ENGLISH FA Cup replay: Moses, Mikel back for Chelsea

Super Eagles duo of Victor Moses and John Obi Mikel will be available for Chelsea’s FA Cup fourth-round replay with Brentford on Sunday.

Moses and Mikel missed Thursday’s Europa League win at Sparta Prague. They were rested, after winning the Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria. The pair were an integral part of the Coach Stephen Keshi-led side at the 2013 AFCON in South Africa.

David Luiz and Demba Ba will also make their return into the Chelsea line up after missing the Europa League win in midweek

Luiz was suspended, Ba ineligible, while John Terry and Ashley Cole were unused substitutes.

Cole had a cold and Terry was not risked after a setback in his recovery from a knee injury, but the captain is in line to return in defence against the Bees. Oriol Romeu (knee) is a long-term absentee.

Provisional squad: Cech, Turnbull, Hilario, Ivanovic, Cole, Luiz, Ramires, Lampard, Torres, Mata, Oscar, Mikel, Hazard, Ba, Ferreira, Marin, Cahill, Terry, Azpilicueta, Benayoun, Bertrand, Ake, Moses.

Meanwhile Bees manager Uwe Rosler has no new injury problems ahead of the replay at Stamford Bridge.

Midfielder Kevin O’Connor is still out with an ankle problem and striker Farid El-Alagui remains sidelined with a knee injury.

Rosler though is worried his side’s best chance of victory has already gone.

He told the Fulham Chronicle: “The surprise factor has gone. We had the chance to beat them because they underestimated us the first time around, but they won’t do that again. They will take us more seriously this time around.”

  • Reps back sack of 4,029 workers

Members of the House of Representatives yesterday backed the sack of 4, 029 workers by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

They urged President Goodkuck Jonathan to direct the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) to absorb the sacked workers into Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDA).

The decision of the lawmakers followed the adoption of the report of the Committee on Public Petitions on the dismissal of the workers.

Chairman of the Committee Uzo Azubuike said the committee has no problem with the mass sack because due process was followed by the management.

He said: “Our Committee had no problem with the exercise because facts before us revealed that the commission had to act against redundancy.

“As a result, when the new platform was deployed by the private partner, it turned out that one person can now do the work of five people in 10 minutes.”

  • 26 Yoruba groups back Fayemi, Aregbesola for 2014

Twenty six pan-Yoruba groups yesterday adopted Governors Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti) and Rauf Aregbesola (Osun) for second terms.

The groups, under the aegis of the O’odua Nationalist Coalition (ONAC), said their decision was to protect the “integrity of the Yoruba and prevent a decline in the growing public trust in governance.”

ONAC is a coalition of Yoruba and Itsekiri cultural and political groups, including O’odua People’s Congress (OPC), O’odua Liberation Movement (OLM), O’odua Students Coalition (OSTUC), Yoruba Farmers and Artisan Movement (YFAM), Covenant Group (CG), the Pro-National Conference Organisations (PRONACO-Southwest) and Yoruba Federalist Coalition (YFC).

The group made the decision in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, after a meeting that began on Tuesday evening and ended at dawn yesterday. The meeting was attended by over 200 delegates from across the Southwest.

In a statement read by Mr. Akinwunmi Adebola, a lawyer, ONAC said: “We are compelled by historical circumstances to adopt the governors of Ekiti and Osun states for second terms. We realise that Nigeria, as it is presently constituted, cannot lead to the total liberation of the Yoruba people, given its self-imposed contradictions and with the country currently being managed like a garrison state.

“The two governors have laid a solid foundation for genuine transformation of the Southwest, through giant leaps in the areas of tourism, environmental protection, economic growth and security. They have rekindled the floundering spirit of our forebears and their legacy of human capital development.

“We must ensure that no force on earth reverses the gains that have been recorded in the past two years that the Southwest broke loose from hate, division and underdevelopment.

“There are still many things to be done in the Southwest, but there is hope that the current leaders have the understanding, commitment and the skill to improve the two states, as against the eight years of waste and mismanagement that characterised the Southwest in the past.

“We will work hard to ensure Fayemi’s and Aregbesola’s victory in the 2014 elections.”

  • Buhari urges BoT to back merger talks

Buhari urges BoT to back merger talks

Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) leader Gen. Muhammadu Buhari is committed to the merger talks among opposition political parties, the CPC said yesterday.

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the CPC, the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and others are in talks to challenge the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015.

Last week in Ibadan, former ANPP presidential candidate and ex-Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shakarau similarly expressed optimism about the workability of the merger talks.

But the PDP has continued to pillory the talks, saying the opposition parties’ merger will not work.

The CPC’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin, said the failure of the talks could spell doom for the country. He spoke to reporters in Abuja yesterday.

Fashakin said to underscore the CPC’s commitment, its former presidential candidate, Gen. Buhari, personally submitted a memorandum to the party’s Board of Trustees on why the merger must work.

Fashakin said: “This merger will succeed, contrary to the expectations of the PDP which has been skeptical. The PDP leaders do not know what they are saying at all. I think they have become jittery.

“The merger will definitely succeed because the parties involved understand clearly that the salvation of the Nigerian state depends on it. So, the leaders understand the responsibility thrust on them. That is why they will not allow it to fail.

“If the merger fails, Nigeria will certainly be on the precipice

“Our party is committed to the merger. As a matter of fact, Gen. Buhari personally brought a memo to the Board of Trustees (BoT) on the merger proposal.

