    Baraje laments contractual mistakes

Coach Zachery Baraje has expressed his frustrations at the way local coaches jump at jobs without understanding their contracts.

“Mistakes do happen in life and making the right corrections is very important. I wouldn’t go to any club without sorting the contract details. I now have an intermediary who manages me so that simply means I wouldn’t run into jobs all by myself. Instead a manager, a professional who manages me will discuss and sort out terms,” Baraje told Goal.

“I have made a lot of mistakes, especially when it comes to contracts, that’s why club chairmen will confidently mess up one’s entitlement. In fact most coaches in Nigeria have made this mistake or are still in it.

“I was forced out of Akwa United because the chairman at the club at the time never liked me. Maurice Cooreman has been contacted even before I left so I had to leave immediately after the Federation Cup win in 2015.

“One thing that compels coaches to jump into jobs is the fear of losing it but what’s the benefit if you do that and end up broke, your employer fail to pay you? Unfortunately so, the coaches association isn’t organised and that has been a big disadvantage. I wish I could just share a word of advise with other coaches not to jump into a contract without a professional who’s meant to read through and interpret the details before you sign.”

Baraje: Why I left Plateau Utd

Zachary Baraje has disclosed that he resigned as Plateau United head coach after  a season in charge of the Jos side because of the frosty relationship he had with the management of the club last season.

Baraje informed on Tuesday that he had sent his resignation letter to the club’s office and that he does not want to elongate his stay with the Jos side after the management failed to open fresh contract talks with him at the end of the just concluded season and his unending feud with the management of the team headed by the General Manager, Pius Hemwan.

“I resigned as the coach of Plateau United and I don’t have any regret doing so,” Baraje told Goal.

“I was suspended last season because I voiced out that we needed to buy quality players to beef up our team and during my suspension, new players were recruited which helped the team to stay in the premier league.

“I can’t continue to work in that kind of atmosphere where my work is not appreciated. I need to seek another club apart from Plateau United.”

    Baraje dismisses NPFL twelfth spot

Plateau United head coach, Zachary Baraje has disputed the 12th position for his side in the out gone 2015/16 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

Baraje said it would amount to miscarriage of justice for the points to be shared between his side and Heartland based on the existing result before the match ended inconclusively.

“Of course, Plateau United would not have finished the season’s campaign on the 12th position on 49 points. That’s crude and unfair to us as it was public knowledge that the matchday 38 clash against Heartland in Jos was inconclusive. So how can anybody consider it fair to share the points based on the existing result (1-1) before the match ended abruptly.

“The fairest thing to do is either we were awarded the whole three points or the remaining minutes are played. We were not the one that abandoned the match and should not be wrongly punished for the sins of another person. I do not know how and where Heartland came up with the theory that they could savage a win against us in Jos after they allowed already demoted side, Ikorodu United to beat them right there at their backyard.

“I have not lost any match in Jos upon assumption as coach of the side. In the past 35 or 36 years in the coaching profession I have never been involved in the shady deal. The League Management Company (LMC) should quickly do the needful to correct the wrong impression because we will never accept the league table as stated that we finished the season on the 12th position on 49 points. A quick clarification is needed before the wrong position ascribed to us goes virile and that will be the greatest injustice of the out gone season,” said the former El Kanemi Warriors and Enyimba coach to supersport.com.

  • Baraje, Bashir are NPFL-LBA winners for July

Baraje, Bashir are NPFL-LBA winners for July

Plateau United coach, Zachary Baraje and Nasarawa United striker, Abdulrahman Bashir, have emerged as the Manager and Player for July in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) – League Bloggers Awards (LBA).

Baraje and Bashir were named among eight shortlists earlier this week by the LBA to compete for honours in the month of July.

The Plateau United trainer beat the trio of Kabiru Dogo of Nasarawa United, Imama Amapakabo of Enugu Rangers and FC Ifeanyiubah’s Rafael Everton to win the manager’s award for the month under review.

