    Bariga PDP stalwart, supporters defect to APC

    A prominent member of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bariga and former aspirant for Lagos State House of Assembly (Shomolu Constituency II), Azeez Ogunyemi Roman has officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). 

    Ogunyemi, a grassroots mobiliser, popularly known as Roman 6, met with the party leadership, supporters and other stakeholders of Bariga APC on Monday, September 15, marking a significant boost for the party. 

    Some of the prominent APC leaders in attendance were: Chairman, Bariga Local Council, Hon. Bukola Adedeji; APC LGA Chairman (Bariga), Hon. Mejolagbe; APC LGA Youth Leader, Alhaji Okeowo Nureni; Lijirin Ruth Ayomide (SSA to the Governor of Lagos State on Civic Engagement), Eight APC ward coordinators and secretaries; and others. 

    Ogunyemi noted that he, alongside his ecstatic large number of followers, decided to join forces with the ruling party to make it stronger and help make Bariga better. 

    Addressing party faithful and supporters, Ogunyemi cited the transformative leadership and developmental strides of the incumbent chairman, Hon. Bukola Adedeji Iyanuiwura as the driving force behind his move.

    Acknowledging his admiration for the leadership style of erstwhile chairman, Hon. Kolade Alabi, Ogunyemi expressed his approval of the APC’s efforts towards unifying Bariga residents. He also applauded the Lagos East Senatorial ambition of Hon. Alabi, describing it as a bold step. 

    Ogunyemi, reflected on his political history with the PDP, stating that despite contesting on the platform of the PDP in the 2023 elections as an House of Assembly contender, and Young Progressives Party (YPP) councillorship aspirant for Ward E, he now acknowledges the APC as the party that truly prioritises the welfare of the people and effectively manages their affairs.

    Ogunyemi said: “I’m happy to join the party today. This is a momentous occasion. I didn’t come alone, I’m standing here today with my supporters too especially members of Motor Dealers Association; Bariga artiste forum consisting of Content Creators, DJ, entertainers, and other vibrant youths.

    “My dedication to public service remains unwavering, and I am excited about the opportunities this new chapter will bring to amplify all efforts in addressing the pressing issues that matter to us all in Bariga Local Council”.

    Applauding Ogunyemi’s strategic move, Hon. Adedeji eulogised him for leading his teeming supporters and party faithful from PDP to APC. 

    She urged the new APC members to not only educate other members of PDP about the good things the APC government was doing in Bariga Local Council but also mobilise them to join the ruling party in Bariga.

    One of the highlights of the event was the symbolic presentation of the party’s broom to Ogunyemi and his teeming party supporters.

    Women including artisans, widows, others in Bariga Local Council on Monday June, 30th converged on the council’s conference centre, legislative complex for an interactive session ahead of the forthcoming local government election slated for Saturday, July 12, 2025 across the state.

    The event had in attendance: the First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Mrs. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu who was ably represented by Dr. Mrs. Grace Igbokwe (Member, COWLSO); the Royal Mother of the day, Olori Temitope Enitan-Ogunwusi; Hon. Jumoke Okoya-Thomas (APC Women Leader Lagos State and Member G.A.C).

    Others include: Hon. Barr. Saidat Olayinka (Former Commissioner, Lagos State), Hon. Olayinka Oladunjoye (Federal Commissioner, NPC), Hon Adeola Z. Kuponiyi (Vice Chairman, Bariga Local Council); Hon Temitope Okanlawon (Leader, Bariga Legislative Council); Hon Olufemi Apata MHA (Somolu II), Hon Orekoya, MHA Somolu I), Hon. Doyin Banjo (State Financial Secretary, APC).

    The gathering featured discussions centred on the aspiration of Hon. Bukola Omope Adedeji as the next Chairman of Bariga Local Council.

    The session also provided a platform for women leaders and the council’s candidates to engage with community women, market women, artisans, corporate workers, widows, CDC/CDAs and others.

    In her remarks, the Special Guest of Honour, Dr. Mrs. Grace Igbokwe, on behalf of the First Lady, harped on the importance of women’s empowerment and participation in leadership. She equally applauded Hon. Adedeji’s dedication to public service.

    The Chairman, Bariga Local Council, Hon Kolade Alabi in his remarks, outlined the success of the outgoing administration, emphasizing the inputs and contributions of Hon. Adedeji as well as the traits she possess.

    Alabi sought the continued support of the women’s constituency for Hon. Adedeji during and after the election.

    In her speech, Olori Enitan-Ogunwusi shared her testimonies about the personality of Hon Adedeji when they had the privilege of working together closely, firstly clearly expressing that the Royal family is apolitical, however, buttressing that it is imperative to attest to a good personality who ventures into politics when one sees one.

