  • Boko Haram: Dickson offers automatic employments to dead pilots’ wives

Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson on Monday offered automatic employments to wives of two Bayelsa State-born pilots, who died recently in action during a raid on Boko Haram hideout in the northeast.

The governor, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media Relations, Fidelis Sorowei, made the pledge when he led a delegation to visit one of the widows, Mrs. Diepreye Inokoba Jacob, whose husband, Flight Lieutenant Pereowei Jacob, died in a helicopter crash at Damasak, on January 2.

Dickson also extended the offer of automatic employment to the wife of the second pilot, Lt. Owei, who died in 2016 when the Commander 115 Special Operations Group, Port Harcourt, Air Commodore E Ebiowei, drew his attention to it.

Dickson earlier paid a condolence visit to the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, on January 11, to condole with the NAF on the death of the Bayelsa-born pilot.

During the visit, he called on leaders and Nigerians to support the Armed Forces in the ongoing campaign against the Boko Haram in the North East.

The governor said the offer of automatic employment was the state government’s modest way of encouraging and rallying support for the relatives left behind by the indigenes of the state who got killed in active service to their fatherland.

He described the late pilots as heroes whose services were a source of pride to the Ijaw nation.

He said: “We are very proud of the services and the sacrifices that our departed young heroes made. We hereby announce automatic employment for the wife.

“We hear you are doing your National Youths Service, you will get your letter of employment as soon as you complete your compulsory service to the nation.

“The Base Commander has told us that another officer, flight Lt. Owei also died while fighting in the North East. I hereby announce immediate employment for his widow.

“This is our modest way of encouraging our people in the service of this nation.

”Our people, from the beginning, have stood for Nigeria. We have been doing that and we are not going to get tired to demand that Nigeria does what is right for us too.”

The spokesman for the family, Oloice Kemenanabo, described the late pilot as among the best in the country before the sad occurrence.

He thanked the governor for the visit, which he said brought so much succour to the grieving family.

  • Dickson to politicians: support military to win war against Boko Haram

The Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, has called on political leaders and citizens to support the military to win the war against the Boko Haram terrorists in the North East.

Dickson in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media Relations, Mr. Fidelis Soriwei, spoke when he paid a condolence visit to the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, at the NAF Headquarters, Abuja following the death of Bayelsa-born Flight Lt. Pereowei Jacob, and four others in a helicopter crash on January 2, 2019.

The governor said that it was necessary for leaders across the country to support the efforts of the Armed Forces.

He regretted that some of the troops had paid the supreme price in the process of defending the territorial integrity of Nigeria.

He said that the Government and people of Bayelsa were further saddened by the loss of the Pilot, Flight Lieutenant Pereowei Jacob, and four others in the crash.

He said that the condolence visit was meant not only to mourn and grieve with the NAF, but to also encourage the military and security agencies on the ongoing combat against the insurgents.

Dickson promised to visit the widow of the late pilot to announce the support of the government to her.

He also called on Nigerian leaders to give necessary support to the loved ones left behind by military officers and men who got killed in action.

He said: “I am here because of the recent tragedy that befell your service, our nation and our state also. I am referring to the unfortunate incident as a result of which you lost some of your gallant officers who have been at the forefront at the efforts aimed at containing the insurgency.

“We are saddened by the loss of this very brilliant, dedicated, promising officers. The Government and people of Bayelsa are further saddened that the pilot who died in that incident, Pereowei Jacob, was a Bayelsan.

“The government feel that we should visit you, to condole with you, your officers, the airmen and women. I will also be visiting the family, especially the young widow who was married and stayed with her husband for just about three weeks before this sad incidence.

“Bayelsa mourns with you, Bayelsa grieves with you but above all, we are here to show solidarity with you, the Air Force and indeed the military in the efforts that are being made to keep the country safe.

“I want to use this opportunity to call for more support for the Armed Forces. I call on all Nigerians and leaders to join hands to support the work of the military and security agencies in containing the insurgency. Everyone is paying a price. Your officers and men have once again paid the supreme price.

“And we are here acknowledge the contributions and sacrifices of your men and indeed all the officers to keep the country safe.”

In his remarks, the CAS, said that the helicopter crash that led to the unfortunate death of the Air Force personnel would not discourage the service from intensifying the onslaught against the insurgents.

He said that the NAF was focused and working hard to carry out its statutory responsibility of protecting the territorial integrity of Nigeria.

