Bafarawa dispels APC defection rumours, says he remains elder statesman

Former Sokoto State Governor and one-time presidential candidate, Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, has dismissed reports suggesting that he has joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that he has retired from active partisan politics and now operates strictly as an elder statesman.

Bafarawa, who had last year publicly renounced membership of any political party, said he was reacting to rumours circulating across news and social media platforms claiming that he had defected to the APC.

Speaking in Sokoto on Wednesday night, the former governor said he had made his position clear since leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“Since quitting the PDP, I announced my retirement from active politics and distanced myself from taking any political appointment,” he said.

Bafarawa, who holds the traditional title of Garkuwan Sokoto (Shield of Sokoto), explained that his current role is limited to offering advice and opinions on issues affecting the unity and prosperity of the country.

“I am now an elder statesman who only gives and airs opinions on issues that border on the country’s prosperity,” he stated.

He clarified that while he has thousands of supporters across Sokoto State with political ambitions, he has consistently told them that he is no longer involved in active politics.

“They sought to know where my focus is, and I told them clearly that I am no longer in active politics. When they insisted and, based on their own convictions, decided to join the APC, I told them that wherever they choose to be politically, I would always wish them well,” Bafarawa explained.

The former governor added that he supports their decision and stressed that he would not oppose Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State, citing the governor’s loyalty and respect toward him.

“I am willing and ready to support their choice and will be the last person in the state to oppose Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto for his loyalty to and respect for me as a father,” he said.

Bafarawa further noted that he would continue to protect his fatherly relationship with the governor while supporting the political decisions of his followers.

Reflecting on his political journey, he recalled his role in mentoring several leaders who later became governors of Sokoto State, including Yahaya Abdulkareem, Aliyu Wamakko, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, and the incumbent, Ahmed Aliyu.

“At one time, I was a founding member and chairman of the ANPP, which gave Muhammadu Buhari the presidential ticket in 2003. I chaired the constitution drafting committee of the APC, mentored and supported Tambuwal to become Speaker of the House of Representatives, and brought Wamakko into political limelight, among others,” he said.

“What else do I need again than to thank God and await my last destination in paradise by Allah’s wish? Therefore, I remain an elder statesman whose principles believe in the unity and prosperity of Nigeria,” Bafarawa added.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Bafarawa Akida Movement in Sokoto State, Professor Muhammad Hamza Maishanu Yabo, said loyalists of the former governor had collectively decided to join the APC in support of Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s administration.

He said the decision followed extensive consultations among elders, youths and women loyal to Bafarawa, who view the governor as a true democrat.

“This decision was taken because of Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s resilience in delivering dividends of democracy to the people of Sokoto and the dignity and humility with which he treats our principal,” Yabo said.

According to him, the supporters resolved to back the state government, noting that Bafarawa himself was a key co-founder of the APC and that his followers were acting in line with that legacy.

According to him, he had not granted any media interview or in consulting with any group on the issue.

He enjoined journalists to refrain from circulating false reports

The former presidential candidate last year announced aligning himself with a grassroots development group after he excused himself from active partisan politics.

“Ramadan is a month of fasting, gratitude to Allah for His blessings, and a time for the wealthy to support the less fortunate in society. It is a season for sharing food, not spreading rumors,” the former Governor was quoted as saying by his media.

Bafarawa to Nigerians: support govt against insurgency

Former Sokoto State governor Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa has urged Nigerians to brace against the security challenges bedevilling the country and stop blaming the President, governors and others at the top hierarchy of governance.

Bafarawa, who spoke to reporters in Sokoto, said: “Blame game is not the solution. We need to work together for leaders to also carry out their responsibilities to succeed.’’

According to him, President Bola Tinubu or the governors cannot do anything without the support of Nigerians.

“We need to be guided by our conscience and see why everyone must play his or her role towards the fight against insecurity.

He said the insecurity issues were local and all must work towards salvaging the country to attain its vision as a nation.

Sokoto former Accountant General carpets Bafarawa’s N13bn handover claim

Aminu Abdullahi, former Accountant General of Sokoto State, has dismissed claim by former Governor Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa of leaving behind N13 billion in 2007.

Bafarawa on Wednesday revisited the issue while delivering speech at the inauguration of the Bafarawa Foundation where he announced the disbursement of N1bn to support indigents in the State.

The former Governor begged for forgiveness  noting he may have by omission or commission acted against public interest during his tenure.

