My captors were angry I had only N20,000 in my account – Hirse

Mr Bagudu Hirse, former Minister of State (Foreign Affairs), who was kidnapped in Kaduna, on Nov. 20, 2016, has said that his captors were angry when they confirmed that he had only N20,000 in his account.

Hirse, who relayed his experience with the captors in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Wednesday in Jos, said that the captors confirmed the balance in his account when they checked his phone.

“They went through my bank details and expressed deep disappointment that a former minister and Ambassador had such a little sum in his account.

“That was when they started harassing my wife because they had earlier asked for a ransom of N50 million.

“In fact, when they confirmed the figure, they started doubting if I was the Bagudu Hirse, a former Nigeria envoy to Namibia,” he said.

Hirse said that the kidnappers kept ordering his wife to bring the money that her husband was hiding.

“My wife told them the truth about our financial status, but they were not convinced,” he said.

The former minister, however, confirmed that the captors were “paid something in dollars”, before he was eventually released.

He said that the captors told him that they were graduates who were forced into kidnapping to survive because they were “jobless and frustrated”.

“One said that he graduated from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, six years ago, and had remained without a job, while another said he studied Chemical Engineering and had been jobless for five years,” he said.

Hirse, who said he was “treated very well” by the kidnappers, said that he maintained a cordial relationship with them throughout the period of the captivity.

He advised government to create more jobs, and stressed the need to concentrate on building the private sector.

“If the private sector is supported to be viable, there will be jobs and most of these idle youths will be absorbed,” he said.

NAN reports that eight suspects have been arrested in connection with Hirse’s ordeal.

Mr Don Awunah, police spokesperson, who announced the arrest, said that the gang was apprehended based on intelligence reports and surveillance which led to the arrest of one Dominic Nwakpa, the gang leader, on Jan. 1.

Among those arrested and paraded by the police was a dismissed police officer, Clinton Abere.

Others included Ifeanyi Chukwu, Balat Paul (driver), Ibrahim Samuel, Jatau Peter and Afini Paul, younger sister to the driver of the gang and owner of the house where kidnapped victims were kept.

The police quoted the suspects as admitting that they collected ransom before releasing Hirse.

  • Five arrested over ex-minister’s abduction

The police officers have arrested five suspects in connection with the abduction of a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Bagudu Hirse.

Bagudu, who later regained freedom, was abducted by gunmen in Kaduna on November 20, 2016 at the residence of Mamman Daura, where he went to console the family over the death of the former Sultan of Sokoto, Ibrahim Dasuki.

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idri, has also described as “sickening” reports that about 800 corpses were found in Kafanchan, Southern Kaduna.

Idris spoke in Abuja during a New Year dinner organized by him for Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGs) and other secretariat staff.

On the arrest of the suspects, he said: “We have arrested five suspects that kidnapped the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bagudu Hirse. They are now in our custody and in two or three days time, they will be paraded and unfortunately, a woman is among them.

On the crisis in Southern Kaduna, Ibrahim added: “I visited all the villages and what I saw was marvelous. I found policemen in the hinterlands and they were at alert. I have to note that in this country, as leaders in any capacity, we have to have the love of this country at heart because when I was going to get firsthand information, I went by road and I saw people in festive mood contrary to what was reported in the media.

“Some alleged that they saw about 800 corpses and I must say that the report is sickening and when someone from outside reads such report, they will think something is wrong with this country.

“Some of us are yet to imbibe the principles of leadership and I think that is what is lacking in this country. We need to love this country more in 2017 as individuals and there is need for our leaders to love this country more than they love themselves.”

  • Former minister regains freedom

    Former minister regains freedom

Former Minister of State (Foreign Affairs), Mr. Bagudu Hirse, who was abducted by gunmen in Kaduna last Sunday, has regained his freedom.

This was confirmed by his brother, Mr. John Hirse.

“Bagudu was released in the early hours of Saturday,” John, retired permanent secretary in the federal civil service and currently District Head of Mangu, in Plateau, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Jos yesterday.

He said that the former minister was “hale and hearty” and thanked Nigerians for the prayers and words of encouragement “during the tróing period”.

“May God reward everyone who stood by us during the tough period,” he said.

John, however, did not give further details and also refused to comment over whether a ransom was paid to the abductors.

Bagudu was abducted by gunmen at the Kaduna residence of Ambassador Mamman Daura, where he had gone to console the family over the death of the former Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji ibrahim Dasuki.

Bagudu’s abduction took place a day after the release of Sheikh Yusuf, a Jos-based cleric and Administrative Secrertary of the Jamaátu Nasril Islam (JNI), who was equally kidnapped in Kaduna.

The cleric was released on Saturday November 19, after four days in the custody of his abductors.

  • Abductors mistook Hirse for Daura – Eyewitness

An eyewitness in the abduction of Mr. Bagudu Hirse, has said the kidnap of the former Foreign Affairs minister was “like a scene in a horror movie.”

The eyewitness, Mr. Samuel Pukat, an Abuja-based businessman, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos on Monday, that he was with Hirse when the gunmen pounced on him.

He said, “We were in Kaduna and decided to pay a condolence visit to Alhaji Mamman Daura over the death of the former Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki.

“Mamman’s wife is from the late Dasuki’s family, so we decided to show our concern, and arrived Daura’s house around 9.00 a.m.”

He said they were first told that Daura had traveled and had made to leave after signing the condolence register.

“But just as we were moving to the car, a younger brother to Mamman came out and told us to wait for him (Mamman) to come.

“About the same time, two vehicles, on fast speed, drove into the compound and some gunmen in masks jumped out and headed directly to Hirse.

“My feeling is that they mistook him (Hirse) for Mamman because both seem to have the same stature and wear their caps the same way,” he said.

The eyewitness said the men, after instilling fear in everyone in sight, grabbed Hirse by his big gown and dragged him to one of the cars, pushed him in, and drove off in high speed.

  • Former Minister Bagudu Hirse kidnapped in Kaduna

Former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bagudu Hirse, was yesterday afternoon kidnapped in Kaduna city.

Spokesman of the Kaduna State Police Command, Aliyu Usman, who confirmed his kidnap, said the command has launched a manhunt for the abductors.

The Nation gathered that Hirse was snatched in front of Alhaji Mamman Daura’s residence on Inuwa Wada road.

According to sources, the former minister was on a condolence visit to the family of the late 18th Sultan of Sokoto, Ibrahim Dasuki, a street next to Inuwa Wada road, and he decided to pay homepage to Mamman Daura.

“From what I could hear, they told him to get into their car but he was trying to seek further explanations from them and as soon as people started approaching the scene, one of them fired into the air.

“That was when they forced him into the car but removed his ‘babariga’ and cap, threw it on the floor and drove away,” he stated.

A local security man told reporters that when the kidnappers shot, people ran away and so could not make out what they told the former minister.

“After the gunmen drove away, Daura was informed about the incident and more security agents were deployed in the house before he departed for Abuja.”

Meanwhile, no demand was said to have been made last night but Usman promised that the kidnappers will be nabbed.
