  • Court remands ex-convict over alleged theft

    A Kubwa Grade1 Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday ordered the remand of 20-year-old ex- convict, Rabiu Abdullahi in prison for alleged theft.

    The judge, Ibrahim Balarabe, remanded the defendant and adjourned the matter until March 18 for ruling on his bail application.

    The defendant of Byanzhin, Kubwa, Abuja, was arraigned on a count charge of theft.

    Prosecutor Babajide Olanipekun, had told the court that one Nicholas Onyemehe, reported the matter at the Kubwa Police Station on Feb.16.

    He alleged that the defendant stole the complainant’s clothes valued at N5, 000, but was arrested as he attempted to escape from the scene.

    The prosecutor told the court that the defendant was an ex-convict, convicted and sentenced for a similar offence in the past.

    He said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code.

    The defendant denied committing the alleged offence.

  • Businessman docked over theft

    The Police on Friday in Abuja, arraigned a 30-year-old businessman, Mr Praise Alex, at a Kubwa Grade1 Area Court over alleged theft.

    The defendant of Kagini, Abuja, is facing a one-count charge of theft.

    The Prosecutor, Mr Babajide Olanipekun, told the court that one Obuilu Chukwuemeka reported the matter at the Kubwa Police Station on Nov.13.

    He said that the defendant fraudulently transferred N55, 000 from the complainant’s Guaranty Trust Bank account to one Graysbah Resource Nig. Ltd without his consent.

    Olanipekun said that the defendant converted the money to his personal use, adding that the offence contravened section 287 of the Penal Code.

    However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Judge, Abdulwahab Mohammed, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000, with “one reliable surety residing within the court’s jurisdiction’’.

    However, the judge adjourned the matter until Jan. 23.

  • Man gets strokes of cane for stealing packs of Coca-cola

    A Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court in the Federal Capital Teritory on Tuesday sentenced a 33-year-old man to 20 strokes of cane for stealing three packs of Coca-cola soft drinks, valued N4,400.

    The judge, Abdulwahab Mohammed, also counseled the convict, Mohammed Sani, to desist from committing crime and be of good behaviour.

    Sani was convicted for criminal trespass and theft.

    The Prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun, had told the court that Sani stole three packs of Coca-cola drink from the complainant’s shop located at Byanzhin, Kubwa, Abuja, on November 2.

    He said Sani was chased and arrested with the drinks, adding that the offence contravened Sections 342 and 287 of the Penal Code.

    Sani pleaded guilty to the charges and begged the court for mercy, saying that he stole because he was hungry.

    Defence counsel, Moses Ugwummadu, prayed for the court to temper justice with mercy, adding that Sani would not do it again.

  • Man, 28, in court over alleged car theft

    The Police on Thursday arraigned a 28-year-old man, Chinedu Victor in a Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court over alleged car theft.

    The defendant of Zuba, Abuja was docked over a charge of theft.

    The prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun told the court that one Orshio Teraemen reported the matter at the Kubwa Police Station on Sept. 14.

    He said the defendant acted in a dubious manner and used a master key to open the complainant’s Toyota Corolla car valued N650, 000 on the said date.

    He further said while the defendant attempted to move the said car, he was chased and arrested adding that the offence contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    The defence counsel, Moses Ugwummadu made a bail application for his client pursuant to Sections 35 and 36 of the 1999 Constitution urging the court to grant bail in the most liberal terms.‎

    The prosecutor however opposed the bail request saying that the defendant had the likelihood of committing the same crime because he allegedly has a master key.‎

    The judge, Abdulwahab Mohammed granted the defendant N500, 000 bail with two reliable sureties of which one must be well known in the community.

    He adjourned the matter until Oct. 22, for hearing.

  • Painter bags four weeks imprisonment for stealing

    A Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court on Tuesday sentenced a 30-year-old painter, Abdulmajib Busari, to four weeks imprisonment for stealing a TV and laptop valued N220, 00‎0.

    The Judge, Abdulwahab Mohammed, also ordered that Busari be given 10 strokes of the cane.

    He advised the convict to desist from committing crime and should be of good behaviour.

    Busari was tried for theft.

    The Prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun, told the court that one Oluleye Ogunlowo reported the matter at the Kubwa Area Command, Abuja, on May 27.

    He said Busari broke into the complainant’s room and stole one Samsung flat screen television and one Hp laptop all valued at N220, 00‎0.

    Olanipekun said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code.

    Busari had pleaded guilty and begged the court to have mercy on him, saying he would not steal again.

