Former US President Barack Obama and wife Michelle have addressed the rumours surrounding their marriage.

In a recent episode of Craig Robinson’s podcast “IMO”, the couple jokingly dismissed speculation about their divorce.

Michelle Obama remarked that whenever they’re not together, people assume they’re getting a divorce.

Barack Obama chimed in, saying he’s often unawares of these rumors until someone mentions them to him.

He said: “So, I don’t even know this stuff’s going on. And then somebody will mention it to me, and I’m all like, ‘What are you talking about?’”

Michelle credited Barack Obama for making her a better person.

“There hasn’t been one moment in our marriage where I’ve thought about quitting on my man. And we’ve had some really hard times and we’ve had a lot of fun times, a lot of adventures and I have become a better person because of the man I’m married to,” she said.

    Michelle Obama dismisses divorce rumours

Michelle Obama has denied rumours of impending divorce with former US President Barack Obama, calling them baseless.

In a recent episode of Sophia Bush’s podcast “Work in Progress“, Michelle set the record straight, explaining that her decision to skip high-profile events like President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and President Donald Trump’s inauguration were simply personal choices.

She expressed frustration that people couldn’t fathom a grown woman making decisions for herself without it being attributed to marital issues.

“That’s the thing that we as women, I think we struggle with: disappointing people. I mean, so much so that this year people were, you know, they couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing.

“That this couldn’t be a grown woman just making a set of decisions for herself, right?’ she continued.

Obama added: ‘That’s what society does to us.’

Michelle emphasised the importance of independence and self-empowerment, revealing that she’s now making choices solely for herself, a departure from her earlier life as First Lady and wife.

She’s prioritising personal growth, self-discovery and her personal desires.

The former First Lady also touched on societal expectations and how they impact women’s decisions.

She believed that society often labels women’s independence as “negative and horrible” when it doesn’t fit traditional stereotypes.

“We start actually, finally going, “What am I doing? Who am I doing this for?” And if it doesn’t fit into the sort of stereotype of what people think we should do, then it gets labeled as something negative and horrible.’

‘So you know, now is the time for me to start asking myself these hard questions of who do I truly want to be every day,’ she said.

Michelle said that looks ‘like whatever I want it to look like.’

“And I still find time to, you know, give speeches, to be out there in the world, to work on projects. I still care about girls’ education.

“We, you know, the library is opening a year from now.”

“But the interesting thing is that when I say no, for the most part, people are like, I get it, and I’m OK, right?” she added.

  • Joshua meets former US President Obama

Anthony Joshua posed for an inspirational photo with former president Barack Obama last Friday.

The pair were invited to speak at an event in Spain hosted by SAP and Joshua could not pass up on the opportunity to get a picture with the 44th president of the United States.

Joshua posted the photo to his Instagram page on Tuesday with the caption: ”CEO Summit. A long way from where it all started.”

The former heavyweight champion is currently preparing to make his comeback after he suffered a shock defeat to Andy Ruiz Jr earlier this month.

It was the first defeat Joshua has tasted since turning professional and saw the London fighter lose his WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight titles to the unfancied Mexican.

The 29-year-old has the chance to reclaim his world titles in a rematch later this year with Joshua’s second encounter with Ruiz expected to take place in England. However, Tyson Fury’s manager Frank Warren has urged Joshua to consider his options before fighting Ruiz again.

”I do have my doubts,” Warren told BBC 5 Live’s Sportsweek. ”I don’t think he should take the rematch. Maybe he should take some time out and regroup, I don’t know. That’s his decision. But he’ll be fighting a guy who next time will have more than five weeks’ notice and go into a proper training camp.

”I’m not going to say or make any predictions about the shape of his body, but he’s got fast hands and I believe he’s got Joshua’s number. He’s taken Joshua’s best shots and he knows he has the punching power to do damage to Anthony Joshua.”

  • The Barack Obama example

Former President of the United States of America Barack Obama is by any standard a world icon. Not because he became the first African-American to preside over the affairs of the world’s most powerful nation, but because he is an active and a rounded man. A man who writes with elegance and talks convincingly, a man who can make a leper buy a pair of shoes. A reading of his two books – Dreams from my Father and Audacity of Hope – would tell you he is a rapacious reader. I have never met him but I enjoyed watching him on television and especially during his eight years in the White House or even during the campaigns he went through to become a two-term president. Not to forget that he earned his deserved place as a presidential candidate because of his oratory.

