Babatunde Michael not carried away by transfer talks

Nigeria forward Babatunde Michael scored a goal and provided an assist for Ukrainian club Volyn in a 3-1 win at Olimpik Donetsk Saturday and after which he insisted he will not lose focus because of speculations about his future.

“I am not distracted for any reasons, there are lots of things to prove than bothering myself with transfer speculations which is normal in football,” Babatunde told AfricanFootball.com.

The 22-year-old Babatunde, who was a star for Nigeria at last year’s World Cup in Brazil, scored a goal in the 72nd minute to restore his side’s lead at 2-1, after he assisted Bicfalvi in the 23rd minute for the opener.

He told AfricanFootball.com he is happy to get another goal after he scored his first in Volyn’s 4-2 win over Hoverla Uzhhorod last weekend.

“This is absolutely not my best but a tip of the iceberg. I know what it is at stake and I have every reason to keep the performance alive,” he said.

“Two goals is not enough for me to rate my form, it is a gradual thing, looking back, I think I have not done enough yet. But I believe I am poised to make up for lost time.

“Yes, I am very happy to score another goal, it is not me but God. Of course, I want to capitalise on the tempo and keep working hard in training. I have a lot of things in mind but I think this is just one of it, to keep fit and work hard on a daily basis. And I think it is really working for me and the team.

“I think scoring more goals will give me a better chance to improve in the next game but my team victory is a big priority for me and for all the players.”

Volyn now have 33 points from 25 games to be sixth on the league table.

Fellow Nigerian, Sherif Isa, was in action for Olimpik Donetsk for 68 minutes before he was substituted by Aleksandr Sytnyk.

Babatunde eyes great season, lauds NFF

VOLYN FC winger Babatunde Michael has a prepared mind for a successful season as Ukrainian league kicks off in style.

Having gone through a turbulent year in 2014, from World cup hand injury to foot injuries, coupled with failed transfer move, the Super Eagles promising star is eager to pay for the lost time, and also ready to lure more suitors with his performance for Volyn FC.

“I’m mentally and physically fit now. Injury has become history, my work rate is very pleasing to my coach and it will help me to prove lot of things as the league resumes again,” said Michael who played 90 minutes in their opening match last week.

“I have experience the bad, the good and the ugly sides of soccer. I have also learn from the setback, I want to win back my confidence in all aspects. I have lost some opportunity due to the injury but I eager to make up for lost time. I am ready to show my stuff.”

The 22-year-old also expressed delight on the way Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) treated him during his trial. “The NFF were in touch with me and i am humbled by that kind gesture.”

“During my injury, I got caring calls from the NFF. It really helps me I am very grateful to everybody in the Glass House for their wonderful support.”

    Michael returns for Eagles

Fit-again Eagles winger Babatunde Michael has told AfricanFootball.com Nigeria will still qualify for AFCON 2015 despite the tight corner they find themselves in.

“Personally, I have not lost hope. I believe we can still make it to the Nations Cup. Instead of me to lose hope, I will urge everybody in the team to declare war on our opponents in tomorrow’s game against Sudan,” Michael told AfricanFootball.com

“I don’t think there is any player in this team that doesn’t want to play at the Nations Cup, and that is the more reason why we cannot lose hope irrespective of the circumstances we are in.

“Of course, we are in a tight corner, but optimism can play a big role in this situation. As a team, we all felt bad losing in Sudan, but at the same time, any other big country could go to Sudan and lose on that pitch.”

The Volyn of Ukraine player added: “I am not trying to defend our loss in Sudan, it has come and gone but we can still be in Morocco next year.

“All our efforts must be channeled towards winning the game tomorrow, we have nothing to do but to beat Sudan, we cannot afford any more slips.”

Babatunde Michael doubtful for Sudan game

Babatunde Michael’s hopes of  featuring for the Super Eagles in the two-legged African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Sudan is in doubt as the midfielder is feared injured.

The Volyn wide man only recently returned from a broken wrist picked up at the Brazil 2014 World Cup, but limped off injured in their cup game against Dnipro after 23 minutes.

Last Friday, while his teammates secured a 2-2 draw at home to Vorskla in the league, he wasn’t listed for the game fuelling speculations his injury might be worse than initially feared.

