Victor Boniface dismisses transfer rumours, commits to Bayer Leverkusen

Victor Boniface has brushed off rumours linking him with a summer exit from Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen.

The Nigerian forward has been the subject of transfer speculation following what many considered a below-par 2024/25 season, during which he scored 11 goals and provided one assist in 27 appearances across all competitions.

Boniface, 24, has reportedly attracted interest from Serie A heavyweights AC Milan and Juventus. Despite the links, he has confirmed his intention to stay at the BayArena beyond the current transfer window.

“I’m absolutely certain that my future is here. From my point of view, it’s 100% clear that I’m staying. I still have three years left on my contract, I want to win titles with Bayer, and have a great season,” he told BILD.

Boniface also discussed his relationship with fellow striker Patrick Schick.

Do you remember our 4-3 win in Stuttgart? We played together and had one of the best games of the season. Patrik is a very good friend. We push each other every day,” he added.

Boniface aftermath of horror crash: God says my time hasn’t come

Bayer Leverkusen and Nigeria striker Victor Boniface was full of gratitude  and went philosophical after surviving what could have been a  fatal accident yesterday.

But his  Bundesliga club told German media that  the  Super Eagles star was ‘slightly injured’ yesterday after being involved in a car accident,’

Boniface shared video footage and photos of his smashed car after an accident in a social media post that has since been deleted.

The 23-year-old could be seen looking into the camera and then showing what appears to be his arm dripping with blood.

Boniface wrote on social media on Sunday “god is the greatest” and “god says my time hasn’t come.”

German tabloid Bild reported Boniface was a passenger in the car and was on his way to pick up a friend at Frankfurt airport when it collided with a truck.

A representative from Leverkusen told Bild that Boniface “is fine”, having been examined in hospital.

The driver of the truck was uninjured, but the total damage was estimated at around 200,000 euros ($217,000).

The striker joined Leverkusen last season and played a key role as the club broke through for an unbeaten league and cup double – their first ever Bundesliga win – while receiving his debut Nigeria call-up.

This season he has seven goals in 10 games in all competitions. On Saturday, he missed a penalty but headed in the winner in a 2-1 home victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Leverkusen are away at French club Brest in the Champions League on Wednesday.

  • Alonso urges ‘frustrated’ Tella to be patient at Leverkusen

Alonso urges ‘frustrated’ Tella to be patient at Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Nathan Tella has expressed his frustration at the lack of minutes he’s received this season with the Bundesliga champions.

The Nigeria international enjoyed a productive debut campaign in Germany following his arrival from Southampton in August 2023, scoring five goals in 24 outings to help Die Werkself win their maiden league title.

Tella was hoping to play a bigger role for Xabi Alonso’s side in 2024-25, but he’s made just one start and two substitute appearances thus far, with Jeremie Frimpong being preferred on the right flank.

The 25-year-old has been given hope though, after having a chat with Alonso, who urged the Arsenal youth product to be patient as his chance will come.

“It’s frustrating, I’ll be honest, but I spoke to the coach. He [Alonso] assured me that I’ll get opportunities and that I have to be patient,” he told BILD. “When I get a chance, I have to show myself. I think I’ve done well, and I also think I’m training well.”

Tella was called up to the Super Eagles squad for the first time in November 2023 by former head coach Jose Peseiro for the opening 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, winning his one and only cap to date in the 1-1 draw with the Warriors.

  • Unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen win maiden Bundesliga title

Unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen win maiden Bundesliga title

Bayer Leverkusen’s record-breaking run to their first Bundesliga title was no fluke, with a 16-month plan coming to fruition.

The team made sure of their first trophy in 31 years with five matches left in the season, snapping Bayern Munich’s 11-year stranglehold on the Bundesliga.

Sunday’s 5-0 home victory over Werder Bremen further stretched Leverkusen’s Bundesliga record unbeaten run to 29 games – 25 wins and four draws to chalk up 79 points.

Coach Xabi Alonso took over a struggling Leverkusen side in October 2022 with the team second-bottom after eight Bundesliga games, having their worst start to a season since 1979.

After a few months it became clear the Spaniard had successfully injected a winning mentality, with his team racing up the table to finish in sixth place.

But it was during that rise in form in late 2022 when Alonso and the club set the foundations for this season’s success.

With all eyes on the World Cup in Qatar, club bosses in Leverkusen sat down with Alonso to map out their transfer plans and put them into action early.

By July 2023 Leverkusen had assembled their full squad and went into pre-season training with no late additions in August or September, as is regularly the case with most teams.

These transfers included experienced Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka, who added steel in midfield.

Also Germany international Jonas Hofmann, Alejandro Grimaldo, who provided nine goals and 11 assists as an attacking left-back having joined on a free transfer, and 23-year-old Nigeria striker Victor Boniface.

Leverkusen took the season by storm from the start, racking up 11 wins in their first 12 league matches,  with Boniface seemingly scoring at will with 10 goals and seven assists until his injury in January while on international duty.

  • Bayer Leverkusen ease past Fortuna to maintain winning start

Bayer Leverkusen scored three times in the first half to ease past hosts Fortuna Duesseldorf 3-1 on Saturday.

The victory put Leverkusen alongside leaders Borussia Dortmund with maximum points from their first two Bundesliga matches.

A sixth-minute own goal from Lewis Baker put the visitors ahead and Charles Aranguiz added another goal in the 33rd.

His effort was initially ruled out for a suspected handball but following a video replay the goal stood.

Kevin Volland, who was also involved in the first goal, set up Karim Bellarabi for their third goal six minutes later.

Fortuna cut the deficit in the 82nd with Alfredo Morales.

