Anambra shuts ‘baby factory,’ rescues teenagers

Anambra State Government has shut down a notorious baby factory, masquerading as a hospital in Umunya, Oyi Local Government Area of the state.

The illegal facility, operating under the name Mother and Child Hospital and Maternity, is located at No. 1 School Road, near Tansian University.

Acting on months of surveillance and intelligence gathering, the government, working in close collaboration with security agencies, stormed the premises with officials of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA Brigade), arresting key members of the suspected criminal network.

The so-called hospital was found to be operating with a falsified license and was owned by a self-proclaimed medical doctor, Odili Ossai, a native of Delta State.

Authorities have confirmed that the syndicate was involved in the trafficking and exploitation of young girls, aged 15, 19, and 21.

“Many of the victims were reportedly held against their will and forced into pregnancies, with newborns sold into illegal adoption rings.

“Several teenage girls and infants were rescued during the raid and are now receiving comprehensive medical care and psychological support,” the report revealed.

Addressing newsmen, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, described the crackdown as “a significant victory in the ongoing battle against child trafficking, human rights violations, and gender-based abuse.”

“We are determined to rid Anambra of fake medical practitioners and criminal networks that exploit the vulnerable,” he added.

Obidike also highlighted the role of the State Health Facility Accreditation and Monitoring Unit (SHFAMU) and the State Illegal and Anti-Quackery Taskforce Team, established to identify and eliminate unauthorised health facilities across Anambra.

He urged the public to support the government’s efforts by reporting suspicious activities related to healthcare practices.

He added that security operatives, including OCHA-Brigade, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the police, assisted the monitoring team in gaining access into the facility.

“When we gained access into the facility, we discovered six underage pregnant girls, within ages 14, 15,16, 17 and 21, allegedly camped against their wishes.

“We interviewed these girls and they told us they are being camped by one self acclaimed doctor who they identified as Mr Odili Ossai from Delta State, now at large.

  • Police arrest couple for ‘operating baby factory’ in Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom Police Command has arrested a couple for allegedly operating a baby factory at Owot-Uta community in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area.

The woman, identified simply as Mrs. Godwin and a native of Afaha Offiong in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area, was apprehended few days ago by operatives of the Anti-Kidnap Squad of the police command at a private clinic, where she works.

Following her arrest, the police invaded her home yesterday on Transformer-Uruantang Road, Owot-Uta in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area and arrested her husband.

The police reportedly seized a 2007 model Toyota Camry car from the couple.

It was learnt that trouble started when a woman, who was recently delivered of a baby, opted to sell it to raise money for her upkeep.

Mrs. Godwin, who alleged negotiated the sale of the baby at an undisclosed amount, reportedly breached the sharing formula after the baby was sold.

This was said to have led to a quarrel between her and the baby’s mother, who reportedly wanted a greater share of the money.

Feeling cheated and angry, the baby’s mother reported the matter to the police, giving details of the shady deal between her and the suspect.

The police were said to have arrested her and the baby’s mother.

Police spokesman Odiko McDon, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) said he was not aware of the incident.

“I have not been briefed on the incident. I am just hearing of it from you. But I hope before the day ends, the Anti-Kidnapping squad will inform me properly on the matter,” he said.

NAPTIP shuts down Abuja baby factory

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has shut down a baby factory in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Operatives of the agency shut down the “illegal” maternity and baby factory whose Chief Medical Director (CMD) was arrested a few weeks ago for duping women in need of babies.

A statement yesterday by  Adekoye Vincent, on behalf  of NAPTIP’s Head, Press and Public Relations Unit, said the factory is located in New Nyanyan, Abuja.

The statement said: “Operatives of NAPTIP have sealed up a controversial illegal maternity and baby factory whose acclaimed Chief Medical Director was arrested few weeks ago for allegedly swindling several women who were in dire need of babies.

“The sealing-up of the illegal medical outfit, Akuchi Herbal Concept, located on Old Road, around Pure Water area, New Nyanyan, Abuja, was part of the ongoing investigation into the case, which has generated concern among Nigerians, especially relations of the victims.

“…Operatives of NAPTIP, last week, arrested a 38-year-old herbalist, Mr. Chigozie John Emmanuel (aka ‘Akuchi), for allegedly deceiving women into thinking they are pregnant and thereafter giving other people’s babies to them, having collected lots of money.