    She further posited that Bariga was indeed blessed to have Hon. Adedeji as the leading candidate, attesting to her diligence and hardworking attributes.

    Olori also seized the moment to extol Hon Alabi for his input in ensuring the emergence of Hon. Adedeji as his successor.

    Also speaking, Hon. Adedeji outlined her plans for improving the lives of residents, particularly women and children, through education, healthcare, and economic empowerment initiatives.

    The Iyalojas of Bariga, apex leaders in the community, the Party Chairman, Hon. Akin Mejolagbe, and other party executives were also in attendance at the event.

    Old students turn sod for ICT centre at 166

    CMS Grammar School, Bariga, Lagos, has celebrated its 166th year with the foundation of a N1.5 billion ICT Centre.

    The centre was named named after Prof. Samuel Adebonojo, 1954, retired U.S. colonel, and professor of surgery.

    The event:  “Ever Upward to the Light,” took place in the school and was organised by the Old Grammarians’ Society (OGS).

    The sod-turning  was led by Rt. Rev. Johnson Akinpelu, Bishop of Diocese of Lagos Mainland (Anglican Communion).

    The ICT Centre, funded by OGS chapters in Nigeria, U.S. and U.K. and named to honour Adebonojo’s vision and financial support, aims to equip pupils with skills in robotics, satellite engineering, artificial intelligence, and digital innovation.

    OGS President, Cyril Ogbekene, reflected on his leadership journey and the society’s achievements, including  constitutional amendment introducing online voting and financial transparency, growing reserves from under N1 million to over N20 million, and projects like upgraded site plan and OGS Secretariat.

    He also recognised alumni contributions, such as Mr. Modupe Alakija’s 350-bed boys’ hostel and Chief Folarin Coker’s Olympic-standard swimming pool.

    Bishop Akinpelu, during a thanksgiving service at the school’s Babington Macaulay Chapel, urged steadfast faith amid modern heresies, encouraging spiritual growth and resilience.

    He lauded CMS Grammar School’s legacy as the second oldest secondary school in West Africa.

    Prof. Adebonojo, serving as grand patron of the American and London OGS chapters, emphasized the importance of discipline, education, and giving back.

    He revealed the ICT centre idea was driven by the OGS overseas chapters, and pledged the school as a beneficiary in his will.

    OGS UK/Europe President, Mr. Mobolaji Lewis described the centre as a pioneering step to prepare students for a global digital future.

    Chairman of the Computerisation Committee of the ICT Centre, Mr. Tolu Agbesonwa, highlighted Prof. Adebonojo’s unique vision, a medical doctor with no formal tech background who conceived a solar-powered ICT centre.

    Immediate past president of OGS America, Mr. Akin Poopola underscored the extensive campus upgrades, including solar power, campus-wide Wi-Fi, ICT-ready classrooms, and improved infrastructure.

    He stressed the centre’s inclusive approach, training all students for tech entrepreneurship, not only those pursuing university education.

    The ICT Centre, expected to be completed within one to two years, symbolizes the alumni’s commitment to blending CMS Grammar School’s rich heritage with modern educational innovation.

    Founded in 1859, the school continues to nurture leaders, with alumni and clergy urging current students to uphold and advance its distinguished legacy.

    Bariga Local Council to get Road Maintenance Board, TV, others

    Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA) is set to establish Bariga Road Maintenance Board (BRMB), Bariga Television, Bariga Property Board amongst others.

    This was stated at a public hearing on the proposed review of 2021 Bye-laws and the formulation of new laws by the fifth legislative council.

    The event was held at the legislative building in the council secretariat, Bariga.

    Some of the proposed bills include Establishments of Corporations, Property Ventures, and other connected purposes; Establishment of Bariga TV and Establishment of Road Maintenance Board as amended by Bye-laws 2024 and others.

    Chairman of the council, Kolade Alabi, said that the bills were not aimed at stopping the old bills but to give the public the opportunity for inclusivity and create a record to help the decision makers.

    “It is historical and symbolic being the first time that Bariga will harmonise all Bye-laws both old and new into a booklet as legacy for others coming to learn,” he said.

    He added that BRMB would ensure sustainability of all road projects.

    Leader of the House, Temitope Okanlawon, appreciated the council boss for ensuring enabling and conducive environment for the legislators to perform their tasks.

    Okanlawon stressed that the Bye-laws will have in consideration, all inputs from members of the community.

    The All Progressives Congress (APC) Apex leader, Ademola Olisa, praised Alabi for the numerous projects and the support for the legislative arm in transforming Bariga.

