law and Babachir Lawal and Ayo Oke should not be tried by the Presidency while others are hounded by the EFCC and ICPC.

“These actions of Mr. President are therefore a breach of his oath of office, which he swore to defend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and to be fair and just to all Nigerians without any discrimination whatsoever.

“The action of the President is a gross violation of his constitutional oath and therefore constitutes a veritable ground for impeachment Using and applying different laws to different people in the country is a direct assault on the constitution and the rule of law .

“Consequently, we call on the National Assembly to begin processes to impeach the President for breach of the Constitution and fragrance disobedience to the laws of Nigeria.

“We totally reject these actions and the law should follow its full course on the issues of these officers. In other words, their case should be referred to the EFCC for proper investigation and trial, more so when the President has not told us what the report of the findings was”, the statement added.

The party argued that Nigerians have the right to know the findings of the Osinbajo panel that investigated Babachir and Oke and insisted that the report should be made public since it is the people’s money that is involved.

“The President has by his actions taken Nigeria to the level of a banana republic. We are not in a banana republic. This is the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Three successive governments of the PDP did not act in the manner President Buhari is acting.

“There is no doubt that the sudden sack of the SGF and the DG of NIA is just a consequence of the backlash on the Abdulrasheed Maina saga.

“Up till now, there’s no answer to the pertinent questions we have asked on the Maina saga. The government cares less about the feelings and opinions of Nigerians. This kind of arrogance is unprecedented in the history of this county.

“We again call for the arrest and investigation of the two Ministers involved in the return of Maina into the civil service, that is, the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau and Abubakar Mallami, the Attorney General of the Federation & Minister of Justice”, the party concluded.

  • Release Osinbajo’s report on SGF now – ADP tells Buhari

Release Osinbajo’s report on SGF now – ADP tells Buhari

The Action Democratic Party (ADP) has accused President Muhammadu Buhari was paying lip service to the fight against corruption in spite of his avowed decision to fight the monster head on and demand the immediate release of the Osibanjo report on the investigation of the suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal.

National Chairman of the party, Engr. Yabagi Sani who spoke at the National Executive Council meeting of the party in Abuja said the long silence of the President on the level of corruption going on his government was not helping his anti-corruption crusade.

He said the government must heed the warning of the World Bank in the proposed plan to borrow about $5.5 billion to finance infrastructural development across the country.

He said: “It is unfortunate that this government is paying lip service to corruption. This is in spite of its vow to fight corruption head-on. The $25 billion contract award scandal in the NNPC and other unresolved cases of corruption involving the functionaries of the APC-led federal government bring to question the commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari to the fight against corruption.

“The President should come out clean on the NNPC contract award scandal since he is the supervising Minister of Petroleum. The federal government should heed the caution he the World Bank in view of the among of high debt profile of the country.”

While condemning the delay in the releasing the report on the corruption allegation against the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sani said “President Buhari should immediately release the report of the Osinbajo led investigation panel on the N40 billion cash fund in Lagos and the indictment of the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Engr. Babachir David Lawal.”

He said it was unfortunate that the country was presently on the precipice, pointing out that “as a patriot, we must exhibit the determination to rescue our country and place her on the path of progress and national cohesion. History and posterity will vindicate us as we March on this journey of national rebirth.”

Sani informed the meeting that the party manifesto clearly indicates the intention of the party to embark on economic development plans which would encompass restructuring, fiscal federalism and devolution of power to fast-track effort towards poverty alleviation at the grassroots, especially polling units.

He direct d all state chairmen to put in place mechanism to form cooperative societies to take advantage of the microfinance facilities being worked out by the party, adding that the party remain the fastest growing party in the country today.

He asked the youth to rise up to the occasion, change the narratives, push for new frontiers and challenge the leadership and status quo in the country by joining the party which he described as the credible alternative to the ruling party.

He said out of the six new parties registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the ADP remain the only party that has opened offices in all the states of the federation and the 774 local government areas of the country.

  • Buhari’s failure to implement report on SGF dangerous for APC – Shehu Sani

Buhari’s failure to implement report on SGF dangerous for APC – Shehu Sani

The Senator representing Kaduna Central in the upper legislative chamber, Shehu Sani, on Monday warned that failure of President Muhammadu Buhari to implement Vice President Yemi Osinbajo- led committee’s report on alleged corruption in Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in the North East posed a serious threat to survival of All Progressives Congress (APC) beyond 2019.

Sani, who the Chairman of Senate Committee on humanitarian crisis in the North East, also warned that any further delay to make the report centred on the suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, available to Nigerians would tarnish the long built integrity, reputation and credibility of President Buhari himself.

Fielding questions from journalists shortly after he handed over documents of a newly purchased skill acquisition centre to leadership of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) at Sabon-Tasha, Kaduna, the senator said the fight against corruption should not limited to people in the opposition parties alone but also people within the APC to show Nigerians that the party meant well for the people.