But Abdullahi described Bafarawa’s claim as not only mischievous but also a scheme to play with the intelligence of Sokoto people.

“He was geared to whipping sentiment for cheap political gains,” he stressed.

Abdullahi disclosed that Bafarawa’s successor, Aliyu Wamakko inherited only unfinished projects, not N13 billion.

” The agency even confiscated some of his assets in 2010,” Abdullahi said pointing out that the State Government set up an investigative panel led by Alhaji Namadina Abdulrahman to trace where the N13 billion was lodged and nothing was found .

“Instead, we worked to improve the lot of the people of Sokoto state leaving behind legacies that are still visible across the State,” the firmer Accountant General explained.

  • Ayade, Tambuwal, Mark, Jang, Bafarawa congratulate Atiku

CONGRATULATORY messages yesterday continued to trail Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s emergence as the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade, Sokoto State Governor and PDP presidential aspirant Aminu Tambuwal, former Senate President David Mark, former Plateau State Governor Senator Jonah Jang and ex-Sokoto State Governor Attahiru Bafarawa were among those who congratulated Atiku on his victory.

They promised to support the PDP candidate before and in the presidential election.

Ayade, in his message, described former vice president’s victory at the just concluded PDP convention held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as well-deserved.

In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary and Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Christian Ita, Ayade said Atiku’s victory at the convention was a reflection of the wishes of PDP members.

“On behalf of the government and the good people of Cross River State, I want to heartily congratulate you on your victory at our party’s presidential primary. The trust placed in you to fly the flag of our great party in the 2019 elections is undoubtedly a springboard of great inspiration and motivation to bring your vast private and public experience in ensuring the well-being and unity of our great country and its people,” Ayade said.

Mark, in his statement, said throughout his campaigns, he maintained that the PDP presidential aspirants, including Atiku Abubakar, were eminently qualified to provide excellent leadership for the nation and that as a faithful and steadfast party man, he would support anyone of them who emerged the flag bearer of the PDP.

He restated his commitment and pledged support for Atiku  to bring victory to the party in 2019.

In his statement, Tambuwal said: “On behalf of my humble self, my family, and millions of my supporters from across the length and breadth of the country, I heartily rejoice with and congratulate your excellency on your emergence as the standard flagbearer of our great political party, the PDP at the just concluded National Convention held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

“The task at hand, going forward, is to ensure victory at the polls in order to save our fatherland from the current regime of annihilation bestriding it.

“This calls for unity of purpose that admits of no division, no distractions and no internal wrangling. I commit myself to this task and urge all members of our great party to roll up their sleeves and set to work as members of one united family.”

Jang said in spite of the outcome of the PDP presidential primaries in Port Harcourt, in which he lost, he would support Atiku.

  • 2019: Buhari will be easy to defeat, Bafarawa

Former governor of Sokoto State and PDP presidential aspirant, Attahiru Bafarawa, has declared defeating APC- led administration of President Muhammadu Buhari will be an easy task if all the aspirants join hands with the party.

Bafarawa spoke on Friday in Kano while interacting with PDP state delegates.

He frowned at political bickering and attacks among PDP elders, saying it would affect the party if not addressed.

“There is no reason whatsoever to see some certain party elders fighting each other through media. Such can destabilise our collective unity and chances to defeat ruling APC.

“All such noise and threat among party leaders across board are meant to create disunity by some of whom are not happy with our current success in the country,” Bafarawa said.

He assured nothing will stop him from defeating other aspirants in the forthcoming national convention of the party.

He claimed he had the needed requisites to lead the party to success in the 2019 presidential election.

“I am not afraid. I will never see any of the aspirants as a threat to get our party ticket. I will surely defeat them and secure the mandate.

Kano state PDP chairman, Senator Mas’ud Doguwa assured Bafarawa of total support and endorsement of PDP Kano to realise his ambition of flying the party’s flag.

He said PDP Kano state belongs to genuine party supporters, not any individual adding that no one can intimidate or frighten them to succumb easily on issues in the state.

  • PDP screens Atiku, Turaki, Tambuwal, Saraki, Lamido, Bafarawa, others

    •Aspirants uncomfortable with Port Harcourt
•Two aspirants present no educational certificates

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday screened most of its presidential aspirants. There was drama over the fate of two.

The two could not present evidence of their educational certificates before the panel.

