NWFL: Bayelsa Queens tighten grip on Group A as FC Robo’s perfect run ends

The Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Premiership served up an action-packed Matchday 7 yesterday, delivering emphatic wins, dramatic comebacks and a major upset that reshaped the dynamics in both groups writes TUNDE LIADI

Bayelsa Queens continue to set the pace in Group A, extending their imperious run with a commanding 4–1 away victory over Adamawa Queens in Makwada. Blessing Ilivieda opened the scoring in the 12th minute before Omo Afensemi briefly restored parity for the hosts. However, Janet Akekoromowei and Kindness Ifeanyi — who struck twice — sealed a dominant win that keeps Bayelsa Queens top with 18 points from six matches. Adamawa Queens, now winless in three games, drop to seventh with seven points.

In Port Harcourt, Rivers Angels delivered the most ruthless performance of the round, thrashing Heartland Queens 5–0 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium. Ramotalahi Kareem was unplayable, scoring a superb hat-trick, while Abasiofon Uwah added a brace. The emphatic victory lifts Rivers Angels to second place with 15 points, while Heartland Queens remain fourth on eight points despite the heavy defeat.

Edo Queens edged a tightly contested encounter in Benin City, recording a 2–1 win over Pacesetter Queens. Saidat Adeniyi struck early before Aminat Adebisi levelled for the visitors. Doosuur Atume’s second-half effort proved decisive as Edo Queens moved to third place with 15 points, level with Rivers Angels but behind on goal difference. Pacesetter Queens remain rooted at the bottom, continuing a difficult campaign.

In Uyo, Ibom Angels returned to winning ways with a 2–1 victory over Ekiti Queens. Happiness Agboye gave the hosts an early lead, Seun Fakunle equalised for Ekiti, but Wami Georgeline’s late goal sealed all three points. Ibom Angels climb to sixth with seven points, while Ekiti Queens sit fifth, also on seven points but with a superior goal difference.

In Group B, the biggest shock of Matchday 7 came in Ikenne where Remo Stars Ladies ended FC Robo Queens’ perfect start, handing them a 1–0 defeat. Cynthia Mega’s 73rd-minute strike secured a historic win that propels Remo Stars Ladies to third place with 12 points. Despite the setback, FC Robo Queens remain top with 18 points, though their lead has been trimmed.

Nasarawa Amazons maintained their unbeaten run in Iyamho, fighting back to earn a 1–1 draw against Confluence Queens. Seember Emmanuel had earlier given the hosts the lead from the penalty spot, but Omotoke Ogunfuwa’s late equaliser ensured the Amazons stayed second with 15 points. Confluence Queens remain ninth with five points.

In Asaba, Abia Angels produced the result of the weekend, bouncing back from their previous loss to defeat Delta Queens 1–0 away. Blessing Okon’s 55th-minute strike proved decisive, a result that reportedly led to the dismissal of Delta Queens’ head coach. Abia Angels move up to fourth with 11 points, firmly in the Super Six race, while Delta Queens slip to fifth with 10 points.

The South-West derby between Osun Babes and Sunshine Queens ended goalless, with both sides cancelling each other out. Osun Babes remain sixth with eight points, while Sunshine Queens stay seventh on seven points.

In Lagos, Dannaz Ladies secured their second win of the season, edging Ahudiyannem Queens 2–1. • NWFL: FC Robo stake unbeaten record in south west derby as Bayelsa Queens visit troubled Adamawa Queens

NWFL: FC Robo stake unbeaten record in south west derby as Bayelsa Queens visit troubled Adamawa Queens

With the league phase gathering real momentum, Matchday 7 of the NWFL Premiership arrives at a critical point in the season. Unbeaten runs are under threat, local derbies take centre stage and the battle lines in both Groups A and B are becoming more clearly defined. From title-defining clashes to survival six-pointers, today’s fixtures promise drama, pride and decisive moments across the country, reports TUNDE LIADI.

In Gombe’s Pantami Stadium, Bayelsa Queens travel north sitting pretty at the summit of Group A with a perfect 15 points from five matches, fresh from clipping Rivers Angels’ wings in a dominant South-South derby last midweek. The Prosperity Girls have been ruthless at both ends, conceding few chances and striking with authority.

Adamawa Queens, meanwhile, are under pressure near the lower half of the table and will be desperate to halt Bayelsa’s momentum on home soil. Anything short of maximum concentration could be punished by the league leaders, but the hosts will hope altitude and home support can spark an upset.