So far he has made two appearances this season against Dynamo Kiev and Metalurh Zaporizhya the last of which came on the 22nd of last month.

The 21-year-old Michael was a shock inclusion in Stephen Keshi’s World Cup squad, but he justified his inclusion in the team with a strong game against Bosnia and Argentina.

However, his tournament was cut short after a shot from teammate  Ogenyi Onazi fractured his wrist in the Eagles’ last group game against Argentina.

  • MY WORLD CUP DREAMS

    MY WORLD CUP DREAMS

Twenty-one year old Volyn Lutsk of ukraine midfielder, Michael babatunde has a tall dream; that of joining Stephen keshi’s 23-man gang to Brazil. He speaks with MORAKINYO ABODUNRIN about his dreams and aspirations

BABATUNDE Michael is not only praying to make a dream World Cup debut with the Super Eagles, he is equally relishing the prospect of meeting the legendary Lionel Messi.

He could achieve both dreams at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil since Nigeria is grouped along with Iran, Bosnia& Herzegovina and Argentina.  But Michael, like other teammates battling it out in the Super Eagles’ training camp in Atlanta, will have to wait till June 2 to know if he gets Coach Stephen Keshi’s nod for the world’s greatest showpiece in the land of the Samba.

“I have always been a big fan of Lionel Messi; he’s my all-time inspiration,”Babatunde told The Nation Sport & Style through an electronic conversation. “While I was in Nigeria, I was called African Messi by some of my friends because of my left feet. I watched Messi whenever he played in Barcelona in order for me to pick one or two things in his style; yes, it’s working well for me.

“I have developed one of the few things I have learnt so far. I got inspiration from Messi and it will be a big achievement playing at the world Cup with Messi. I have it as a dream, but I am also praying to God to make it possible for me to fly and be able to achieve a good result against Argentina.

“I still have a long way to go in order to be an average player to Messi. I learn every day, I develope everyday and great things do come to me every day. I just need to be focused, which I am already doing.

“I see Messi as an inspiration to so many youngsters coming in the future. I am not in the same category with Messi but I believe with hard work, I can get to the top of my career. For the fact that I love him and I chose to learn from him, would help my career,” he noted as he spoke further on his transformation from a fan of the Super Eagles to a World Cup potential player. Excerpts.

    Life as Super Eagles player

I have grown better as a player and person since I made my dream debut for the Super Eagles. It came at the best time of my career. Super Eagles career has been wonderful because I have been able to see some of the players I used to watch on TV. I knew some of them, some were my friends while I was dreaming of playing along some players but Coach Stephen  Keshi made all dreams of achieving Super Eagles career come true when I was unexpectedly first invited. While I was with Karparty FC in Ukraine, my club coach then had told me about a quality I had never noticed in myself. At a conference, I was commended and pointed out that I have what it takes to be in any team because I was still a raw material for any coach. I never knew until I was invited to the Super Eagles camp, mixing up with my senior colleagues and I was thrilled the day coach Keshi told me at a training session that I should keep on trying more on my skills. He was satisfied and encouraged me on how I can easily maintain the top lane. My life has changed tremendously as a national team player and I am very proud about it

    Confederations Cup challenge

Keshi has one attribute that is not common with many African coaches – the act of giving players self confidence. After dialogue with me at a t training session, I had the opportunity to be in a hotel room with Austin Ejide who used to be my mentor in the team. I told Ejide what the coach told me at the training ground and Ejide also told me the coach was right; that I am player who could give more than what I was doing. I felt worried, I was jittery but he advised me a lot on how to play for the Super Eagles and how I can easily develope under Keshi. What Keshi told me was exactly what I was doing ever since and he noticed it, so I stuck to my style and it worked for me. Keshi is not my coach but a father figure to so many young players home and abroad. And that was how I got my chance to prove myself in Brazil, but the coach still knows much by allowing me to under-study on the bench. But still I could not do enough at the competition before we crashed out.

At every competition, you learn both as a team or player. We have learnt our mistakes and I believe it would be corrected. We were determined to prove a lot at the Confederations Cup but we were not lucky enough to achieve our dreams but that does not mean we can’t fly in Brazil again. Confederations Cup is a big lesson for us to go back home and do our home work which we have done and are ready for the world.