  • Man docked for setting neighbor’s home ablaze

    A 37-year-old man, Oshajare Ohutimi, was on Thursday docked before a Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly setting his neighbor’s home alight.

    Ohutimi, who resides in Kubwa, Abuja, is being tried for mischief.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun, told the court that one Peter Ezemba reported the matter at the Kubwa Police Station on June 17.

    Olanipekun said that the accused committed the offence when the complainant was not at home.

    He said that the accused set the home on fire through the ceiling.

    Olanipekun said the defendant did so, with the intent to cause damage to the complainant’s property, adding that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 336 of the Penal Code.

    The prosecutor told the court that the accused lives in the same premises with the complainant and could commit the same offence if granted bail.

    He pleaded that if the court must grant the accused bail, it should be on stringent conditions.

    The defence counsel, Moses Ugwummadu, urged the court to disregard the prosecution’s claim because his client would provide a reliable surety if bail was granted.

    The judge, Abdulwahab Mohammed, granted the defendant N300, 000 bail with a reliable surety in like sum.

    He said that the surety must be well known where he resides.

    He also ordered that the accused should write an undertaking to maintain peace pending the determination of the case.

    Mohammed adjourned the matter until Aug. 20 for hearing.

     

  • Motorcyclist bags 6 months imprisonment for inflicting injuries on Man

    A Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Monday sentenced a 25-year-old motorcyclist, Nura Mohammed, to six months  imprisonment for inflicting injuries on a man’s throat with a knife.

    Mohammed, who admitted committing the offence, begged the court for leniency.

    The judge, Mohammed Marafa, however, convicted the accused, but gave him N 20,000 option of fine.

    Marafa also ordered Mohammed to pay N50, 000 compensation to the nominal complainant, one Samail Bello, failure of which, he will serve additional three months in prison.

    The judge warned him to desist from committing crime.

    He said Mohammed’s act portrayed him as a heartless person.

    The convict was arraigned on a count charge of causing grievous hurt.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun, had told the court that Bello of Gbazango, Kubwa, Abuja reported the matter at the Kubwa Police Station on May 21.

    Olanipekun said on May 20, the convict acted in a violent manner and used a sharp knife to “slice Bello’s throat’’ which as a result he sustained a deep cut.

    He said that the victim was taken to Kubwa General Hospital where he was admitted.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 247 of the Penal Code.‎

  • Septuagenarian remanded in police custody over forgery ‎

    A Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday remanded a 70-year-old man, Okutepa Abdullahi in police custody, for allegedly using a forged document to draw pension from the Military Pension Board.

    Abdullahi is facing charges bordering on cheating and forgery to which he pleaded not guilty.

    The Judge, Mohammed Marafa, ordered the remand of the accused in police custody until May 23, the next adjourned date, for hearing.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun, had told the court that the defendant presented a forged document to draw pension from the military pension board.

    He said that the septuagenarian presented a forged discharge certificate as genuine to the pension board on May 17.‎

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Sections 366 and 322 of the Penal Code.

  • Man docked over alleged impersonation, abduction

    The Police on Tuesday arraigned a 22-year-old man, Bright Solomon, in a Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for alleged impersonation and abduction.

    The defendant was docked on charges bordering on criminal conspiracy, impersonation, abduction and being in possession of ATM cards suspected to be stolen, offences he denied committing.

    The prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun, told the court that the defendant and two others now at large, paraded themselves as clergymen and abducted one Onyinye Asawalam,‎ on May 5.

    He said that the defendant took Asawalam to Keystone Bank, Kubwa, without her parents’ consent.

    The prosecutor said that the defendant attempted to withdrew money with Asawalam’s ATM card, but was caught.

    He said that during police investigation, 14 different ATM cards were found in the possession of the defendant.

    The offences contravened Sections 97, 179, 272, 95 and 319 of the Penal Code.

    The judge, Mohammed Marafa, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500, 000, with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case until July 13 for hearing

  • Student docked over alleged theft of gas cylinder

    The police on Friday arraigned a 20-year-old student, Andrew Dominic, before a Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court over alleged theft of gas cylinder.

    The prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun, told the court that one Mr Azubike Chidebere ‎reported the case at the Kubwa Police Station on April 23.

    Olanipekun said that the accused  trespassed into the complainant’s compound and stole his gas cylinder worth N12, 000.

    He said that Dominic was caught while attempting to escape with the cylinder.

    The prosecutor submitted  that Dominic had been convicted for a similar offence in the past.

    He noted that the offences contravened Sections 342 and 287 of the Penal Code.

    The Judge, Mohammed Marafa, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    Marafa held that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

    He  adjourned the case until June 18 for hearing.
