Afolayan bags British Council’s top prize

The ingenuity of young filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan, who is famously regarded as a vendor of the new Nollywood initiative, once again, earned him accolades, as he won the British Council’s top prize at a high-octave event on Sunday night.

Afolayan received two laurels at the Creative Industry Awards, including the Creative Entrepreneur in Film-making and Overall Creative Entrepreneur, the latter being the biggest prize at the show organised by Creative Entrepreneurs Association of Nigeria (CEAN) for the British Council.

An obviously elated Afolayan, in his reaction via his BBM handle, said, “God just did it again. I was presented the British Council awards for the Creative Entrepreneur in Filmmaking and Overall Creative Entrepreneur Award of the Year! Thanks to the organisers and you guys for your support and prayers…”

The event, which took place at the British Council Gardens, Ikoyi, Lagos, had guests, including Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and the Deputy British High Commissioner to Nigeria.

According to the organizers, the initiative stems from the desire to boost the creative economic sector, by bringing together ideas about the creative industries, cultural industries, creative cities, clusters and creative classes.

“The Creative Entrepreneurs Association of Nigeria (CEAN) is the platform for creative entrepreneurs within Nigeria and in the Diaspora to foster collaborations, interaction and networking among creative entrepreneurs. It is aimed at enhancing the creative economy of Nigeria, building capacity, job and wealth creation opportunities for its members and their immediate community-within and outside Nigeria,” the organizers said in a recent statement.

Afolayan, known for award-winning flicks, is currently working on his latest project, October 1.

The producer of Irapada, Figurine and most recently, Phone Swap, is excited about the project, which he said is a far cry from anything that has been done by any filmmaker in Nigeria.

A visionary filmmaker, Afolayan was recently at the centre of a hit documentary series on the Yoruba heritage entitled Isedale.

The work, which provoked thoughts about Yoruba Kingdom and culture among AfricaMagic audiences, proved a success when the channel moved the series to prime time.

  • Trader bags 21 years for N4.2m fraud

A Lagos High Court, Ikeja on Thursday, sentenced a trader, Aruna Adeshina, to a 21-year imprisonment for defrauding his clients of N4.2 million.

The court, presided over by Justice Adeniyi Onigbanjo, handed down the sentence after the defendant pleaded guilty to the three-count charge of obtaining money by false pretences preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The judge sentenced him to seven-year imprisonment on each of the counts.

Counsel to the EFCC, Mrs Bunmi Bosede, had alleged that Adeshina, in January 2008, collected various sums of money from the trio of Joy Fomah, Henry Fomah and Bakare Adeyinka.

Bosede said that the defendant obtained the money under the pretext of supplying the victims with various quantities of used batteries and magnesium cast.

According to her, the trader failed to supply the products after collecting the money, a development that prompted his clients to petition the EFCC.

She said the offence contravened Section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud-Related Offences Act No. 14, Laws of Federation of Nigeria, 2006.

The defendant was first arraigned on September 16, 2008 when he pleaded not guilty to the charge. But on April 29, this year, he pleaded guilty.

In his judgement, yesterday, Justice Onigbanjo said the sentences would run concurrently, starting from June 1,2010.

He also ordered that Adeshina’s two landed property in the Alagbado area of the state, which was initially seized by the EFCC, should be forfeited to his victims as restitution.

  • October 1 bombings: Okah’s associate bags life jail

October 1 bombings: Okah’s associate bags life jail

A Federal High Court, Abuja yesterday sentenced Edmund Ebiware, an associate of the MEND leader, Henry Okah, to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of complicity in the October 1, 2010 twin-bombings in Abuja.

His conviction was based not on his active participation in the bombing, but because he failed to report the plot to the President or the police.

Ebiware, who broke down in tears after Justice Gabriel Kolawole pronounced judgement, was specifically accused of withholding information on the planned attack by not using reasonable means to leak the information to the President and Peace Officer to foil the planned attack.

“With all my struggle for the Niger Delta, this is what they are using to pay me back. God is the greatest judge,” the convict said.

The prosecution called six witnesses, while the convict was his own witness.

Justice Kolawole said that from the evidence before the court, there was a link between Ebiware and the leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger-Delta (MEND), Henry Okah, ahead of the bombings.

Justice Kolawole cited the analysis of Ebiware’s phone call logs as tendered by the PW5, Wasiu Agbaje, and said the convict was in contact with Okah who was convicted in South Africa on Monday for masterminding the Abuja bombings.

The court also relied on the testimony of PW4 who told the court that the accused informed him that Okah was not happy about the Amnesty Programme because some militants were excluded.

