  • ‘We don’t have IDPs Camps in Bauchi’

The Bauchi State Government has debunked report saying Internally Displaced Persons are feeding on onion leafs to survive in one of the IDP camps in the state.

The refutal was issued on the heels of the report published by an online medium in Bauchi on the 21st April, 2019 publication captioned: “Hunger compels children in Bauchi IDP camp feed on onion leaves.

The online medium had reported that there was intense hunger as a result of inadequacy of food items in an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in the outskirts of Bauchi, which has forced adolescent children to feed on onion leaves for survival.

Addressing newsmen in Bauchi on Monday, the Director Relief and Rehabilitation for the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Kabiru Yusuf Kobi, said there were no more IDPs in the state saying all IDPs were initially relocated to host communities since the era of insurgency. He mentioned one of the host communities as Runde -bin.

He explained that the insurgency which spread to Borno State has emigrated most people from their ancestral homes. As a result, Bauchi state has had to deal with 2,000 unregistered IDP camps.

He said the IDPs who were majorly from Maiduguri were hired by the wife of a former head of state Maryam Abacha to work on her farmlands in Bauchi before they decided to make it a dwelling place.

He added that the state had to accommodate them out of humanitarian feelings as they had nowhere else to go.

Kabiru said though, the Government is in the process of helping them, there have been several intervention from Non-Governmental organizations to help the so-called IDPs. He listed one of the organization as the Presidential Committee on North East Initiatives, PCNI, who has donated several relief materials.

“We read a report that IDPs eat onion leaves in Bauchi. That’s not true, they don’t eat onion leaves.  First, we don’t have an IDP camp in Bauchi. When they came to our state, we told them that we couldn’t camp them because we didn’t have the resources to accommodate them. But they chose to stay and farm.

“They called and got a large piece of land from Mariam Abacha, who happens to be their sister, and they have been farming there since last year. They are not our responsibility, but because we are humans, we are looking at how to integrate them into our communities,” he said.

Corroborating Yusuf statement, the Chairman of IDPs in the state, Buba Musa Shehu, said the IDPs which came initially from Maiduguri were hired by Maryam Abacha before they decided to make the state a dwelling place.

He added further that the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, came from Gombe to access their situation last year.

Musa debunked the purported report as false saying it is not true that they were feeding on onion leaves because aid is been extended to them.

The disclosure followed the petition filed yesterday by the outgoing governor, Mohammad Abubakar, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bauchi State challenging his victory in court at the last governorship election.

Addressing journalists shortly after the submission of the petition yesterday at the tribunal, the APC Chairman, Uba Ahmed Nana, said   Abubakar, the gubernatorial candidate of the party at the last election, is seeking justice from the court.

I want to use this opportunity to thank my supporters and the people of Bauchi for their show of patience. The petition is nothing to worry about because we have taken necessary measures.”

“Though we have not been served, once we are served and we see the details, we are going to respond.

“We are also going to engage our lawyers, about five Senior Advocates of Nigeria, about ten other senior lawyers and 50 Bauchi indigenous lawyers. • Gov Abubakar tipped for Bauchi’s ministerial slot

Outgoing Governor Mohammad Abubakar has been tipped to be the next minister from Bauchi State, the Nation has learnt.

The national leadership of the All Progressive Congress (APC) might be hatching a plan B if things fall apart and the governor loses again at the Election Petition Tribunal.

An APC chieftain in Bauchi State, who spoke in confidence with the Nation Correspondent, said: “It is natural that the Governor is compensated with a ministerial appointment having worked hard for the party in the state and singlehandedly facing formidable forces in the Peoples Democratic Party in the State.”

The source dismissed any chances of the PDP in the state producing a minister from Bauchi state, saying they stand no chance considering the hard times they gave the governor.

“PDP cannot produce a minister from Bauchi state. They gave the governor a tough time in the state. The governor will face no challenge if speculation turns out positive.

“Even the Speaker, Federal House of Representatives cannot influence a minister from the PDP considering his position as an opposition member and he is also not in good terms with the President

“Stakeholders have been urging the President to give governor Abubakar a ministerial appointment and the governor has not come out to say he is not interested.”

