  • Boy regains eyesight after battling cataract for 11 years

An 11-year old boy, Genesis Osekose, has regained his eyesight after battling cataract from birth.

Genesis regained his eyesight after he underwent surgery in a medical outreach sponsored by Seplat Petroleum Development Company under it’s “You can see” project.

Parents of Genesis rolled on the floor as the bandage on Genesis eyes were removed and he counted fingers placed before him.

Mother of Genesis, Grace, aged 41, said they noticed his problem when he was one.

Grace said they took him to several hospitals but the amount they were asked to pay was above their income.

“Our son started having cataract when he was one. We took him to the hospital but we could not afford the money they demanded. Whenever he is walking, he does not walk straight. The eyes were always paining him.

“A neighbour introduced us to the Seplat programme in Warri. They operated on the eyes and he could see properly. We have been battling the ailment for the past 11 years. He is in primary four because he could not see writings on the board. He always complained that his teachers used to beat him.”

His father Joseph said he left his job in finding solution to the ailment of Genesis.

“They demanded N240, 000 in Bayelsa State. I left my son’s fate to the hands of God when I could not raise the money.”

External Affairs Manager of Seplat, Chioma Nwachukwu, said the project was part of the Corporate Social Responsibility of the firm to give back to the host communities.

Chioma said the project was meant to restore vision to indigent people and touch lives of many individuals.

She stated that over 65,000 persons have benefitted from the project since 2012 while 3000 successful surgeries were carried out.

Her words, “We know the important of vision to people. We have been doing this since 2012. We have recorded a lot of success just like the case of little Genesis.

“We also do medical screening for ailment such as diabetes and hypertension after which drugs are given to beneficiaries.”

The NOGOF award is a confirmation of the leadership position of Shell in local capacity development in the oil and gas industry. • Shell unveils $15b five-year investment plan

The Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) has unveiled a $15 billion investment in the oil and gas sector in the next five years.

Its Managing Director, Osagie Okunbor, broke the news at the second edition of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Opportunity Fair (NOGOF) organized at the weekend by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

He said the company was keen at expanding local content in the oil and gas sector.

Okunbor said the proposed $15 billion investment would bring huge benefits to the country and its people in terms of contracts and jobs, among other benefits in line with the theme of NOGOF: “Maximising Oil & Gas Industry for the benefit of the Nigerian people”.

He said: “These remain exciting times for Nigeria as Shell along with its partners will be maturing several projects in support of Nigeria’s growth ambition.

“A cocktail of policies and the active support of government and its agencies like NCDMB have made these investments possible. The industry continues to witness improve cycle times with NCDMB.

“We have an investment portfolio of over $15 billion over the next five years. Shell’s investments will bring huge benefits to the country and its people – contracts, jobs, thus underscoring the theme of this year’s NOGOF.”

Okunbor said that Shell recently announced the Final Investment Decision (FID) on the 300 million (cubic gas per day) Assa North Ohaji (ANOH) gas development project in Imo State.

He said on completion, the project is expected to generate circa 1200MW to power circa 1.2m homes (1MW – 1000homes) by supplying gas into the domestic gas market.

The SPDC chief added: “We also issued Invitation to Tender (ITT) for Bonga South West Aparo (BSWA) and as a shareholder in the NLNG Train 7, we are on track for FID later this year.

“In addition to these, we are also maturing several sizeable projects planned to start within the next five years with 28 projects covering export gas, domestic gas and oil projects spread across deep offshore, shallow water, swamp and land terrains.

“Benchmark for all these projects is to meet and where possible surpass the 70 per cent Nigerian content target set for BSWA.”

He listed other projects as the construction of over 200 wells; 1000 km of flowlines and bulk lines; subsea umbilicals, risers and flowlines (SURF); jackets, platforms, hull and manifolds.

Others are major oil and gas facility modifications and upgrades both onshore and deep water and at least 4 gas compression projects.

He said: “Employment opportunities are huge, not to mention the spin-off in allied services. These projects also offer huge capacity building opportunities in the delivery of Human Capacity Development (HCD) training, increased community content/ participation, in-country fabrication, increased utilisation of Nigerian vessels, re-skilling of Nigerians to take up more roles in shallow and deep-water operations and technology transfer.

“Beyond the project phase, on completion, these projects will offer significant brownfield opportunities in asset maintenance, logistics, among others.”

  • Dickson takes campaign against degradation to IOCs, regulatory bodies

Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson has urged international oil companies and regulatory bodies in the oil industry to embrace the campaigns against environmental degradation in the Niger Delta

The governor said the oil firms should prioritise the imperative of meeting international best practice in carrying out their operations in the Niger Delta. Dickosn, who spoke at the ongoing two-day Nigeria Oil and Gas Opportunity Fair in Yenagoa, lamented the level of environmental degradation and the attendant challenges facing oil producing areas in the country.