His oratory and quick wit can be traced to the fact that he is a voracious reader. As president, he observed an annual ritual of releasing a list of books he reads every year. The list is not just to name books and impress us that he read them, he demonstrated his understanding of each through writing a few lines of summary, talking about the essence and the heart of the book. He did it in a way that any reader is convinced that this is a leader who knows what he is writing about. If he lists a book, he would let you know what he likes about the book and what he does not so as to let you know it was not for showmanship.

I am looking forward to the day we will have such a public figure in Nigeria who would celebrate reading and show us that he reads. What do we have? We have men and women in power who spend their time holding endless nocturnal meetings on how to plunder our commonwealth to service their own greed and not to promote any better life for the citizens. It would be the day when a public figure would convene a meeting where books would be talked about and he/she would be able to give insights to what he/she is reading. That is when we would be able to convince our younger ones that readers are leaders.

A few weeks ago, I saw a publication where Obama’s book list for the year 2018 was published. Top on the list of course was his wife Michelle’s bestselling book, Becoming. Although I have not read the book, the reviews of it that I have read tell me it is a book I would enjoy because of its down-to-earth writing. An electronic copy of the book was sent to me a few days after it was published by a reader of this column. I was grateful to the reader, but on further enquiries from him how he got it, he said it was downloaded online. I thanked him for thinking it fit to send to me. However, I told him I am not an eBook person and that I don’t want to encourage piracy by reading it.

I am also impressed that in the Obama list are a sizeable number of books by African writers. Perhaps this could be traced to the fact that Obama’s African ancestry is coming to play here. Among the Africans on the list are two Nigerians: the immortal Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s runaway success Americanah. When next you meet one of our public officials, ask if they have read the two writers or any of them! God help you if they’ve ever heard of Chimamandah. The former president also read Kenya’s biggest writer Ngugi wa Thiongo’s massively political novel A Grain of Wheat, not leaving out Libya’s Hisham Matar’s The Return and of course Nelson Mandela’s magnum opus Long Walk to Freedom. Finally on the African list is Canada’s Esi Edugyan’s Washington Black, who like Obama has links with Africa. Her parents are from Ghana.

There is also the controversial VS Naipaul on his reading menu. Obama last year read A House for Mr Biswas, a novel which for me signifies the essential Naipaul. I read the book about thirty-five years ago and the death of the author last year has made me to tell myself to find it and read it again. Not left out of the former president’s list is award-winning Michael Ondaatje’s Warlight, who Wikipedia describes as “Sri Lanka-born Canadian poet, fiction writer, essayist, novelist, editor and filmmaker” and the English novelist Zadie Smith’s Feel Free.

  • Trump ranks worst U.S. President in poll

Trump ranks worst U.S. President in poll

President Donald Trump has been ranked as the worst U.S. President in history in a Presidents’ Day poll of political scientists that ranked all 44 of the people who have served as U.S. president.

Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Teddy Roosevelt respectively took the top four spots in the Boise State University “Presidential Greatness Survey.”

While Trump is the 45th President, one of his predecessors, Grover Cleveland, was elected two separate times, making him the 22nd and 24th President, who ranked as 24th on the survey.

The experts were asked to rank each president on a scale from zero – worst – to 100 – best – based on their overall performance in office.

Their rankings showed that Trump came in last place with an average score of 12.34.

Coming in first place, according to the survey, is Abraham Lincoln, who scored an average of 95.03 between both Democrats and Republicans surveyed while George Washington got a rating of 92.59.

Just over 57 per cent of those polled identified as Democrats while 13 per cent were Republican and 27 per cent were Independents.

The top seven presidents that have remained the same since the poll was last conducted in 2014: Lincoln, Washington, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, Harry Truman, and Dwight D. Eisenhower.

In the latest round of survey, former president Barack Obama moved up in the rankings to 8th best president, compared to 18th he ranked in the 2014 survey.

Even Republican respondents rated Trump as the fourth worst president – 40th of 44th while they placed Obama as the 16th.