The Jos club under Baraje, especially since his return from suspension after an initial poor run of results at the start of the season, have moved out of the drop zone and the month of July was instrumental in achieving that feat as they lost just once at Lobi Stars. Baraje’s men notched up 10 points last month, a feat only equalled by Nasarawa United.

However, Baraje and his team did the job mostly on the road – winning at Abia Warriors and MFM FC – and also getting just a win and a draw against champions Enyimba and Akwa United respectively leaving his other contenders Amapakabo and Everton, who guided their teams to unbeaten run, with no chance to upstage his July performance with Plateau United in July.

In the player’s category, there was no doubt about the man who would claim the NPFL-LBA individual prize. Bashir was in the thick of things attacking-wise for Nasarawa United and his goals helped them win 10 points out of 15 available last month.

He scored a goal each in all five matches in July against Rivers United, 3SC, Sunshine Stars, Ikorodu United and El-Kanemi Warriors to fend off any sort of challenge from Plateau United goalkeeper, Danladi Isah, Fortune Omoniwari of Akwa United and Kingsley Eduwo of Lobi Stars.

The LBA will present Baraje and Bashir their awards on a later date.

Baraje calls MFM tough in NPFL loss

Plateau United head coach,  Zachary Baraje has spoken glowingly of Nigerian top-flight newcomers, Mountain of Fire Miracles Ministries (MFM) FC.

The Tin City side piped the Olukoya Boys 1-0 in Sunday’s Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) match day 29 clash at the Agege Township Stadium in Lagos.

Former Heartland and Kano Pillars hitman, Kabiru Umar scored the match winner to hand his side a vital away three points.

Baraje said tactical discipline proved decisive to hand his side the winner in the clash against difficult and great side, MFM FC.

“It’s a difficult match playing a quality side like Mountain of Fire Miracles Ministries (MFM) FC at their fortress in Agege, Lagos.

“MFM FC are not walkovers they put every pressure to even scores but did not yield the desired result because I told my wards to calm down, absorb the pressure and chance a counter.

“I used two weeks to prepare for the match at MFM FC because I know the quality in the side and the uphill task in the matchup.

“My wards are quite exciting and good and were tactically disciplined in the game.

“They played strictly to instruction so I can say that tactical discipline contributed greatly to the hard fought victory.

“Of course, we are gradually climbing out from the uncomfortable zone though not yet completely out of it.

“There is still work to be done as we have quality opposition in the remaining matches on the calendar.

“We just have to work even harder to consolidate on our recent successes and hopefully we will escape the drop,” said the former Akwa United and Enyimba coach to supersport.com.

The away win at MFM FC has upped the Jos landlords total earnings to 36 points, 12 adrift league leaders, Enugu Rangers.

Baraje makes United NPFL stay priority

Plateau United head coach, Zachary Baraje has said his topmost priority in the on-going top-flight is to steer the side away from relegation.

“I’m working very hard to get the side away from the relegation zone they are in at the moment. Although it’s becoming very clear almost on a minute basis with response of the players to instruction that we will survive the drop at the end of the day.

“However, we are not leaving any stone unturned to ensure we maintain and improve on the momentum. Part of the measures we are working on is to avoid the circumstance that usually leads to a late penalty awarded against us mostly on away matches.

“We play good football on the road but go ahead to lose due to some questionable calls on the referees which result in penalties. I know we prepare well for matches. I hope with better officiating we are sure to earn good results on the road that will speed up our climb out from the uncomfortable zone,” said the former Enyimba coach to supersport.com.

“Wikki Tourists are a hard and tough side, we overcome them because I specifically prepared my charges, too for the clash. The hard fought win is confidence building for us to confront Abia Warriors in their den in Umuahia next weekend,” said the former Akwa United coach.

Baraje stages comeback to Plateau Utd

Veteran coach, Zachary Baraje has returned to Plateau United and will lead the Jos side to Kano ahead of their weekend NPFL Match Day 19 tie against Pillars, SportingLife can confirm.

