  • Banker charged with stealing N553,500 from customers

    A 35-year-old Accounts Officer with ACCION Microfinance Bank, Bashiru Odunukan, who allegedly stole N553,500 from customers, was on Thursday brought before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Odunukan, whose address was not provided, is facing a count charge of stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.

    The Prosecutor, ASP Thomas Nurudeen, said that the accused committed the offence from November 2017 to October 2018 at the Anthony Village branch of the bank in Lagos.

    Nurudeen said that the accused, who worked in the customer accounts unit of the bank, was tasked with processing loan repayments to the bank.

    According to him, the accused collected money from customers repaying their loans and converted it to his personal use.

    “It was an auditor of the bank attached to Sango-Ota branch, Mr Ayodeji Olulode, who discovered the theft when he was reconciling customers’ loan repayment records,” Nurudeen said.

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that stealing from one’s employer contravenes Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised), and punishable with seven years’ imprisonment.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs K.B. Ayeye, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum.

    Ayeye ordered that the surety should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case was adjourned until March 5, 2019, for mention.

  • Banker in court for alleged fraud

    A 28-year-old micro finance bank teller, Gbenga Okubajo, who allegedly defrauded five customers of N600, 000, yesterday appeared before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Okubajo, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of fraud and stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecutor Ben Ekundayo said the accused committed the offences on May 15 at Broad Street, Lagos Island.

    He alleged that the accused, a teller at Finex Micro Finance Bank Ltd., stole N600,000 belonging to the bank when he siphoned the deposits of the customers to his account.

    “He collected the N600,000 from the customers on the pretext of depositing the money into their accounts .

    “The theft became known when the customers came for their money and found out that they were neither deposited into their accounts nor recorded, ” Ekundayo said.

    Magistrate A.M. Olumide-Fusika granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in the like sum.

    She said one of the sureties should be a relative of the accused and the other, a community leader.

    The case continues on January 21.

  • Banker, 28, arraigned over N2.6m theft

    A 28-year-old banker, Mr Saheed Adebanjo, was yesterday arraigned before an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing N2.6 million belonging to his employer.

    Prosecuting Sergeant John Iberem said the accused committed the offence in May at 5, Elepe Road, Ikorodu.

    He said the accused stole N2.6 million belonging to Asha Microfinance Bank.

    “The suspect obtained the money with pretext of paying the money to bank customers, a representation known to be false,” Iberem said.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate E.O. Ogunkanmi granted the accused N1 million bail and two sureties the in like sum.

    The case continues on October 11.

    45- year-old banker, Mike Chinedu Nwaenie, has told the Somolu Customary Court that his wife, Mrs Asher Ifeanyi Nwaenie has been threatening him, and doesn’t take care of him. Mike also accused his wife, Mrs. Asher Ifeanyi Nwaenie of tarnishing his image. He urged the court on Tuesday to dissolve his 4- year-old marriage with Asher.

    ”I don’t want the marriage anymore, I am not comfortable with the marriage, she has tarnished my image, she has turned me to a laughing stock. People look at me as a foolish man, she said I am impotent, is marriage a do or die? Her sister and her elder brother called me saying she will kill me if I leave my wife alone. she does not take care of me, she doesn’t cook for me, she disrespects my family members. “She did operation for overal east without my consent, and the bill goes to my account, because it’s my family hospital, she reported me to my office, such that my boss, a woman, called me and started insulting me.

    My wife embarrassed me at my office with the aim to make me to stop working. She doesn’t have the heart of forgiveness, the same woman she is fighting with, who is like a sister to me, is the same person that helped her when I was not around. The woman also took food to my wife while she was in the hospital. She has accused me of sleeping with my lawyer; we stay in the same house but I lock myself up, so she would not kill me.There is no love, and the love will never come back again, it has really gone far, this is beyond me, I can’t continue with the marriage again.

    They call her lion at my house because of her attitude. She did not make any effort in trying to solve the case (sic). Responding, Asher said:” Nobody ever threatened him, though he has been mentioning it, and then I confronted my family members about the threats and they denied it. I started living with his elder brother before we got married and we agreed that after four months of our traditional marriage we will move out, but we didn’t, still, I kept on persuading him whether he would change his mind, and I contributed 300,000 to it. The case has been adjourned to July 3.

  • Gunmen kill banker in Warri

    A banker in Warri, Delta State, Obaro Oji, was, on Tuesday night killed by suspected assassins around Ekpan Bridge.

    Although details of the incident were sketchy yesterday, sources said the deceased was cornered around the bridge, close to NNPC Housing Complex, between Warri South and Uvwie councils.

    They said the man was allegedly killed about 8 pm by the suspects, who reportedly chased him to the spot and shot him. They did not take his car.