     He also applauded the efforts of the legislative arm in increasing the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and lessening the load on allocation.

    “Any local government that aspires for great development can’t sustain itself through only the allocation,” he said.

    The Executive Chairman of Bariga local council, Hon. Kolade Alabi David, will on Thursday, September 5, disburse N25 million cash intervention fund to residents.

    The intervention fund is aimed at alleviating the economic hardship faced by residents.

    According to the 16-man Bariga intervention committee led by Segun Adesanya, 500 beneficiaries including vulnerable, petty traders, aged, and others will get N50,000 each.

    Eligible beneficiaries across the eight wards in Bariga have been identified and selected to benefit from phase III of the intervention programme.

    A statement signed by the Secretary, Dr. Kehinde Lawal reads: “Recall that in Phase I and Phase II respectively, Hon. Kolade Alabi disbursed cash intervention funds for residents across various wards in the community.

    “Also, other interventions such as health care schemes for pregnant women, and aged; food distribution for Christians and Muslims were also carried out.

    “Adesanya said: “500 beneficiaries will receive 50,000 naira each as an intervention to alleviate the hardship faced by our people. We identified all the beneficiaries per ward. The selection process which is fair and transparent prioritises people with disabilities, the aged, and the poorest of the poor in Bariga.”

    “It is noteworthy to stress that the Bariga Intervention Programme stands as a testament to the council’s commitment to supporting its residents amid the hardship and hunger faced by the vulnerable.

    “Hon. Kolade Alabi remains committed to providing conditional cash transfers, business grants, and other forms of support for the most vulnerable households in Bariga through the intervention programme.”

    The Executive Chairman of Bariga Local Council, Hon. Kolade Alabi David is set to distribute N25m cash intervention to Bariga indigent residents, petty traders, and market women in grand style for its second phase.

    A statement signed by the Secretary of the Bariga Intervention Committee, Dr. Kehinde Lawal, the programme will take place at the Council Secretariat Hall on Thursday, May 9, at 1:00 pm.

    The committee chairman, Segun Adesanya said: “Five hundred (500) Bariga residents selected across various wards (A-H) will get fifty thousand naira (N50,000) each which will be credited directly to their respective accounts and they will be issued a Providus Bank ATM card to that effect on Thursday, 9th of May, 2024. This will amount to 25million naira”

    “Recall in the first phase of the cash intervention on the 11th March 2024, 20 million Naira was disbursed to 1000 people in order to mitigate the impact of the nation’s economic difficulties and high cost of living.

    “So far, Hon. Alabi has reiterated his commitment with respect to renewing the hope of the masses by putting smiles on their faces until every household benefit from this intervention programme. His commitment to better the lives of his people is matchless.

    “Some of the laudable programmes which have been embarked upon by Hon. Kolade Alabi through the Bariga Intervention Committee include:

    – Medical Outreach for residents

    – Free Iftar for Muslim faithful during Ramadan

    -Three-Day Special Prayer/Welfare Programme for the Christians

    – Free Health Care Delivery Packs for pregnant women and many more initiatives.

    “So far, every street across Bariga Local Council has benefitted from the first phase of the exercise and other interventions; this second one will not be an exception. All arrangements have been perfectly done to make it a successful one. Access cards to the venue will be distributed to the beneficiaries in due course.”

    The Chairman, Bariga Local Council, Kolade Alabi, on Monday, disbursed N20 million intervention fund aimed at assisting residents in coping with the high cost of living.

    A 16-man committee led by Segun Adesanya selected about 1000 beneficiaries across the  wards to benefit from the intervention scheme.

    The event had in attendance: Vice Chairman Bariga Local Council, Zainot Adeola Kuponiyi, Leader of Bariga Legislative Arm Temitope Okanlawon, Council Manager Mrs Balogun and other council officials.

    Adesanya explained that 125 beneficiaries across eight wards in Bariga were selected to benefit from the intervention.

    He said: “We selected 1,000 beneficiaries to receive N20,000 each as an intervention to alleviate the hardship faced by our people. We identified 125 beneficiaries per ward.

    “The Bariga Intervention Programme stands as a testament to the council’s commitment to supporting its residents during challenging times,” he said.

     Alabi said: “This gathering is not a political gathering. It is devoid of the usual political songs, but this is a gathering of Bariga people. I give kudos to the committee members, for  a well organised project like this.

    “After this cash intervention, we are going to roll out yet another phase, the beneficiaries will also be brought to this same arena for the second phase. We are going to create a subsidised food market across the eight Wards in the LCDA, where food will be sold to Barigans at a subsidised amount.

