  • Buhari to Theresa May: 2019 Election will be free, fair, credible

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday in Abuja assured the United Kingdom (UK) Prime Minister, Theresa May of his commitment to conducting free, fair and credible elections in 2019.

He made the remark during a bilateral meeting with the visiting Prime Minister at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

President Buhari, according to a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and publicity, Femi Adesina, welcomed UK’s support at strengthening democratic institutions in the country.

He said ‘‘I assure you that I’m all out for free, fair and credible elections. I’m very pleased that my party is doing very well. The High Commissioner will brief you more. The recent successes in polls in Katsina, Bauchi, and Kogi have boosted our morale greatly.

‘‘Nigeria has accepted multiparty democracy and that is putting politicians on their toes, forcing them to work harder,’’ he said.

On the anti-corruption campaign, the President applauded the British support to the country, noting that the success of the fight was very important to ordinary people in the country.

He went on “We had great opportunities and resources between 1999 and 2014, due to high oil prices. But when we came in 2015, oil prices plunged to as low as 37 dollars per barrel.

‘‘What we have been doing since 2015 is to focus on infrastructure development, despite low earnings. Work is ongoing in roads, rail, power, and many others.”

On Brexit, President Buhari noted that it provides an opportunity to strengthen the historic ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

‘‘I am very grateful to the British government under you leadership for the help in security, particularly your training team that is in our institution in Kaduna,’’ he said.

Speaking earlier before the bilateral meeting, the Nigerian leader underscored the need for UK support on reviving of Lake Chad, which is a means of livelihood for millions of people.

The President told the visiting Prime Minister that Europe and China were already conducting an in-depth study on recharging the Lake through inter-basin transfer from the Central African Republic.

In her remarks, Prime Minister Theresa May, who welcomed the assurance by the Nigerian government on credible elections in 2019, said she was pleased to be in Abuja to continue the ‘‘excellent discussions’’ she started with President Buhari in London in April, this year, particularly on security, trade, asset recovery and the fight against corruption.

‘‘Security and defence cooperation are very important steps to address Boko Haram and Islamic State in West Africa,’’ May said.

On asset recovery, the Prime Minister told President Buhari: ‘‘We do not want to hold anything that belongs to Nigeria people, but we follow the judicial process, which can be slow.’’

The Prime Minister appealed to President Buhari to use his position as ECOWAS Chair to keep the issue of human trafficking on the front burner in the sub-region.

President Buhari and Prime Minister May witnessed the signing of two agreements: Security and Defence Partnership and Economic Development Forum Agreement.

  • Recent APC victory is sign of things to come -Buhari

…Says APC will win 2019 elections

President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura on Friday said that the string of victory recorded by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in bye-elections in Bauchi, Katsina and Kogi States is sufficient proof that 2019 elections will be won by the party.

He spoke while receiving the representatives of the 34 Chairmen of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Katsina State.

Buhari, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, said: “coming against the backdrop of the victory in Ekiti governorship election, the string of victory by our party, the APC, is a clear indication of the way things will go in 2019.

‘‘For those who are discerning; those who have ears and eyes they will see, hear and understand. Those who don’t understand are entitled to their mistaken assumptions.” he said

Buhari, therefore, emphasized that the victories in the recent polls are indeed “the sign of things to come.”

He thanked the leaders of the association for paying Sallah homage to him and for their message of congratulations on the performance of the party and the administration, assuring them that he would continue to do his best for the nation.

Speaking on behalf of the members, the Chairman of ALGON in the State, Alhaji Mohammed Na’Allah, expressed their support and commitment to the success of the Buhari Administration.

At another meeting with the leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Katsina State, President Buhari expressed his continued determination to respect the diversity of the country, saying that he will run a government that is fair and just to all Nigerians.

The President thanked the CAN leadership in the State for living in peace and harmony with other religious groups, and for supporting his administration in its policies and programmes

The CAN leaders who spoke during the visit, the State Chairman, Rev. Nelson Onyeakachukwu, and an elder and coordinator of the Christian Pilgrimage in the State, Haruna Danjuma expressed happiness with the President’s performance.

They described him as the State’s good ambassador who had made everyone proud.

“Christians in Katsina are happy with both Governor Masari in the State and yourself at the center. We will continue to support both of you,” the CAN leaders told the President.

  • Bauchi, Katsina, Kogi: APC waxing stronger, says Presidency

The Presidency is celebrating the victories of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in last weekend’s election.

