  • Police nab two suspected robbers for ‘attacking’ bank customer

    Two suspected robbers, who allegedly attacked a commercial bank customer in Ilasamaja, Lagos, were at the weekend arrested by the police in Lagos.

    The suspects, identified as Boniface and Joseph, were apprehended by a team led by Ilasamaja Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Titilayo Oriyomi, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP).

    It was gathered that the suspects waylaid a customer, who withdrew money from the bank and fled on their motorcycle.

    Onlookers were said to have raised the alarm, which attracted the DPO and her men, who were on Yuletide patrol.

    A police source said: “They attacked a customer who was just coming out of a commercial bank in Ilasamaja. The people around shouted and we were attracted to the scene.

    “To escape from the angry sympathisers, the suspects ran across the expressway on their motorcycle, but the DPO and her team pursued and arrested them. They confessed that they attacked the victim to raise money for Christmas.”

  • Man ‘snatches’ N1.1m from bank customer

    AN unemployed man, Festus Eboh, was yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly snatching N1.1million from a customer while leaving  a bank.

    The 35-year-old  accused,  who lives in Meiran, a Lagos suburb, is standing trial on a two-count charge before Magistrate O.A. Akokhia

    Prosecuting Inspector Benedict Aigbokhan told the court that the crime was committed at Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), Amuwo Odofin branch  around 12.30 p.m., last October 14.

    He alleged that the accused and others at large conspired to snatch bags from customers coming out of the bank.

    The prosecutor said the accused waylaid a customer and snatched a bag containing N1.1 million from him.

    “On October 26, at about 10am, the accused also snatched another GTBank customer’s 30,000USD at the said place.

    “The accused was apprehended by the police after information got to the bank’s  authorities  and the CCTV was reviewed,” Aigbokhan said

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Akokhia granted the accused N1 million bail, with two sureties in the like sum.

    She said one of the sureties should be a relation of the accused, must be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Two suspected armed robbers Thursday attacked a bank customer, fleecing her of a huge amount of money.

    The incident occurred at Annex Bus Stop, Apapa, after the woman, said to be a trader had withdrawn the money from the bank.

    It was gathered that the robbers after fleecing the victim, fled towards Koffo Abayomi Street in Apapa.

    They however abandoned their operational vehicle and snatched a motorcycle when they discovered that there was gridlock.

    An eyewitness, Ifeanyi Ikechukwu, who hinted on the incident, said the robbers drove a grey Toyota Camry car.

    He said: “They drove grey Camry ‘big for nothing’ and robbed a woman selling snacks and recharge card near Mobil fuel station at Annex Bus stop.

    “She was said to have gone to the bank to withdraw money to purchase her market, especially recharge cards.

    “The robbers drove through Kofo Abayomi and on meeting traffic; they used their vehicle to hit a commercial motorcycle. They immediately disembarked and snatched the bike from the owner and drove off on it.

    “Although other commercial motorcyclists chased them, they were not able to catch up with them.”

    According to a source, policemen from Apapa Division visited the scene and removed the vehicle.

    The source said they would investigate to ascertain the owner of the vehicle.

    He said: “Per chance the vehicle belongs to the robbers, the vehicle particulars will make it easier for us to arrest them.

    “But if it doesn’t, we will still go to the vehicle licensing organisation to get the details of the owner and ensure they are informed.”

    Meanwhile, Operatives of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Thursday foiled the theft of over 30-meters Light-Up Lagos Project long cable in Ogudu.

    It was gathered that two persons vandalising the cable jumped into a nearby bush upon sighting RRS patrol van.

    The vandals were said to have drawn the concealed cables from the connecting point at the base of a lamp post, before they saw the operatives.

    According to the police, the patrol team leader contacted officials of Lagos State Electricity Board in charge of the area to take over before they continued their routine patrol.

    Some gunmen yesterday killed a police Inspector and a civilian on Okunola Street in Idimu, Lagos.

    The Inspector was shot while he was withdrawing money from an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) at a bank.

    Two of the robbers were killed while fleeing on their motorcycle. One, who was identified as Gaffaru Ismail was arrested by Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives and mobile policemen in the area.

    It was gathered that the gunmen had robbed a bank customer of the money which he withdrew inside the banking hall.

    The gunmen, numbering four, were said to have stormed the area around 11am and went straight to the said customer who was leaving the bank.

    It was learnt that they had successfully fleeced their victim and were escaping when they sighted the Inspector using the ATM and shot him on the head, apparently to stop him from engaging them.

    The Nation gathered that people around rushed the Inspector to a hospital where he was confirmed dead, while other policemen stationed at the bank called for reinforcement.

    Although one of the suspects escaped, the police team that chased the others gunned down two and arrested one of them alive.

    Their motorcycles, as well as two guns were recovered from them.

    The suspect who were initially taken to the Area M command in Idimu, was later transferred to the command headquarters with the recovered items in two vans marked BDG158EE and KWL424NS

    A police source said the armed robbers have an insider source at the bank.

    “There is someone in the bank who usually informs them when a customer comes to collect huge money. The way they came, it was clear that they had information and knew exactly who to target

    “The suspect that was arrested was the one who shot the Inspector,” he said.

    Police spokesperson Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent (SP) said the case has been transferred to Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) for appropriate action.