The development led to a little disagreement between the screening committee chairman, former Vice President Namadi Sambo and other members.

Some members wanted instant disqualification of the two (who are from the Northwest), Sambo exercised caution with a caveat that the party will know how best to handle those without educational certificates.

Also yesterday, most of the aspirants were uncomfortable with the choice of Port Harcourt for the National Convention, following alleged undue interest of Governor Nyesom Wike in one of them.

Those who appeared before the committee are: ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar; a former National Chairman of PDP, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi; former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki; Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal; Senate President Bukola Saraki; former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido and former Sokoto State Governor Attahiru Bafarawa.

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Gombe State Governor Ibrahim Dakwambo were yet to be screened as at press time.

A top source, who spoke in confidence, said: “The screening committee headed by Sambo, with the Governor of Akwa Ibom, Udom Emmanuel as Secretary, interacted with most of the aspirants.

“They were basically asked questions on their educational qualifications, background, their professional callings, party membership, records of conviction by a court of law, and why they are in the presidential race.

“All these questions border on the requirements for the Office of the President as enshrined in 1999 Constitution.

“It was indeed revealing sessions with some of the aspirants who are more than qualified for the Office of the President.”

But the source admitted that two of the aspirants did not measure up to expectations.

The source added: “These two aspirants could not present their educational certificates to the Sambo panel.

“Their deficiencies caused a little disagreement at the committee level. Some members of the screening committee wanted the affected aspirants from the Northwest disqualified, but Sambo called for caution and wanted their fate left to the PDP to decide.

“At the end of the day, the committee will submit a comprehensive report to the National Secretariat of PDP to consider.”

A spokesman of one of the aspirants, who spoke in confidence, confirmed the screening of some of the aspirants.

The spokesman said: “Yes, our candidate appeared before the screening committee. It is part of the due process being followed by the party. It is only those who are no longer interested in the race that might not show up for the screening.”

Some of the aspirants protested over the choice of Port Harcourt as the venue of the National Convention of PDP.

One of the aspirants had barely arrived for the screening when he told his colleagues as follows: “I have been warning all of you, the choice of Port Harcourt is not ideal. Governor Nyesom Wike will take total control and he will crown whoever he likes. It is becoming obvious now.”

Another presidential aspirant said: “The truth is that many of us are uncomfortable with Port Harcourt at all. The ticket would have been decided and conceded to Wike’s favourite before we get to the venue.

“Some of us have protested to PDP leaders against the venue which will not guarantee a level-playing field.”

  • 2019: We’ll support whoever emerges PDP candidate, says Bafarawa

PRESIDENTIAL aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may have resolved to back whoever clinched the  ticket amongst them at party’s National Convention slated for Port Harcourt, Rivers State, one of the aspirants, Attahiru Bafarawa, has said.

The former Sokoto governor said the aspirants were resolute in their resolve to unseat the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration. He spoke in Bauchi.

He told reporters yesterday: “Two aspirants come from Sokoto my home state, the present Governor, Aminu Tambuwal and me, Attahiru Bafarawa.

“That is not a problem at all because we the aspirants pledged that whoever emerged the candidate, we will all support him as our presidential candidate.”

Bafarawa said what the aspirants wanted was to “rescue Nigeria from All Progressives Congress (APC).

“I am a democrat and therefore ready to support any aspirant who emerges as the party’s flag-bearer in order to move the country forward.

“We all, however, need to be screened before the final decision on the party’s candidate is taken. I am not into politics to make money but to serve and I remain the best among the aspirants with 8 years’ experience as Governor of Sokoto State.”

  • Bafarawa and PDP presidential crowd

Since three years or so, Nigerians have known no peace, following the way and manner things are going in the country. The present administration under the watch of President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is not helping issues. It has rather compounded the situation by exhibiting a high sense of incompetence and insensitivity. It I as if the president and his lieutenants are not prepared to lead the country, as they have little or nothing to show as their achievements since the inception of the administration some three years ago.

The economic weather in the country is not only harsh, but also scorching. It is quite regrettable, considering the fact that the immediate past administration under Dr. Goodluck Jonathan did well in the management of the nation’s economy.

In the area of security, I can say that Nigeria is not making any head-way. Nigeria is now a country where people armed with sophisticated weaponry, including AK-47s, rocket launchers, dynamites and machetes, operate with little or no harassment by the security operatives. Available statistics shows that over 50,000 innocent Nigerians have been killed by Boko Haram and herdsmen since 2011.