    “The man was trailed there by the killers and on catching up with him, they just shot him dead and left him without taking anything from him or his car,” the source said.

    Police spokesman Andrew Aniamaka said the deceased had been reported missing.

    “He was initially declared missing by his family on that Tuesday because his family reported to the police that they were looking for him.

    “He was found in a pool of blood this morning (Wednesday) and the police contacted his family with the information. The family joined the police in the evacuation of his body,” Aniamaka

    Police arraign banker for ‘reckless driving’

    A 29-year-old bank worker, Korede Lawal, was yesterday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court for allegedly causing the death of Chris Azuzu.

    Lawal was arraigned on a three-count charge of man slaughter and reckless driving before Magistrate Abimbola Komolafe.

    The prosecutor, Cyriacus Osuji, alleged that Lawal, who lives on Olumegbon Road, Surulere, Lagos  drove recklessly on the highway and caused Azuzu’s death.

    Osuji told the court that the defendant committed the  offence on December 6.

    He said the accident occurred on Bourdillion road Ikoyi, Lagos at about 4.20pm.

    Osuji said the defendant did not see the late Chris in time while he was trying to cross the road. He was said to have hit the late Chris with his Toyota Camry car.

    He said the victim was taken to the hospital, where he died.

    According to the prosecutor, the offences are punishable under Sections 20, 19 (1) and 45 schedule 1 of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Komolafe granted him N500,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    She added that the sureties must be gainfully employed, resident in Lagos, and show evidence of three years tax to the Lagos State government.

    The case continues on February 6.

    Banker arrested aboard plane for ‘N25.4m theft’

    A former banker, who allegedly stole N25,466,330.00 from a new generation bank but was arrested in Lagos on a Dubai-bound plane, has been charged before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    James Oke, 28, and his alleged accomplice Moyosore Shofowora, 27, who is also a banker, was docked on Friday before Chief Magistrate B. A. Sonuga.

    The defendants, of the bank’s Ogba Branch, are standing trial on two counts of conspiracy and stealing.

    Prosecuting Police Inspector Abbass Abayomi told the court that the defendants committed ‎the alleged offences between September 22, 2016 and July 28, 2017, at the bank’s Ogba Branch.

    He alleged that they conspired and stole N25,466,330 from the bank.

    According to him, the offences contravene Sections 411 and 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Oke and Shofowora pleaded not guilty.

    Their counsel Mr O. Gani and Mr U. N. Ezeokeke sought bail in liberal term.

    But this was opposed by the prosecutor on the ground that the defendants were a flight risk.

    Abayomi said: “Your honour I’m opposing the bail. The bail of the defendants should be very stringent, because if you grant them bail on liberal terms they would abscond.

    “The first defendant was about leaving the country when he was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport. He boarded the plane, belted himself up and the plane was just about to take off when the police came onboard and arrested him. He then led the police to the second defendant’s home where he was also arrested.

    “The defendants, after successfully defrauding the bank, tendered their resignation letters to the bank and left.

    “The bank discovered the fraud afterwards and caught their accomplice who was still in the bank’s employment. The accomplice confessed and returned all the money he stole, after which he was sacked.

    “It was this third person, who isn’t charged along with them, that told the police that the first defendant was at the airport about to leave the country.”

    In a bench ruling, Magistrate Sonuga granted each defendant N5million bail, with two sureties in the like sum.

    The first surety must be a manager at Skye Bank, while the second must be a manager at Wema Bank and must own landed property.

    They must also surrender their international passports, deposit N1million into the account of the court’s registrar and have their addresses verified.

    The case continues on November 14.

  • Banker charged with alleged theft of N3m from ATM

    The State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti-Yaba, Lagos yesterday charged a  Bank worker, Mrs. Chinonye Okafoagu, for allegedly stealing N3 million from an Automated Teller Machine (ATM).

    Okafoagu, 33, was arraigned before Chief Magistrate A. O. Salawu of an Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, on a four-count charge of conspiracy, stealing, forgery and false modification of ATM data.

    The police, in a charge marked N/73/2017, alleged that the banker and others now at large, committed the offence on March 7, last year, at the FESTAC branch of the bank.

    The defendant allegedly, without lawful authority, modified the ATM’s data and stopped the machine from dispensing money, “in a bid to steal the N3m”.

    According to the police, she misrepresented herself as, Elizabeth, the woman authorised to handle the bank’s ATM on the said date, and appended her signature in the ATM loading staff register, which she presented to the bank’s management.

    The alleged offences contravene and are punishable under sections 409, 285(7), 389(1), and 365(1) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

    Okafoagu pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Salawu granted her N500,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    She adjourned the case till September 25, for trial.