Still smarting from their first defeat of the season, Rivers Angels return home to face Heartland Queens knowing there is little margin for error. Third on the log with 12 points, the Port Harcourt giants cannot afford further slip-ups if they are to keep Bayelsa and Edo Queens within reach.

Heartland Queens arrive buoyant after back-to-back solid performances that have lifted them to fourth with eight points. Well organised and increasingly confident, the Owerri side will fancy their chances of exploiting any lingering vulnerability in the Angels’ ranks.

Second-placed Edo Queens (12 points, superior goal difference) will be clear favourites as they welcome winless Pacesetters Queens. Edo’s emphatic away victory in Abuja last time out underlined their title credentials, with goals flowing freely from midfield and attack.

For Pacesetters Queens, still rooted at the bottom with just one point, this is another stern test. Defensive discipline will be key if they are to avoid further damage against one of the league’s most balanced sides.

Ibom Angels versus Ekiti Queens fixture pits two sides heading in opposite directions. Ibom Angels have slipped to seventh with four points after consecutive defeats, while Ekiti Queens’ impressive away win in Ibadan lifted them to fifth with seven points.

Ekiti will target another road victory to stay in touch with the top four, while Ibom Angels must rediscover their early-season resilience to avoid being dragged deeper into trouble.

In Group B, Remo Stars Ladies versus FC Robo Queens tie is the headline act of Matchday 7 and it is also a mouthwatering South-West derby. FC Robo Queens arrive in Ikenne with a flawless record—six wins from six—and a four-point cushion at the top of Group B. Ruthless and composed, the Lagos side have set the pace all season.

Remo Stars Ladies, however, are no pushovers as the Sky Blue Ladies have already shown they can go toe-to-toe with strong opposition. A derby atmosphere, home support and the chance to dent Robo’s perfect run make this a potential season-defining encounter.

Regional pride fuels another South-West showdown between Osun Babes and Sunshine Queens at Lanlereke Sports Complex, Ileogbo. Osun Babes, sitting in the lower half after recent setbacks, face a Sunshine Queens side that has drawn too many matches but remains difficult to beat.

Both teams need points for different reasons—Osun Babes to steady their campaign, Sunshine Queens to climb closer to the top four. Expect a tense, physical contest with little given away.

Fresh from their first win of the season, Confluence Queens welcome one of the league’s most consistent sides, Nasarawa Amazons to their adopted home ground at Iyamho. Nasarawa Amazons remain unbeaten and sit second with 14 points, firmly in the title hunt behind FC Robo.

Iyamho will be a tricky stop, but the Amazons’ experience and defensive solidity could prove decisive. Confluence, now off the mark, will hope renewed confidence can drive another upset.

In Asaba, third-placed Delta Queens (10 points) continue their steady climb and will see this home fixture against Abia Angels as a chance to consolidate their top-three position. Their narrow away win last week in Umuahia against Ahudiyannem Queens highlighted their ability to grind out results.

Abia Angels, struggling near the foot of the table after another defeat at home to FC Robo Queens, must find inspiration quickly if they are to avoid being cut adrift.

NWFL Premiership: Fireworks as Bayelsa Queens brace for Rivers Angels, Abia Angels battle FC Robo

The 2026 Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Premiership gathers momentum as Matchday Six rolls in with mouth-watering fixtures across both Group A and Group B today. Following a dramatic Matchday Five that delivered goals, unbeaten runs and off-field controversies, the stakes are now higher as the season begins to take clearer shape writes TUNDE LIADI

All eyes in Group A will be firmly fixed on Southern University Stadium, Ozoro, where league leaders Bayelsa Queens lock horns with closest rivals Rivers Angels in what is unquestionably the standout fixture of the round. Both sides are locked on 12 points from four matches, separated only by goal difference, and this encounter could define the early title narrative in the group.

Bayelsa Queens, the reigning champions, have been ruthless and resilient in equal measure, coming off a hard-earned 2–1 away win over Ibom Angels. Playing away from their traditional Samson Siasia Stadium home due to renovation works adds a fresh dimension to the contest, but coach Whyte Ogbonda’s side will bank on their championship pedigree and attacking efficiency to maintain their perfect start. Rivers Angels, buoyed by Abasiofon Uwah’s hat-trick in their emphatic 3–0 win over Adamawa Queens, arrive full of confidence and eager to dethrone the champions.

