  • I’ll not betray Lagosians, says Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor-elect Babajide Sanwo-Olu yesterday promised not to betray Lagosians when he assumes office on May 29.

He pledged to run an all-inclusive government and fulfil other campaign promises he made to the people.

The governor-elect spoke at the state office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), shortly after receiving his Certificate of Return from Resident Electoral Commissioner Sam Olumekun.

Describing himself as a winner of a free, fair and credible election, Sanwo-Olu said the electoral commission deserved applause for conducting a peaceful exercise.

He also extended a hand of fellowship to the 40 opposition candidates who competed with him, stressing that their input are required in tackling the myriad of challenges in education, health, transportation and the environment.

“A victory for one is a victory for all. It is a victory for all Lagosisns. No victor, no vanquished. We will all make life better for Lagosians,” he said.

Thanking the stakeholders, Sanwo-Olu commended INEC and other apparatus of government involved in the election, saying that the reward for hard work was more work.

He also thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for showing leadership example.

The governor-elect also applauded the National Chairman of APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole; Lagos APC GAC leaders, and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who he noted, was in birthday celebration mood.

He prayed that all the critical stakeholders would be present at his inauguration on May 29.

However, in an emotion-laden voice, Sanwo-Olu said the inauguration date would coincide with the post-humus birthday of his mother who had passed on a few years ago.

Reiterating his commitment to an all-inclusive administration, the governor-elect said his doors were already open to stakeholders, including the opposition, to make their contributions to governance.

He promised to re-enact the true greatness of Lagos which the stakeholders stand for.

Sanwo-Olu added: “We will not betray public confidence. Better times are coming. Lagosians deserve the best. We must get it right in Lagos. If we get it right in Lagos, we will get it right in Nigeria.

“We are ready. We are committed. We will do the job that Lagosians have given to us.”

Imam Gafar, who paired with a Christian priest to pray for Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat, urged them to work for public good.

The cleric, who also advised them to beware of sycophants who peddle falsehood, wished the governor-elect a successful tenure.

Also, he charged Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu and Mrs Oluremi Hamzat to be prepared for the challenges of adjustment to new life and cooperate with their husbands.

The REC reflected on the election, saying that it was adjudged credible, smooth, peaceful, free and fair by the international community.

Hailing Sanwo-Olu for his victory, Olumekun said: “Lagosians have spoken, Your Excellency, and I dare say that they spoke loudly and without equivocation. Therefore, the journey to a better Lagos is laid squarely in your court. May God Almighty be your lode-star in this journey.”

  • Lagos: Why I don’t envy Babajide Sanwo-Olu

Aside the presidency, being governor of Lagos State is one of the most powerful and prestigious political offices anyone can occupy in Nigeria – and for good reason too.

Lagos is the nation’s commercial capital and currently ranked the fifth largest economy in Africa –putting it ahead of over 40 countries on the continent. It equally outstrips the 35 other states in terms of revenue generation and overall economic performance.

Such is the depth of the state’s strength that in 2018 it generated 76% of its revenues internally. This amounted to about N34 billion monthly. Governor Akinwumi Ambode mid last year spoke of an aspiration to reduce the state’s dependence of federal revenues to less than 10%.

While these figures may seem impressive against the backdrop of 27 states being almost bankrupt, much of what it generates is also devoured by overheads, an ambitious infrastructure development programme and the challenges of catering for an ever surging population whose reveal numbers remain guesstimates.

State government statistics says 86 immigrants enter Lagos every minute of the day – the highest rate of any city in the world. That translates into 123,840 entrants on a daily basis and they come to stay.

This influx overwhelms whatever facilities are on the ground and outpaces the ability of the government to provide new ones. So while the city might look like one massive construction site, whatever is being built simply plays catch-up, but never catching-up.

This pattern will remain for as long as the rest of the country continues to struggle economically – leaving the city and to a lesser extent Abuja and Port Harcourt as the only centres of opportunity open to the desperate. This is the challenge that Governor-Elect, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, will inherit in a matter of weeks.

His rise was unscripted, as the incumbent Ambode was expected to have an easy ride to a second term courtesy of his ambitious vision for altering the face of the city. In the first two years, his aggressive opening up of the interior of the state as well as showpiece projects like the Abule-Egba and Ajah flyovers, the skywalk and bus terminals at Oshodi and elsewhere, marked him out as a man of action who was intent on outperforming his predecessor, Babatunde Fashola.

He was not only building big, he was equally providing solutions in certain areas of the city like Ojodu and Oworonsoki where traffic jams had become nightmarish. Unfortunately, it all went wrong suddenly.

Ultimately, his attempt to reform the process of clearing refuse in the city proved his undoing. In the Visionscape debacle his political skills were tested and he fell short. Just as the deal collapsed, the coalition that brought him to power gave way – and the rest is history.

Whatever may be Ambode’s legacy in terms of infrastructural development, he leaves for his successor a city that has regressed in so many ways.

