Niger-South stakeholders back Gov Bago’s security measures

The Niger-South Senior Stakeholders’ Forum (NSSF) has expressed full support for Niger Governor, Hon. Muhammad Umaru Bago, efforts to ensure adequate security of lives and properties in the state.

The Forum, at its inaugural Executive Committee meeting, held on Monday, recommended Governor Bago for taking decisive action to restore peace and order in the state’s capital, Minna.

The meeting was held under the leadership of the Forum’s Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Liman, (Wazirin Baro/Zannan Agaie).

The Forum in a statement on Monday by its Secretary General, Dr. Mohammed Santuraki (Santurakin Nupe), said “The NSSF notes that Minna, once a city of peace and harmony, had been plagued by fear due to the activities of street thugs and miscreants. We therefore hail Governor Bago for taking enhanced security measures with the aim of improving public order and safety.”

The Forum urged the youth to refrain from social vices and to serve as good ambassadors of the state.

“We also advocate for collaboration among all stakeholders, including parents and community leaders, to support the Niger State government’s efforts in addressing these pressing issues,” Santuraki stated.

The NSSF also expressed its commitment to working with both the Federal and State Governments and non-governmental organizations to actualize critical projects and programmes in the Zone and Niger State at large.

“Very soon, the Forum would unveil plans for constructive engagements with both the Federal and State Governments and non-governmental organizations regarding the actualization of some of the critical projects and programmes in our Zone and Niger State at large,” Santuraki said.

The Forum reaffirmed its commitment to fostering unity and collaboration among leaders and stakeholders of Niger-South Senatorial District, to advance and safeguard the political and developmental interests of the people and the zone.

  • Bago’s security absurdities

    Bago’s security absurdities

This account attributed to Wisdom Jonathan, a photographer who had travelled to Niger State for business purposes, demonstrates the negative effect of the state government’s ill-considered security measures.

“When we were coming into Minna, we were stopped at the police checkpoint around Pogo and they told the other two men I was with to remove their caps; they did,” Jonathan narrated to journalists. “One had punk and the other one had dreadlocks. They said they will have to cut their hair as it is now the law. I went to them and told them that we were coming to work in Minna and not living in Minna.”

He said the policemen insisted that they must cut their hair “as they were under the order to cut dreadlocks or unruly hair.” At some point, he said, “they brought out a fan belt and started hitting me with it, saying I was trying to stop them from doing their job. I was trying to be careful to ensure that the men I brought with me for the work returned safely.”

He continued: “They took my colleagues to the bush and told them that they had to pay a fine of N2,000. They gave them their Opay account and one of the men transferred N2,000 to the officer and the other man gave N2,000 cash.”

This incident allegedly happened in the aftermath of security measures unveiled by Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago at a recent high-level security meeting with traditional rulers and security agencies at the Government House, Minna.   The governor had said “Angwa Daji and Barki Sale areas should be placed on serious security watch.”

Reports said the governor had condemned the wearing of dreadlocks, saying, “We will have zero tolerance for rascality. Anybody that you find with dreadlocks, arrest, cut the hair, and fine him. Nobody should carry any kind of haircut inside Minna. I have given marching orders to security agencies.”

Predictably, Bago’s reported remarks had triggered public outrage, with critics attacking the apparent criminalisation of dreadlocks.  For a governor to publicly condemn a hairstyle is an overreach of their authority and sends a negative message about tolerance, diversity, and individual rights within the state. How someone chooses to wear their hair is generally considered a matter of personal expression and identity.

Such an official condemnation reinforces negative stereotypes and prejudices associated with dreadlocks, and can encourage discrimination against individuals who wear them. Individuals who wear dreadlocks are not necessarily a danger to society.

Following the negative public reaction, Bago claimed that “people misconstrued our words for people who have dreadlocks,” blaming it on “media propaganda.”  He said the target of the policy was “that cult that is becoming a menace in Niger State.” He explained: We don’t have a problem with dreadlocks, but we have a problem with the cult here with dreadlocks. So, if you have dreadlocks and you have business, please come to Niger State.”

The governor missed the point. Targeting individuals with dreadlocks for forced haircuts and fines is unlawful. It does not matter if they are cultists. Jonathan and his partners, despite being in the state for business, were not exempt from this treatment, according to their reported experience.

The police spokesperson in the state was reported saying they “will verify, investigate and ascertain the personnel involved for further necessary action.”

