  • Dangote backs AfCFTA

The President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has called for conscious efforts at deepening African regional market by African investors and governments to aid rapid growth and development of the Continent. He commended the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) arguing that it should be supported by all if the economy of the continent must grow.

Speaking during “One to One Conversation” at the on-going 5th annual Financial Times African Summit, in London he said the key to Africa’s economic growth and strength is in the development of the regional market, saying “Regional markets in Africa must work.”

Dangote said Africans must patronise African markets which is why the free trade agreements by African nations is the direction to go to strengthen African markets.

He said: “We need to trade with ourselves as a continent because we have all it takes  as we are home to abundant raw material and human resources. This is why the free trade agreement between neigbouring countries is a welcome development”.

  • OPC chieftain backs Fed Govt’s anti-graft fight

NATIONAL President of Odua Peoples Congress-Reformed (OPC-R) Chief Dare Adesope yesterday backed Federal Government’s anti-graft campaign.

In a statement in Lagos, Adesope hailed the anti-corruption fight by the Buhari-led administration, but urged the government to ensure fairness in its approach.

The statement reads in part: ‘’This government is fighting corruption yes, I must confess that it is in line and fully agreed with my body chemistry.

’’I am not against the present government, what I am crusading is the act to do it right. What I am against is ‘selective judgment’. My stand is, any corrupt politician irrespective of party or status must be thoroughly screened, scrutinized and brought to book.

‘’Let us look inward into our system of governance, some things are not just right. How can a representative spend half of his entire life in a particular position and still claim sanity. It is absurd to see a single person spending three to four terms in a position and still attached it to normalcy. The question is ‘ Is he the only sane individual in his constituency?’’

He suggested a renewal of strategy to tackle corruption, noting that allowances of political office holders have adverse effect on the country’s economy.

  • Southsouth backs Ambode for second term

THE Chairman of the Southsouth Peoples United Forum, Kosofe Council, Lagos Mr. Dennis Joseph, has commended the state government for its developmental drive.

He urged Lagosians and other non- indigenes to support Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for the second term ambition. He said that the Southsouth would mobilise its people to ensure victory for the governor.

Joseph said Southsouth residents in Lagos are preparing for 2019 election, noting Lagosians, irrespective of background benefitted from the  Ambode administration.

He said: “The position of Southsouth in Lagos is to ensure we contribute our quota to the rapid development of the state by supporting the peace and orderliness presently championed by the Lagos State government.”

“We will ensure we enlighten our people on the need to be law abiding, perform their civil responsibility by voting in coming election. We are thrilled by Ambode’s performance and we will vote for him.”

Joseph said Ambode’s superlative performance should be emulated by other governors, noting that every resident in the state could attest to it.

“The Southsouth people have unrestricted access to unbiased business environment, they have benefitted from the developmental structure of the state. The planning and the conduct of state affairs are perfect.”

“You can agree with me that Lagos State is the fifth largest economy in Africa. This is to support the position that the governor is doing very well.  The road construction is very marvelous and massive.

“The security of lives has been impressive. You will agree with me that when the governor came on board, there were lots of problems, people could not sleep well but the trend has reversed.

“He empowered the law enforcement agents, bought ten armoured tanks, three helicopters, two gunboats, 16 armoured personnel carriers and many security truck vehicles. The moment all these were done the criminals disturbing Lagos relocated”.

According to him, other leaders should learn from the legacy of former Governor Bola Tinubu, stressing that the structure he built has endured.

He added: “What is happening in Lagos is not by accident. The credit goes to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, an excellent builder of men and structure.”

  • Nigerian Breweries backs Okpekpe race

Pioneer and largest brewing firm, Nigerian Breweries Plc has joined the growing list of corporate organisations who have thrown their weight behind the first IAAF silver label road race in West Africa, the Okpekpe international 10km road race.

The spokesman for the race Dare Esan revealed that the company is coming in as a Friend of the Race.

