  • Ondo tribunal begins hearing of Oke’s petition

The Ondo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has started hearing the petition of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the October 20, last year, election, Chief Olusola Oke.

Yesterday, PDP and Oke presented some of their witnesses at the tribunal.

The witnesses had earlier submitted their statements on oath to the tribunal.

One of them, Mr. Abayomi Oguntimehin, said there was disorderliness in the polling unit where he voted.

Oguntimehin said there was no queue at the unit and people voted without accreditation.

Mr. Kunle Joseph from Igbara Oke, Ifedore Local Government, said there was no accreditation at his polling unit.

Speaking with reporters after the court session, Oke said he was satisfied with the testimonies of his witnesses.

He said he would present the facts of alleged irregularities during the election, adding that he was at the tribunal to get justice.

The former PDP National Legal Adviser said he is challenging the result of the election in 15 local governments.

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and its candidate, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), closed their case on Tuesday. They insisted that the election was “rigged” in favour of the Labour Party (LP).

    Varsity begins session

Students of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) have returned to the campus to resume for the 2012/2013 academic session. The university came alive last week after months of holiday. Freshers besieged the main campus as early as 6am last Monday. Members of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) were on hand to coordinate the registration exercise with the non-academic staff.

The Information and Communication Technology centre and the Abdullahi Fodio Library were designated for online registration, where the students created an account on the university portal, after which the student proceeded to ETF 111 Hall for screening and confirmation.

The registration exercise was hitch-free, but students stayed for long on queue to get registered. Some of the freshers, who spoke to CAMPUSLIFE, were optimistic that the process would not end in disappointment.

Maryam Binji, who was offered Law programme, stated that she was yet to receive confirmation notice, but hopeful that her programme would commence without delay. Abdullahi Kabir admitted into Public Administration department, said he was elated when he received his confirmation.

The freshers’ registration ended last Saturday, while the returning students resumed last Monday.

  • Anambra begins on N800m Onitsha road

THE Anambra State Government yesterday started the reconstruction of Obodoukwu Road, Okpoko which costs over N800 million.

Governor Peter Obi assured the people that he would not rest in his commitment to make Anambra State one of the best in Nigeria.

Also yesterday, Obi visited Golden Oil Industry at Harbour Industrial Zone, Onitsha.

He inspected its existing facilities and the new ones for building 40,000 tonnes feed meal.

Obi said the visit was to ascertain what the company had been doing and examine its request for more land for expansion.

He promised that his administration would assist the company.

The company’s Executive Director , Mr V. N. Dvioedy said Anambra State has not had it so good until Obi became governor.

He noted that from its former sorry state, Onitsah has become a pride under the Obi administration.

The company chief said this has made Onitsha one of the best places to invest in Nigeria.

On the industrial estate, vioedy said it was nicknamed “Atani Lake” because the area was heavily flooded.

But he said all that has become history with the provision of mass infrastructure.

  • And the circus begins… (1)

Feelers from the political scene in recent times, indicate that the ‘battle’ for 2015 has begun in earnest. I use the military term usually associated with warfare because as many in this country would attest to, politics here is like war. And like most battlefields, it’s not a place for the weak and lily-livered.

Anyway, the politicians have stirred from the self-imposed short break they took after the last general elections in 2011 and are gearing up for the next one. The scheming, underground deals and the other things associated with politicking in Nigeria have started. Already, some casualties in this political battlefield have begun to emerge. Last week, the National Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola was removed by a Federal High Court in Abuja, a move that some political observers see as a fall-out of the alleged cold war brewing between President Goodluck Jonathan and his erstwhile godfather, former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

As for the ex-military leader and two time Head of State, its obvious that the old warhorse is up to his old tricks and shenanigans again. When he left office in 2007, I cannot remember Nigerians holding a referendum to pick him as the undisputed kingmaker in the country. But Obasanjo as everyone knows, is like a man with a drum beating in his head- he picks his own tune and he dances to it energetically, unmindful of whether others around him like the music or not. In other words, he does not care about others opinions and does whatever he wants to do, at any cost. He has assumed that role with his usual abraggadocio and domineering ways.

Now, his body language and reports from various quarters show that he’s shopping for a new ‘prince’ to crown in the next political dispensation, having allegedly fallen out with his beloved godson, Jonathan. In this quest, the feelings and desires of the majority of the citizens for good governance that will usher in progress and prosperity in the country, do not count. What Obasanjo wants, Aremu gets.

