The residents noted that the exercise, apart from bringing about a cleaner environment in their various localities, has brought about an improved sanitation in the health conditions of citizens in the local government area.

Most of the residents who visited the Health and Environmental Department of the council to request for additional refuse bags expressed satisfaction at the exercise and promised the local government of their readiness towards sustaining the success recorded by the council in refuse disposal.

Chief Tajudeen Dosa, the Wawu of Badagry, enjoined the people of the local government area to cooperate with Hon Onilude and his team at ensuring cleaner environment.

“l have to commend the pro-activeness of the chairman for his efforts at carting away heaps of refuse which had almost become an eyesore in some areas in Badagry. No doubt, this exercise has brought about a healthy change in the air we breathe in the council area in the last one week.

  • Chieftaincy tussle: Family petitions Ambode

The Opesha family in Mowo area of Lagos State has appealed to Governor Akinwumi Ambod to intervene in the Mowo chieftaincy tussle by installing Chief Peter Idowu Ajayi as the Baale of Mowo Town in Olorunda Local Council Development Area, Badagry Local Government.

A letter from their solicitors, Adetunji Orisalade & Co Chambers, the Opesha Family explained that the current dispute over Mowo Chieftaincy Stool was instigated by His Royal Highness (HRH), Oniberekodo of Iberekodo, Oba Adewale Okoya and his cohorts, who installed Philip Ajose as “Acting Baale” of Mowo Town.

According to the letter dated November 22, 2017, the move by Oba Okoya was entirely opposed to and in defiance of an existing, almost concluded, process of installing Chief Ajayi by Olorunda Local Council Development Area.

It further explained that the installation of Ajayi, backed by Opesha, Shadare, Shakoto and Desere ruling houses in Mowo, was supported by a judgment by a Justice of the Lagos State High Court, Hon. Justice H.A.O. Abiru (as he then was) which, in an earlier judgment that favoured the Opesha Families to the effect that Opesha Family was ordered to produce the next Baale of Mowo land.

The letter entitled “Re: Continuing Unlawful and Unwarranted Tampering with the Baale of Mowo Stool by HRH Oba Adewale Okoya (Onibereko of Ibereko) and His Cohorts” explained that either Oba Okoya, or his predecessors lacked powers of consent for the installation of Baale of Mowo, as Ibereko upon which he (Oba Okoya) rules and Mowo were two separate, distinct and exclusive towns.

Pleading for the intervention of Governor Ambode in correcting the wrong foisted by Oba Okoya, they noted that Philip Ajose, a beneficiary of flawed installation, has been parading himself as “Baale of Opesha”, a situation which they noted had created needless tension in Mowo.

The letter to the governor was accompanied by attachments that included a copy of the said judgment of Justice Abiru, another letter personally signed by the Akran of Badagry, His Majesty, De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi 1 dated November 17, 2016, consenting to Ajayi’s installation, and another letter from Olorunda Local Council Development Area recognising Ajayi as the next occupant of the Baaleship title.

It reads in part: “That whilst the process of approving the Baaleship of Chief Peter Idowu Ajayi was ongoing, HRM Oba Adewale Okoya (Oniberekodo of Iberekodo) illegally, unlawfully and unscrupulously installed one Philip Ajose (who is not a member of Opesha Family) as a so-called “Acting Baale”.

“That from all historical, cultural, and traditional accounts, Mowo Town is separate and distinct from Ibereko Town where he is the Oba and has no historical or cultural tie with each other, but HRH Oba Adewale Okoya (Onibereko of Ibereko) has been poke-nosing into the affairs of the Baaleship of Mowo, thereby causing unnecessary tensions for selfish and unfathomable reasons.”

Reacting to the allegation during a telephone interview with our correspondent, Oba Okoya clarified that the person installed as Baale of Mowo Town was Kola Talabi and not Philip Ajose, as stated in the petition to the governor.

The monarch maintained that due processes were followed in Talabi’s installation, adding that a High Court judgment had already favoured his choice.

According to him, Talabi’s name had been sent to and endorsed by Olorunda Local Government Area before same was forwarded to the Obas Council in Lagos State which had equally given its blessing.

His words: “Their opposition to the installation of Talabi lacks basis. Talabi’s choice followed due process, beginning from the local government up to the Council of Obas.

“They are right to fight because this is a chieftaincy matter which everyone desires to occupy, but the High Court had stopped the Ajayi camp two years ago when it nullified its bid in a ruling.

On the argument that he was wrong to have installed a Baale for Mowo Town, as he lacked the authority, Oba Okoya noted that he only lent his weight to the favourable judgment of the High Court, and Chief Philip’s endorsement by Olorunda Local Government Area.