The source added: “There has been no negative response from him considering the call for him to be made a minister. We can take it that he is ready to serve as minister”

When asked if the governor already lost all hope of reclaiming his mandate, the source said: “Having congratulated the governor -elect in the state, the governor initially has no motive of challenging the PDP’s victory at the court but having briefed the party hierarchy, they had taken it upon themselves to challenge the victory of PDP.”

Declaring the winner of the poll, the returning officer Prof. Mohammed Kyari, a Vice Chancellor of the Modibbo Adama University of Technology Yola, said that after merging the final results, the APC candidate polled  515,113 votes while his close rival Governor  Mohammed Abubakar of the All Progressive Congress scored 500,625  votes.

“I professor Mohammed Kyari certified as the returning officer of the March 9, March  23 and March  25 2019, governorship election in Bauchi state hereby announced that  Bala Abdulkadir  Mohammed having satisfied the requirement of the law and scored the highest number of votes is hereby declared the winner and returned reelected,” He said.

He said that the total number of the registered voters at the Guber poll were 2,462, 843, the accredited voters; 1,143,019 The total valid votes cast stood at 1,111,406 while rejected votes are 22, 560. Those who cast their ballot were 1,133,966

He added that the PDP candidate defeated his opponent with 14, 488 votes.

Ali Pate of the Peoples Redemption Party polled 46, 326 votes while Ahmed Adamu Shuaibu of New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP followed respectively with 33, 339 votes.

Earlier, during the March 9 inconclusive election, Mohammed was credited with 469,512 votes and Abubakar 465,453, with a vote margin of 4059 but the election was declared inconclusive after  the total number of votes cancelled during March 9 election was more than the margin between the PDP candidate, who was leading with  votes and that of the APC candidate.

At the second ballot, Sen. Bala Mohammed PDP, garnered a total of 6376 votes against his main opponent, incumbent Governor Mohammed Abubakar who polled 5117 votes at the rerun, with a vote margin of 1259 between both parties.

The total number of registered voters at the rerun was 22,759. Accredited voters are 12, 109, Valid votes, 11, 568 while total votes cast are 11, 979. Rejected votes, 403.

The rerun election was held in 36 Polling covering 29 registration areas (wards) in 15 affected local government areas.

INEC had declared the first ballot inconclusive on the grounds that the number of cancelled votes was higher than the margin of lead between the two top political parties.

The electoral body later announced that it would resume collation when it found out that the number of cancelled votes was tampered with, a decision Abubakar and the APC challenged in court.

Consequently, the  Federal High Court sitting in Abuja barred the Commission (INEC) from collation of result of the governorship election of March 9 in Bauchi State in an order given by Justice Inyang Ekwo on Tuesday following an ex parte application filed APC and the incumbent governor of the state, Mohammed Abubakar.

INEC  on Monday  resumed the collation of the results of the election from Tafawa Balewa Local government area which process was halted last week on the ground of  the Court Order restraining the commission , as the  Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday later  gave the  Commission the leeway to continue and conclude the collation of the results of the March 9 , 2019 governorship election in the Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The  Federal High Court in Abuja clearly dismissed the suit filed by the Governor of Bauchi State, Mohammed Abubakar and the All Progressives Congress (APC) challenging the decision by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to resume collation exercise in the state’s gubernatorial election.

In a judgment delivered by Justice Inyang Ekwo.

Justice Ekwo set aside the order for maintenance of status quo earlier made by the court and ordered INEC to proceed with its activities geared at concluding the governorship election in Bauchi State.

The result for Tafawa Balewa LGA, a stronghold of the PDP was initially cancelled when the  Collation Officer, Mrs Dominion Anosike alleged she was  under pressure from Party Agents who could not wait for the arrival of a replacement result sheet and decided to collate the result on an available RA result sheet instead of the replacement LGA result sheet.

Apparently, the Returning Officer, Mohammed Kyari, rejected the regenerated result because it was on a wrong result sheet during her presentation at the State Governorship Collation Centre which led to the declaration of the first ballot inconclusive.

Meanwhile, the incumbent governor, Mohammed Abubakar has congratulated the governor-elect.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Strategy Ali.M.Ali.He said,

“I congratulate my brother, Sen Bala on this victory at the polls.

“I am delighted to note that in-spite of the intensity of the campaigns in our dear state, a peaceful election took place without bloodshed.