Ronald Reagan, who also moved up from his previous ranking, trailed behind Obama in 9th place.

Bearing in mind that this was Trump’s first year in office, the survey takers asked respondents to grade him on an A-F scale.

He was graded on the subjects: his presidency overall, legislative accomplishments, foreign policy leadership, embodying institutional norms, and communicating with the public.

Overall, scholars gave him failing grades – three Fs and two Ds – while he scored highest on communicating with the public and lowest on embodying institutional norms.

However, self-identifying Republicans graded the 45th president higher – three Ds and two Cs.

The higher marks awarded Trump were in communicating with the  public and foreign policy leadership.

Trump was rated worse than President Richard Nixon, who quit under pressure from the Watergate scandal, ranking as 33rd.

Trump was also rated below William Henry Harrison who died after only a month in office – from March 4, 1841 to April 4, 1841.

Even Warren Harding, whose presidency was afflicted by the Teapot Dome corruption scandal and his dalliances with mistresses, rated higher than Trump at 39th.

Trump also “won” the most polarising President, ahead of Andrew Jackson who won the second position.

“Donald Trump is by far the most polarising of the ranked presidents,” poll authors Brandon Rottinghaus and Justin Vaughn wrote.

  • Only ‘popular movement’ can rescue Nigeria, says Obasanjo

Only ‘popular movement’ can rescue Nigeria, says Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said there is need for a popular movement to enthrone progressive leadership required to make Nigeria a great country in Africa. He said Nigeria has disappointed Africa in providing needed leadership in post-military era.

Although, the ex-president did not specifically mention any regime; he said the nation deserved a better leadership to enable it play front role in Africa’s socio-economic development. He said the only way out of the development quagmire in which the nation plunged is for the masses to form non-partisan “popular movement” that would serve as credible alternative to the current national leadership.

The former president spoke yesterday at the 15th Lecture and International Leadership Symposium with the theme: Leadership and Performance in Africa: The Challenge of the Continent’s Economic Competitiveness, organised by Centre for Value Leadership (CVL) in Muson Center, Onikan, Lagos. CVL is a leadership think-tank founded by Prof. Pat Utomi.

Obasanjo said: “The first generation of leaders in this country, whatever you say about them, gave us independence. They helped in the transition from colonial power to indigenous leadership. Within their knowledge, their experience and exposure, these first generation leaders did their best. But then, they made mistake, which led to the transition to the military era. Later, there was another transition to democracy.

“The nation has also witnessed transition from one civilian regime to another within a political party and from one political party to another. But, there is another important transition which the country requires right now; this is the transition to popular movement to give people credible alternatives. Until we are able to achieve this, we are not going anywhere.”

Obasanjo, who made a dramatic walk to the podium by removing his agbada (flowing gown), noted that Nigeria must appreciate and acknowledge its diversity if there must be socio-economic development. He said the much-talked-about development must be predicated on provision of key infrastructure to power the economy.

The ex-president also said security matter should not be politicised or treated as emotional issue, noting that insecurity does not recognise anyone’s emotion or cultural beliefs. Obasanjo said he disagreed with a statement credited to former United States (U.S.) President Barack Obama, who said Africa needed to build strong institutions and not strong men.

“I believe we need both strong institutions and strong leaders. If there are no strong leaders, we will not be able to build strong institutions. If strong institutions are established and our leaders are weak, those strong institutions will collapse,” Obasanjo said.

He warned the nation on the consequence of disparity in education across geopolitical zones, saying what could be worse than Boko Haram could arise if education gap is not bridged.

Obasanjo said Africa must get leadership, governance and development right before the continent could achieve real growth. He said Africa still lagged behind in economic growth because some leaders don’t understand basic principle of economics of demand and supply.

He said countries on the continent must share common prosperity to achieve accelerated development.

He said: “It is the height of stupidity if you think of yourself alone and you do think not other. In Africa, if Nigeria thinks of itself alone and does not think of the rest of Africa, it would be foolish.”

In his keynote speech, former Director of United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and a presidential candidate in Sierra Leone, Mr Kandeh Yumkella, said African leaders must manage demographic transition and invest in energy and infrastructure. He said education, skill acquisition and women empowerment must play key role in the continent’s development policies.
