    A politician and a prophet

An interesting clash between a politician and a prophet gives insight into the things that happen behind the scenes in the pursuit of power.

The Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, a former governorship candidate who has his eyes on the 2027 Oyo State governorship race, alleged that Primate Elijah Ayodele of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church “had persistently approached him with unsolicited offers of “spiritual intercession” purportedly to guarantee electoral success.”

In a petition to the Department of State Services (DSS),  he urged the security agency to “investigate the activities of the said Pastor Ayodele for extortion, blackmail, and deliberate dissemination of false and inciting information; compel him to retract his false prophecies and issue a formal written apology; and bring him under the force of the law, in accordance with relevant provisions of the Nigerian Constitution and Criminal Code, to deter similar fraudulent religious practices in future.”

He said there was “documentary evidence, including recordings and message exchanges, which clearly show his repeated demands for money and other items under the guise of spiritual assistance.”

Ayodele’s response: “I didn’t ask Bayo Adelabu to bring money for prayers.” His account: “He was the one who sent someone to me to talk to me on his behalf. He went as far as saying he was willing to give anything to become the next governor of Oyo State…

“I told him that they won’t want to give him the governorship ticket, but if he wants it so bad, he should seek the mercy of God by buying the musical instruments for God, not even for my church, but he said he can’t do it. That’s all.”

Why did Ayodele suggest the purchase of musical instruments for a church?  It is unclear how buying such instruments could bring electoral success for Adebayo.

The minister’s grouse is that Ayodele had launched a campaign to demarket him, by prophesying his electoral failure, following his refusal to release money allegedly demanded.

“I have been talking about how he won’t be made governor of Oyo State for years; this is why he called me to seek solutions… my subsequent prophecies after our discussion about his ambition aren’t because he failed to buy the musical instrument,” the cleric explained.

Should Adebayo be troubled by such alleged demarketing? Should he be bothered by Ayodele’s prophecy of electoral doom for him?

Adebayo said the cleric had demanded N150 million from him to make his gubernatorial dream come true.  The exchange raises questions about quality candidacy, the role of money, and the potency of spiritual intervention in the country’s electoral space.

How many politicians and spiritualists of various hues across the country are collaborating towards achieving electoral success as the 2027 elections draw near?

In such a context, where is the place of the electorate, and how much power do voters have?

    • Adelabu offered to give anything to become Oyo governor – Ayodele

The Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, has petitioned the Department of State Services (DSS), accusing Primate Elijah Ayodele, founder of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Oke Afa, Lagos, of attempting to blackmail and extort N150 million from him under the guise of offering “spiritual intercession” to secure his emergence as governor of Oyo State.

Adelabu, a former governorship candidate who has already declared his interest in the 2027 Oyo governorship race, alleged that Ayodele resorted to malicious prophecies and character assassination after he declined the cleric’s overtures.

In the petition dated October 13, 2025, and signed by Bolaji Tunji, his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Adelabu claimed that Ayodele persistently pressured him for a large sum of money and costly spiritual items, and, upon his refusal, embarked on a campaign of false prophecies aimed at tarnishing his image.

According to the aide, “Under this guise, he had on several occasions demanded huge sums of money and expensive spiritual items, cumulatively amounting to over N150 million, as purported prerequisites for divine favour.”

He, however, noted that the minister had consistently declined his requests, believing that his political ambition is driven by genuine service to the people and not by any spiritual manipulation or fetish practice.

Tunji said following Adelabu’s refusal to accede to his extortionate demands, Primate Ayodele has embarked on a campaign of malicious and false prophecies targeted at discrediting him publicly.

The letter stressed that the Primate has gone as far as declaring through various media channels that “God told him Adelabu will not win the election,” and has recently made more provocative and inciting statements suggesting that he would fail because of his association with the ‘Èmi Lòkan’ slogan (“It’s my turn”).