‘It is a massive boost for the image of the race to have a pioneer brewing company support an event in which history will be made on May 12, 2018. Remember the race next month, is the first ever IAAF silver label road race in Nigeria and West Africa.

”In 2015 we became the first road race in Nigeria to be granted an IAAF label status. This means the Okpekpe race is regarded as one of the world’s leading road running events,’ said Esan who explained that a label certifies the global sporting significance of the race, the organisational quality and the compliance with relevant IAAF competition rules.

Nigerian Breweries Plc will support the race with cash and some of their products.

‘Nigerian Breweries have offered a cash support as well as some quantities of its non-alcoholic brand, Amstel Malta for the race. We are delighted to have the first and largest brewing company in Nigeria, a socially responsible corporate organisation with a good track record of corporate social initiatives, back the first IAAF label road race in Nigeria.’

‘Nigerian Breweries is a major player in sports sponsorship and promotion in Nigeria and it is to our credit that a company that supports the Nigerian senior football team, the Super Eagles and the historic Nigerian winter Olympics team is also throwing its weight behind another historic event. This is a testimony to the growing popularity of the Okpekpe race.

It is really heart-warming to have a company that has been very active in supporting the national developmental aspirations of Nigeria identify with a pioneer event as Friend of the race,’ said Esan who also revealed that the theme song for the race will soon be released.

The sixth edition of the Okpekpe international 10km road race will be live on television across the globe, as all arrangements have been concluded with Supersport for a live telecast of the historic race in Okpekpe near Auchi, Edo state of Nigeria.

  • NAL backs call for restructuring

    NAL backs call for restructuring

    •Academy inducts fellows

THE Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL) has lent its voice to the ongoing call for restructuring of the polity, saying the nation inherited unworkable and imbalanced structure from its colonial masters.

At its 19th Convocation, Scientific Session and Investiture held at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), the academy suggested that Nigeria needed to urgently re-assess its power structure to enable sub-national interests to have a voice in running of the nation’s affairs.

The academy urged the National Assembly to revisit devolution of power in the ongoing constitutional review. It said restructuring became symbolic, given the conflicts among ethnic nationalities about identity, resources distribution and sovereignty.

At the event with the theme: “The Patriot and the Nationalist in an Emergent Democracy, presided over by its president, Prof. Olu Obafemi, speakers observed that the agitation for secession by a section of the country was in response to fundamental flaws inherent in the present structure of government.

The lead speaker, Prof. Dele Layiwola, who is a former Director of Institute of African Studies at the University of Ibadan (UI), said there had been a growing interest and strong resolve to dismantle the existing state structure and construct a new one that would be based on equity and justice.

He said Nigeria’s problem was not a lack of ideas, but the lack of political will on the part of its leaders to take decisive actions.

“Our political leaders and representatives in government often betray our collective interest for personal gains. They show open obsession for federalism but in the practice, they bask in unitarism.

“There is a weak sense of national patriotism among the citizens. This is because our wellbeing as a people is observably inadequately protected. Citizens are unable to find security and a sense of belonging. Patriotism suffers in this regard, and there is the resurgence of various degrees of nationalism. We appear to owe more allegiance to our ethnic and linguistic groupings than to the Nigerian nation,” he said.

In his paper delivered during the scientific session, Vice-Chancellor of Kwararafa University in Wukari, Taraba State, Prof. Yakubu Aboki Ochefu, hailed the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, for restoring history as a subject in the curricula of primary and secondary schools after 30 years of its removal.

The speakers urged the government to encourage the teaching of literature in schools, noting that the subject, as a source of illumination and enlightenment, could serve as catalyst for change in the society when put to good use.

The speakers agreed that patriotism and nationalism could not function without genuine education.

In its eight-point recommendations at the end of the event, the academy said the envisioned restructuring of Nigeria should be a blend of federalism that encompasses greater fiscal autonomy, geopolitical zone structures and internal boundaries based on ethnic and sub-ethnic divisions and identities.

The academy urged the Federal Government to revisit the report of the 2014 National Conference and implement relevant recommendations that would resolve fiscal imbalance.