“Mr. Emmanuel, who is from Enugu State, is the owner of Akuchi Herbal Concept at New Nyanya, Abuja. He was arrested after weeks of diligent surveillance by a combined team of officers of the agency and those of the Department of State Services (DSS).

“His arrest was based on a previous arrest by the police, of a woman whom they saw with a baby in Abuja enroute Minna, Niger State. Based on their suspicion, they detained and questioned the woman on the identity of the baby she carried. She admitted to being a patient of Mr. Emmanuel, whom she said administered some herbs on her after years of infertility.

“The latest operation was coordinated by the Director, Investigation and Monitoring Department, Mr. Greg Esele, on the directive of the Director-General, Dame Julie Okah- Donli.”

  • How couple ran Igando ‘baby factory’

How couple ran Igando ‘baby factory’

FACTS emerged yesterday that the couple paraded on Monday by the police  for allegedly running a baby factory in Igando, Lagos State, operated from three locations.

A 15-year-old boy and two toddlers were rescued from the couple’s home yesterday by  officials of  Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development. House 3, Alhaji Jimoh Sodiq Street, Igando,  was said to be used as an orphanage by Adeola and Binta Adebayo. The government has sealed off the place.

The couple, it was learnt, usually kept young expectant mothers at 1, Treasure Palace Close, off Hand of Fair Bus Stop, Ikotun-Igando Road or in an undisclosed location for  months and only brought them to the ‘orphanage’ when they were about to give birth.

A petty trader on the street, Iyabeji, said the suspects had been operating the ‘orphanage’ for years, adding that she usually saw heavily pregnant women, ‘’who disappeared after they must have been delivered of their babies’’.

Iyabeji said the expectant mothers  patronised her shop, adding that the Matron, Iya Dupe, had worked in the orphanage since 2016.

She said: “I never knew it was a baby factory or an illegal orphanage. You can see how quiet this street is and most of the bungalows have very high fences. So, it is almost impossible for anyone to know what happens behind those fences.

“But I know that I usually see heavily pregnant women come from the orphanage to buy pepper and tomato from me. After sometime, I won’t see the young women again and later on, I will see new ones.

“Also, I know that the mama (matron) who takes care of the children is Iya Dupe. She has been working for the orphanage since 2016. She doesn’t stay there. She used to complain that she wanted to leave because they were not paying her well. She said they paid her N16,000 per month and when she complained, they increased it to N20,000 and they were not regular with the payment.

“She was here this morning. I don’t know where she has gone to. She would have told you more. The teenage boy (Chinedu Dike) you saw inside the orphanage grew up there. No one adopted him and so, all the children there see him as their elder brother.”

The Nation saw children’s footprints at a playground constructed on the left hand side of the ‘orphanage’. Although the rooms had the smell of babies, there was nothing, not even trash on the premises, for investigators to analyse.

Asked if she was ever brought to the ‘orphanage’, six-month-pregnant Precious Emmanuel said no, adding that she was taking to two locations.

She said they were four expectant mothers in all, including Adebayo’s daughter, Balikis.

Emmanuel said: “There was a house I was kept in when I came last November. After we celebrated Christmas, we were relocated to another side. Initially, I wanted to abort my pregnancy but when I got to her, she advised me to keep the baby that after I have been delivered of the baby, she would give the baby out and settle me. I didn’t understand what the settlement meant.

“I wanted abortion because the man who impregnated me maltreated me and sent me packing. My sister also did not want the pregnancy and she asked me to abort it and return to Akwa Ibom. My sister doesn’t know I didn’t abort the baby and she doesn’t know I am still in Lagos.

“We were four pregnant women. Her daughter-in-law, her husband’s daughter, myself and the other lady.  No one paid anyone to impregnate us. The person who brought me requested I don’t tell my sister where I was.

“I feel like my pregnancy is seven months but the scan keeps saying six months. She usually took us for scan and she registered us with a private hospital. I don’t know the name of the hospital but I have their card.