The court also recalled the testimony of the PW2 who said the Special Investigation Panel (SIP) set up by the government established that Henry Okah was in constant touch with the convict from the planning stage.

A text message retrieved from his mobile phone reads: “The independence hurricane, I was deeply involved. Shake the nation. Good morning”.

The court said the convict, in his statement, explained that by independence hurricane, he meant the independence bomb blasts.

Justice Kolawole said the conviction will serve as a lesson to the larger society because every Nigerian has a duty to ensure peace in the society.

Reviewing the testimony of the witnesses, the trial judge said the Prosecution Witness 4 (name withheld) was the only one with a weighty evidence against the convict. He, however, raised concern on why the PW4 was not charged along with the accused because he had fore-knowledge of the October 1 bomb blasts.

The judge said he would take the witness of the PW4 with caution, but expressed doubt if the defence witness was a witness of truth.

The court said the convict was not consistent in his oral testimony and written statements.

Besides, he said, the convict did not substantiate his claim that Henry Okah threatened him even though he claimed he told his wife.

Okah himself was convicted on Monday by a South African court for masterminding the Abuja blasts. He was found guilty on 13 counts related to terrorism.

    He also faces life imprisonment.

Once Justice Kolawole pronounced that “the accused is hereby found guilty as charged” yesterday, Ebiware cast a glance at the ceiling and began murmuring.

His counsel, Gordy Uche, pleaded with the court to consider the circumstance in which the accused begged for separate trial to prove his innocence.

“The accused is a young person not up to 35 years. He is married and has two children who are still of tender ages. My lord will see that the accused person on his own volition and believing in his own innocence applied for and granted a separate trial,” he said.

He added that Ebiware also had no previous record of conviction. In the sentence, Justice Kolawole said he was touched by the plea for leniency by the defence counsel and the fact that he had no criminal record and has two children of tender ages.

He, however, said the essence of judgment is to serve as deterrent and to seek to reform the convict.

He said:”When court gives sentence, it must make sure it maintains a balance because if the sentence is too harsh the goal of reform may not be achieved”.

Justice Kolawole said he was mindful of the sad effects the October 1 bombings had on the country.

He said: “Perhaps if the convict had reported the case, it would have saved the calamity.

“Many of the victims are yet to recover and may not fully recover from the injuries sustained.

“The convict is hereby sentenced to life imprisonment”.

The judge ordered that his two phones should be confiscated as items with which the accused was convicted.

“It is my hope that the convict will shun the company of individuals he cannot guarantee their character. It is a lesson for the larger society,” the judge said

The judge added that it is the duty of all Nigerians to report suspicious activities that may endanger the peace in the nation.

Others still standing trial on the bombings are Charles Okah and Obi Nwabueze.

The fourth accused person, Tiemkemfa Osuvwo, died in Kuje Prison.

The accused are standing trial over their alleged involvement in the Independent Day Abuja twin-bombings.

The accused are charged for allegedly waging war against the state in order to intimidate President Goodluck Jonathan, an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 37(1) of the Criminal Code, Cap 77 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN) 1990.

They are also accused of terrorism and conspiracy to commit treason, contrary to Section 40 (2) of the Criminal Code CAP 77, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN) 1990.

  • Martins bags goal No.6

    Martins bags goal No.6

Super Eagles striker Obafemi Martins scored his fifth goal of the season as he led Levante to a 4-0 win over visiting Mallorca in the Spanish league on Sunday.

The Nigerian got the ball rolling three minutes before the interval as he successfully battled with Pedro Geromel for a long ball over the top before slotting past Dudu Aouate for his sixth goal of the season.

The game was well and truly over within 13 minutes of the restart as David Navarro headed home at the back post from a corner before Ruben Garcia and Vicente Iborra also got on the scoresheet after being set-up brilliantly by Martins.

The pace and trickery of Martins, Garcia and Nabil El Zhar caused the visitors problems right from the off and the only surprise was it took the hosts so long to make the breakthrough.

Aouate made saves from Garcia, Martins and Navarro in the early stages while Navarro also had a goal ruled out for offside, but the opener did arrive on 42 minutes thanks to a combination of great persistence by Martins and awful defending by Geromel.

El Zhar’s long ball forward bounced between Geromel and Aouate and Martins managed to outmuscle his marker before stroking the loose ball past the Israeli from close range.

The Islanders’ defending did not get any better after the break as Navarro was given room to send a looping header in off the post from Michel’s corner four minutes into the second period.

Rueben then got his goal as he and Martins exchanged passes down the left before the 19-year-old smashed the ball past Aouate from an acute angle, and Iborra rounded off the scoring as again Mallorca failed to clear a corner and Martins squared the ball across the six-yard box where Navarro touched it back for the midfielder to fire home.