  • Dickson to Sylva: verdict of history will be hard on you

The Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, has said the verdict of history would be hard on a former Governor of the state, Timipre Sylva.

Dickson said that politicians, who desecrated the opportunities to serve and abuse state resources to lure Bayelsa youths to violence would face condemnation in the courts of posterity.

The governor, in a statement by his Special Adviser, Media Relations, Mr. Fidelis Soriwei, stressed that politicians buying guns for Bayelsa youths and fanning the embers of violence would have their place of rejection on history’s pages of villainy.

Dickson was reacting to a publication in which Sylva alleged of media plot by the governor to pitch him against the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari.

The Governor said that it was rather unfortunate that Sylva descended to level of scavenging for imagined information from the gutters.

He said that while genuine and responsible political leaders responded to real issues, Sylva continually showed that he was yet to extricate himself from the agony of excruciating rejection by Bayelsa people at the polls.

Soriwei said that Dickson was too occupied with execution of his responsibilities as Governor of Bayelsa to devote attention to trivialities especially imagined media reports.

He said that it was the determination of Dickson to finish his administration well and strong insisting the Sylva was one distraction which serious leaders should avoid.

Soriwei said that Sylva’s statement was a product of blackmail inspired by the feared and anticipated consequences of hidden guilt.

He said it was rather sad that Sylva in his desperation to prove his political relevance to his political overlords saw casting aspersions on Dickson as the only route to political relevance.

He said: “Again, we are constrained to react to spurious claims and distractions from Sylva and his cohorts who are bent on misinforming the Nigerian public.

“It is indeed unfortunate that Sylva has descended to the level of scavenging for imagined information in the gutters for the purpose of attacking the Governor.

“While it is the standard for genuine leaders and serious members need politicians to respond to real issues, Sylva is yet to recover from bitterness occasion by his excruciating rejection by his own people.

“Now that Sylva knows that a leaked audio is not emanating from Bayelsa, he may try to catch some sleep. Dickson has great plans for bayelsa and Sylva is a costly distraction no leader would want to afford.

“The recent invectives from Sylva are a product of Blackmail inspired by consequences of some tormenting sense of guilt. When Sylva talks about conscience, Bayelsans shiver! There couldn’t have been better way to advertise hypocrisy.

“While Sylva is worrying over the imagined consequences of a badly buried corpse, we are mindful to remind him once again that the only thing in hot pursuit of him is his shadow.

“When he looks back, he shall find no Dickson. The Governor is miles ahead of him”

  • Sylva to Dickson: you have no fear of God

A former Governor of Bayelsa State Chief Timipre Sylva on Thursday described the incumbent Seriake Dickson as a man without the fear of God.

Sylva, in a statement by his Media Assistant, Julius Bokoru, also described as feeble Dickson’s denial of a plot to create an artificial war between him (Sylva) and the Presidency.

Bokoru said Dickson was shocked because the good people of Bayelsa State alerted Sylva of the plot.

He said: “Our Wednesday statement was clear and direct: Dickson seeks to create a wedge between Sylva and the Presidency through a fake news campaign.

“Dickson has no fear of God. He, therefore, thinks it is man rather than God that determines another man’s fate.

“Hence he speaks of someone’s ‘lifeline in politics’ and ‘the state of mood of his political masters’.

“If he does not know, Dickson needs to be reminded that the prevailing national mood, today, is the presidential elections scheduled for the next few weeks.

“Dickson speaks of conscience but conscience is when you pay civil servants their salaries promptly, conscience is when you don’t attack a courthouse like a thug, conscience is when you don’t elevate violence to the status of a government policy.

“Conscience is when you don’t impoverish a once thriving people and state, conscience is when you don’t fail abysmally at even basic levels of governance, conscience is when you don’t become a nightmare for those you are supposed to govern and conscience is when you don’t tell low level lies”.

Sylva added: “Dickson has no conscience, and that obvious absence of conscience, sadly, comes very naturally to him.

“He has ruled Bayelsa State for almost eight years and he is still obsessing over Sylva, he is still blaming Sylva for his many monumental failures, he is still blaming Sylva for his inability to comprehend the mathematics of good governance after all these years

“We are glad Dickson has denied he is not going to be involved in this mischief. This is good for the people of Bayelsa State, the polity and the country.

“Dickson survives on the politics of blackmail, petty mudslinging, propaganda and fake news. The bright news for the people of Bayelsa State, and Nigeria, is that he has exposed how alien he is to credibility”.