  • Germany’s Neuer will be first-choice if he makes World Cup – Bierhoff

Manuel Neuer will be Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper at next month’s FIFA World Cup if he makes the final squad, team manager Oliver Bierhoff said on Thursday.

The former Germany striker said this even against the background of the fact that the 2014 World Cup winner has not played a competitive game since September.

Neuer missed almost the entire season after breaking a bone in his foot and undergoing surgery.

His comeback for Bayern Munich was repeatedly delayed and the 32-year-old has had no match practice ahead of the tournament starting in Russia on June 14.

He played in both recent training matches against Germany’s Under-20 team at their training base in Italy and is set to play in their friendly international against Austria on Saturday.

“Manuel will go to the World Cup as our number one,” Bierhoff told reporters at their training camp in Eppan, northern Italy. “If he makes the squad, then Marc-Andre (ter Stegen) will be number two.”

There are four goalkeepers, including FC Barcelona’s ter Stegen, Paris St Germain’s Kevin Trapp and Bayer Leverkusen’s Bernd Leno, in coach Joachim Loew’s 27-man preliminary squad, preparing in the Italian Alps.

He will cut four players, including one goalkeeper, on Monday for his final 23.

“Manuel is already full on track. He does not need to get back on it. All the players have left a big impression here and it is as very difficult decision,” Bierhoff said.

“On the evening before the team announcement there will be the final thoughts among the coaching staff. By noon the next day the players will be informed.”

The Germans also expect Chancellor Angela Merkel to drop in on their camp this week.

“My information is that on Sunday she will drop by. Before our training camp we visited her and she had hinted that she wanted to say hello without too much fanfare,” Bierhoff said.

“It’s kind of a tradition. It is nice to hear from her and how she sees the team’s situation going into the tournament.”

The Germans, who also face Saudi Arabia in Leverkusen on June 8 in their final warm-up match, are in World Cup Group F with Sweden, South Korea and Mexico.

The tournament starts on June 14.

  • Leverkusen sends Schmidt packing

    Leverkusen sends Schmidt packing

Bayer Leverkusen have sacked head coach Roger Schmidt following a 6-2 defeat at Borussia Dortmund.

The BayArena side have underachieved this season and sit ninth in the Bundesliga – 13 points away from a Champions League spot – after 23 games.

Saturday’s heavy loss , their third consecutive defeat in the league – proving the final straw for the club’s board.

“Bayer 04 have parted ways with head coach Roger Schmidt with immediate effect,” read a statement on the club’s official Twitter account.

The 49-year-old took charge of Leverkusen in 2014 after impressing during his time in charge of Red Bull Salzburg, and led them to fourth place in the table in his first season at the club, before going one place better in 2015-16.

Leverkusen will be looking to get their season back on track without Schmidt on Friday when they host Werder Bremen, before looking to overturn a 4-2 Champions League first-leg defeat against Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon.

German star, Brandt wary of U-23 Eagles

After having an easy progress to the last four of the men’s football event of Rio 2016 Olympic Games, German midfielder, Julian Brandt is familiar with the quality of their semi-final opponent- Nigeria and the Bayer Leverkusen admitted that the U-23 Eagles are very strong and fast.

Brandt, who was part of the team that edged out Nigeria’s Flying Eagles from the last U-20 World Cup, has been instrumental to the fine form of the European team at the Olympic Games with their 4-0 bashing of Portugal still fresh in their memory.

“They (Nigeria) are positively crazy because they take a big risk,” he told DFB-TV. “I consider Nigeria as offensively strong and very fast,” Brandt said.

However, U-23 Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi believes the African side is ready for the German machine.

“Maybe they will be a bit similar to the Swedish or Danish teams we faced. We have to make sure we’re ready. We have to make sure we play well and hopefully we do exactly what [coach Samson Siasia] asks us to do. He’s been absolutely amazing with his tactics and with the way he wants us to play,” Mikel said.

The two giants will battle out for a place in the final at Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo.

Sidney Sam seals UCL spot with Leverkusen

Super Eagles prospect Sidney Sam was in action for 84 minutes as Bayer Leverkusen made sure of a top-three Bundesliga finish and a place in next season’s Champions League group stage with a 2-0 win at Nuremberg on Saturday.

Werder Bremen’s troubles continued as they squandered a two-goal lead in the last five minutes and were held 2-2 at home by Hoffenheim in a relegation battle.

Aaron Hunt converted a penalty awarded after only 25 seconds and Kevin de Bruyne made it 2-0 in less than half an hour for 14th-placed Bremen, only for two late goals from Sven Schipplock to stun the home crowd.

Warri Wolves slam €1m on Mba

Nigerian top flight side, Warri Wolves, is willing to sell African Nations Cup hero, Sunday Mba only for the sum of €1 million (around N210 million), Supersport.com reports.

Wolves had also included a 20 percent sell-on clause in any future deal for the Super Eagles striker.

The 24-year-old striker, who scored the winning goal at the 2013 AFCON final against Burkina Faso earlier this month, has already been linked with Bayer Leverkusen, Dinamo Zagreb and OB Odense.

“The transfer fee for Sunday Mba has soared right now. The club is very willing to cash in on him at the moment as he was a key player for Nigeria at the Nations Cup.

“Also there are a number of clubs in Europe seeking to sign him following his superb display at the Nations Cup against Cote d’Ivoire in the quarterfinal and Burkina Faso in the final. The (Warri Wolves) club chairman is insistent on doing business for the player but for nothing less than the asking fee of €1 million,” a club official informed supersport.com.

The striker was close to sealing a move to rivals, Enugu Rangers but that switch now looks dead.

Mba has made 10 appearances for the Super Eagles and has scored five goals.