Being a minister, Adelabu, according to the petition, had previously chosen to ignore his antics to avoid unnecessary public confrontation with a religious figure.

The letter stressed that Primate Ayodele’s continued propagation of these false prophecies, which are evidently retaliatory and malicious in nature, now pose a threat not only to the Minister’s reputation but also to public order and confidence in the democratic process.

The letter read, “I write to formally draw the attention of the Department of State Services (DSS) to the extortive, deceitful, and inciting activities of one self-acclaimed pastor known as Primate Elijah Ayodele, of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, whose actions have become not only personally distressing to the Honourable Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, but also capable of disturbing public peace and undermining the integrity of the political process in Oyo State.

“Since his tenure as the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and particularly in the period leading up to his current aspiration to serve as the Governor of Oyo State, this individual had persistently approached him with unsolicited offers of “spiritual intercession” purportedly to guarantee electoral success.”

Continuing, Tunji said, ” I therefore urge the Department of State Services to kindly investigate the activities of the said Pastor Ayodele for extortion, blackmail, and deliberate dissemination of false and inciting information; compel him to retract his false prophecies and issue a formal written apology; and bring him under the force of the law, in accordance with relevant provisions of the Nigerian Constitution and Criminal Code, to deter similar fraudulent religious practices in future.

“We are in possession of documentary evidence, including recordings and message exchanges, which clearly show his repeated demands for money and other items under the guise of spiritual assistance. We will willingly make these available to your office for the purpose of investigation.

“I trust that the DSS, as a key institution for national security and public integrity, will handle this matter with the urgency and seriousness it deserves.”

Reacting to Adelabu’s claims, Primate Ayodele, denied allegations that he attempted to extort N150 million from the minister of power, over the latter’s political ambitions, stressing that he only discussed the cost of the musical instruments after the minister inquired about them.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin, Ayodele rejected the claims, saying Adelabu sought clarification on prices, and he merely advised that the minister send someone to the market to verify costs, alongside a representative from his own church.

He explained that he told Adelabu it would be difficult for him to secure the governorship ticket but suggested he could “seek the mercy of God” by purchasing the instruments, “not necessarily for my church,” he added.

Ayodele said, “I didn’t ask Bayo Adelabu to bring money for prayers. I told him to ask someone from his end to go to the market and find out how much the said trumpet cost, while someone follows them from my end too. His personal assistant, himself, and the person he sent to me put me under so much pressure because he was desperate for governorship.

“He was the one who sent someone to me to talk to me on his behalf. He went as far as saying he was willing to give anything to become the next governor of Oyo State, and the only thing I told him was to get the trumpets for his own good.

“I told him that they won’t want to give him the governorship ticket, but if he wants it so bad, he should seek the mercy of God by buying the musical instruments for God, not even for my church, but he said he can’t do it. That’s all.”

Ayodele added that he had long spoken publicly about the challenges facing Adelabu’s governorship ambition and maintained that his prophecies were unrelated to any disagreement over the instruments.

“I have been talking about how he won’t be made governor of Oyo State for years; this is why he called me to seek solutions. I have never spoken to him before till he sent people to me and personally requested my spiritual help,” he said.

”I don’t make prophecies to make money. I am blessed already, and my subsequent prophecies after our discussion about his ambition aren’t because he failed to buy the musical instrument. It can never be.”

    Bayo Adelabu’s song of praise

Adebayo Adelabu aka Penkelemensi or Bayseone is not a rookie in politics in Oyo State.

His job as the Minister of Power has further placed him in the cynosure of eyes as he will bring his cerebral prowess as an accountant into play, handling the critical sectors of the economy. Nigeria has suffered from its epileptic power for decades.

He didn’t just come into prominence, he is from a family that held sway in Oyo and defunct Western Region politics which had his late grandfather Adegoke Adelabu as patriarch.

Just like his brilliant grandfather, Adelabu, a former deputy governor at the Central Bank of Nigeria and two-time Oyo State governorship aspirant, is a man favoured by God.