    “There will be Health intervention Scheme for expectant women in Bariga, we are going to pay for their deliveries. We also have in the pipeline a health program tagged “Ilera Bariga” for 1000 people, they will be given a card to visit any hospital for free.

    “We are going to commence a daily food intervention across Bariga, local vendors will be selected, they would be mobilized to cater for 1000 people daily.

    “We are planning educational intervention in our 30 Primary Schools across Bariga, we are going to provide exercise books to the indigent students to support their parents.”

    The beneficiaries were full of praises. In their separate reactions, they appreciated Alabi for his sustained efforts at alleviating the sufferings of the masses.

    A resident, Mrs. Toyin Abegunde, lauded the council for inaugurating the Bariga Intervention Committee, describing it as a step in the right direction.

    The Lagos State Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) has organised a boat cruise to the Takwa Bay Island Beach as part of efforts to give the Bariga Jetty greater visibility.

    Tagged ‘Love Lagos Water Experience’, the cruise offered fun seekers, holiday makers and tourists the opportunity to enjoy Lagos’ stunning coastline and a memorable beach experience.

    Managing Director of LAGFERRY Abdoulbaq Ladi-Balogun said the initiative was to ensure the regular patronage of the magnificent terminal for daily commuting, tourists, revellers and adventurers.

    He said: “Our ‘Love Lagos Water Experience’ is to boost the interests of Lagosians in water transportation, not only as a reliable alternative mode of transportation, but significantly as a way of life. This deliberate effort is meant to showcase and popularise another wonderful piece of waterfront infrastructure in the Somolu-Bariga axis in ameliorating the adverse effects of road traffic congestion on the people.

    “The Bariga Waterfront Terminal comes with adequate security, restaurants, conveniences, ample car park facilities, and can be connected through well constructed roads via First and Last Mile Buses. Passengers can board LAGFERRY boats from Bariga Terminal to CMS/Marina, Falomo-Ikoyi, Lekki, Victoria Island, Ebute Ero, Ikorodu, Badagry, Apapa, Mile 2, Badore-Ajah and also charter boats to the beaches and resorts of Takwa Bay, Ilashe, Ibeshe etc.”

    Balogun added that the water experience was also aimed at changing the lifestyle of Lagosians to achieve work-life balance by creating time for relaxation, adventures, wellbeing and beautiful exploration of coastal assets through effective collaborations with beaches/resorts, such as Jara at Epe, LaCampaigne Tropicana at Ibeju Lekki, Ilashe and Ibeshe Islands at Oriade, Sanctuary at Badagry, Takwa Bay at Iru/Victoria Island, Ajala.ng, Reminiscence, Mode Partners, Goge Africa, among other private tours and tourism promoters.

    The water experience is planned to take place every other weekends.

    Baale-in-Council okays Ayetiwa as Oba of Bariga

    Twelve traditional rulers in Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Lagos State, have endorsed a real estate expert, High Chief Kayode Ayetiwa, as the monarch for the stool of Oba of Bariga.

    Ayetiwa, the current Baale of Ilaje community in Bariga, was nominated during a monthly meeting held on Tuesday by the traditional rulers at the secretariat of Bariga LCDA.

    The meeting was attended by elders of the community, principal members, youths and community members, who also supported the decision reached by the monarchs.

    The traditional rulers, who are Baales of the 12 communities in the LCDA, said Chief Ayetiwa was their preferred candidate and that he should be installed as the monarch for Bariga kingdom.

    The representative of the Baales, Chief Wasiu Aro Jinadu, the Baale of Abule-Okuta; stressed that Ayetiwa’s selection was a unanimous decision of the royal fathers in Bariga Kingdom and that the name was picked while scrutinising all candidates shortlisted to assume the throne.

    “We, the 12 Baales in the LCDA, at our monthly meetings, have endorsed Chief Ayetiwa to be our king in Bariga, because he is very capable. He was born, bred and brought up in Bariga. All his businesses are in Bariga and he has the power to run the Obaship in this town successfully.”

    It took the heroics of top striker, Benjamin Friday, to net the only goal of the final match for Bariga FC to emerge champions of the Lagos Mainland Conference Digital Bridge Institute winner in the 1XBET Community Football Championships.

    The Bariga FC on Tuesday came out on top as winners of Group B, and in yesterday’s  Conference final, defeated Group A winners, 1-0 to emerge the first grand finale qualifiers for Main 1XBET Community Football Championships.

    The General Coordinator of the Championship, Waidi Akanni, said the train of the championship will now move to the Epe Conference, before the trip to Badagry, Ikorodu and the Lagos Island Conference, where one winner each will emerge, before the main tournament at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.