His media aide, Fidelis Soriwei, said Dickson stressed the need for stakeholders to take the environment and economic inclusion seriously to ensure sustainable peace and stability.

According to him, demand for environmental justice and preservation should be the concern of not only the Bayelsa and South South people, but the entire country because the environment was the common heritage of everybody.

He said: “I will continue to raise those issues and concerns that are germane to our people, especially as it concerns the environment. Just last week, I inaugurated a fact-finding Commission of Enquiry on our environment.

“The concern of Bayelsa on the environment should be the concern for all of us because the environment is the collective heritage of all mankind. There is no Bayelsa environment and there is no Sokoto environment. Yes, we may feel it more today, but with time, it gets to everybody.

“We need to collaborate more on issues of the environment. On our part as a state government, we assure you that we will continue to discharge our duties and obligations, working together with security agencies and community leaders to promote and maintain a conducive operating environment.”

Dickson, however, thanked the Federal Government, Ministry of Petroleum Resources and other partners for building a state-of-the-art headquarters for the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board in Yenagoa.

He also praised the Executive Secretary of the Board, Simbi Wabote, and Management and Staff of MegaStar Construction company, for expediting work on the project.

The governor reiterated his call on oil companies to relocate their operation headquarters to Bayelsa, which he described as the cradle of oil and gas business in Nigeria, even as he restated his administration’s commitment to continue to provide the enabling environment for investments.

According to him, the Bayelsa International Cargo/Passenger Airport and other investments in education, health and tourism were purposefully made to attract investors.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Ibe Kachikwu identified the celebration of mediocrity as reason why the country has not made appreciable progress in the oil and gas industry.

According to him, the country should be producing four million barrels of crude oil and not the current two million barrels. He called on the participants to see the conference as a time for a sober reflection on why the industry was still underdeveloped and dominated by expatriates, and take bold steps in exploring opportunities in the sector.

  • Between Judicial Commission of enquiry and Bayelsa’s electoral crises

Usually men and women perform various electoral functions to vote or be voted for into elective positions when the electoral umpires roll out dates and put in place laws that guide the conduct of such acts.

While the umpires and government functionaries work hard to educate the citizens on the need for a violence free process, some individuals bent on seizing power use any means possible to make trouble and ensure they win.

Interestingly, several places in the country were hotbeds and flash points of the total disruption of the systems put in place for free and fair elections during the period starting from the Presidential and National Assembly Elections and the State Governorship and Assembly elections between February and March this year.

Unfortunately, despite measures taken to guide the actors on the need to eschew violence and tow the part of peace, youths and adults expected to guide them accordingly have been extra busy bent on scuttling the process to enthrone their wards and loyalists or impress their principals who in some cases may not be bothered at how they go about it.

The youths who are being used to perpetrate electoral violence by the so-called leaders have never bothered to sit back and ponder what becomes of them after the elections, what roles are being played by the children of the leaders who use them to disrupt the process for their selfish gains. The major actors have never bothered to register their children, wards and relatives to even vote or join in the acts where human lives are wasted.

During such periods as the primaries, electioneering campaigns, voting and collation processes, their families are moved out of circulation, clothed in expensive robes and flown out of the creeks, jungles, villages to the cities and foreign lands where they have their mansions.

Worried by the mess created and the lives wasted in Bayelsa State, Governor Seriake Dickson set up a commission of inquiry in to the violence, mayhem and breach of peace during and after the General elections which ended after the forced rerun.

Knowingly, it has not been the best of news coming from the Bayelsa state Judicial Commission under the chairmanship of Justice Inikade Eradiri as several alleged actors invited by the commission shunned constituted authorities empowered to find a lasting solution to the cycle of violence.

The invitation of such prominent figures in the state like former Governor, Chief Timipre Sylva who is the leader of the All Progressives Congress APC, Honourable Israel Sunny Igoli a serving member of the state House of Assembly, the Acting Managing Director of the NDDC, Prof Nelson Brambaifa, the Minister of state for Agriculture Senator Heineken Lokpobiriand Mr. Famous Danumiegha, the candidate of the APC for the Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency, had legal backings beyond the state.

Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court Abuja had recently granted the Nigerian Police the Orders to arrest and prosecutes Hon Sunny Goli, the lawmaker representing Brass1 Constituency in the state House of Assembly.

More so, the oil industry players are also accused of being major players in the electoral violence even as Justice Abang also granted the prayers of the Nigerian police to arrest and prosecute one Mr. Sam Kodjo, an Oil Surveillance Contractor and others over alleged complicity in the February   23, 2019 attack and abduction of Deputy Commission of Police, Kola Okunola in the Brass area of the state.