“And all the BOT members were given a chance to air their views. They all applauded the proposal and spoke in unison that the CPC should go into it. We are fully committed to the merger talks.”

As part of its commitment to the merger plan, the CPC on Saturday named an 18-man negotiation committee, which will be inaugurated on Wednesday.

The statement said: “The Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) is pleased to release the names of the members of the Merger / Alliance Committee for its proposed merger with other Progressive Parties.

“The following eminent Nigerians have been so appointed: a former Deputy Governor of Bauchi State, Alhaji Garba Gadi (chairman); the Governor of Nasarawa State, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura; a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Professor Tam David-West ; Alhaji Sabo Nanono; Senator Hadi Sirika; Chief Okoi Obono Obla; Owelle Oscar Udoji; Ife Oyedele; the National Publicity Secretary of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties(CNPP), Mr. Osita Okechukwu; Chief Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba ; Mrs. Lucy Ajayi; Air Cdre Bernard Banfa; Engr. B. D. Lawal; Dr Haruna Yerima; Mr James Ocholi , SAN; a former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Oyo State, Alhaji Adebayo Shittu; Prof. Buba Bajoga; and Dr. Osagie Ehanire.

“Meanwhile, the inauguration of these Eminent Nigerians shall be done on Wednesday, 16th January, 2013 at 10:00am at the Party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.

The Party’s National Leader, Gen. Buhari, shall be present to charge the appointees on the party’s expectation.”

  • North’s governors back Tambuwal against plotters

North’s governors back Tambuwal against plotters

Some governors of the North have launched a battle to stave off the plot to impeach House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Tambuwal.

Also, there is pressure on Tambuwal to remove from key committees’ those behind the plot to destabilise the House.

The Nation learnt that some governors, led by the Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, prevailed on members of the House, (mostly from the North) who are against the Speaker, to shelve the plot.

A source, who spoke in confidence, said Aliyu told lawmakers that they would not succeed.

The source said: “Aliyu has made calls to the co-ordinator of the ‘Operation Clean’ group and some members on why the North cannot afford to lose the office of the Speaker. He said North’s governors felt it is better to stabilise the House than going through another crisis.

“The governor also condemned the recourse to “politics of bitterness” by some of the aggrieved lawmakers. He pleaded with them to shelve their plan.

“The Niger State governor felt bad that the arrowhead of ‘Operation Clean’ is from his state, creating an impression that he is not sincere in leading the 19 governors of the North”.

It was also learnt that about five to six governors from the North, including Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, have intervened.

Some of the governors might still meet with the aggrieved lawmakers later on how to ensure a sustainable rapprochement between them and the Speaker, according to a source.

The “Operation Clean” group suspended the emergency session of first term members it planned for yesterday.

When our correspondent visited Transcorp Hilton, an official simply said: “I think this event is not holding here again.”

A principal officer of the House confirmed the anger of most members against the group. He said: “The Speaker is under pressure to remove these people from key committees but he thinks that the House should overlook any infractions committed by any member.

“But members are insisting that those plotting against the Speaker took advantage of their committees’ interaction with some forces in government to source for seed cash to destabilise the House.”

Following the plot being coordinated by a lawmaker from Niger State, Mohammed Sani Idris Kutigi, the Speaker summoned an Executive Session.

But the chairman, House Committee on Information and Public Affairs, Zakari Mohammed, at a media session yesterday, said the unity of the House was not in doubt.

“I am a member of the House and I was at the executive session, but I cannot confirm what did not happen.

“What I can tell you is that we are 360 members who elected our own leadership and the unity of this House is not negotiable,” he said.

The convener of the meeting of the 260 first timer, told The Nation that the planned meeting was not intended to cause disharmony in the House.

Kutigi, who said impeachment was far from the issues on the minds of the conveners, stressed that the content of the text message that was sent to all members of the House was mischievously misinterpreted by “sycophants”.

He also said the leadership of the House was aware of the planned meeting.

“The truth is, impeachment is a process but I wonder where people get their facts from. The fact remains that it is a group of members, formed at the inception of the current House and led by Abudlmumin Jubrin, but after the inauguration, it was dispersed.

“So, the text message was a reunion of members coming together after a long while.

“To prove that there was no malicious motive to the meeting, the leadership of the House was informed of the meeting that was supposed to hold today (yesterday)

“It was not a clandestine meeting; the text was sent to the 360 members of the House. The older members were free to join us. If it was meant to create disharmony in the House we would not have met with the Deputy Speaker, Emeka Ihedioha.

“We met the Deputy Speaker on Tuesday to intimate the Speaker about the meeting, but he was not available at that particular time; he was at an engagement outside the complex. So, if we are planing to unseat him, is it logical to inform him of the meeting and send text to everybody, when we know that we all have our differences?

“Speaking of issues, there were no issues to be discussed, we have not met, if we had met, issues would have been raised and addressed or find means of addressing them, so there was no agenda”.

“If impeachment was on the agenda, how can I put my name on the text. The text was a catch; it was meant to make members curious enough to want to attend.”

According to the lawmaker, the planned meeting was eventually shelved as a result of the executive session that was attended by all the lawmakers.

“By the time the text was sent, the leadership found it necessary to sit for an executive session, and since executive session usually holds for the Speaker to get feedback and comments from members, by the time we concluded it, we felt that there was no need for it any more,” Kutigi added.