Today, Lagos has become one of the dirtiest cities on the continent. This dubious distinction was something the Bola Tinubu and Fashola administrations had managed to bury.

The inability of the outgoing governor to crack the Visionscape logjam provides Sanwo-Olu with an opportunity for a quick win. The city stinks and is crying desperately for a clean-up. The world would sit up and notice if he can make the mounds of filth disappear.

To his credit, under Ambode violent crime remained relatively low. Ironically, it was also a period marked by unprecedented lawlessness on the roads and elsewhere. A drive on most Lagos roads is like engaging in mortal combat. You may escape with your life but your vehicle would be the worse for wear.

On any given day, from the tony environs of Ikoyi to the more prosaic parts of town, swarms of commercial motorcyclists (okada) and tricyclists unleash a reign of terror on the roads. Not satisfied with seizing the roads where the laws say they are officially barred, they now ride freely on pedestrian sidewalks! Driving against traffic, jumping the lights, is accepted practice. Frankly, on Lagos roads you can get away with murder – and not just in a figurative sense.

Compounding the sense of chaos is the collusion of security officials with delinquent commercial bus drivers and motorcyclists. It is really a lost battle when those who are supposed to enforce regulations are in bed with offenders.

Another maddening contradiction of the Ambode era is the fact that while embarking on these huge projects like the BRT lane from Abule-Egba to Oshodi, basic things like patching potholes on existing roads were left undone.

What used to be a tradition of constantly fixing failed portions of key arteries in the city has been abandoned. No area is exempt – not even the seat of government in Alausa.

The only reason these roads would be left in this condition is lack of funds. But a state that is able to finance multi-billion naira mega projects can spend a few billions fixing potholes if those governing care about the same things as the governed. The condition of roads – major and minor – is another crisis area Sanwo-Olu must address in a hurry.

Lagos is a city of contrasts where breath-taking opulence lives side-by-side with depressing poverty. The aforementioned swarms of commercial motorcyclists are not just a nuisance on the road: they are a constant reminder of the impoverished state of the larger population in the city.

That poverty is also on display in the form of street traders selling everything from fresh fruit to fire extinguishers taking over the rail tracks at Ikeja or the uncompleted BRT lane at Iyana-Ipaja as evening falls. The streets become a moving mall because the vendors – battling with daily survival – cannot afford regular stalls in proper markets.

This poverty is another reason why the okada problem has defied solution. Although they provide transport solutions for people who wish to move swiftly along the clogged roads, they are now one of the major employers of labour in the city. The numbers in operation are probably in the tens of thousands. To eliminate them would require the creations of tens of thousands of jobs otherwise many would take to a life of crime.

The ability of the government to create jobs for such a large number is limited. But the new administration can encourage the private sector to generate employment by ditching policies that are not pro-business or those that deter the would-be entrepreneur. In this context, multi-taxation by different levels of government in the state needs to be addressed.

It is no exaggeration to say that if Lagos works, Nigeria works. For the city to be better than it is now, the incoming governor and his team must outgrow the smug satisfaction of being better endowed than less-favoured states, and focus on transforming the city into a truly world class metropolis.

That begins with dealing with the problem of lawlessness and ensuring that basic rules are obeyed. Lagos cannot be a jungle where anything goes, if it truly aspires to be something special. The Eko o ni baje slogan must move beyond a fond wish and become active impulse that drives how people live.

That requires a measure of ruthlessness. The governor-elect looks like a nice guy – all smiles and charm. But in Lagos nice guys don’t win, unless their external veneer hides an iron will. Until Fashola, Oshodi was a transport hub notorious for crime, grime and gridlock. But with steely determination he tamed it. Does Sanwo-Olu possess that same streak? His actions would shortly speak for themselves.

  • Sanwo-Olu condemns cases of Lagos collapsed buildings

The Lagos State Governor-Elect, Babajide Sanwo-Olu yesterday described the recent collapsed building in the state as unfortunate.

But he praised the swift actions taken by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to address the problem.

The Governor-Elect spoke with State House correspondents after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari alongside the Deputy Governor-elect, Femi Hafsat.

He said: “It’s an unfortunate incident. Incidentally, when I was in government before, I used to be the Vice Chairman of the building collapse committee. It was something that happened about 8-10 years ago, which was what led to the creation of an agency which we called Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA)  at that time, which was meant to begin to identify structures way ahead before such incidences occur.

“But it’s an unfortunate thing, extremely very unfortunate and it is not something that we will like to see it happening again. So the current government has started very quickly, ensuring that they test the integrity of a whole lot of properties we have there.

  • Southwest APC congratulates Sanwo-Olu, Abiodun, others

The Southwest All Progressives Congress (APC) has congratulated Lagos State Governor-elect Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and his Ogun State counterpart, Dapo Abiodun, on their victory at the poll.

The party, congratulated Lagos State Deputy Governor-elect, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat; his Ogun State counterpart, Mrs. Noimot Salako-Oyedele; senators-elect and their counterparts in the House of Representatives in the region on their successful election.