In Ibadan, Pacesetter Queens welcome Ekiti Queens to the Lekan Salami Stadium in a clash that could prove decisive in the relegation battle. Pacesetter Queens finally opened their points account with a goalless draw against Heartland Queens on Matchday Five, but time is running out for the Ibadan-based side to translate performances into victories. Ekiti Queens, meanwhile, come into the tie on the back of their first home win of the season against Naija Ratels and will fancy their chances of building momentum away from home.

At the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, Heartland Queens host Ibom Angels in a contest of teams seeking stability. The Owerri Landladies have been hard to beat at home, combining a win with two draws, and will be targeting their second home victory of the campaign. Ibom Angels, still reeling from their home defeat to Bayelsa Queens and the subsequent crowd disturbances, will aim to respond positively on the pitch and claw back lost ground.

In Abuja, Naija Ratels face arguably another tough test when they host Edo Queens at the Bwari Stadium. The Abuja side are still searching for their first win of the season after two draws and three defeats, and anything short of a positive result could deepen relegation fears. Edo Queens, the 2024 NWFL champions, sit comfortably in third place despite sitting out Matchday Five and will be keen to reassert their title credentials against a struggling opponent.

Group B is equally poised for intrigue, with league leaders FC Robo Queens facing a stern examination away to Abia Angels at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba. Robo Queens boast a flawless record of five wins from five matches, capped by their narrow 1–0 victory over Ahudiyannem Queens. However, Abia Angels are quietly building momentum, sitting third with eight points following a solid 2–0 home win over Sunshine Queens. A victory for the Aba side would not only halt Robo’s winning streak but also significantly boost their top-three ambitions.

At the Umuahia Township Stadium, Ahudiyannem Queens will look to convert promise into points when they take on Delta Queens. Having lost narrowly to FC Robo Queens last time out, Ahudiyannem Queens will hope home advantage finally delivers their first win of the season. Delta Queens, fresh from a composed 2–0 home victory over Dannaz Ladies, arrive with renewed confidence and an eye on climbing further up the table.

In Lafia, Nasarawa Amazons welcome Osun Babes to the Lafia Township Stadium. The Amazons are flying high after their impressive away win over Remo Stars Ladies, a result that keeps them within touching distance of the league leaders. Osun Babes, meanwhile, are on the road again after edging Confluence Queens 1-0 in Iyamho and will be hoping to make it back-to-back away victories—a feat that would further underline their resurgence.

The South West derby between Sunshine Queens and Remo Stars Ladies at the Ondo Sports Complex, Akure, promises intensity and pride. Both teams are coming off defeats and will be desperate for redemption. Sunshine Queens, in particular, need a convincing win to revive their campaign and could leapfrog their visitors with a commanding performance.

Rounding off Group B fixtures, Dannaz Ladies host Confluence Queens at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos. Both sides are looking to bounce back from recent defeats, making this a crucial opportunity to reset their seasons.

Dannaz Ladies will target a second home win, while Confluence Queens search for redemption after another narrow loss.

  • WAFU B CWCLQ: Bayelsa Queens gun for victory against ASKO Kara

WAFU B CWCLQ: Bayelsa Queens gun for victory against ASKO Kara

Bayelsa Queens head coach, Hakeem Busari, has stressed that the Prosperity Girls will be fully focused on securing their second win of the CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU B Qualifiers when they take to the field today .

Reflecting on a 2–1 victory over Police Ladies of Ghana in their opening game last weekend, Busari shed light on the tactical strategy that proved decisive.

He explained that his team deliberately targeted the Ghanaian side’s reliance on their centre-backs for build-up play. By assigning forward Janet Akekerowei a pressing role, Bayelsa Queens successfully disrupted Police Ladies’ rhythm and denied them space to progress into midfield.

“For coaching ethics, we don’t usually disclose our arsenals, but we had studied Police Ladies and noticed that their play starts from the two centre-backs, with the orientation of play coming deep from them,” Busari said in his post-match reaction.

“We needed somebody with physique, height and strength to block that. That was why we kept Janet Akekerowei up front, to ensure their centre-backs couldn’t step into midfield. Once they couldn’t join in the middle, they didn’t have the numbers in attack. That was the tactic, and it worked for us.”

He also acknowledged the intensity of the encounter, noting the historical edge to Nigeria–Ghana clashes across all levels of football.

“For a game of this magnitude, the first match in a competition is always tough. Looking at Ghana–Nigeria history in every tournament, there’s always strong fighting spirit before, during and after the game. It was a tough encounter, but we knew we had to put in that effort to progress from the group,” he added.