The acting General Manager of the club, Paul Henwam sanctioned the suspension of the former Enyimba and El Kanemi Warriors head coach, but in show of power tussle SportingLife was told that the Plateau State Commissioner for Youth and Sport Development, Danladi Mang has ordered his reinstatement.

Plateau United have almost concluded the process leading to the appointment of a new coach to replace Baraje when SportingLife was told that the commissioner got in touch with the acting GM of the club and told him that Baraje still remains his main person for the job and that he should resume work immediately.

Plateau unhappy at Baraje’s media outburst

The management of Plateau United has expressed dismay with club’s technical adviser, Zachary Baraje over his outburst in the media (not SportingLife) that he is not being given enough support to turn around the fortunes of the Jos side on their return to the top flight in the current campaign.

The acting General Manager of the club, Pius Hemwan in a statement signed by his club’s media officer, Albert Dakup wondered why coach Baraje would go to the media with such spurious allegation without discussing the issue with the management first.

Hemwan lamented that the club was not aware of the plans by the coach to bring in new players because he has not officially communicated the club on the matter.

He disclosed that insinuations by coach Baraje that the present crop of players most of whom delivered the premier league ticket are not good enough to compete in the elite division are baseless as he was given freehand to do his job including the recruitment of players without management interference.

The acting GM advised the technical adviser to concentrate on his job instead of engaging himself in unnecessary distraction which could derail the collective aspirations of the team.

The statement further challenged the coach to use his wealth of experience spanning over 30 years to work with the players on ground pending when the transfer window re-opens.

Hemwan reminded the coach that the three-match ultimatum given to him remained sacrosanct and he must therefore work towards achieving it or face the full wrath of the club management.

According to him, the management is working round the club to ensure that the need and the welfare of the team is taken care of and will not accept any act of sabotage.

Plateau United returned to the NPFL at the beginning of the season after a five-year absence and are currently occupying the 10th position on the league table with seven points from five matches and face Akwa United tonight in a NPFL Week 6 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

  • Baraje hints at more arrivals at Plateau Utd

Plateau United head coach, Zachary Baraje has hinted that the Jos side will be hoping to add few more players to their stable before the start of the new league season where they have a home tie against Niger Tornadoes.

Baraje left Akwa United at the end of last season after securing a Federation Cup title for them and after pitching his tent with the Jos side recently, he told SportingLife that  he is still looking for more quality players to shore up the team and also add quality to the ones in the team presently.

He said they have used their trip to Kaduna to re-assess the players in the Jos side and that instead of concentrating on the results they got during the pre season there they put their minds on creating a team that would be difficult to beat when the league starts.

  • Baraje: Akwa Utd did not treat me as a professional

Baraje: Akwa Utd did not treat me as a professional

Akwa United erstwhile head coach, Zachary Baraje has berated the decision of the Promise Keepers’ management led by Chairman, Akparawa Nse Ubeh for not contacting him that his services were not needed before announcing the appointment of Belgian Maurice Cooreman as his replacement.

Baraje said there was nothing wrong for Akwa United to appoint a new coach after the expiration of his season long contract with the club at the end of the Federation Cup final in Lagos on November 22nd which he led the team to win but that the chairman ought to have called him to tell him officially that his contract won’t be extended.

He said that he has no grudge with Akwa United and that he enjoyed the single season he signed with them but that with his over 30 years experience as a coach he ought to have been treated better after leading the club to lift the Federation Cup and also maintaining their topflight status at the end of last season.

“I don’t want words with the chairman but what I know is that I have been coaching for over 30 years now but he has only stayed for six months and he should have known that he ought to have done better with the way he approached my situation.

“I am not saying that I want to remain as coach of Akwa United by all costs but I should have been communicated first that my services are not needed before naming a new coach. I don’t have any problem with that and I have moved on and I’m hoping for the best,” Baraje told SportingLife.

Baraje said he wishes the club best in the CAF Confederation Cup quest and that he is presently studying the offers before him from other clubs to see the possibility of staying on in the elite division as coach.