The APC National Vice Chairman, Mr. Bankole Oluwajana, congratulated them in a statement in Ibadan yesterday, urging the newly elected officers on the platform of the APC to uphold the tenets and values of the progressives.

Although it lost governorship election in Oyo State, the APC won two states where governorship election held in the geo-political zone; 51 seats in the House of Representatives election out of 71 while it cleared 14 seats in the senatorial contest out of 24 seats.

In the House of Representatives contest, the breakdown shows that in the Southwest, the APC won four seats in Ondo State; six in Osun State; nine in Oyo State; six in Ogun State; 20 in Lagos State and cleared all six seats in Ekiti State.

Also, in the senatorial contest, the party won one seat in Ondo State; three in Ekiti State; two in Osun State; two in Oyo State; three in Ogun State and three in Lagos State, thereby affirming APC’s political control in the geo-political zone.

With this performance, Oluwajana noted that the Southwest “is the nerve centre of progressive politics in Nigeria. We, thus, urge all those elected on the platform of the APC to uphold the tenets and values of the progressive politics the zone is known for.”

Except in the case of Oyo State where a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Temitope Olatoye was killed on Monday, Oluwajana acknowledged that the elections were peaceful and orderly in all states of the Southwest.

Although he lamented the party’s defeat in Oyo State, Oluwajana assured that the party would reclaim its mandate at the election petition tribunal, which according to him, was the only legitimate means available to the party.

He thanked the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo; APC National Leader, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu; former APC National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande; former Ogun State Governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba and the APC National Deputy Chairman (South), Otunba Niyi Adebayo for their contribution to the party’s victory in the region.

  • Igbo pledge to work with Sanwo-Olu

The Igbo Movement in Lagos State has promised to work with Governor-elect Babajide Sanwo-Olu to ensure his success.

The group hailed him for emerging victorious in last Saturday’s election.

Its convener, Chris Onyekachi, said yesterday that Sanwo-Olu deserved the victory, having campaigned vigorously across the length and breadth of Lagos.

He said from the onset, the Igbo Movement knew that Sanwo-Olu would win the election because of his pedigree and experience he had garnered over the years.

Onyekachi said the group campaigned for the governor-elect because it believed in his ability to take Lagos to the next level and protect the interest of the Igbo.

He said the movement believed that Sanwo-Olu would continue from where his predecessors had stopped.

“It is on record that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu laid the foundation for a modern Lagos when he was governor for eight years. He increased the Internally-Generated Revenue (IGR) from a paltry N600 million monthly to N6 billion monthly. The Babatunde Fashola administration followed the blueprint of Asiwaju Tinubu by moving Lagos to an enviable height. Also, the current governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has further improved on what was laid down.

“We believe Sanwo-Olu will rely on Tinubu’s template to move Lagos to the next level in the area of infrastructure development. We pledge to work with the governor-elect in his bid to take Lagos to the next level. We will not disappoint him,” Onyekachi said.

He said the body believed that Sanwo-Olu would improve on the peaceful co-existence among ethnic groups in Lagos.

  • Sanwo-Olu’s victory well deserved, says APC chief

LAGOS State Governor-elect Babajide Sanwo-Olu deserves his victory at the polls, grand patron of Buhari/Osinbajo Mandate Group in Lagos, Chief Lanre Razak, has said.

He congratulated him and attributed the landslide victory to the goodwill All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu enjoyed among Lagosians.

Razak said the triumph of the APC governorship candidate over his opponent in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Jimmy Agbaje, and the election of 40 lawmakers from the APC into the House of Assembly was the best way the electorate could appreciate Asiwaju Tinubu for his contributions to the socio-economic development of Lagos State.

He said in a statement in Epe that people should expect good governance and more dividends of democracy from the incoming governor, considering his pedigree as a former private sector guru and a participant in the Lagos State public service for years.

He assured Lagosians that Sanwo-Olu would prioritise the interest of the ordinary people.

Razak, ex-commissioner for Public Transportation in Lagos, said: “I want to assure Lagosians that there will be more socio-economic transformation during Sanwo-Olu’s tenure as governor. The people of Lagos State as well as other Nigerians will be happy that they have made the right choice in electing him.

“But let me make this strong appeal to them that all they need do is cooperate with the incoming governor by paying their rates and taxes as and when due and watch Lagos grow in leaps and bounds in infrastructural development and human capital like never before. Everybody will be happy for it.

“He has the fear of God and will always put the interest of ordinary Lagosians first in the development of the state. He believes God gives power through the people, who will be his first priority in office because good governance is about the people.”

Razak, the Balogun General of Epe, attributed Sanwo-Olu’s overwhelming acceptance and support by Lagosians to Asiwaju Tinubu’s sterling performance while in office and subsequently the continued trust and confidence Lagosians have in his leadership.

Tinubu’s leadership traits and administrative style while in office as governor for eight years, he said, remained second to none and a golden era of the state, adding that serving and incoming governors across the states should draw from his fountain of wisdom and wealth of experience.