  • Sylva alleges smear campaign in Bayelsa against Presidency

A former Governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, on Wednesday alleged that the incumbent Governor, Seriake Dickson, was hatching a plot to begin a smear campaign against the Presidency in the state.

Sylva in a statement signed by his Media Assistant, Julius Bokoru, said the aim of the campaign was to pit him against some powerful persons at the Presidency.

But Dickson in a swift reaction described Sylva as an unpopular and desperate politician, whose conscience remained his greatest threat.

Bokoru said Dickson’s method was sponsoring with state resources, journalists in the mainstream media and content providers on the social media to write damning stories against some key figures at the Presidency.

He named Abba Kyari, the Chief of Staff to the President, as a particular target in the fake news campaign adding that the mercenaries responsible for the campaign would leave artificial traces linking the stories to Sylva.

Bokoru said: “What is most surprising here is not the fact that Dickson can cook up a plot as treacherous as this, because when it comes to demonic desperation and sheer cynicism, he has lost the element of surprise.

“But it is the fact that despite being at the twilight of his failed governorship, Dickson still deludes himself with the notion that clutching on to attempts to discredit Sylva can either divert public attention from his years of misrule or burnish up his damaged integrity.

“The Dickson government has been built on layers of empty propaganda that he has sustained with robotic consistency. His habitually high-sounding claims and promises have not produced tangible results to uplift the people he has impoverished for close to eight years”.

Bokoru said having pursued efforts to discredit Sylva since assuming office in February 2012, to no avail, Dickson had settled for a dangerous fake news campaign, give himself a soft-landing.

He said: “Unknown to Dickson, what the people of Bayelsa State need are imaginative economic strategies and tangible deliverables, not glib publicity stunts.

“At the national level, Sylva unmistakably and unequivocally emphasises that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari is one he, along with other patriots, helped install in 2015.

“He is all too enthusiastic to repeat this gesture come this February. Sylva is not in the business of unhelpful, petty rivalries in this same government, as the darkest side of Dickson’s generally dark imagination is dreaming to manufacture.

“It is incomprehensible that a man who refused to pay salaries even after the Buhari government’s consistency in allocations, a man who deliberately subjected Bayelsans to undue, undeserved difficulty through this Yuletide, would spend hundreds of millions of naira on terribly scripted propaganda, petty mudslinging, and building castles in the air.

“The public should discountenance the shenanigans of Dickson and his lowly government. While he is exhausting state treasury sparring with the shadow of Sylva, the state has degraded infrastructurally and economically, and violence, both spontaneous and state-inspired, is at the highest ever levels”.

But Dickson said in a statement by his Special Adviser, Media Relations, Mr. FIdelis Soriwei, that Sylva cut the gnawing image of a troubled man screaming and fleeing at the sight of nobody.

Soriwei said that Dickson was too involved and indeed occupied with the execution of the mandate the Bayelsa people gave to him, to be distracted by the hallucinations of a politician whose lifeline in politics was the state of the mood of his political masters.

He said that it was queer and absurd that Sylva did not point to any particular story in the media but was only spewing out fake news that a report would be released to the public soon.

He challenged Sylva to come clean on any particular sin he might have committed against the Chief of Staff, who had no issue whatsoever with Dickson.

He said: “This type of report falls short of the standard of a story that should command a place in our respected media space. Somebody of the exalted status of a former Governor is crying wolf where there is none and hallucinating that Governor reputed to be his political nemesis is after him.

“The point to note is that the Governor is too busy with the execution of the mandate given to him by Bayelsans in place of Sylva to be bothered by anticipated clashes between Sylva and the President’s Chief òf Staff.

“This comic claim by Sylva and his minion is a classic example of the wicked on flight at the sight of nobody. The fact is that Sylva is so scared and intimidated by the shadow of Dickson, that his nightmares about him occur in the day time.

“We hope Sylva is not having sleepless night over the possibility of yet another “leaked audio” in this era of “double speak and doubt thoughts.”

Soriwei stressed that while Dickson worked hard to put his name on all the life changing, big ticket developmental projects in Bayelsa, Sylva would be remembered for the descent to lawlessness, the slaughter of the innocent encapsulated in his killing machine, Famutangbe.

“Sylva’s regime is one bitter story of the locust, pain, misery, waste and misrule in Bayelsa . His rejection by the Bayelsa people only showed the decision of the people to reject stagnation and sterility in governance.”