Last weekend, after leaving his hometown in Ibadan enroute to Abuja with his friends and staff on a flight, the plane conveying him crash landed but with no casualty recorded. While his supporters were jubilating that their son left the air mishap scene unscratched, some said it’s the good things he has been doing that saved him.

Sources say after the incident, he was just thanking God for protecting him. Despite the incident, Adelabu came to Lagos to join the Governor of Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, to inaugurate the 717m Oyingbo Bridge in Lagos.

Another source said Adelabu is planning a prayer session and  thanksgiving to thank God for not cutting his life short.

  • Ajimobi seeks state police

Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has called for the establishment of state police to curb crime in the country.

Ajimobi made the call at the inauguration of the Oyo State Safe City Control Centre aimed at improving the security network in the state.

“As important as concepts such as democracy is, go around the world and see the best of democracies, there is none of them without its state police, all the states in America, France and other countries.

“State police will be staffed with people from the local communities where they have deep knowledge about the terrain and the inhabitants therein. That is why no crime goes unsolved in the western world,” he said.

Ajimobi said that the control center was one of his administration’s efforts to ensure the restoration and sustenance of peace in the state.

“Before our administration came on board in 2011, what we had in the state was hooliganism, violence, brigandage and killings. On assumption, we swung into action and started from the restoration of peace and security.

“Our immediate effort in 2011 at stopping crime and criminal tendencies yielded positive results as our special security outfit was instituted.

“If we have not achieved anything since we came on board, we have achieved peace and security which is the major purpose of government,” he said.

He said that the efforts accounted for the state being ranked as one of the most peaceful, adding it was also adjudged one of the five topmost states in the Ease of Doing Business by Nigeria Bureau Statistics.

Ajimobi commended security agencies in the state for working with resilience to reduce crime in spite of poor logistics as well as lack of technology and database in Nigeria.

He assured the people of his administration’s commitment toward combating crime with the use of technology.

Mr Abiodun Odude, the Commissioner of Police in the state, commended Ajimobi for his support to security agencies, adding that this had made their work easier.

“If not for the intervention of the incumbent governor in providing operational vehicles, vehicle batteries, tyres and other needed materials like armoured personnel carrier, the security apparatus would have been grounded in the state.

“No security work can be done without needed materials. OYSSTF (Oyo State Security Trust Fund)  has helped refurbish three armored personnel carriers out of the 12  we have and I can assure you that one APC is equal to 100 policemen.

“So we must show our gratitude to the present administration for the support given over time,” he said.

Chief Bayo Adelabu, the Chairman of OYSSTF Board, said the Safe City Project was another landmark achievement by the administration.

He said the monitoring capability of the CCTV technology pre-empted crime in notable strategic locations in the state.

“Nobody will commit crime if they know they will be apprehended;  the realization that you are being watched is a measure of deterrence against crime.

He commended corporate organisations for their support, calling on others that were yet to contribute as well as private individuals to support the initiative.

The control centre is the hub for the close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras installed in some parts of Ibadan metropolis such as  Sango, Mokola and Challenge.

  • Youth groups woo CBN deputy governor for Oyo Guber office

As the preparations for the 2019 polls gather stems, the Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (Operations), Bayo Adelabu, has been challenged and endorsed by a pro-democracy youth group across Oyo state, the New Era Ambassadors (NEA), to succeed the incumbent governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi.

The CBN boss, a grandson of a pre-independent firebrand Ibadan politician, Adegoke Adelabu, fondly called ‘Penkelemesi’, according to the group has done well at the national level and as such is well equipped and qualified to replicate same in the state.

The endorsement given during an ‘Ibadan Town Hall Standing Ovation for Bayo Adelabu’ held at Mapo Hall, Ibadan, was attended by thousands of people from across the state.

