Baraje, Bashir are NPFL-LBA winners for July

Plateau United coach, Zachary Baraje and Nasarawa United striker, Abdulrahman Bashir, have emerged as the Manager and Player for July in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) – League Bloggers Awards (LBA).

Baraje and Bashir were named among eight shortlists earlier this week by the LBA to compete for honours in the month of July.

The Plateau United trainer beat the trio of Kabiru Dogo of Nasarawa United, Imama Amapakabo of Enugu Rangers and FC Ifeanyiubah’s Rafael Everton to win the manager’s award for the month under review.

The Jos club under Baraje, especially since his return from suspension after an initial poor run of results at the start of the season, have moved out of the drop zone and the month of July was instrumental in achieving that feat as they lost just once at Lobi Stars. Baraje’s men notched up 10 points last month, a feat only equalled by Nasarawa United.

However, Baraje and his team did the job mostly on the road – winning at Abia Warriors and MFM FC – and also getting just a win and a draw against champions Enyimba and Akwa United respectively leaving his other contenders Amapakabo and Everton, who guided their teams to unbeaten run, with no chance to upstage his July performance with Plateau United in July.

In the player’s category, there was no doubt about the man who would claim the NPFL-LBA individual prize. Bashir was in the thick of things attacking-wise for Nasarawa United and his goals helped them win 10 points out of 15 available last month.

He scored a goal each in all five matches in July against Rivers United, 3SC, Sunshine Stars, Ikorodu United and El-Kanemi Warriors to fend off any sort of challenge from Plateau United goalkeeper, Danladi Isah, Fortune Omoniwari of Akwa United and Kingsley Eduwo of Lobi Stars.

The LBA will present Baraje and Bashir their awards on a later date.

Bashir gutted not on NPFL All-Stars final squad

The hottest striker in the Nigeria league on current form, Abdulrahman Bashir has admitted he was disappointed he did not make the final cut for the NPFL All-Stars squad to Spain next month.

On Saturday, Abdulrahman fired his seventh goal in as many games for Nasarawa United against El Kanemi Warriors and now has 13 goals, just one short of the league’s leading scorer, Godwin Obaje.

“I give thanks to God that I was called up by the NPFL All-Stars in the first place, but I was disappointed I did not eventually make the final squad to travel to Spain,” the former Enyimba and ABS FC striker told AfricanFootball.com.

“My attention is now shifted to finishing as top scorer in the league and also helping my club to win the Federation Cup.”

Abdulrahman Bashir was the match winner as hosts Nasarawa United stopped Rivers United 1-0 in a Nigeria league Saturday.

The home win catapulted Nasarawa from 14th position to seventh on the table with 33 points from 24 matches, while Rivers United remain in third place on 38 points.

Former Enyimba striker Bashir scored on the hour to give the Lafia club all three points at stake in this encounter. He jabbed home a cross to make hay. It was his ninth goal of the season.

Former ABS FC striker, Abdulrahman Bashir, has found a new home at Nasarawa United after making the move from Makurdi-based side Lobi Stars.

Bashir, who was one of the hottest commodities in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) two years ago, has switched to his third club in three years as he seeks to regain his scoring form.

He was a revelation at ABS alongside Lordson Ichull which saw him earn a dream move to Enyimba.

That adventure did not pan out well for the striker and he was soon off to Lobi Stars, where despite an initial good start, he failed to hit the limelight again.

Bashir told supersport.com that he is happy with his move to Nasarawa United and hopes to be back at his best at the Lafia side.

“Yes, it’s true I have moved to Lafia to team up with Nasarawa United.I believe it’s a good move for me to choose Nasarawa United as my new club,” he said.

“I have met some fantastic players and I’m enjoying our pre-season camping in Ilorin which you know was my former base. I had loads of fond memories here.

“Apart from that, the main factor was the fact that I will get to play continental football with the team.

“Every player’s dream is to play against the best in Africa and I’m no different. It was a big factor towards coming here. Insha Allah we shall do well.

“I already like what I see here and I’m adapting already so the signs are positive so far.”

When asked about his reasons for moving to Lafia despite rumoured interest from other NPFL sides, Bashir said the lure of continental football played a huge part in his choice.

“I had a couple of offers but I’ve always liked Nasarawa United and how they play. They are an attacking side which I think can help get back to my goal scoring ways,” he said.

Nasarawa United will represent Nigeria in the 2016 CAF Confederation Cup after placing third on the 2014/15 NPFL log with 63 points from 38 matches.

    Bashir set for ABS exit

ABS striker, Abdulrahman Bashir, will not play any role for the relegated Ilorin side in the Nigeria National League (NNL) when the new season resumes.

Since his fantastic debut during the 2010/11 season, Bashir, who is described as the “Soul” of the club considering his position as a founding member, has remained a target of several top clubs.

Bashir holds a record of 62 goals (in the amateur and professional class) for the club.

“I’m heading for the exit and it’s obvious I’ll play for a Premier League side, next term. I’ve enjoyed my time at ABS.

“I’ll have a discussion with the club’s hierachy,” Bashir told SuperSport.com.

Bashir and club captain, Fade Adebayo, are the only players in the top flight, who played in the amateur and professional cadre for the same team.

ABS rejected offers from Kano Pillars to lure him last season.

SuperSport.com learnt that the trio of Enyimba, Bayelsa United and Sharks have made serious enquiries about the availability of the attacker.

However, Enyimba and Bayelsa appear likely destinations because Bashir will get the chance of playing continental football.

Bashir leaves Nigeria, ICC demands arrest

Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir has left Nigeria, where his presence at a one-day African Union HIV/AIDS summit defied International Criminal Court (ICC) calls for his arrest on charges of genocide and war crimes, officials told Reuters on Tuesday.

His press secretary and Nigerian hosts both denied reports in the local media that he had left early fearing arrest.

Monday’s summit lasted one day and Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn was the only African leader who stayed on until Tuesday, an official at a breakfast for them at the presidency that morning said.

“President Bashir returned normally to Khartoum after participating in the summit in Abuja to resume his work in Khartoum,” his press secretary Emad Said told Reuters.

Bashir, who is accused of masterminding genocide and other crimes during the conflict in Sudan’s Darfur region in which some 200,000 people were killed, arrived in Nigeria on Sunday, to the chagrin of human rights campaigners.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch and the British government both expressed dismay at the decision to let him in, and a local activist group filed a court petition demanding his arrest, in line with Nigeria’s obligations under the ICC treaty.

The ICC’s pre-trial chamber said on Tuesday it had asked Nigeria to arrest Bashir and hand him to the ICC the day before.

The African Union voted in 2009 not to cooperate with the ICC indictments against Bashir. Nigeria’s presidency says its decision to allow him in was in keeping with that decision.

African enthusiasm for the court has waned over the years, partly owing to a perception that prosecutors disproportionately target African leaders, a charge the ICC denies.