  • Father arrested for killing sons with sniper

The police in Bayelsa State have arrested one Sunday Otasi for killing his two sons by forcing them to drink sniper after branding them wizards.

It was gathered that Otasi, 42, who hails from Agbobiri-Okodia in Yenagoa Local Government Area of the state, took his three sons, Success Otasi, 14, Miracle Otasi, 12, and Godstime Otasi, 10, to a bush along Glory Drive Road at Igbogene in Yenagoa.

The suspect was said to have tied his children in the bush with the help of his younger brother, one Levai Ayah and forced the killer substance down their throats.

Trouble was said to have started when a Yenagoa-based prophet, Goerge Odoko of George Odoko Outreach Ministries told the father of the children sometimes in September last year that his children were wizards.

It was learnt that the self-acclaimed prophet insisted that the wizardry in the children caused the illness of the suspect.

Following the prophecy, the father was said to have subjected his children to all forms of inhuman treatments.

The relatives of the suspect reportedly joined in the maltreatment of the three children saying that the separated mother of the kids bewitched them.

But Otasi denied killing his sons claiming that he only brought the children to Yenagoa on December 29 to be delivered at Prophet Odoko’s Church.

“I could not get the deliverance done because the Prophet could not attend to them. I decided to give the three children to my younger brother, Levi to return them to his mother in the village.

“I don’t know what my brother did to my children on the way back to the village,” he said.

However, one of the children and the eldest son, master Success, who fortunately survived the poisonous liquid countered the claims of his father.

He said his father and Mr. Levi Ayah, now at large, took them to the bush and gave them sniper to drink.

The boy, who spoke at a hospital in Yenagoa where he is receiving treatment, said his father deceived them by telling that he was taken them to a church service in Yenagoa.

He said on their way, the suspect diverted them to a bush where they were tied and given sniper to drink.

He said: “My father came to take us from our grandmother and told us that we were going to a church in Yenagoa but when we reached the road he and his brother took us to the bush and tied me and my younger brothers and gave us sniper to drink.

“I managed to come to the road after I used my legs to remove the rope and people saw me and took me to the hospital”.

Confirming the incident, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Aminu Selah said the father made confessional statements.

He said the police mounted manhunt on the fleeing suspect adding that investigations were ongoing to identify all the parties involved in the killing.

He called on parents to show love to their children and wards and urged members of the public to avoid jungle justice of any kind.

  • Bayelsa intensifies campaigns against infant, maternal mortality

The Bayelsa State Government has intensified its efforts to reduce infant and maternal mortality by delivering proper health care services to pregnant women, newborns and children.

The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Ebitimitula Etebu, who spoke at the weekend while inaugurating the second round of the 2018 Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week (MNCHW) at the Ogbia, said the programme was focused at protecting women and children.

He said the  event was a week-long programme organized to deliver integrated, high impact, low cost, result-oriented, effective, preventive and curative health care services.

He said the programme was geared towards shoring up maternal and child health indices in the areas of intervention embarked upon by the government.

Etebu named some of the interventions outlined for the week as Vitamin A supplementation in children, de-worming of children and nutritional assessment of children.

He said others were Iron/folate supplementation for pregnant women, routine immunization, birth registration and Intermittent treatment of malaria in pregnant women.

He said the programme would include HIV counseling and testing, counseling on key household practices (KHHP) such as hand washing and provision of reproductive health service especially family planning service.

Also speaking, the state Coordinator, World Health Organization (WHO), who was represented by Bumiegha Suowari enjoined all women to embrace the programme and make Ogbia a healthy place.

She said WHO and other partners were  always available in the state to support the health programmes technically and financially.

She said: “I enjoin the chiefs and the entire people of Ogbia LGA to embrace this program. Let me mention that in Ogbia LGA there are a lot places where we go and deliver health care services but a lot of people does not make good use of it.

“A lot of people just ignore. A lot of people said they don’t want it. A lot of people are noncomplying to the health care services. In Emeyal 1, the people that are not taking immunization program are too many. We have gone to the CDC chairman, had several dialogues. We have gone to do several community engagement meetings but it is of no avail.

“I want to use medium to tell the chiefs to go back there, gather your people, sensitize them and let them embrace every health care program that is coming to them. It is beneficial, it is free so that the entire people will be healthy devoured of all diseases”.