Coordinator of the New Era Ambassadors, Femi Awogboro, in his address, noted that Governor Ajimobi has raised the bar of governance in the state and his successor should be a tested and trusted competent successful administrator, saying: “The incumbent governor of the state, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, has set standard, and as such, a successor, who is worthy in character, political sagacity and purposeful acumen is required to steer the ship further.”

Awogboro was worried that vast majority of these breeds have an aversion for murky water of Nigerian brand of politics, adding that “are often dissuaded by raging acrimony,  wanton Shenanigans, a plethora of Machiavellian freaks and bickerings that characterised politics across the nation and cultures.”

Corroborating Awogboro stance, other speakers including Chairman, Quarry Haulers and Marketers Association of Nigeria,  Oyo State chapter, Otunba Adeola Opayinka; zonal chairman of New Era Ambassadors for Ibadan Outer City Coordination, Babatunde Raji, all said that Adelabu has track records, historical clouts, professional accomplishments and rare genre of discipline, to take over the mantle of leadership from Ajimobi.

“We are passionately appealing to him to bring his expertise, vision, tact, intelligence and vibrancy to bear, by contesting for the post of Governor of Oyo state, come 2019, to keep on the good work started by the incumbent.

“Our gladness will know no bounds if he says an affirmative yes to our clarion call to serve the good people of Oyo State. We also want to affirm that our organisation is committed to this project, and we want to say unequivocally that we will foot the bill for the purchase of his form, once he hearkens to our call. This is to show him that we really want him to vie,” Awogboro stated.

He, however, warned that Adelabu rejection of the endorsement and call will be a great disservice to the people of the state particularly the youths who look up to him as a new generation leader and would not be acceptable to the group.

Oyo: Contractors to pay security levy for safe city project

In line with the laws that set it up, the Oyo State Security Trust Fund is set to implement a compulsory security levy across Oyo State. The levy according to the government  would be tailor-made to suit the economic profile of the state as well allow corporate bodies, individuals and all residents to contribute to the security of the state.

Governor Abiola Ajimobi made the disclosure, while addressing stakeholders at a town hall meeting entitled: ‘Public-Private Partnership in Security Funding: Introduction of Security Levy in Oyo State,’ organised by OYSSTF at the House of Chiefs, Parliament Building, Secretariat, Ibadan.
An enabling law of the Oyo State Security Trust Fund (OYSSTF) as amended by the state House of Assembly, the Governor said, was to pave way for the operation of a private sector driven OYSSTF to incorporate the introduction of the security levy into law to the effect that corporate organisations, religious and other social bodies are made to pay yearly security levies to the Trust Fund.

Ajimobi, who was represented by his deputy, Otunba Moses Adeyemo, stated that the security levy was introduced “to ensure that all stakeholders fulfill their roles as responsible citizens of the state and by contributing their quota to the prevailing peaceful atmosphere in Oyo State.

“It is not in doubt that our security agencies have faced a serious shortfall in funding. Funding Oyo State Security Trust Fund is the key to achieving all these goals. On our part, this hover has granted a one per cent security tax on all contracts executed on behalf of the state government, and I am also aware that these deductions have assisted the Fund in the past year.

“For the furtherance of our agenda on safety and security, we have embraced the safe city project, which will proffer cutting edge solutions that will nip crime and criminality in the bud, especially in our major townships. We are currently installing closed circuit television (CCTV) in black spots and business districts in the city to enhance our security architecture. I ask all the stakeholders to ensure successful implementation of the security levy collection exercise that is to commence shortly.
“We inaugurated the joint security outfit codenamed ‘Operation Burst’ with six zonal commands. To give the outfit the needed bite, we procured armoured personnel carriers, a fleet of patrol vehicles and equipped them with state-of-the-earth communication equipment for their operations.