Life with Super Eagles big boys

In the Super Eagles, we are one in-house; I don’t have a caucus, I mingle with everybody and they see me as a brother, though I have friends in the team and I also give respect to some whom deem fit. This is family-team, we see ourselves as friends and brothers. I am talking from my own perspective because I know what kind of relationships I have gotten from some the big boys and it makes it easier.

    His future with Super Eagles

I am here in the team today because I am gathering experience for the future. There is structure in this Super Eagles team, and going by what the coach is doing right now, the youngsters today will be the players of tomorrow, only if there is continuity both in the technical crew and the FA. I am not eager to impress the world but I am hoping to keep my consistency alive in the team. Only consistency will make me better in the team and I am working hard to get to remain in the team for long. I am poised to serve like Daniel Amokachi, George Finidi, Emmanuel Amuneke and a host of other great players.

    About his coaches

That aspect can be attributed to the will of God. At every point in time, my agent always told me to be as humble as I can and listen to my coaches because they were the messiahs at that time. They make you a greater player or mess up with your career. I have been able to listen and enjoy life under some coaches in my career so far. A player of my calibre still has a long way to go and such can either be positive or negative depending on attitude and approach. I am a positive thinker. I love to learn because I gain from learning. I do ask questions whenever I think it’s necessary. I don’t feel shy to ask my opponent questions to excel because my career lies on the pitch and I must always live as an ambitious player. Players like Arjen Robben have learnt from great players in the past, and today people like me look at his playing style. It’s a great thing to learn because you will develop with time. So my coaches always want me because I always come for their advice and take it.

    Eyes on Brazil

This is the most challenging time for almost half of the players; there is no guaranteed shirt for any player. Just as I want to be there, every other player wants to be there too, but the coach’s decision is final. It will be joyful to be part of the final squad to go to Brazil for the World Cup. I have a dream to pursue in the team and I believe going to Brazil with this talented squad could say more about my career. I just have to concentrate on my fitness right now and look forward to God’s favour because it’s only the grace of God, not anything; but I am working hard to convince the coach I am ready to go.

Babatunde Michael: I can be Nigeria’s Messi

    By Innocent Amomoh

Super Eagles invitee, Babatunde Michael, has said that he might emerge as the Nigeria’s version of Argentina’s star, Lionel Messi, when the World Cup 2014 gets underway in Brazil next month, if he makes the final cut.

Michael’s invitation has recently been greeted with lots of criticisms, but the former Heartland of Owerri player told SportingLife that he will justify his inclusion in the team by fighting for a place.

He said: “Great players like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and others gained their international recognition starting as inexperienced players but today they have matured and doing well. It’s all about having the right chances. As a matter of fact, it will be an opportunity to repay the coaching crew for the confidence reposed in me.

“World Cup is a good platform for young players like me to exhibit our potentials. I am ready to work hard and prove that the decision by the coach was right.

  • Super Eagles’ Babatunde Michael : Why I like cooking

Super Eagles’ Babatunde Michael : Why I like cooking

Ukraine-based Super Eagle, Babatunde Michael, is an interesting young man. The Volyn of Ukraine player has had his fair share of challenges, which he gracefully overcame. Aside from football, Michael loves to cook and derives inspiration from the lyrics of Fuji musician, Saheed Osupa. He speaks on various issues in this interview with TAIWO ALIMI.

    WHAT KESHI TOLD ME

To be candid, playing for the Nigerian senior team has affected my life for the better. I had the opportunity to play with the bigger boys because I know I am still coming to their levels. So it is always a marvellous feeling for me being in the national team camp. If I can describe it well, I will say Super Eagles call up has changed my life style. Though l had dreams before I was invited to the national team, my first training session with Coach Stephen Keshi and the big boys really spurred me to dream even bigger. Big Boss told me I can be a great player like the people I was seeing in the team that I just need to be focused and increase my confidence.

