  • ‘I got married at 17, had 21 children from 12 ‘baby mamas’

‘I got married at 17, had 21 children from 12 ‘baby mamas’

Raymond Hogans, who celebrated his 64th birthday in St. Louis, Missouri America recently, narrates his life journey with our reporter, Taiwo Abiodun

HE is a man of few words. His infectious smile could melt an ice bag. He is cool and gentle and humility personified. He walks in the manner of a king and dresses as if it is for a dressing competition; always in his cap and trade mark bling-bling.

Raymond Hogans’ dress sense is unique. He was a ladies’ man in his youth. He is always spotted in the crowd not because of his light skin but for his dress sense. In fact, you would hardly know he is going to work.

At 64, the soft-spoken gentleman and grandfather has many attributes that make him earn respect from his colleagues and co-workers. Welcome to the life of Ray Hogans; a man who has seen it all.

Asked to introduce himself, he parted his lips with a smile. “My name is Raymond Hogans. I came from a poor family in Mississippi. My grandmother had 13 kids, but they are all dead. She decided to leave Mississippi and came down to St. Louis here to settle down.

“I graduated from Central High School, St. Louis, Missouri.”

    Marriage

The ladies’ man did not deny his virility as a young man.

He said: ”I got married at the age of 17. I went into the military from 1978 to 1984. I have 14 girls, seven boys, 89 grandchildren and 12 baby mamas.”

In America where child support (welfare of the children) is compulsory and could land  the father in jail if he defaults, the man, who loves his children, said he paid child support for 40 years.

In his own words: ”I paid child support for 40 years and I am free now. I stopped paying it three years ago. I worked all my life paying child support.

What would have happened if he didn’t pay? the reporter asked. To this, he said he could end up in jail, according to the Law of the United States of America. ”I didn’t want to be jailed, so I had to work for 40 hours every week for 40 years.”

Explaining what led him into having many baby mamas, he said his first marriage was bad.

He said: “I was young then and was there messing around with a lot of girls, and it happened!” Asked why he took another wife, he responded: ”The same thing. I failed being a youth. It was bad.”

Pressed further on how he got the fourth, the fifth and the rest, he also attributed it to ”my bad marriage”.

    First baby mama

Asked about his first baby mama, Hogans said: ”My first Baby Mama was my first wife. We grew up together as kids in high school, but she died later.”

Hogans said he had both white and black baby mamas who had children for him.

He said: “I had a white Baby Mama who had 11 kids for me while the rest black baby mamas had one, two or three kids, and altogether, they are 21 kids.”

    No regrets

Asked whether he regretted having a lot of children and baby mamas, he nodded his head in the negative. ”No, no, I love my children. That is my hobby,” he said. He however said he does not need any more kids or baby mamas as he has put a full stop to it.

Hogans could not keep his baby mamas for long. Asked about all his baby mamas now, he said in low tone: “Four are dead and eight are still living, as they went their ways to remarry.”

Asked what he would say if he were to counsel the youths of today, he said with a smile: “Stay in school. Have education. Don’t make all these babies, because you will never have money!”

Could he have followed in his father’s footsteps? The 64-year-old man dropped his head and threw a bombshell: “I don’t know my dad. He died when I was barely six years old. So I didn’t know him. My mother trained me. “

Hogans said her mother had six children with him as the eldest.

“My mother had six of us: three boys and three girls, and I am the oldest,” he said. He however added that his children do not give him money because he too works to sustain himself.

“No, they don’t give me money for I can take care of myself,” he told the reporter.

Asked whether his children do ask him why he had many women and large number of children and grandchildren, he responded: ”Yes, they do. But then I was young. I messed around with a lot of women. I see all my children and grandkids when I want to.”

Hogans, however, said he does not want babies again. ”No, no, I don’t want babies again,” he said, raising his hands up in total surrender.

Asked about his dressing, the 64year-old looked at himself and smiled. He fiddled with his grey beard and said: ”I always dress good. I don’t know why.  I have about 200 caps, a lot of designer sneakers and shoes. I have a lot of necklaces and hand chains. I love to wear good clothes , bling bling and shoes. Yes, I love to dress good.”