“She treated me fine. I usually ate normal food such as garri, rice, beans. It is not true that I used to help her sell drinks. I don’t do anything like that. I only know that Favour used to live with her before she brought her to join us. Her husband’s daughter is Balikis. She is in their house. They never brought me to the ‘orphanage’. This is the first time I am coming here. Since I got to her house, it was only the four pregnant women I saw.”

Mrs. Adebayo, who told reporters at the Police Headquarters in Ikeja on Monday that she was from Abia State but married to a Yoruba man, changed tune yesterday.

She  also denied  being Igbo, insisting that she was originally from Kasaid: “We came for closure of an illegal orphanage. We discovered that the home has not fully registered with the government. She put up an application, we came to access the home and we told her that the home was inappropriate for orphanage operation in Lagos State.

“She has not met the operational guidelines of Lagos State and she was instructed not to practice. At the time we came here for inspection, there were no children. But today, you can see for yourself the condition of the two children we found here.

“The children have been evacuated and would be taken to appropriate homes. The woman would face the law at the end of investigation. Police have commenced investigation and the public would be well briefed.

“It has been established that the woman is operating under so many names. We would tie everything to gether and take necessary actions.

“Already the government has warned all orphanages operating illegally in the state to come and register within 14 days. Any orphanage that refuses to comply with this directive within the given period would face sanctions. We appeal to the public to continue to provide us with useful information on orphanages suspected to be running illegal businesses.”

Couple arrested as police uncover ‘baby factory’

The police have arrested a couple, Adeola  and Binta Adebayo for allegedly running a baby factory at Igando on the outskirts of Lagos.

They were arrested on Sunday between 6:10pm and 10pm by operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) in Ikeja, following a tip-off.

According to Police Commissioner, Imohimi Edgal, the suspects usually harboured young expectant mothers at their 1, Treasure Palace Close, off Hand of Fair Bus Stop, Ikotun-Igando Road residence.

Edgal, who paraded the suspects at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja yesterday, said they usually sold the babies after being born without the mothers’ consent.

The police chief said: “They harbour young pregnant girls until they are delivered of their babies after which these babies are taken from them and sold without the consent of the young mothers.

“During the raid, three young women were rescued namely; Favour Osikwemeh, 19, (six months pregnant), Precious Emmanuel, 27, (seven months pregnant), and Onome Oputi, 25, (nine months pregnant).

“The victims will be handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for care while the couple will be handed over for possible prosecution.”

Osikweme told reporters that her friend, Lepa, introduced her to the place.

She said: “I was not told it is a baby factory. I was staying with my friend called Lepa when she told me that her place is too small and offered to take me where I will be delivered of my child.

“I have been there since December last year. The woman told my mum that I am working with her but we didn’t negotiate about payment for my child.”

Emmanuel said  she became worried after getting pregnant for a foreigner, adding that she was introduced to the baby factory by her sister.

“My sister took me to the woman after I was impregnated by a foreigner. The woman then promised to settle me as soon as I was delivered of my baby,” she said.

However, the couple denied the allegation, insisting that they were only assisting the women, who in turn, helped them with their business.

Binta, 40,  who also gave her name as Nene Okoro, claimed that one of the three women was her daughter-in-law, who has lived with them for over four years.

She said: “We are not running any baby factory. I have never sold any baby. Two of the three women only help me with my business. I sell wholesale drinks and they assist me.

“The other woman is my daughter-in-law, who has been living with us for over four years. If I sold babies, how come I didn’t sell my two grandchildren she had earlier.

“I believe some neigbours we have land dispute with are trying to frame my husband and I. I am from Abia State but my husband is Yoruba. We are innocent.”

  • Police arrest pastor for operating baby factory

    •Expectant mothers, others rescued

The Abia State Police Command has arrested and paraded a pastor for allegedly operating a church and a medical centre which were converted into a baby factory. The church is located at 252 Faulks Road in Aba.

Parading the pastor, Christopher Adebanya Tochukwu, as well as other suspected criminals in Umuahia, the state capital, Police Commissioner Leye Oyebade said the cleric has allegedly been raping the expectant mothers at his medical centre.

The police chief said when one of the girls was interrogated, she claimed that Tochukwu had been raping them.

He recalled an instance when the pastor was stabbed on the neck when he attempted to sleep with one of the girls.

