Aggrieved Bayelsa State residents yesterday broke into a warehouse on Isaac Boro Expressway, Yenagoa, and carted away palliatives kept by the state government.

It was gathered that the burglars, groaning under the hardship occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy, took food items, particularly rice meant for victims of last year’s flood, were kept.

Bayelsa was described as one of the worst hit states in the country’s history.

Some of the food items carted away by the looters, it was gathered, had since expired but that did not stop them.

With the subsidy removal ramping up the price of petrol from around N190 to about N620 per litre in the state, prices of goods and services had correspondingly skyrocketed resulting in acute hardship for many households across the state.

President Bola Tinubu had promised some palliatives for Nigerians to cushion the effects of the removal as the administration announced N5 billion grants and foodstuffs for each state and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

However, it has yet to be ascertained if the warehouse looted in Yenagoa housed food items promised by the Tinubu administration.

The state government has yet to comment on the incident.

A resident of Yenagoa metropolis said the information he got was that the looted palliatives were not new, stressing that they were left-overs from the flood period.

A source, who craved anonymity, said: “Many of the food items were bad, except perhaps the water. Yesterday, they were cleaning the place to pave the way for new palliatives to be bought in. But some people acting on erroneous information invaded the place and started looting the food items meant to be thrown away.

“For me, the only query is why the state government should leave the food items to get spoilt when they should have given them out to the people at the right time?”

Meanwhile, aggrieved ex-agitators have threatened to stage protests in the Niger Delta following failure of governors in the region to provide palliatives to poor communities despite receiving N5bn from the Federal Government.

The angry stakeholders under the auspices of Coalition of Ex-agitators of Niger Delta (CEND) said their governors seemed to have diverted the money released by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to alleviate the suffering caused by the removal of fuel subsidy.

The Chairman, CEND, Gen. Gershom Mpakaboari Gbobo, said in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, that while Tinubu was sensitive enough to make provisions for palliatives, their governors appeared unconcerned with the level of hardship in their various states, especially in Bayalsa and Rivers states.

“Where are our palliatives?” queried Gershom, who insisted that there were no deliberate activities and programmes by the governors targeted at providing relief to the people.

He said: “Does it mean that as usual, these governors have pocketed the money? We will never allow it to happen. We will compel them to bring out the money in a mother of all protests across the states. It will no longer be business as usual. Our people are suffering untold hardship while these governors are junketing in profligacy and living large without showing any concern to our problems.

“We expected the governor’s to have started deliberate programmes aimed at reaching the people with palliatives. We expected them to add reasonable amount of money to the N5bn and float far-reaching programmes that will practically ameliorate the pains of the people. But they are less concerned. We can see what Borno Governor is doing for his people but our entire region is quiet.”

Gershom wondered why some leaders of ex-agitators like the Chairman of the Presidential Amnesty Programme Committee on Strategic Communications, Gen. Nature Dumale, and the Chairman/President of all first Phase Ex-Agitators in the Niger Delta region, HRH Henry Binidodogha Ekes, had remained quiet over the non-challant attitude of the governors.

“Are our leaders, the likes of Hon Kakas, the leaders of Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), who is very close to the Presidency, including Nature Dumale, who is also the Secretary of the First Phase Ex-agitators part of the conspiracy to divert the palliative cash? All of them must speak out against these governors because when we begin our protests we will not listen to anybody,” Gershom said.

In Osun State, the government said it has beefed up security around warehouses where subsidy removal palliatives of Federal government were kept to prevent looting and invasion by hoodlums.

The state had announced receipt of 3,000 bags of rice from the federal government and said it was awaiting 14,516 bags of rice and 3200MT of maize before it would commence distribution of palliative to the vulnerable.

The Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, told our correspondent that government has put in place additional security operatives around the warehouses where palliative are kept.

His words: “We have put enough security measures in place, for those that may want to take advantage of the fact that we are still expecting another consignment from the federal government to loot the one we have at hand. We have informed security operatives and we have built more security around the places (warehouses) to make it impossible for anybody to loot the palliative meant for the vulnerable of the society.

“We are still updating the people of the state tomorrow on development over the palliative because we heard information that some consignment will arrive today (Monday). So, when we receive it, we are going to update the people on what is going on.”

Aggrieved residents invade warehouse, cart away food items in Bayelsa

Some aggrieved residents of Yenagoa the Bayelsa state capital on the night of Sunday, August 27, broke into a warehouse where 2022 flood palliatives were allegedly kept by the state government and carted away some food items.

The warehouse which is located along Isaac Boro Expressway was looted by people said to be angered due to the hardship in the country occasioned by the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) otherwise known as petrol by the Federal Government.

The Bayelsa State Emergency Management Agency (BYSEMA) said that the food items carted away were no longer good for human consumption because they were stored during the 2022 flood in the state.

The federal government had announced a sum of N5 billion in palliative grants to states for onward distribution to Nigerians.

Reacting to the invasion of the warehouse, the Director-General of BYSEMA, Hon. Walamam Sam Igrubia, in a statement on Monday, August 28, said that the agency was preparing for an impending flood this year when the DG visited the premises, and in his presence, remnants of food items, notably rice and garri that were no longer fit for consumption, were cleared from the warehouse and placed outside for disposal before the invasion.

He said: “The Bayelsa State Emergency Management Agency (BYSEMA) notes with surprise and concern the unwarranted invasion of the premises of a privately-owned warehouse in the Kpansia area of Yenagoa, the state capital.