  • Baby found under trailer in Kaduna

A three-month-old baby boy whose mother, Aisha Yau attempted to kill has been rescued from her by Kaduna state government.

Kaduna State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Hafsat Baba Muhammed rescued rescued the baby in Kaduna on Thursday from Aisha who appeared not to be in her right frame of mind.

Aisha, who stays under the popular Kawo bridge in Kaduna North LGA was said to have purposely kept the baby under a trailer’ wheel with expectation that, when the trailer moves, it will crush the baby.

To ensure that was done, she stood aloof and prevented people from carrying the baby while persuading the driver of the truck to start the engine.

But unfortunately for her and fortunately for the infant, a passerby quickly drew the attention of the commissioner to the scene who in company of other top government functionaries rushed over to rescue the child at about 11:00hours of Thursday.

But the lady, Aisha said, she could not explain how she found herself in Kaduna. She hinted that, it was the crisis in her state, Taraba that scattered her family members without a trace of any of them more than a year ago.

“My name is Aisha Yau and I am 20 years old. I am from Taraba State but can’t find any of my family after the crisis that occurred in our community sometimes ago.

“I did not know how I got myself here in Kaduna. But when I came, one of my suitors though I don’t know his name but I know his shop in Kasuwan Baici here in Kaduna. He got me pregnant but he denied the pregnancy and refused to take care of me and the baby. So, I want to kill the baby to save myself from shame”, she said.

Speaking with newsmen shortly after taken the custody of the mother and child, the commissioner said, she has directed social department in her ministry to take the young woman to the hospital for medical examination and treatment before repatriating her and her child back to Taraba State.

“I was at a meeting when I got a distress call that a young woman was about to kill her own child. Fortunately for me, I have some people with me and that was how we rushed to Kawo.

“But on getting there, she was still waiting for the driver of the truck to move so he can crushed the baby. We have to tactically move her away why we rescued the baby.

“We have both of them with us. We shall take her to hospital tomorrow for possible rehabilitation because she’s not that bad in her sense of reasoning. By the time she is stabilised, we will communicate the Ministry of Women Affairs in Taraba State to see her possibility of reuniting her with her family.

“She wanted the child dead because the man she claimed to be responsible for the baby boy was not ready to take the paternity of the child, hence her plan to kill it and move on with her live which is quite unfortunate”, she added.

  • Baby factories return in Imo

The menace of trade in humans especially the sale of babies in Imo State, otherwise known as baby factory, was thought to have been drastically reduced if not completely erased but recent records prove otherwise. From available records, there is a massive resurgence of baby traffickers, suggesting that the operators had only gone underground to escape the heat of security clampdown.

In fact the baby factories have returned under various guises and more sophisticated. To beat security checks and recruit unsuspecting and vulnerable teenagers, the operators have devised fronts under which they carry out the heinous crime without raising any suspicion. The baby factory operators now float orphanages where they hide to recruit, impregnate young girls and lure or coerce them to sell their babies for paltry sums of money ranging from N50, 000.00 to N150, 000.00 depending on the sex.

Between 2011 to 2012 when the baby factory business was booming, not less than 2500 babies were rescued from the traffickers in the Southeast, with Imo State constituting the highest percentage according to the statistics released by the Campaign for Democracy (CD).

Security operatives in the state had already ruled that baby factory has been decimated and as such does not pose security threat anymore. But that is not to be, the evil had grown in leaps and bounds in the last three years after a period of incubation.

Apparently acting under intelligence, the state government recently uncovered 157 Baby Factories during a massive clampdown on the illegal social homes and a large number of children and pregnant teenagers.

The special assistant to the Imo State governor on Non-Governmental Organisations and Allied Matters, Rev. Dr. Simeon Nwulu, said the action became imperative to check the resurgence of Baby factories in the state.

According to the governor’s aide, his office embarked on visitation of the 27 Local Government Areas of the State of the state and found out many social homes, majority of which were operating as fake Non-Governmental Organizations.

In his words, “we’re doing our best to ensure such a thing does not exist in our society anymore. We’ve revoked so many fake homes. Out of 272 homes across the state, only 15 were genuine others are fake. Some of them are registered with the government but their activities are not genuine and we’ve seized their licences. Very soon we will be charging some of them to court over their nefarious activities.

