  • Banditry: Over 6000 IDPs return home in Zamfara

The Acting Director, Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. John Agim, says over 6000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) had returned home in Zamfara.

Agim disclosed this while speaking with journalists in Gusau yesterday. He said  the return of peace and security in Maradu, Shinkafi and Zurmi council areas led to the massive return of the IDPs to their respective villages.

Agim said farming and other economic activities had picked up again as bandits no longer had freedom to operate in such areas.

He said that Zamfara which was once bedeviled by incessant killings due to banditry, cattle rustling, kidnappings and armed robbery was now assured of safety of lives and property.

He said  with the support of Air Task Force (ATF), the Operation Sharan Daji (OPSD) had recently launched series of air strikes against bandits’ hideouts and camps in Sububu and Rugu forests.

The Acting Director of Defence Information said the attacks had successfully neutralised a large number of armed bandits and destroyed their camps.

He said the momentum would be sustained, and that the tempo in the fight to wipe out criminalities in the state would also be increased.

  • Zamfara SSG: we lost 3,000 to banditry

About 3,000 lives have been lost to banditry in Zamfara State, Secretary to the State Government Prof. Abdullahi Shinkafi said yesterday.

According to him, the government has spent N17 billion in the last seven years to fight the menace.

The money was spent from 2011 till date to procure vehicles for security agencies, pay allowances of security operatives, provide accommodation for soldiers of the 232 Battalion and other logistics.

Shinkafi added that over 2,000 homes have been destroyed, 500 cars burnt and over 500 persons kidnapped.

Prof. Shinkafi spoke yesterday in Gusau, at a town hall meeting organised by the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), to find solution to the worsening insecurity in the state.

He said: “When you hear N17 billion, it sounds huge, but when you break it down to the various components, you will see it is not even enough.

    “In 2011, we provided 457 vehicles for security agencies; 2,250 in 2012; 77 in 2014 and 50 each in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

“We also had to give money to victims to alleviate their suffering.”

The secretary attributed banditry to shortage of manpower, stressing the need for more indigenes to join the security services to protect the state.

National President of NBA Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN) wondered why the Federal Government will allow the state to spend so much on security.

He argued that the money would have been used to build infrastructure and grow the economy, saying security operations should be funded by the Federal Government and not states.

According to him, providing funds without being present to monitor how the funds are spent cannot yield the desired results.

The president said their visit was not a political move, but to promote peace, resolve the conflict and uphold the Constitution.

The Nigeria Air Force (NAF) has said its Air Task Force in Operation Diran Mikiya has degraded several bandits’ hideouts in Shamashale village and Rugu forest.

A statement yesterday by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, said the bandits used some makeshift settlements in Rugu as bases for their operations.

He explained that the attack on Shamashale was conducted on August 15 following further confirmatory Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions that showed the presence of bandits there.

The statement reads: “The attacks, which were executed in support of ground troops in Sector 2 of Operation Sharan Daji, were planned based on credible intelligence that the bandits were using an abandoned primary school in Shamashale.

“Accordingly, the ATF dispatched two combat helicopters to attack the location. And int the attack, some bandits carrying sophisticated high calibre weapons were seen trying to flee. Some were on motorcycles carrying AK-47 rifles and rather than dropping their weapons and surrendering, attempted to shoot at the helicopters; hence they were neutralised.

“Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) conducted on August 16 confirmed that the kingpin’s main hideout had been severely degraded and human intelligence sources later showed pictures of some of the slain bandits.

“The adjoining settlement camps within Rugu Forest, which had earlier been confirmed to be inhabited by only bandits, were attacked on August 18.

“A ground attack aircraft and two combat helicopters struck the camps in successive waves; first targeting the shelters and then executing follow-on attacks to ensure the threat posed to the local villagers was adequately dealt with.

“The ATF would continue to dominate the area through armed reconnaissance and air interdiction missions to completely decimate the bandits to ensure a return to normalcy in Zamfara and other states in the Northewest.

“Items recovered from the bandits include two General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs); two AK-47 rifles; 100 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition and two mobile phones.”

End cattle rustling, banditry, Buhari tells soldiers

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday expressed optimism that the Nigerian Army has been adequately equipped to end cattle rustling, banditry, and other security threats in the country.

He spoke during the 2016 Nigerian Army Day Celebration “Optimizing the Capability of the Nigerian Army to meet Contemporary Security Challenges” in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.

The President noted that the incessant activities of the insurgents and cattle rustlers have made farming, livestock management and other economic activities more difficult in the face of the general economic challenges.

He, however, praised the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, for his foresight and initiative in mobilising adequate resources to ensure precision in the conduct of the war against the crimes.

Buhari lauded the Army for collaborating with sister agencies towards degrading and decimating the miscreants.

His words: “I am optimistic that the operations of the last few days will help restore economic activities of surrounding communities bedeviled by the menace.

“I urge you to intensify and perfect current strategies, approaches, techniques and tactics towards curtailing all forms of lawlessness across the country.

“It is quite gratifying to inspect the equipment displayed, which showcased the robust capability of the Nigerian Army to ward off internal and external aggression against the country. The Command Post Exercise also reminds me of the importance of staff work in the field during the civil war in the 60s and the Chadian Operations in the 80s.

“I am pleased at the dexterity, prowess and level of professionalism displayed by various components, including the combat airborne jump by personnel of the Nigerian Army supported by the Nigerian Air Force.

“I am confident that the Nigerian Armed Forces have been amply repositioned more than ever before to confront contemporary and emerging security challenges in the country,” he said.

President Buhari added that the involvement of private partners in the defence sector, especially in terms of provision of specialist equipment under the Public Private Partnership, was a welcome development. He urged the Armed Forces to leverage on the opportunity towards enhancing capacity.

The President has also vowed that his administration will deal with any security threat in any part of the country.

He spoke while commissioning a 75 kilometer road terminating in Wanke in Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State. He also commissioned a 20 kilometer road in Tsafe council.

His words: “Our security situation is improving, not only in the Northeast, but all over the country. We are confident that our macro-economic policies, as well as the monetary policies being implemented by the CBN will lead to the revitalisation of the industries and steady growth in significant sectors of the economy.

“Our commitment to secure the country is yielding results as noted by the governor that for the first time since the outbreak of the Boko Haram insurgency seven years ago, the people of Borno State celebrated Eid-el-Fitri devoid of any security barricades.

“Government is determined to, more than ever before, deal decisively with any threat to the security of this country.”

Zamfara State Governor Abdulaziz Yari said the roads will boost economic activities, agricultural produce and employment in the state.

He added that the roads have also provided security personnel more access to areas where criminals easily operate.

His words: “In a short while, Your Excellency will also commission the 75 kilometers road linking the gricultural communities Danjibga, Kuchinkalgo, Kigana, Bilbis, Kuchiri, Wanke and seven bridges along the road. It cost N7.8 billion, including payment of compensation.

“The President has also commissioned 20 kilometers road and drainages costing N2.52 billion in Tsafe. The constructions include rehabilitation and the complete reconstruction of Federal roads, which covers 610 kilometers.” He hinted that N157.3 billion was spent on 12 Federal roads.

At the function were Governors of Katsina, Sokoto, and Kebbi States, Aminu Masari, Aminu Tambuwal and Atiku Bagudu.