“The incident occurred about 7.45 pm on Sunday, August 27 almost an hour after the Director-General, Hon. Walamam Sam Igrubia, alongside some BYSEMA personnel, left the warehouse premises.

“During the 2022 flood in the state, the Agency used the warehouse to store food items. As part of preparations for an impending flood this year, the DG visited the premises, and in his presence, remnants of food items, notably rice and garri that were no longer fit for consumption, were cleared from the warehouse and placed outside for disposal the next day.

“The remnants, which were swept from the floor and packed in disused bags, were less than 10 bags of rice and garri and with some broken cans of oil.

“For emphasis, BYSEMA states that these items were not fresh food palliatives and were not hoarded by the Agency or the state government.

“Importantly, these items are unfit for human consumption and a responsible, caring government like ours will not give Bayelsans such items as palliatives.

“In essence, there were really no food items to loot. So, those who carted away the unfit items are please advised in their own interest not to consume them.

“It also condemns the attempt to politicise the incident by opposition elements in the state, who seek to score cheap political points from the ugly occurrence.

“The agency assures people of the state of its preparedness to handle the distribution of palliatives provided by the Federal Government as part of cushioning the effects of its fuel subsidy removal policy as well as the fallout of an impending flooding this year.”

  • Bayelsa to refurbish Imiringi gas turbine plant

Bayelsa to refurbish Imiringi gas turbine plant

Bayelsa State Government says it has begun the process of refurbishing the Kolo Creek Gas Turbine plant at Imiringi in Ogbia Local Government.

The government also indicated its intention to build new gas turbine plants to create an enabling environment for the growth of electric-power-driven and dependent industries.

The Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, made this known yesterday when he received a business delegation from Jumboogois Global Services Limited and their foreign partners at the Government House, Yenagoa.

Ewhrudjakpo, who expressed delight that the energy consultancy firm was able to move down with its partners from the Republic of China, to assess the gas turbine at Imiringi, said there could be no industrialisation without sustainable and adequate power supply.

According to him, government is prepared to leverage on the liberalisation of the power sector and take full advantage of the abundant natural gas reserves in the state to build additional power plants to meet the growing energy needs of the people.

The deputy governor said the Imiringi Gas Turbine alone could no longer supply the volume of electricity demanded in the state in view of the expansion of the distribution network covering several communities previously not connected to the grid.

He explained that government had already signed a memoranda of understanding (MoU) with the firm as part of its commitment to the project geared towards improving power generation and distribution in the state.

He, therefore, called on Jumboogois Global Services Limited to expedite action on the refurbishment of the gas turbine and the local assembling of pre-paid meters for electricity consumers.

He said: “We are going to latch on the opportunity created by the law in the power sector. Bayelsa is in a hurry to develop, so we are excited about this project. The Kolo Creek Gas Turbine is among the first of such plants established in Nigeria.

“Power is productivity, and productivity is progress. There is no industrialisation that can take place without power. As a government, we are happy that a son of the soil is spearheading this project, and we are quite encouraged by the steps taken so far.

“You talked about the issue of smart prepaid meters. The prepaid meter is another way of making sure that we do not only generate revenue but also ensure that people will get value for money.

“I also think that the power need of the state is beyond the Imiringi Gas Turbine, as it is now. So, we should be looking at establishing another gas turbine in the state because Bayelsa is gas, and gas is Bayelsa State.”

The Managing Director of Jumboogois Global Services Limited, Mr. Timipere Gilbert Ogoibiri, said the firm and its foreign partners had inspected the state-owned Kolo Creek Gas Turbine plant, as part of the MoU that was signed in January this year.

  • APC lacks presence to win in Bayelsa, says governor

GOVERNOR Seriake Dickson has insisted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) lacked the political structure and presence to win the November 16 governorship election.

A statement by Dickson’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Fidelis Soriwei, said the governor spoke when he inaugurated the Peoples Democratic Party Grassroots Movement (PDPGM) from Brass and Yenagoa local government areas.

Dickson said the APC in its usual character was putting its hope on luring members of the PDP to its fold with money and fake promises which would fail them. He urged party faithful and the electorate not to be deceived by the antics of the APC.

The governor said the APC was torn apart by unaddressed grievances from the party’s primaries, which he said offended the original founders of the party and distanced them from its candidate, David Lyon.

Dickson said it was interesting that the APC opted to field a candidate who, according to him, lacked the experience and capacity to articulate issues of governance against the PDP standard-bearer, Senator Douye Diri, and his running mate, Senator Lawrence Ewhrujakpo, “who are tested and experienced with exemplary records in public service”.

The governor earlier received a prominent member of his party and former Caretaker Committee Chairman of Ekeremor Local Government Area, Mr. Tolu Amatu, who defected to the APC three days ago.

He lamented that the APC was banking on electoral fraud, through collusion with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the use of violence and mayhem through use of the security forces to harass and intimidate innocent voters.

Dickson, who said the PDP abhorred violence, expressed the confidence that his party would win the election on November 16.

He thanked them for their continued support for his administration in the past seven years and charged them to mobilise support in the various units, wards and communities and work with INEC and security forces to protect their votes during the poll.

He said: “I want you to take the message to our people about the antics of the APC. The original founders of the APC, even those who worked for former Governor Chief Timipre Sylva are not with the party’s current flag bearer. There are more grievances in the APC and they are not doing anything about it.

“They are concerned about using ‘federal might’, money and making promises to lure people, particularly PDP stakeholders. Defectors do not win elections, political parties do. It is parties with structures and superior strategies and planning that win elections.”