And there lies the tragedy of this country. For far too long, the political leaders have been grossly unfair to Nigerians. All the scheming and deals struck at those clandestine meetings they usually hold during ‘vampire hours’ (that is at midnight or early hours) are all geared towards one thing: self. It’s all about self-interest, self-aggrandizement, self-preservation and other pecuniary reasons. To this lot, the word ‘people’ which democracy is all about, does not exist.

In fact, the ancient Greeks who invented this form of governance would shake their heads in wonder at the manner in which our politicians have re-invented democracy. Here, it’s more like, ‘government of the ruling class, for the ruling class and by the ruling class.’ But for how long can this state of affairs be sustained? Not too long because the dire consequences of such mis-governance, which is an abnormality in the first place, are becoming too glaring to ignore.

The rate of poverty, unemployment, hunger and other unfortunate fall-outs of bad governance and misuse of resources have reached crisis level. The only way to turn the tide is to put the people back in democracy.

This has been harped on for years by activists, civil society groups, the media and other concerned Nigerians alarmed at the way the country is being run. But most of our politicians, drunk on the power, money and other perks of their high offices have grown blind and deaf to the cries of the long-suffering citizens which have reached the heavens itself. Like Nero, who played music on his fiddle while ancient Rome burnt, the politicians are too busy enjoying these perks to care about the common man.

As some say, it will take a miracle for these people to listen or change. But listen they must because the alternative is too harrowing to contemplate.

  • Before JAMB begins Computer-Based Test

    Before JAMB begins Computer-Based Test

SIR: The decision by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board to adopt the computer-based test method for the conduct of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, is no doubt, laudable.

While some people have argued that the nation was not ripe for the initiative due chiefly to the dearth of infrastructure, epileptic power supply and low ICT literacy level, others reasoned that the idea should be embraced.

In the United States of America, where the Computer-Based Test (CBT) or testing is widely used, it is also known as the “next frontier in testing”. Educators, testing companies and state departments find it useful in the process of transforming paper/pencil tests into technology-based formats.

It’s merits include increased accessibility to many exam sessions within a year, attractive and user-friendly interface, online timer on the display screens, access to help-functions during the test, among others. CBT also enhances fair and precise evaluation of a candidate’s competency, rapid turnaround of results, and more choices as to when and where to take the exam, easier registration and fortified examination security.

JAMB Registrar, Professor Dibu Ojerinde, said the programme would migrate candidates from the use of paper and pencil in examinations to full usage of computers and would guarantee faster release of results; within 30 minutes after taking the examination.

Before JAMB begins implementation, there a few points to ponder over. First, there has not been any evidence that the required infrastructural needs have been put in place. The untold experience suffered by students in the hands of universities that adopted the similar method for admission exercise in 2012 is instructive.

It saddening that most of the candidates registering for the 2013 examination were spillover and casualties of the 2012 exercise who may be the ‘guinea pigs’ of the newly introduced method, as some of the computer assembled by affected institutions were old, erratic and malfunctioned.

There is no known statistics to indicate that many students in public schools are now computer literate to sit for the examination as the cost of computer is still not affordable. The challenge of providing computers for over about two million candidates in a country that is still battling to provide basic food for its people must eb taken into account. Another critical issue is the availability of constant electricity.

JAMB should also ensure that the necessary security checks are put in place. Efforts should be intensified to protect candidates and officials, who could be vulnerable to attacks.

Another factor that should be seriously considered is the peculair needs of the physically-challenged and students with disabilities. These categories of people could be at a great disadvantage if certain things are not provided. Special provisions must be made to accommodate them.

JAMB should take seriously, the recommendation of “The Journal of Emerging Trends in Computing and Information Sciences” (Vol. 3, No. 2, February 2012), which recommends that examination questions prepared for CBT should be made ‘error-free’while the allocated time should also be adequate.

JAMB should embark on massive training, enlightenment and awareness strategies to get candidates and relevant stakeholders to be familiar with the complex CBT operations and clear the grey areas. For now, the stakeholders, most especially the students, appear not to be really informed on what they stand to benefit from the innovation.

Therefore, rather than put a time frame of two years for its full implementation, it should be more flexible and give enough room for self-appraisal, assessment, re-strategizing and better planning.

  • NFF congress begins in Port Harcourt

NFF congress begins in Port Harcourt

The 2012 Annual General Congress of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will begin in Port Harcourt today.

Chairmen of the 36 state football associations in the country as well as top officials of the NFF will converge in the capital to deliberate on issues surrounding Nigerian football in the past year.

The venue of the congress had been dogged with controversy with association chairmen kicking against the choice of Port Harcourt as venue for the congress following comments credited to the Rivers State governor, Chibuike Amaechi accusing the NFF of corruption.