The oil contractors’ name kept coming up during the first week of the sitting  as prominent  people who have appeared before the commission including Chief Blessing Ipigasi Izagara who is also the candidate for the Bayelsa East Senatorial District, former Chairman of Nembe Local Government  Area Chief Kurogbofa Walter – Benewari and the Vice Chairman of Nembe Local Government Area MrAiyebainaemi,  Walter -Benewari however told the panel that APC thugs attacked people in Bassambiri and Okipri areas.

Even as over 35 witnesses have testified so far, the security agencies are not being portrayed in positive terms as their conduct is being flayed for turning deaf ears and watching lives being wasted by thugs.

Unfortunately though, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, the Minister of State for Agriculture, has said the Commission of Enquiry set up by the Bayelsa State Government to investigate violence during the 2019 general elections in the state is a ploy to divert attention.

Lokpobiri also described his invitation to appear before the panel as attempt to distract people of the state from the real issue of Governor Seriake Dickson’s alleged mal-administration in the past seven years adding that the said panel was illegal and strange to the extant laws governing elections, including the Electoral Act and the Constitution.

The Bayelsa State Chapter of the APC had distanced itself from the panel and urged its members not to appear before it.

APC Spokesman, Doifie Buokoribo, said that the PDP government in Bayelsa had no moral rights to be a judge in an election it partook in.

Even as several lives were lost and a serving Deputy Commissioner of Police was abducted, he maintained that the panel was unnecessary and that there was no single political violence involving the APC in Bayelsa during the last elections.

Dickson had on February 24 alleged that the APC led by Ex-Gov Timipre Sylva and Lokpobiri had colluded with the military to unleash violence and manipulate the polls and hence the justification for setting up the panel.

Spokesman of the 16 Brigade, Major Jonah Danjuma, promptly denied the allegations and said that troops averted violence by arresting some political thugs during the polls. But how come lives were lost and the INEC ordered a rerun.

  • 517 abandoned amnesty students beg Dokubo for assistance

About 517 Niger Delta students on scholarship at the University of Africa, Toru-Orua, Sagbama, Bayelsa State, have appealed to the Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Prof. Charles Dokubo, to come to their aid.

It was gathered that the students, who were enrolled in the university under the PAP’s scholarship scheme during the administration of the former Coordinator, Brig.-Gen. Paul Boroh, were abandoned by his successor.

The Spokesperson for the students, Justice Ebiks, who is a 100 level student of Agricultural Economics and Extension Services, told the Nation that they were all stranded at the university because the new leadership of PAP failed to take responsibility for their scholarship.

Ebiks, however, expressed optimism that if Dokubo, whom he described as a lover of education, would grant them audience, he would intervene in their plight and get them back to school.

He complained that security officials and other personnel in the Amnesty Office blocked all the efforts of the students to interact with the coordinator.

Ebiks explained that senior officials in the amnesty office only told them that they were illegally included in the scholarship scheme and improperly documented during the tenure of Boroh.

He said: “We have been abandoned despite the fact we have cultivated the zeal to be in school. We are all stranded and most of us are going through difficult times. We were all sent to the school in Bayelsa by the amnesty office but now people there are telling us that we were not properly documented.

“We have been making series of efforts to see the new coordinator to no avail. Some persons in the office don’t want us to see him because they believe that Dokubo being a lover and product of education knows the value of education in the Niger Delta and will graciously rectify whatever problems we have and get us back to school.

“We once sent a delegation to Abuja to see him. We contributed money and sent the delegation but on getting to Abuja they were left stranded. Security operatives and other officials in the amnesty office did not allow us to see him.

“The delegation proceeded to see our elder statesman Chief Edwin E.K Clark at his Abuja residence. As soon as he got to know about the situation he felt the plight and pain of the youths and quickly criticized the act of wickedness carried out by the office. He emphasized that Niger Delta is not as we expect it to be, because people now politicize the life and affairs of the youths in the region.

“When we got back to Bayelsa, we reported our plight to the state government through the commissioner for education. But after waiting in vain, we decided to make further efforts to see Professor Dokubo. During the election, we sent a four-man delegation to Abuja to see him but on getting there they were told the coordinator travelled to Abonema to partake in the elections.

“The delegation went to Abonema in Rivers State to see the coordinator in his compound. It was almost like a suicide mission because of the gun battle in the area when they got there. They waited for two days and later proceeded to the house of the coordinator. They were still not allowed by security officials to see him.

“Other officials of the amnesty programme took over the matter and ensured the delegation did not see the coordinator. They told us that were not properly documented. We are appealing to the coordinator to come to our aide.