The APC won senatorial bye-elections in Katsina and Bauchi states and a House of Representatives seat in Kogi State.

Briefing State House correspondents, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, described the victories as an indication that President Muhammadu Buhari and Acting President Yemi Osinbajo have a better chance in next year’s election.

He also faulted the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for carrying out its actions in a militant manner rather than following laid down procedures.

Shehu said: “I like to speak to you about the fabulous shows of the APC in Katsina, Bauchi and Kogi, and even to some extent in Cross River states. All of these coming against the background of Ekiti State.

“It is clear that from election after election, Nigerians are reposing confidence in the Buhari/Osinbajo presidency. Each of these election victories is considered to be epic in nature because none of these elections was an ordinary election.

“We are happy that we have won and on behalf of the President and the Acting President, we’ll like to say thank you to Nigerians who continue to repose their confidence in the leadership of the APC administration.

“We also want to thank the leadership of the party at the national level, but equally important, to thank all the party’s apparatchiks deployed to all the campaigns who ensured that all the elections were won handsomely by APC.

“So, we are expressing our gratitude to everyone for these that had happened and to say that with this increasing confidence reposed in the President and the Acting President, who are determined more than ever before to leave no stone unturned in order to bring the promised change to Nigerians.”

“For a quick review, maybe one, two, three or four lessons can be taken from the victories that the party has been recording.

“First of all is to say that these decisive victories are indications that clearly, Nigerians have spoken that President Buhari maintains his momentum. That these victories place Buhari/Osinbajo presidency in very good stead for next year’s election.” he added

Advising the National Assembly, Shehu said: “It is a statement of the fact that the APC will go into election next year with every confidence that the elections will be won and that Nigerians, by this statement, will also  say that they no longer have time for politics of insult and diversion, mudslinging and ‘monkey dey work, baboon dey chop’ politics of the PDP, and equally important is that these election victories are a clear message to the National Assembly that all that Nigerians are interested in is that the business of government should go on.

“That Nigerians are saying that they are not interested in the drama; they are not interested in the grammar, the subterfuge and all of the games that are being played in the National Assembly.

“I think it is appropriate this time to appeal to the National Assembly to be on the same page with the President Muhammadu Buhari administration so that we can deliver on all of these things. There are urgent matters that need to be attended to, including matters of shortfall in money supply for the execution of the budget.”

Urging the opposition party to desist from operating like a militant organisation, Shehu said: “Secondly, I think that it is not the right attitude for a political party, a so-called opposition leader to conduct their affairs like a militant organisation , a political party cannot be run like a militant organization. If you have disagreement on the outcome of an election, they know the process and they know it because they abused it before. You can see this is the clear difference of the kind of democracy the APC administration is trying to put in place from what they are used to.

“Willie Obiano of Anambra, same afternoon President Buhari said congratulations and welldone, we were happy we came second in the elections, that is the way it is. We lost a Senate seat in Osun, we didn’t try to bring down the roof, and this that has happened in Cross River, did you hear Adams Oshiomhole say he wanted to shoot people? I think this is the difference we need.”

Shehu also charged Nigerians who are raising allegations of votes buying during the bye-elections to help the law enforcement agencies with the information.

“One is to say that bribery of voters or vote buying is an offence in this country, I think that citizens who have evidence regarding this have a duty to report to the law enforcement agencies. This is the way to help the country,” Shehu said.

The APC also in a statement by its acting publicity secretary Yekini Nabena, said: “The hat-trick victories following weekend’s by-elections for Katsina North; Bauchi South Senatorial seats and the Lokoja/Kogi Federal Constituency House of Representatives seat have again powerfully demonstrated the confidence and trust by our people in the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

“While we thank the electorate for coming out enmasse to vote for our candidates in the weekend by-elections, we also congratulate Hon. Ahmed Babba-Kaita (Katsina); Hon. Lawal Yahaya Gumau (Bauchi) and Haruna Isa (Kogi) on their victories.

“Since assuming office, President Buhari has demonstrated the political will and remains solidly committed to the task of building a new Nigeria in line with the Change Agenda we promised to the electorate and the progressive ideals we stand for.

“As a political party, we remain genuinely committed to address our challenges, reconcile legitimately aggrieved interests and emerge as a more united and stronger political fighting force as we face General Elections in 2019.

“Like every other country, we have our challenges, but they are surmountable. We have an administration working day and night to surmount them and put the country on the right pedestal. With the continued cooperation and support of Nigerians, we have good reason to look forward to the future with great hope.”