However, it is important to note that the present administration has not done much to address the problem of security in the country. This may be seen as why the herdsmen operate the way they like, terrorizing and killing people unnecessarily.

The United States Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), in its recent report, said that it had documented at least 19, 840 deaths in Nigeria, since 2015, just after President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office.   The United Kingdom-based Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) documented 1061 deaths in 106 attacks by the militia on communities in Adamawa, Benue, Plateau and Taraba states, with an additional 17 lives lost during the first quarter of 2018. CSW also documented seven instances of violence targeting herders or communities in which 61 people lost their lives”.

The point here is that virtually every sector of the economy is bad, meaning that there is a big problem in the country.

The question now is, who, among the array of presidential aspirants in the PDP and other political parties in Nigeria, has the capacity to lead the country out of the present predicament if given the opportunity to serve as president in 2019? This and related questions are seriously begging for attention, as the 2019 general elections draw closer.

Actually, there are many people jostling for the office of the president. Some are serious, while others are contesting for the sake of it. As citizens, they may like to exercise their constitutional rights, thereby making the game very interesting to watch. That is the beauty of democracy. But the concern of Nigerians now is not the number of people who have indicated their interests to run for the position, rather their antecedents and political credentials. Hence, what Nigerians want to know is the stuff they are made of before supporting any of them. It is a fact because the electorates are desirous of electing somebody who knows the game, as president. They are of the view that only a credible person who is familiar with the trend can effect positive change.

To achieve this objective, some political pundits in the country have painstakingly assessed all the presidential aspirants, including those in the PDP.  This is where the former governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, running under the PDP stands out because of his track record, intimidating political credentials and experience in the field of politics.

Bafarawa, by the way, is one of the most experienced and oldest politicians in Nigeria, having joined politics in his early 20s, precisely in 1976. And it is worthy of note that he has been in politics from that time till date. His consistency, no doubt, makes him more popular than his contemporaries.

Amanze Obi, in a piece titled “A professional in the Saddle”, published in the Daily Sun of Thursday, August 16, under his “Broken Tongues” column captured it all: “A casual encounter with him will readily tell the story. His journey into the murky terrain of politics dates back to 1976, when he contested and won election as councilor. Upon assumption of office, he was made a supervisory councilor, a position that elevated him among his pack. Bafarawa was in his early 20s at the time. Since then, the man has remained in politics, traversing the political landscape with assured steps. He has contested election to the National Assembly. He has midwifed the formation of political parties, notably the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) and Democratic People’s Party (DPP). He has been party chairman at state and National levels. He contested and won election as a delegate to the National Constitution Conference of 1994 to 1995. He has been governor”.

With these credentials, one can simply testify that Bafarawa is grounded in Nigerian politics, that he has acquired much knowledge in the political sector. This is why he sees himself as a professional politician.

Amanze Obi would further note that “Bafarawa’s selling point is not his past romance with the highest office in the land. What goads him on is his long standing involvement in politics. The former governor prides himself on being a professional politician. He savours his wide spectrum of experience in politics, a quality that many politicians in Nigeria are bereft of. For Bafarawa, one of the reasons why many who delved into politics and governance in Nigeria fail is because they are not professional politicians. He readily reminds us that our politics is peopled by gatecrashers who, ordinarily, should not be in politics. Being not grounded in the science and art of politics, many who cross over from other professions such as the military, bookkeeping, farming, teaching, and the like get lost in the mix. The result is the amateurish politics that usually results in bad governance. If you ask Bafarawa, he will tell you that politics should be left for professional politicians like him”.

Nigeria needs an experienced person who can listen to the yearnings of the masses; somebody who has the capacity to transform the economic and security situation of the country, as well as other sectors that are beginning for attention, and somebody who can measure well in the provision of infrastructural facilities.  Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa is that aspirant that can give Nigeria what it needs in terms of governance. He stands tall among all the PDP presidential aspirants. He ranks first when it comes to political experience and administration. His landmark achievements as governor of Sokoto State from 1999 to 2007, is a clear demonstration of this. He will definitely replicate what he did in Sokoto State in the entire country if given the opportunity to serve as president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria come 2019. He aims at taking Nigeria to another level by redefining the political, social and economic landscape of the country. He wants to save Nigeria from the hands of mediocres and non-political do-gooders.