“Right now we are frustrated but we don’t want to engage in violence. We only want to go to school. Even if they said we were not properly documented, we are not illegal Niger Deltans”

  • Police parade 15 suspected cultists, robbers, kidnappers

The police have arrested 15 suspected cultists, kidnappers and robbers during a raid to curtail crimes in Bayelsa State.

The command recovered arms and ammunition.

Police Commissioner Sholla David attributed the crimes to the proliferation of small arms.

David, in his first news briefing yesterday since assuming office, restated the police commitment to tackling crimes.

He named the suspects and their ages as Precious John, 19, Abubakar lliyasu, 26, Victor Meremunya, 30, Issac Ogan, 22, Gielaemi Ben, 19, Pereowei Ibiagbe, 23, Tibolayefa Louis, 23, Gift Samuel, 22, Michael Doubra Ogolo, Pinaye John 19, and Pete Edwin, 23.

He said they were nabbed for robbery, adding that Precious Egbo, 17, Ozekizibe Wisdom, 19, Lucky Okay, 19, Tony Christopher, Goodluck Evans, 18, and Chinedeu Franklin, 19, were arrested for cultism.

David said a study of crime pattern indicated that most of the illegal activities were induced by cultism.

He said youths were often misguided to believe that cultism was a means of having a sense of belonging in the society.

The CP said: “Proliferation of small arms has posed a challenge to law enforcement officers in combating crimes. Youths have easy access to locally made pistols, especially in Yenagoa metropolis.

“To confront this menace, the command, through collaboration with community leaders and intensive surveillance, has smashed robbery gangs.

“As a proactive measure, the command has repositioned and rejigged its security architecture to confront these crimes through focused and intelligence driven raids at flash spots, rigorous stop and search operations on motorists and tricycles and through functional community policing programmes.”

He said the command needed residents’ support to challenge the criminals.

David advised the public to key into the community policing approach of the Inspector-General of Police to end the menace.

Said he: “The need for participation by the residents in active policing cannot be overemphasised. I must, however, hail Bayelsans for the partnership and support they have accorded me within these few weeks.

“I reaffirm the command’s commitment to fighting crime.”

  • Gang member kills colleague for protesting sharing formula

The Police in Bayelsa State are searching for a suspected armed robber identified as Oginivie, who allegedly killed a member of his gang, Gialaemi Ben, for protesting an unfavorable sharing formula.

Police Commissioner, Sholla David, explained on Tuesday the manhunt for Oginivie was following the arrest of other members of his gang after the murder of the 19-year-old Ben.

David, who paraded 15 suspects arrested for various criminal activities in the state, named other arrested members of Oginivie as Victor Meremunya 30, Isaac Ogan 22, Pereowei Ibiagbe 23, Tibolayefa Louis 23 and Gift Samuel 22.

He said: “They burgled a house and stole a generator. They sold the generator and shared the money.

“One of the suspect Gielaemi Ben ‘m’ 19yrs protested that he was given smaller amount.

“The principal suspect one Oginivie ‘m’ surname unknown shot him dead.

“In the course of investigation operatives went to arrest one of the suspects, Isaac Ogan who engaged the police in a shoot-out.

“He was shot on the leg and a locally made pistol was recovered from him.

“The suspects are detained, while the principal suspect Ogilivie is at large. Efforts have been intensified to arrest the fleeing suspect”.

David further said the police foiled an attempt by kidnappers to abduct an eight-year-old daughter of one Mrs. Amara Diekedie.

“The Command Control Room was alerted and responded swiftly.

“The kidnappers were pursued and one of them was gunned down. The 8- year old victim was rescued.

“Upon a thorough search of the surrounding premises two unserviceable locally fabricated AK 47 Rifles where recovered. Investigation is ongoing,” he said.

In another incident, the police boss said policemen on a stop and search operation intercepted a tricycle conveying Santus Berekeme ‘m’ 24yrs, Ebi Egbe ‘m’ 25yrs and Ebiereke Dunatus for a search.

“The suspects quickly jumped out of the tricycle and took to their heels, the policemen pursued them and in the process, the suspect opened fire one the officers.

“The officers fired back and shot one of the suspected Ebiereke Dunatus lucky on his leg.

“The other suspects were rounded up and arrested and one locally made revolver pistol, one locally made pistol, two live cartridges and one expanded ammunition were recovered from them.

“Investigation further reveals that the suspects had on 27/03/2019 robbed one Izuchukwu Nwabu of two Tecno phone valued at N32,000 and N20, 500 respectively, a cash sum of N84,000, in his shop at Opolo-Epie , Yenagoa. The suspects have confessed to the crime. Investigation is ongoing,” he said.

David said the buildup to the concluded general elections created security challenges and lamented proliferation of small arms in the state.
