The Kano Non-Indigenous Youth Assembly (KNIYA) has urged Deputy Senate President Barau Jibril of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to contest the 2027 governorship election in the state.
The endorsement was made during the group’s Annual Meeting for the year 2025, held in the ancient city.
KNIYA General Secretary, Usman Abdullahi, said the meeting was convened to assess the political and socio-economic trajectory of Kano State since the last gubernatorial elections in 2023 and to chart a new course toward a more inclusive, responsive, and visionary leadership for the people of Kano.
Abdullahi said the group came to a unanimous resolution that the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) government under Governor Abba Yusuf has departed from the democratic ideals, progressive governance, and participatory development that the people of Kano so desperately yearn for.
The group said, unlike Abba Yusuf’s NNPP administration, a Barau APC government would work in line with the Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. It also endorsed Tinubu for the 2027 presidential poll.

“Kano, once a shining star of political maturity and grassroots development, has, under the current government, become a textbook example of administrative incompetence and a troubling erosion of democratic culture.
The Assembly laments the “glaring absence of youth-focused policies and the gross disengagement of government officials from the realities faced by the average Kano resident.”
Abdullahi said: “The non-Indigenous Nigerian group of various ethnic nationalities forms a huge voting bloc of the population that has always voted in a single file behind a candidate.
“We gave our votes to the NNPP during the last general election and true to their character, they have succeeded in alienating the non-indigenous group.
“The government of Abba Kabir Yusuf, rather than consolidate on the progress made by previous administrations, has embarked on a retrogressive trajectory.
“From demolitions that displaced thousands of traders and small business owners, the NNPP-led administration has failed us on all fronts.
“In view of the prevailing conditions and in our collective quest for a renewed and prosperous Kano, the Assembly has resolved to endorse the candidacy of the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau I. Jibril, to contest the 2027 Gubernatorial Election in the State,” Abdullahi said.