“To enlist the support of stakeholders,  we went a step further by floating the Oyo State Security Trust Fund to raise funds for the improvement of the security architecture of the state. The result of these efforts is a drastic reduction in crime rate and civil unrest manifesting in no major crime or robbery in the last six years”, he said

Speaking, Chairman, OYSSTF, Bayo Adelabu, said the organisation intends to transform the security apparatus in the state from being a reactionary one to an anticipatory one,  saying, “ this vision can be achieved only if there is an upward review in funding of areas such as rehabilitation of existing barracks and quarters, procurement of arms and ammunition, purchase of vehicles, helicopters, surveillance cameras and maintenance of existing stocks as well as procurement of kits and basic equipment for officers.”

Adelabu, who stated that OYSSTF has donated 66 Hilux vans to security agencies, noted that other areas of concern include the establishment of forensic laboratories and upgrade of all police stations across the state to be information technology compliant, as provided for in the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015.
Adelabu said, “A proper fund base is needed for this transformation and the security level will be tailor-made to suit the economic profile of Oyo State. With proper fund base, Oyo State Security Trust Fund will channel these funds to the weak spots within the state security apparatus.”

Commissioner of Police in the state,  Mr. Abiodun Odude, commended the Governor Ajimobi-led administration for putting OYSSTF and ‘Operation Burst’ in place, saying with this, the government has placed security issues on the front burner. He added that security agencies have been trying their best with government’s support to nip crime and criminality in the bud, noting that security is a collective responsibility of all and sundry.

According to him,  in the last one year, the police “have arrested more than 1,000 members of ‘One Million Boys’ and we have charged over 400 of them to court, ” saying the police need intelligence to work with.

President-General, Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Chief Yemi Soladoye, urged the OYSSTF to identify the peculiarities of each zone of the state such as Ibadan, Oke-Ogun, Oyo, Ogbomoso, and Ibarapa with a view to tackling insecurity headlong.

He advised that eminent people from each of the zones should be captured into sub-committees for their cities in order to ensure the effectiveness of the project.

The town hall meeting was attended by top government functionaries, members of the state executive council, service commanders in the states, royal fathers, religious leaders, traditional leaders, community leaders, sociocultural groups, traders, local security groups, artisan, representatives of market women among others.

  • Bayo Adelabu cheats death

    Bayo Adelabu cheats death

Some trees are cruelly uprooted before they bloom. Some decay after yielding all they can while some are wrecked just as the first fruits of cultivation begin to emerge from the petals. Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Bayo Adelabu, must be heaving a sigh of relief after escaping death by a whisker.

In the prime of life, he emerged unscathed from an accident that could have been a source of sorrow for many. The Ibadan-born man of means had a narrow escape when his convoy was involved in an accident on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway a couple of weeks ago.

After a few days of treatment at an hospital in Abuja, the grandson of the late First Republic politician, Adegoke Adelabu a.k.a. Penkelemesi, is now up and running.

Although the handsome dude is yet to publicly pitch his tent with any political party, expectations remain high that he will join the fray anytime soon.

  • Bayo Adelabu under pressure

No sooner had the “Ready… Set… Go!” thundered in the long distance race to become the next governor of Oyo State than a few big names immediately sped off into the distance, leaving the rest still bent down on the starting line and wondering what had happened.

One of these names that are being bandied is Chief Adebayo Adelabu. The renowned banker is a deputy governor, Corporate Services Directorate at the Central Bank of Nigeria, and a chartered accountant to boot.

Bayo Adelabu is a grandson of the late colourful First Republic politician, Chief Adegoke Adelabu, a.k.a. Penkelemes. Perhaps due to his celebrated heritage, the younger Adelabu has been under pressure to bring his successes in the corporate world to the political arena by contesting the Oyo governorship seat.

Although he has been somewhat reluctant to abandon business for the rather perilous world of politics, the Ibadan ‘big boy’ is keeping his options open. In the meantime, he remains popular in the state through the businesses he has established in Ibadan, the state capital. He has also been careful to steer clear of controversies that could jeopardise his future political ambition.