Speaking further, the Executive Director, Public Enlightenment Project, Mrs. Lilian Ezenwa said: ‘For this round of MNCH week, we have been able to provide 10,000 bottles of vitamin A, multivitamins and prenatals for our women. It is one thing for government to spend money organizing programs like this for us, it is another thing for partners to support with commodities.

“But the benefits will not come until we the mothers come out and access these commodities for our use and for our children. Therefore, I am appealing to all women here present, the nursing mothers, the pregnant mothers to please make good use of this opportunity.

“Visit every health care facility closest to you and receive these products for yourselves and for the wellbeing of your children. When we do that, we live healthier lives, our children will grow to be stronger and better and we will all break out of poverty.

“On behalf of vitamin A angel and Public Enlightenment Project, I pledge our continued support for every time that you need commodities”, she noted.

UNICEF Technical Resource Person for Bayelsa State, Odo Chikwuemeka said the purpose of the MNCH was to reduce sicknesses and death among women and children.

“The purpose of it is to reduce what we called malnutrition- child not eating well that is among our children”.

  • Dickson to youths: Shun criminals masquerading as politicians

Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, at the weekend implored youths to be wary of criminals and cultists masquerading as politicians in the state ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Dickson said that the sole motivation of such unscrupulous characters was to destabilize and subvert the achievements of his administration in the past seven years.

Speaking at a media chat in Yenagoa, the governor advised politicians not to overheat the polity in their campaigns insisting that people should be free to campaign and vote candidates of their choice.

He said Bayelsa was one of the safest and most stable in the country as a result of the huge investments his administration made in the security sector of the state.

He also urged parents and guardians to be committed in monitoring and observing the behaviour and activities of their children  as the government intensified the campaign against the scourge of cultism and drug abuse.

The governor commended the security services for their determination and commitment to the safety and well-being of the citizenry.

But he called on leaders at all levels to promote peaceful coexistence.

He ascribed the frequent change of Police Commissioners in the state to a sinister plot by the leadership of the opposition in the state.

Dickson stressed that while it was not within his constitutional powers to determine postings of police chiefs,  it was his responsibility to ensure that things were done properly to secure the state.

He said the recent signing of the law amending the Community Safety and Vigilante Corps would create increased opportunity for the citizens to participate more effectively in the security of their state.

He  noted that his administration took deliberate steps to stabilize the state through infrastructure and human capacity development in the past seven years.

He said: “Bayelsa remains one of the safest and most stable states in this region and in Nigeria. This is as a result of a lot of factors and measures put in place by this administration. The leadership of this state has shown maturity in how we have been managing things, even matters that are provocative.

“I want to commend the people of Bayelsa for their peaceful disposition and commitment to peace and order.

“Though there are few challenges that are quite troubling, such as cultism and drug abuse, particularly as it involves young people, the security services are doing their best to ensure the state is safe and stable for the citizenry even during this Christmas period.

“Political, traditional, community and religious leaders should mobilise people to ensure and promote peaceful co-existence and those taking advantage of lapses in the security and structural imbalances and weak judicial system to desist.

“I also want to caution people, especially the youths of our state not to be misled by criminals masquerading as politicians who buy guns and ammunition to kill and main people. It is very important that people are free to canvass for votes and also vote their preferred candidates.

“Politicians should not take advantage of their authority and power to overheat the polity but go on with their campaigns peacefully as those planning to wreak havoc in this state will be surely dealt with.”

The governor further said that the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC),  which was established with the objective of aiding the development of the Niger Delta was doing nothing about the region.

“NDDC is doing nothing. They are not even around to plan anything with anybody. Everything is just politics to them. When they started, they were doing one or two things but now, they do nothing.”

He said that it was a sad commentary on the nation’s security situation that a top military personality who got to the pinnacle of his profession could be killed in such a way.

Dickson in a statement in Yenagoa called on the Federal Government to ensure that persons behind the murder of the former Chief of Air Staff and former Chief of Defence Staff were arrested and brought to justice.

The Governor prayed to the Almighty God to give Pa Clark, the immediate family of the Late Chike and the Ijaw nation the fortitude to bear the loss.

The governor said: “The news of the death of Mr. Chike Clark, the son of Ijaw National Leader, Pa Edwin Clark came to us a shock. While it is a natural feature of our people as Africans to pray for Long life, we cannot question will of the Almighty God.

“On behalf of the good people of Bayelsa and the Ijaw nation, I condole with our leader on this sad development.

“We are with him at this trying moment and even as we pray for God to grant Pa Clark, and indeed the family the fortitude to bear this loss.”