He said: “I am as worried as any meaningful Nigerian. I personally investigated the handling of the funds in the North East part of the country. Presidency also set up a committee headed by Vice President Osinbajo who has also completed its investigation and submitted its report. But it’s been months now that Mr. President came back to the country and nothing has been heard of it.

“That is why I said, I hope the report has not been eaten by rodents and soft copy infected by virus. But if there is nothing of such, I believe Mr. President must seriously take action against this. And if he doesn’t, then the proverbial insecticide and deodorant will simply be applied.

“If we are serious about fighting corruption, it should be total not only people that are far from us or people who are not in our party. Our President should know that his credibility and integrity are hanging until this issue is addressed and he has to address it very well.

“There should be no hidden place, there should be no immunity as much as we have the will, the capacity to put the people from opposition parties to jail, we should also do that to people who come from APC if they are guilty. That will show we are serious about what we are doing except if we have double face anti-corruption crusade which is not good for this country.

“The whole Nigeria is waiting for him to act. He should not allow his love, his passion and soft-heartedness for people whom he hold closely deny him his good name. He should move because is either their names or his and I believe he should safe his name first.

“So, I’m appealing to Mr. President to expedite action on the report before him on how people misused and abused their position in office and enrich themselves. This report must be made public and President must take action on it not tomorrow but today.”

Buhari has final say on SGF, NIA Boss probe, says Osinbajo

…Says government will be fair to all

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday said that President Muhammadu Buhari has the final say on the report of the Presidential investigative panel that probed of the suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal and the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ayo Oke.

Speaking with State House correspondents after submitting the report to Buhari, Osinbajo, said that it was now left for the President to study it before arriving at a decision.

He declined to comment on the recommendations of the report.

Asked what the report contained, he said “Of course not. I mean this is a report which contains recommendations to the President.

It is a fact finding committee as you know and what our terms of reference were was to find out based on the fact available to us and based on the interviews of witnesses of what transpired in those cases of the report one involving the SGF and the other the DG of NIA.

“We have now concluded that and we submitted a full report with recommendations to the President. We cannot of course give you any kind of details because the President has to look at the report, study it and then make his own decisions based on that report.”

On whether the government is going to look at the SGF report from the angle of justice or as close friend, he said “Well as you can imagine we are always fair minded and the whole approach is to ensure that justice is done in all cases.

“It is in the interest of the government and also the interest of the nation that things are done properly and that there is due process and that we are not unfair. You can be sure that we will do the right thing.

Asked how soon the President will decide on the report, Osinbajo said “All I can now say is that we have submitted the report to the President and it is a very detailed report as a matter of fact.

The President has to study the report and make decisions.

Pressed further to give insight into the report, he said “Of course I cannot, how can I? This is a document which has just been submitted to the President. He is the one who will read the recommendations and the facts and then make a decision.

On whether heads will roll, he said “No, how can I tell you? If you want to know what is in the report you have to wait, you really have to wait.”

SGF, NIA DG remain suspended, says Presidency

The Presidency on Sunday insisted that the suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal and the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ayo Oke are still suspended.
The Presidential Investigative Panel, headed by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, had investigated Lawal over allegations of violations of law and due process in the award of contracts under the Presidential Initiative on the North East (PINE).
The panel also probed money linked to Oke concerning the discovery of large amounts of foreign and local currencies by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in a residential apartment at Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos.
The two weeks period given by President Muhammadu Buhari for the probe had already expired.
A statement by the Senior Special Assistant on media and publicity, Laolu Akande, said that the outcome of the Investigation will soon be made public.
Urging for patience, he said that Nigerians would be satisfied with the outcome of the investigation when made public.
He also disclosed that the Acting President is billed to hold an interactive session with a cross-section of middle level and senior public and civil servants on Wednesday.
The interactive session, he said, is part of measures to drive the reforms intended in the new executive orders signed last Thursday.
He said that the Acting President would be discussing in particular the executive orders on business environment and promoting “Made in Nigeria” products.
He said that the Buhari administration will drive the new executive orders vigorously in its determination to significantly transform the business environment and how government business is done in the country.
“These are the people who will be directly responsible for the attainment of the objectives of the executive orders, so the Ag. President wants an opportunity to talk with them directly and also hear from them in person.” he said
Stressing that the interactive forum would be opened for live coverage by a number of TV stations, and live streaming, Akande said that ensuring the effective implementation of the orders are critical for the overall prosperity of Nigerians and Nigeria.
Besides, as part of activities commemorating the Second year of the Buhari administration, Akande said next week on May 29, a presidential level Report Card event on the Social Investment Programmes of the Buhari presidency would be held at Aso Rock.
“Here at this national event, we shall be updating Nigerians on the progress so far attained, how we are addressing some challenges and how President Buhari’s Social Investment Programmes would be significantly expanded going forward,” Akande noted.