Because of the state of the nation’s economy, the academy called for downward review of salary and allowances paid to legislators.

Sixty one new members, four new regular fellows and one overseas fellow were inducted into the academy.

The regular fellows are: Prof. Unionmwan Edebiri, Prof. Mabel Osakwe, Prof. Siyan Oyeweso, and Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed. The overseas fellow is Prof. Joseph Inikori.

  • Senate backs sanctions against 23,000 ghost workers

Senate backs sanctions against 23,000 ghost workers

The Senate has lent its voice to the call for sanctions against over 23, 000 ghost workers said to have been discovered through the  Bank Verification Number (BVN).

Also for prosecution are civil servants and bank officials found to have aided the scam, adding that those found culpable must face prosecution.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Finance, John Enoh, stated this yesterday during the budget defence session with the Ministry of Finance.

Addressing the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, Enoh urged the ministry to ensure that funds fraudulently received through the scam are recovered.

Mrs. Adeosun said perpetrators of the scam and their collaborators would be punished and that the dragnet would also cover bank officials that aided the theft.

She added that the banks used in perpetrating the fraud would be made to refund the money.

The minister said the ghost workers were discovered through the adoption of the Personnel Payroll Information System and Bank Verification Number platforms.

Adeosun said:  “What the IPPIS-BVN registration has shown us has been a revelation, we have identified that there are people who appear on our payroll multiple times.

“BVN links all accounts of that person, so we are seeing in our payroll, 20 names to one BVN number.

“We have had a meeting on how we are going to clean them off, the process will be that we will suspend that person from the payroll pending the investigation.

“We will try as much as possible to conclude that investigation within 30 days so that we do not suffer innocent people, but we need to clean our payroll.

“We have about 23,000 that we need to investigate: those whom either the BVN is linked to multiple payment or the name on the BVN account is not consistent with the name on our payroll.

“Not only will we remove those people from our payroll, but we will also be going after the banks involved to collect our money.

“So some of the information that we are getting is how long has this person been on the pay roll, how much has he been getting. In some getting the accounts are held by the same bank and in some cases all were opened on the same day”.

She hinted that the ministry would have registered the entire federal workforce on the BVN platform by the end of June.

According to her, the removal of the ghost workers from the government’s pay roll would reduce personnel cost by over N100 billion.

She added that the removal of fake workers will reduce the personnel burden on the Federal Government, hence the reduction of personnel cost in 2016 by about N100 billion.

    NFF backs Enyeama against Oliseh

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has backed goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama to remain in the Super Eagles camp after the row with Coach Sunday Oliseh.

Oliseh, who was physically angry over the late arrival of goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama to the team’s camp in Belgium, asked the player to shut up and be thrown out of camp by security operatives.

Nigeria will play two international friendlies against Congo DR today and Cameroon on Sunday in Belgium.

A bereaved Enyeama was in Nigeria last weekend to bury his late mother, who’s death saw the Eagles captain miss Nigeria’s last two games against Tanzania and Niger. That development did not go down well with Oliseh who did not show remorse over the Lille shot-stopper’s sad condition at the time.

Oliseh told the media in September that the goalkeeper opted out of the Super Eagles ahead of their trip to Tanzania without an excuse.

Enyeama arrived Belgium late on Monday to meet an angry Oliseh who ordered him out of the team’s Hotel Verviers camp, and subsequently named Ahmed Musa as captain for the two friendly games.

But the NFF would douse the tension as they waded into the matter.

“It’s true that there was a little misunderstanding in the camp of @NGSuperEagles, but the matter has been resolved. Enyeama remains in camp,” the NFF said on Twitter.

With the latest development, Nigerians wait to see who stands in between the sticks for the Super Eagles two friendlies, as well as who captains the side.

Enyeama is Nigeria’s longest serving player with 101 appearances for the Super Eagles.

  • Amos Adamu backs Orji Kalu

    Amos Adamu backs Orji Kalu

Support has continued to pour in for the FIFA presidency bid of former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu.

