Bauchi gov receives 39 abducted victims rescued from bandits

Bauchi governor, Bala Mohammed, has met with the 39 victims of recent kidnapping in the Alkaleri Local Government Area of the State.

He was accompanied by the state Commissioner of Police, Auwal Musa Mohammed, and other Heads of Security agencies.

Nation recalls that Alkaleri where the State governor hails from has not been spared of the terror unleashed by bandits in some parts of the state.

While receiving the victims in Yelwan Dulguri, his hometown on Sunday, September 17,  Mohammed announced the temporary forfeiture of his monthly salary to support security agencies in the war against activities of bandits.

He warned that anyone found compromising or caught assisting the bandits would be treated and given the worst punishment than them.

He stated: “With this, I have pledged my salary and allowance to my hometown for the time being for the use of all the vigilantes and other security operatives in the area in the fight against the bandits. Monthly, I will be giving N2 million to the two districts.

He further explained: “We are going to give the money, N10 million to about 200 vigilante and security agencies that went and rescued these people. Even the rescued are not forgotten, I give them N2 million.”

The governor also donated 50 motorcycles to help the local vigilante and other security operatives in the area fight insecurity in Alkaleri.

He commended the concerted effort of the police, the Joint State Task Force comprising of the Civil Defence, the Nigerian Army, and the local hunters.

He warned traditional leaders to avoid conspiracy and compromise, adding that the bandits seemed to have informants in their midst.

“These bandits are coming in and sometimes they have fertile ground from people that are around. We are working with the security agencies to bring CIDs who would be going into the villages to find out those people that are conniving with the bandits because they are worse than the bandits”, the Governor declared.

“We are not going to allow anybody to come and drive us away from our ancestral land and other preoccupation, we would rather sacrifice our lives to ensure that we protect ourselves, and this is what is called Community engagement or policing.”

The governor who read the riot act on the activities of criminals in the state, declared that, henceforth, “there is no hiding place for criminals and bandits anywhere in the state.”

Bauchi reviews salaries of traditional rulers

Bauchi State Governor, Sen. Bala Mohammed has promised to review the salaries of all District and Village heads in the state.

According to the governor, the decision to review the salary and allowances of all traditional rulers in the Emirate Council is to keep their eyes off the delicacies from bandits intending to lure or make them compromise.

Mohammed added that his administration would also make sure traditional institutions have befitting accommodation and transportation allowances.

The Nation reports that several cases of kidnapping have been recorded in parts of the state in recent times.

As a result of the development, peasant farmers, who are mostly affected, are now afraid of going to their farms.

The governor made the announcement when he received Council of Traditional Rulers at the Government House in Bauchi yesterday.

Mohammed said: “You have been managing our limitations and inadequacies as a government to provide for you, and, that is why when we came, we were building from where our predecessors have left off in terms of making sure that you have befitting accommodation, good transportation, and good remuneration.

“I understand to my chagrin, that some of the benefits that should come to you as per law, we were not doing it as a state, that is in terms of the sharing formula of the percentage of what is going to the local governments to you,” he said.

The Governor added: “It was not just done deliberately by us, we inherited it and we continued with it, we didn’t know until my eyes opened and I saw that you were being cheated and I said that it should be reversed, we have just started.

“The authors of that law knew that you have a lot of responsibilities because as Royal Fathers, you are not only taking care of yourselves, you are taking care of the Emirates and the communities and the community of royal fathers; the royal family whose needs are so vast and varied and they are huge.

“Therefore, you need a lot of resources to be able to keep them in the form and content of royalty that is expected of them. The royalty that is supposed to be exuded by them must be maintained by you and because you have been doing it over the years.

“So, I assure you that the sharing formula has been corrected and it will continue that way. We will also look at the salary structure of the District Heads and the Village Heads so that we can make it better for them to discharge their royal duties.

“This is to keep their eyes off the goodies of the bandits and other unwholesome elements that are coming to lure them to make them compromise.”

Earlier speaking on behalf of the delegation, the Emir of Katagum, Alhaji Umar Farouq II, applauded Mohammed’s foresight and commitment to reviving the glory of traditional rulers and institutions.

He emphasised the importance of collaboration between the institutions and stakeholders for the enhancement of Nigeria’s security and providing succour to the citizenry.