    LOVING LIFE IN UKRAINE

Ukraine has been a wonderful place for me. I was able to meet up my challenges and conquer during the trouble times. Yes, I had little issues while I was in Kryvbas but it is a normal thing for every player. Challenges will come, especially when a good thing is about to happen in your career. It may be in different forms but the most important thing is the ability to conquer. I think I need to give kudos to my agent as well because whenever those things bother me, he always comes around to encourage me. So, he plays so many roles in my life. As I said before, Ukraine is a starting ground for me. I believe my commitment and focus here will open a big land mark for me to another dream land when the time is up, but I am really enjoying my career in the cold city of Ukraine.

    FROM KRYVBAS TO VOLYN

Kryvbas was a wonderful place for me to start my career in Europe. I had many offers in France and Germany before I took the decision of playing in Ukraine and Kryvbas played an important role in my development in European football. So, I never regretted playing for the club despite going bankrupt; I achieved a lot while I was with them, counting from my U-20, U-23 and Super Eagles call and the coach always encouraged me to work hard that I am one of the future of my country. I left there because there was an issue and we both agreed after offers came in. As a matter of fact, I am still loyal to the club. I will like to thank Volyn for giving me the opportunity to express my ability. My instant explosion in Volyn was as a result of the confidence that l had. I know I am really enjoying myself at Volyn but I must praise my coach for having a huge confidence in me. The coach has given me a free role in the team and I really thank God for helping me to justify his trust.

I actually made impact in the team from my first game as a substitute. I settled down quickly and felt at home because everybody was eager to see what I can offer. The great form continues in the next three weeks.

    THE BIGGER THEY COME…

As a young, promising player, the best way to show your worth is against the big clubs. And I have been able to do that well. When I was in Kryvbas, my coach used to use me as joker whenever we were playing big clubs like Dnipro, Arsenal Kiev, Dynamo Kiev, Shakhtar Donesk and I always rose to the occasion. I could remember a game against Dnipro handled by one of the respected coaches in the world, Juande Ramos. I was told that he became worried immediately he saw me on the pitch and to make it a great day for us, we beat them and I made a great impact in the victory. Beating Shakhtar Donesk was another great one for us even though I got injured; still, I was able to do my normal killer pass. I won the Man of the Match and Shakhtar players came to congratulate me.

    KESHI THE LUCKY ONE

Keshi has proved he’s better than some foreign coaches. There is no other word to describe the man than the lucky one. Football is absolutely a game of luck with technical ability; without luck, ability may not be useful. But he’s lucky enough to apply his technical ability at the right time and he’s getting result. I think he lives with an element of success. And that is really transforming the career of most of us in the team. Apart from that, he has really distinguished himself as the big daddy, not big boss. Off the pitch, Keshi relates well with his players; he called me so many times while I was injured. Himself and Daniel Amokachi called me to find out the level of my injury because I wanted to be invited for the Italy friendly but I was still not fit for the match. The week after, they still called to say hello and fortunately I came back to the match.

    My World Cup dream

It is going to be real tough for all of us. I don’t think there is automatic shirt for anybody and that will make it very interesting and challenging. I am looking forward to a place because I want to prove to Coach Stephen Keshi that l can re-enact all what l have done at the club level. While at the Confederations Cup, I did not have much playing time but I will like to return to Brazil to prove myself. The Confederations Cup ouster is also a lesson for us to prepare well and give more in terms of hard work and focus. I am confident that Nigeria will soar high next year. It does not matter who we are playing but how prepared we are.

I LOVE LISTENING TO SAHEED OSUPA

Whenever you see me on the street or in my car, I always play Saheed Osupa; I admire him a lot, I grew up listening to his music. Though I do listen to hip hop, l have undying love for fuji music. When you listen to his music, you learn, you see this life as nothing, and when the going is tough, you will derive the encouragement to move on in peace. I just love it.

    I ENJOY COOKING A LOT

I love cooking for myself; I am a very good cook. I can prepare many African dishes but I am still learning to prepare some European food.

“I feel good that my goals are coming, this will put me on my toes and make me to work harder to scoring more goals in the subsequent games. I feel happy here every week because I am having the chance to play and showcase my talent,” Michael told MTNFootball.com.

“I think my first two games have really helped me to settle well in the team, and I wish to continue giving my best to the coach who has so much faith in me.”

He was substituted in the added minute of Friday’s game by Cameroon player Eric Matoukou.