Dogara is estranged with the APC but he is yet to defect from the party. With the outcome of the by-election, APC in Bauchi now has only one senator because the other two – Isa Misau and Nazif Gamawa – formerly of the APC, have defected to the PDP.

The APC candidate Alhaji Haruna Isah won the Lokoja/Kogi House of Representatives by-election.

Returning Officer Prof. Rotimi Ajayi, said Isah polled 26, 860 votes to defeat Alhaji Bashir Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 14, 845 votes.

  • Bauchi: A year in the corridors of power

Time flies fast. It is incredible how it flutters. It has been a year since I started walking   with Governor MA Abubakar of Bauchi State. August 1 precisely marked a year since I left my comfort zone in the newsroom where I was lord of the manor. Where I was a tin footed ‘god’ with wide ranging ‘editorial’ and  “managerial’ powers. Where, as Editor-in-Chief, I decided what story got prominence and or obscurity. Where, as a columnist, with   a ‘pungent’ pen wrote  ‘acidic’ commentaries on politics and politicians and   was  “celebrated” as  “daring”, and “fearless” for telling truth to power.

I left all those “powers” to be in   its “corridor” strewn with banana peels. Some curves in this hallway are, actually, strewn with land mines buried deep underneath. One wrong step, you may be blown to smithereens. I have stepped on several. I have been blown to pieces severally. And the boss has given me cover severally! That’s lesson number one. The boss gives you a second, third, fourth chance. Literally countless times. He is that sympathetic. Truly he is Mr. Nice Guy.

I am still learning 12 months later. I have learned perseverance, tolerance and tenacity. Nothing appears to deter or shock MA Abubakar. He has an incredible work ethic. I   often   marvel at his stamina for work and intellectual rigour. He literally works round the clock. Sleeps late, wakes up early, devote time for play and family. A devout worshipper   without any outward exhibition of religiosity. His facial appearance and sartorial elegance is contemporary. He walks the straight and narrow path. He does a lot of charity away from public glare most times anonymously. I have not seen a day he nabs in public. Once I caught him yawning after listening to a clearly boring speech and I shouted inaudibly ‘voila’, ‘’he is human after all’’.

Perhaps his training as a lawyer makes him particularly censorious. He expects excellence from aides. But he is sufficiently considerate   to help a faltering aide navigate the labyrinthine precincts of power. Walking together, sometimes, a step behind and other times, a step ahead, I have seen him handle all kinds of incredible pressure with equanimity and with a boyish smile. Rarely he flies off the handle. Among us, the battery of aides, we call him “No Tension” behind his back.

I have seen him handle grief and tragedies. I have seen how he spreads his big frame to walk his talk. His response to emergencies is rapid. The credo to such emergencies always is  “treat fast’   within the ambit of the law.

Three character-defining   tragedies occurred in the last year that brought Governor Abubakar’s   compassion to the fore. On February 22, students of Government Secondary School, Misau perished in a ghastly automobile accident on their way to Kano. The governor was   in the nation’s capital, which he arrived a day earlier. As soon as he got wind of   the mishap, he suspended state duties and rushed straight to Misau, hundreds of miles away from the state capital, to comfort the parents of the deceased.  He immediately set in motion a support system for   the survivors.  He again, personally and quietly, visited the injured lying   in a hospital in Kano.  The state wrote off all their medical bills.

A month later, in the third week of March, late Senator Ali Wakili, May Allah rest his soul, died in a most dramatic manner. Hale and hearty 24 hours earlier, he slumped suddenly and died in his Abuja residence. MA was distraught. A day earlier at the wedding fatiha of Aliko Dangote’s daughter in Kano, he and the deceased had shared moments that were deeply political. They had a frosty political relationship but united in their support for the president, Muhammadu Buhari. The hatchet was buried a few hours to the late senator’s final bow.

The governor declared   three days of mourning and directed flags to fly at half mast and working hours reduced to grieve for the late lawmaker.

Perhaps the biggest tragedy that nearly broke my governor in public was the hurricane that hit the state on June 16, a day after Eid-el-fitr. A cyclone, some say, all the way from Central African Republic, crossed borders and hit Bauchi that fateful evening after we had all witnessed the colorful Hawan Sallah. The devastation was unprecedented.  The ruination was catastrophic. Over 15,000 houses were affected, several lives lost. Again, the governor had to cut short his Sallah break and responded to that emergency. That same night, the Azare main market was razed by an all night inferno. Properties and goods worth millions of naira were destroyed. Over 800 stalls gutted. Thankfully, no reported loss of life. Again he rose to the occasion. He left no turn unstoned to ease the anguish with practically nothing.