Also, the Niger State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Binta Mamman, explained that the government’s policy “is not a blanket criminalisation of hairstyles, but a preventive measure informed by intelligence and ongoing trends. The aim is to dismantle the formation and spread of these emerging groups before they become deeply rooted in the state.”

According to her, “The government has observed a disturbing trend among some youth groups with a distinct hairstyle that appears to be evolving into a form of group identity or cultism. The defaulters that will be arrested are those who wear certain dreadlocks in front while the back of their heads is shaved. The security agencies know them because they walk in droves.”

It is disturbing that the clarifications by the governor and the commissioner indicate that the state government’s policy on dreadlocks is still in effect. It is puzzling that they don’t seem to realise that such a policy is unlawful.

It is commendable that Governor Bago wants to tackle insecurity in his state. However, some of his ideas, including the one on dreadlocks, are questionable. He also introduced other measures that failed the rationality test.

For instance, he said “Anyone found in possession of any weapon, including knives and sticks, should be treated as an armed robber and if killed, the parents must pay for the bullet before releasing the corpse.”  Possession of knives and sticks should not make someone an armed robbery suspect. And killing them without arrest and trial should not be the response.

He also said “Anyone going to seek bail for thugs from a police station should also be arrested. Any Mai-Angwa, Hakimi or Village Heads harbouring thugs should be dethroned and arrested.”  Why should anyone trying to bail a thug be arrested? Does this mean that thugs cannot be bailed? Is that lawful?

He declared that “Anyone’s house found within Minna selling any kind of illicit drugs should be demolished and occupants arrested.”  What if the house owner is innocent? If the occupants of a house are suspected drug dealers, how does demolishing the house which does not belong to them amount to justice?

It is concerning that these measures are not clear on lawful processes. The governor failed to emphasise the role of law enforcement agents in punishing crime. He seemed to encourage non-state actors to punish crime. That is a dangerous approach to fighting crime.

The lessons include the need for thoughtful and lawful security measures. It is counter-productive to fight crime with unlawful policies.  Bago should rethink his ideas on tackling insecurity in the state. He can do so without unproductive drama and sensational moves.

Bago pledges to strengthen efforts in making Niger state Nigeria’s food hub

Niger State Governor, Umaru Mohammed Bago, has reaffirmed his commitment to revitalizing agriculture, emphasizing its role in making Niger State a key contributor to Nigeria’s food security.

Speaking after receiving The Sun Newspaper’s Governor of the Year in Agriculture Award, Bago called on governments, investors, policymakers, and citizens to prioritize agriculture.

He stressed that Nigeria must not only achieve self-sufficiency in food production but also become a global player in agricultural exports.

Dedicating the award to all Nigerian farmers, the governor said the recognition serves as motivation to intensify efforts in food production. He encouraged citizens to maximize available spaces—including backyards and sacks—for livestock and crop farming.

The award was presented on Saturday at the Expo Convention Centre, Eko Hotels & Suites, Lagos, where Bago was honored alongside other distinguished recipients.

Expressing gratitude to the award organizers, he reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to transforming Niger State into the nation’s food hub through mechanized farming, irrigation projects, and support for rural farmers.

Bago urged Nigerians to embrace agriculture, describing it as the key to food sufficiency, job creation, and long-term economic prosperity.

“No matter how little your space is, you can grow something. You don’t need vast farmlands to contribute to the nation’s food supply. A simple vegetable garden, a few crops in sacks, or even greenhouses can make a difference,” he said.

Bago reiterated his belief that agriculture is the new crude oil, emphasizing that reliance on oil revenue is unsustainable while he pointed out that Nigeria’s vast arable land should be harnessed for large-scale food production, agro-processing, and export, which will reduce dependence on food imports and strengthen the nation’s economy.

“With the right policies, investments, and the collective efforts of all Nigerians, we can turn our agricultural sector into a powerhouse that drives economic transformation and positions Nigeria as a leader in global food production,” he said.

Bago is a model for other governors, says Kwankwaso

Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has described the Niger state governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, as a model worthy of emulation by other governors across the country.

He said that two years down the line, Bago has performed excellently above other governors across Nigeria.

Speaking at the 60th birthday celebration of Bishop Idahosa Isaac Odiri, the vice presidential candidate of the NNPP, which took place in Lagos over the weekend, Kwankwaso praised Governor Bago’s leadership style and commitment to development, particularly in the areas of agriculture, youth empowerment and education.

“Two years down the line, I can confidently say that Governor Bago has scored excellently so far. I call on all governors across the country to emulate what he is doing. Those who have the opportunity to govern now and in the future must strive to do their best, change the narrative, and improve the lives of their people”, he said.