“At the same time, this office has moved to ensure we stop illegal sales of children because the rate at which children are being marketed and sold like ordinary articles of trade is very alarming. At a peanut, the destiny of a child is destroyed and most of these adopters are not well-to-do to take care of these children”.

He advised Churches within the state to get deeply involved in building motherless babies homes and old people’s homes and encourage well-to-do individuals in the society to adopt such children.

“If somebody becomes motherless, it does not mean that such a child cannot be somebody in the future.

“I’m glad some churches have shown interest to partner with government on that. Some of them have picked the forms to establish social homes. But we’re asking them to make the environment very conducive for the children and not to use it and make money because we know that nobody can take care of the children more than the church.

“We’re going house-to house appealing to people to adopt these children because we have over 2000 motherless children in different homes whose future seem very bleak without hope. As someone God has blessed, even if you have 10 children, please try and give these ones’ life and hope”, he appealed.

He also disclosed that his office was working hard to ensure NGOs such as churches start fulfilling their mandate such as building institutions to help the needy and the poor.

“The bedrock of every NGO is the church. Unfortunately, the present day church is not like the former church. The present day church is no longer involved in humanitarian or spiritual activities, but materialism and flamboyance.

“Before now, churches built schools and it was free of charge for people. Churches used to take care of the welfare of the needy, but today schools owned by churches are the most expensive in the country, the same as their hospitals. In fact, everything that belongs to the church is for the rich and not the poor and needy.

“We want to ensure that churches start building hospitals. If you look around, churches are no longer building hospitals. They are only building schools that will get them quick money. So, we’re asking churches to start building hospitals to complement the effort of the state government. The government is ready to assist them to equip the hospitals so that they will be for the benefit of our people. That is what churches used to do in the past”.

The governor’s aide stated that another issue his office was battling was to “ensure that NGOs partner with us to see how we can resuscitate the mentally-deranged people in our society, premature births or births out of wedlock.

“In our society, if a young lady conceives out of wedlock, it becomes a taboo and seems that such a girl her hope is lost. Today, we’re saying that such girls their hopes are not lost, it’s a mistake. If a car breaks down along the way, it does not mean, the car will no longer function. The car will still get to its destination. If a young girl gets an unwanted pregnancy, it does not mean she cannot be somebody again. She needs to be encouraged from the church, communities and even the government. This is one of our jobs”.

He said to curb such situations, the state government had fashioned out skills acquisition programmes for all those concerned to ensure that such girls were empowered with skills and funds to live a normal life again.

But the State Police Command maintained that there has not been any report about baby factory or baby trafficking in the state lately.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Enwerem, a deputy superintendent of police, said that baby factory has been greatly decimated in the state.

He said, “Baby trafficking is one of the crimes that have been dealt a terrible blow in Imo Command and there has not been any report of Baby Factory or trafficking in recent times. Anybody with any report in that regard should come forward”.

  • Baby theft: Court remands female suspect in prison

An Osun Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ile-Ife, Osun, on Thursday, remanded a female suspect, Mrs Adebayo Bunmi, 27, in prison custody over alleged theft of an 18-day-old baby.

Magistrate Muhibah Olatunji refused the bail of the accused person but asked the Defence Counsel, Mr Alaba Awoseemo, to come with a written application for the consideration of her bail.

Olatunji ordered the remand of the accused in Ilesa Prison custody, pending the ruling of the bail application, saying that this would serve as a deterrent to others.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Ona Glory, told the court that the accused committed the offence on July 1, 2018 around 05:30 p.m. at Itasin Area, Modakeke in Ife North east Local Government area of Osun.

Glory said that the accused stole an 18-day-old boy, David Adebode, son of Mr & Mrs Peter Adebode, with intent to deprive them permanently.

He explained that the offence contravened Section 371 (1) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2003.

The accused however, pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of baby theft.

The Defence Counsel, Mr Alaba Awoseemo, applied for the bail of the accused in most liberal terms and pledged that his client would not jump bail but would provide substantial sureties.

The case was adjourned until July 23, for mention.