Underneath the tough exterior of MA Abubakar is a soft heart, incapable of keeping malice or grudges. In words and deeds, time and again, he has demonstrated   that he “harbors no ill-will” against anybody. In his cabinet are elements that worked against his emergence as gubernatorial candidate in the party   primaries. Gracious in victory, he runs an all-inclusive government mindless of these internal divisions.

Bauchi State finances are pathetic. With an incredible workforce of over a hundred thousand and a monthly wage bill of over N5 billion, only a very financially disciplined leader could deliver what Abubakar has delivered in three years. He inherited an empty treasury our month’s outstanding salary and a litany of social and economic problems. Today, salaries are promptly without waiting for federal allocation, education revamped, and urban centres renewed with over 400klms of road

The week I took charge, I goofed. I mismanaged a piece of information I picked and without crosschecking, went to town. And boom, the opposition latched on to it. The opposition in Bauchi, like in other states, is unsparingly uncharitable. In our state however, it takes it a notch higher.  It turns a molehill into a mountain-routinely. Often it kills a fly   with a   sledgehammer. It doesn’t believe facts. It believes only what is convenient. It   is from another world, I hasten to add.

In our own case, opposition   is more within. There is a battalion of fifth columnists operating as allies in the mix. We have wolves in sheep clothing. Behind their smile is a stratagem to ‘discredit’ and ‘dislodge’.

A cacophonous media campaign was mounted on account of this gaffe. The searing response was my baptismal into the rancorous politics of the government and the army of opposition. It was also a wake up call before I even took a nap. They knocked the government and the governor silly. Every action or inaction of a political appointee is attributed to   the governor by the opposition. As media adviser and spokesman, they wrongly reasoned, the governor must have ‘directed’ me to “mislead” the world with that unverified piece of information. My principal is an accomplished lawyer. He is not frivolous. He is not flippant. That bears stressing. It is therefore, inconceivable   that he will deliberately encourage disinformation.

To control the damage, we owned up. We retracted and apologized. However, we stood by the rest of our claims of reforms in all sectors.

All through that travail in which the governor was “roasted” in local media for information I passed and gleaned from, mostly, digital media, he didn’t even bat an eyelid nor look in my direction on account of that misstep. Till this day, not once he referred to that incidence even fleetingly. Still, the opposition was unrelenting. It ceaselessly exploited every opportunity to remind the people that the new “spokesman” being a “foreigner”, was ill-equipped to be the mouthpiece of the governor. We crossed that bridge. Another lesson learned.

Being a gubernatorial aide was a road I had once travelled. It was thorny and bumpy. This one is no different. It is a lot bumpier and rougher. The driver however, is skilful and knows the road fairly well. He knows when to accelerate or decelerate.

It has been twelve dizzying months since I “ported”. I however, miss the newsroom.

  • Kidnapping, robbery suspects paraded in Bauchi

The Bauchi State Police Command yesterday paraded three kidnap and rape suspects.

The spokesman, Kamal Datti Abubakar, said the suspects were arrested at Burga village in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area on July 10.

According to him, Dalhart Mamman (42) and Yakubu Adamu (23) and another suspect burgled the home of Ahmadu Adamu (65) in Zungur and killed him after kidnapping his four wives and stealing his mobile phone.

The wives – Hajja Adama (20); Aishatu Adamu (18); Binta Adamu (27) and Ramatu Idris (13) – were taken to Tashan Mai-Alewa Mountain and repeatedly gang-raped. The kidnappers also demanded N1 million ransom before the women could be released.

Ahmed Alhaji Yusuf (22), a wanted suspect, was arrested at his hideout in Lau village, Toro Local Government Area, in connection with other kidnap and rape cases.

Yusuf, while giving a voluntary confession, said sometime in 2017, he and five others now at large, conspired and kidnapped Alhaji Kalardi of Yumbu village in Warji council, and collected N100,000 from his family before releasing him.

Two others – Abdullahi Ibrahim (30), of Birshi Gandu and Aliyu Auwal – were also paraded for forgery and possession of letter head belonging to the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and certificates of the state-owned Tatari Ali.

Exhibits recovered from the suspects include nine certificates; a zione smart computer; two HP laptops; a police ID card; photocopy machines; one pump action machine gun; two cutlasses, a double-edged knife and four forged NNPC letter head papers addressed to different oil marketers.