Speaking  yesterday, former FIFA  and CAF executive committee  member,  Amos Adamu said: ” Orji Uzor Kalu is  eminently  qualified to lead  world’s football governing  body  FIFA. I have absolute confidence and believe that he would do well as head of FIFA. Once the position is vacant Orji Kalu should run for the top post.

A man  that led Enyimba to win the CAF Champion’s league twice cannot be ignored in world football. A man who was a governor twice and a  successful  businessman must  be supported to  run  the  affairs of FIFA. If we sell his candidacy well who says he cannot win?,”  Adamu affirmed.

“We are trying to convince him to run so that he can bring his wealth of experience to bear on the game  of  football. Each confederation have their needs, so we  should ensure that he gets the mandate of the other bodies so that those needs can  be  met. We should ensure  that  players  have a place in his  administration  because he  has  shown enough capacity  for their welfare.”

Adamu said he was consulting widely to ensure that Kalu gets the mandate.

“I’m using my contacts to sell his candidacy to the public and some people who may not know him. Nigeria is a giant in football compared to countries like Jordan. Prince Ali should go and develop football in his country. If we are talking of a people with football pedigree  we are over qualified. We are consulting and getting very positive  responses. It will be a pride of Africa if Orji Uzor  Kalu wins the bid. It’s time for Africa to rule FIFA,” Adamu  said.

Notable ex-players  like John Fashanu  and Peterside Idah have  been  at  the  forefront of the Kalu  for   FIFA presidency bid.

  • Senate presidency: Southeast group backs Lawan

Senate presidency: Southeast group backs Lawan

Citing consistency in character, capacity and competence, a group, the Southeast Chapter of National Coalition for Good Governance, has pleaded with senators-elect to “unanimously” elect Ahmad Ibrahin Lawan as Senate president.

The group described Lawan as a man of consistency, good character and competence. In a press statement released in Abuja at the end of a post-general elections forum said, the nation would require a stable, visionary and purposeful National Assembly, which “the Senate presidency of Senator Ahmed Lawan will guarantee”

In an apparent analysis of all contenders for the post, the group declared: “Having scored so high in the areas of consistency, character and competence, we therefore strongly appeal to the APC and the senators-elect to please do the needful for the sake of posterity by electing unanimously, distinguished Senator Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan as the president of Senate”

The group, in the statement signed by its Southeast Coordinator, Eze Odiri, said Lawan had exhibited consistency in many areas, especially in party membership, stressing that he “has consistently been a member of ANPP until it merged with other parties to form APC”

“Consistency in political party affiliations points to character and dependability, which are critical to the person who will occupy the office of the President of Senate” stressing that “this means that the person has no excess luggage or encumbrance which can bring a smear on the office and institution”.

It added that “Since the return to democratic governance in 1999, he has consistently been in the National Assembly, viz House of Reps 1999-2003, 2003-2007; Senate 2007-2011, 2011-2015, and 2015-2019”, listing his various committee membership as including “ Chairman, House of Reps on Agriculture-2003-2005; Chairman, House of Reps Committee on Education-2005-2007 and Chairman, Senate Committee on Public Accounts-2007-2015”

While stressing that Lawan’s “academic consistency also speaks volumes”, the statement said.

Senator Lawan, who holds BSc in Geography, Msc in Remote Sensing and PHD in Remote Sensing/GIS, “is among the few politicians who despite his consistency has no dent”.

“This outstanding attribute qualifies him for the Office of the President of Senate/Chairman of National Assembly in a regime that has promised to fight corruption”, it noted, adding that “his consistency and character has been brought to bear in the outstanding manner he has managed all the committees he has chaired since entering the National Assembly”

The group urged the senators-elect to recognise the fact that Senator Lawan’s chairmanship of Committees on Agriculture, Education and Public Accounts and membership of other Committees for a consistent period of 16 years in the National Assembly has exposed him to critical issues in National Development and good governance.