He stated that the governor’s recent initiative to sponsor young people abroad for science-related courses is commendable, adding that it is a step in the right direction.

Kwankwaso urged Bago to continue investing in young people saying they are the real investment as they transcend material wealth.

“If you continue this way, doing well and investing in young people, they will appreciate you in the future,” he said.

He added that Bago does not have to be a member of his party to acknowledge the good work he is doing.

“You don’t have to be a member of my party for me to acknowledge your good work. Stay in your party, but I will say it when you are doing well and when you are doing exceptionally well.”

Kwankwaso further stated that Bago had invited him, before he was sworn into office, to share insights on the successes of his administration in Kano State, particularly in education, agriculture, and infrastructure, so he could listen and learn from his experiences.

Kwankwaso also addressed the misconception that leadership is about wealth accumulation.

“Many believe accumulating wealth is everything, but that is not the case. What truly matters is the impact a leader makes, and I can categorically say that Governor Bago is making a significant difference with the achievements he has recorded within a short period.”

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, in his address, enjoined all Nigerians to be tolerant of each other, irrespective of religious differences.

Bago, who was the chairman of the occasion, noted how some people have allowed religion to bring division into society, pointing out that there is no compulsion in religion.

The governor prayed for many more years, good health and vitality for the celebrant.

The celebrant, Archbishop Designate Isaac Idahosa who was full of excitement, expressed gratitude to God for the gift of life, saying that he is the product of God’s grace and mercy because he has passed through many challenges in life, but God has been faithful, hence, he is grateful to God and humanity.

Speaking to Nigerians, the celebrant called on them to be hopeful as it takes time for anything good to come and that Nigerians need to be patient and supportive of the current leadership while praying for their success.

Bago’s wife calls for action against s3xual violence

The wife of Niger Governor, Hajiya Fatima Mohammed Bago, has called for urgent and practical action to combat sexual violence, declaring the determination of the Bago-led government to break the cycle of abuse and silence in the state.

She emphasised the need to protect the rights and dignity of vulnerable groups, particularly women and children.

Speaking at the 3rd International Conference on Rape and Child Sexual Abuse, under the theme: “Encroachment: Identifying and Defining Boundaries” in Minna, Bago acknowledged the persistent challenges in addressing gender-based violence, criticising the gap between discussions held at conferences and the implementation of solutions.

“One of the things I would like to say, and honestly I am very, very guilty of that. It is like we are all lying to ourselves, it is like we are deceiving ourselves. We come up every day, holding conferences, engaging in workshops, talking about gender-based violence, but in the field, what have we really done practically to bring an end to it?

“Well, I wouldn’t say we are all sleeping on it, but just like all the topics that we spoke about, we are trying to tackle a particular aspect that has come up and before you are done with that, something else comes up that has really taken over this other one. But one thing we need to do is that we need to be more practical in our homes, schools, and workplaces,” she said.

Speaking about encroachment, the Governor’s wife said that encroachment is more than just physical violations, explaining it as any act that infringes on another’s physical, emotional, or psychological space without consent.

“Boundaries are more than rules; they protect our values, sense of self, and humanity. No one has the right to cross into another person’s space without permission,” she noted.

She highlighted the devastating impact of sexual abuse, citing a rise in cases worldwide and emphasizing how survivors often remain silent due to cultural stigma, weak legal protections, and the lack of support systems.

“Cases of rape and child sexual abuse are on the rise across the world, leaving countless lives shattered. Many survivors carry their pain in silence, unable to speak out because of cultural stigma, weak legal protections, or the absence of a support system. This silence only prepares for wounds, reminding us of the urgent need to listen, act, and create a safer world for everyone.”

Mrs Bago stressed the importance of creating safe spaces in homes, schools, and media outlets where individuals can learn about consent, respect, and self-protection, stating that awareness and sensitization will go a long way in making people aware of this increasing scourge and take measures against it.

She also called for the consistent enforcement of laws like the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act, noting that these policies are only effective when fully implemented. Communities, she said, must be sensitized about the importance of these laws to ensure they are upheld.

The Governor’s wife emphasised the need for expanding safe homes for survivors beyond the state capital to local government areas adding that these centers would provide confidentiality and guidance, helping survivors reintegrate into society.

She decried the cultural tendencies to silence abuse, particularly when perpetrators are family members highlighting cases where survivors remain silent to protect family reputations, leaving children vulnerable to further harm.

The conference had various panel discussions, a book review and break-out sessions.