Oyebade said one of the girls, Imeobong Udoh, told interrogators that her two-month-old baby delivered at the centre was forcefully taken away by the pastor’s wife and sold to an unknown person.

Other girls who were rescued by the police are: Jane Ikechukwu, Blessing Ariet and Gift Paul.

Three of them were at different stages of their pregnancy.

The police chief said men from Ariaria Police Station, who handled the operation, rescued a two-week-old baby girl.

He said the baby had been taken to a motherless babies’ home for care and custody.

Blessing said the pastor attempted to rape her, adding that when she refused, he beat her up with a belt and left several marks on her body.

She recalled that Tochukwu attempted to sleep with her one day but had to stop “when his wife suddenly came into the room and he pretended that he was examining me”.

Jane said the pastor’s wife, who is on the run, was aware of her husband’s activities.

She said: “His wife said when he sleeps with the girls, the babies in our wombs are fed naturally”.

Oyebade said operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad at Obehie Division arrested Godspower Emeka, 28, of Orji Street in Obehie, for allegedly stealing Mercy Emeka, 3, of the same address.

He said Mercy was sold to Kelvin Ogbunigwu, 35, of Omuma in Rivers State for N150,000.

Oyebade added: “The baby has been recovered and the suspect is her uncle.”

When The Nation spoke with Emeka, he said the load of feeding 11 children was too much for him.

He said: “So, when one of my friends, Ogbunigwu, told me that there was someone who would buy the baby, I sold her to him.”

Asked why he did not sell one of his children, since he said he had children, he said: “It is the devil, and I regret my actions. I plead that my sister should forgive me for my devilish action.”

Oyebade said the command’s anti-crime plans had started yielding fruits.

The police chief said men from Ndiegoro Division engaged a five-man robbery gang in a gun duel near a first generation bank in Aba.

He said: “Two of the hoodlums were gunned down, while three others escaped. Their operational car, a Nissan Laurel with registration number AE 221 ARG and other items, were recovered.”

Police smash ‘baby factory’ in Akwa Ibom

    •11 suspected traffickers arrested

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 42-year old woman, Comfort Edem, and 10 others for allegedly running an illegal maternity home (baby-making factory) and selling babies. Addressing reporters yesterday in Uyo, the state capital, Police Commissioner Murtala Mani said its Anti-Kidnapping Unit smashed the syndicate. The police chief said Edem was arrested on October 13, following intelligence report that she was running an illegal maternity home for selling children.

Mani, who spoke through the command’s spokesperson Cordelia Nwawe, an assistant superintendent of Police (ASP), added that the suspects sold each baby for N450,000.

He said: “Information at our disposal led to the interception of a syndicate, which trafficks babies in Akwa Ibom Stat. On October 13, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit in the state arrested a woman for running an illegal maternity home.

“She specialises in making teenage expectant mothers sell their babies. Once the babies are born, they are sold and trafficked out of the state. We have intercepted her; she is here in front of you.

“…The girls had reliably informed us that this is not the first time they had sold their babies for N450,000.”

The police also paraded another syndicate for allegedly selling children for N500,000. Mani said the police had rescued a two-month-old girl who was sold to a woman in Rivers State.

The police chief said the command also arrested a native doctor on June 13 for allegedly killing his 14-year-old lover’s son.

He added that the suspect also fed the dogs with the boy’s arms and buried the other parts.

Mani said: “When information got to the police about the killing, we moved quickly. But before we got there, he had exhumed the body. We met him while he was doing it …at the particular point. We were able to get the skull of the 14-year-old lad from him.

“Having conducted an autopsy on the boy’s body, the police deposited it in the mortuary. The man has confessed to the crime and he has been charged to court.”

Edem denied running an illegal maternity home for trafficking in children.

The mother of the rescued baby, Comfort Effiong, 23, from Ikot Akpantuk in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, said she sold her baby for N400,000.

Effiong said: “I sold my baby because I did not have help from anybody. I did not see the man who impregnated me.”

Anieyo Inyang, 58, an osteopath, also from Ikot Akpantuk, said he was arrested because the mother of the child accused him of complicity in the sale of the baby.

Inyang, who runs Anieyo Family Clinic, said he directed Effiong to his sister who linked her up to the baby buyer.