That has now been put to bed and president of the NFF, Aminu Maigari has now voiced his sentiments on the upcoming congress.

“We expect a very good congress in Port Harcourt as we prepare to take our football forward. It has been an eventful year and all members of the Nigerian football family will be sharing ideas on how to move the game forward,” Maigari exclusively revealed to supersport.com.

Rivers State sports commissioner, Fred Igwe also spoke on his expectations ahead of the congress.

“You know decisions that change the face of football in a country are taken at congresses of this magnitude and I am confident that in another one year, Nigerians will say the round leather game has moved one step forward and credit will be given to Port Harcourt for not only hosting a successful congress but creating the serene atmosphere that gave rise to positive growth of the game,” he said.

The 2012 congress of the NFF will come to an end on Friday.

  • Babalakin’s trial begins today

    Babalakin’s trial begins today

After a week of indecision, Bi-Courtney Chairman Dr. Olawale Babalakin (SAN) has agreed to face trial over the N3.4billion allegedly laundered for ex-Governor James Ibori to buy a Challenger aircraft.

Also to face trial are Stabilini Vision Limited, Bi-Courtney Limited, Alex Okoh and Renix Nigeria Limited.

It was learnt that a team of Senior Advocates of Nigeria will defend the suspects, whose trial is likely to take place in the court complex built by Babalakin’s company.

They are to face a 27-count charge in the High Court of Lagos State, Ikeja Division.

The charge borders on the alleged laundering of $11.3million abroad for Ibori through Erin Aviation Account in Mauritius.

The charge sheet, dated November 21, was filed by A.M. Yusuf, Esq., on behalf of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Attorney-General of the Federation.

A top source in EFCC, who spoke with our correspondent in confidence, said: “We have received assurances from Babalakin that he will appear in court for arraignment on Thursday (today). He offered to come for arraignment; we have no reason to doubt him.

“We may, therefore, have no reason to arrest him before trial. What is important is to serve the cause of justice.”

Responding to a question, the source added: “There is an understanding that all the suspects will be at the EFCC office in Ikoyi by 7am and it is from there that they will be taken to court.

“Babalakin has been cooperating with the EFCC in its investigation; there is no problem at all.”

Another source, who also did not want to be named, said Babalakin relocated from Abuja to Lagos on Wednesday evening for his trial.

“He is innocent of the charges but it is normal to arraign any suspect in court. This investigation has been on in the last seven years without anything found against Babalakin.

“The arraignment might be an attempt to break his spirit but justice will prevail at the end of the day.

“It is going to be a major legal battle and we have assembled a crack team of lawyers to defend him and four others.

“Ironically, Babalakin will be arraigned in the same court complex which his company built to taste. That is life, everything has a purpose.”

All the suspects will be arraigned in court for alleged “conspiracy to commit felony to wit: corruptly conferring benefit on account of public action, contrary to Section 516 of the Criminal Code Law, CAP. C17, Laws of Lagos State, 2003.”

They are also to respond to the allegation of “corruptly conferring benefit on account of public action, contrary to Section 98A (1) (a) of the Criminal Code Law, CAP. C17, Laws of Lagos State, 2003”.

The third peg of their trial borders on alleged “retention of proceed of a criminal conduct contrary to Section 17(a) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act, 2004”.

LAWMA begins 24-hr service on Games venues

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 18th National Sports Festival says the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) will begin 24 hours service at the Games venues from Sunday.

Dr. Kweku Tandoh, the LOC Secretary-General, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos that refuse collection would be done at the Games Villages and sports venues.

Tandoh said that “Operation keep Lagos Clean’’ was still in full force, adding that the state would maintain a cleaner environment throughout the festival.

He said that apart from LAWMA other cleaning outfits had also been engaged to assist.

“The operation keep Lagos clean is still in force. LAWMA will begin 24 hours service a day to the opening ceremony to clear dirt.

“Some other cleaning outfits will also assist LAWMA to ensure the work is done well,’’ Tandoh said.

He refuted a claim that the Teslim Balogun Stadium was full of filth, saying that the little refuse visible was from the contractors renovating the edifice for the opening ceremony.

The LOC scribe said that they had not received any information on the arrival of any state contingent for the Games, noting that it was worrisome.

He also said state officials who were supposed to have arrived for meetings before the Games starts had not come.

“The Games Villages opened on Saturday but as I am talking to you, there is no information on whether any state has arrived.

“But I am very sure that the bulk of them will arrive on Sunday,’’ he said.

Tandoh assured that the LOC was getting things ready for the opening ceremony on Nov. 27 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
