  • ‘We beheaded our neighbour to raise money for naming ceremony’

The two brothers arrested for allegedly beheading their neighbour’s 10-year-old son, Joseph Makinde, have said they committed the crime to raise money for a naming ceremony.

Ayodeji Obadimeji, 20 and his elder brother, Saheed, 25, gave gory details of the murder of Joseph, whom they confirmed was the younger brother to their friend, Femi.

They said the boy was first stabbed in the neck before his head was cut from his body with a knife.

Policemen on patrol on November 28 at Shapati bus stop, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, arrested the duo while on their way to collect money from a suspected human parts agent.

According to the suspects, Ayodeji, whose lover had a baby girl a few days before the incident, was contacted for the business by his friend, Sodiq Abefe.

Ayodeji said: “I was desperate for money. I needed money by all means for my daughter’s naming ceremony. My girlfriend was delivered of a baby girl and the naming ceremony was drawing near, but I did not have money to buy ram.

“Sodiq knew that I needed money badly for the ceremony, so he came to me with his friend, Don, and told me to help them deliver a human head to an agent. He said they already had the head and that I should not be afraid since I was not going to kill anyone.

“He gave me a bag to bring on Tuesday to an uncompleted building where we agreed to meet. So, I told my brother about it. At first, he objected, but later agreed to follow me because I have not been to that place before.

“It was an uncompleted building in a hidden street. We got there around 7pm and met Sodiq and Don. They said the human head was no longer available and that we needed to get someone to behead. Sodiq said to make money was not easy. That I should be courageous. He said he and Don would do it for me if I couldn’t do it, adding that we should just get a victim.

“For about 20 minutes that we were there, all the people passing were in groups of three or four. There was no one passing alone that we could easily attack. So, Sodiq suggested that we should go to a busy area to lure somebody.

“It was my brother, Saheed, who went to get someone. Since he’s a Lagos boy, we agreed it would be easier for him to convince someone to follow him to the uncompleted building.

“When he left, I became unsettled. I started experiencing running stomach. I was at the backyard excreting when I heard him saying he had brought Joseph and sent him to do something. He said the boy would be with us in about five minutes.

“The boy came and I heard his voice. I ran back to the building and asked the others why they wanted to kill the boy. Sodiq said to make money was not easy that we had to kill him. He said he had already stabbed the boy in the neck that if we should let him go, he would tell his parents and everyone how we wanted to kill him.

“Realising that he had a point, we agreed that the boy should be killed and Sodiq asked my brother and I to hold his legs because the boy was struggling with him. That was how we held his legs firmly and Sodiq cut his neck. It took about one minute before his head fell off.”

Saheed confirmed that he lured Joseph to the ‘slaughterhouse’ by sending him on an errand to buy a non-alcoholic beverage.

He said he gave the boy N200 to buy two bottles of soft drinks- keep one for himself and bring the other one to the uncompleted building for him.

Saheed went on: “Joseph brought the two soft drinks to the uncompleted building and was drinking his own. I distracted him with a discussion so that Sodiq and Don could take action. As I was still discussing with him, they grabbed him from behind and took him to one of the rooms.

“Sodiq stabbed him in the neck with a knife. We held his legs for Sodiq to cut off his head. Then, his head was put in the bag that Sodiq had given my brother and we left his body in the building.

“Sodiq said we should leave the building in twos, which we did. We went to the bus stop in search of the agent who Sodiq was to give the head and collect our money, N200,000.

“After waiting for a while, Don mounted a motorcycle and later returned with a man he said was the agent. My brother went to meet him and he said he would not pay M200,000 for the head again. He said what he had was N150,000 and Sodiq advised my brother to accept the money.

“Then he said he didn’t have all the money with him. He said he had about N63,000 on him and could only give us N50,000. He said my brother should follow him to a bank to withdraw the rest. My brother refused and insisted that we should all go together. So, it was while we were crossing the road that policemen caught us.”

Police spokesman Chike Oti said operatives of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) Panti, Yaba, Lagos were trailing Sodiq, adding that the suspects would be arraigned after investigation.

  • Suspected cultist beheaded in Delta

    Suspected cultist beheaded in Delta

There was panic yesterday at Ogwashi-Uku, in Aniocha South Local Government of Delta State.

A suspected cultist, identified as Ekene, was beheaded following a cult clash.

Ogwashi-Uku has witnessed an upsurge in cult-related violence and arson. Hoodlums have set ablaze houses in the last few weeks.

The Nation learnt that policemen from Ogwashi-Uku Police Division have arrested four youths for alleged complicity in the murder of Ekene.

It was gathered that Ekene was allegedly killed by a gang of suspected cultists on a reprisal.

A source said the deceased was repeatedly shot before he was killed with an axe at Agidiase quarters.

The source said the murder of Ekene, who was alleged to be a member of Arubagger cult, was a fallout of an earlier fight between the group and Aye cult.

Police spokesman Andrew Aniamaka confirmed the incident. He said he would give details, but did not do so last night.

  • DSP, orderly beheaded during Rivers rerun

DSP, orderly beheaded during Rivers rerun

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) the newly-created 6 Division of the Army in Port Harcourt, Maj.-Gen. Kasimu Abdulkarim, and Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, are at loggerheads over Saturday’s legislative rerun across the three senatorial districts.

The GOC yesterday in Port Harcourt disclosed that two policemen: Alkali Mohammed, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Mobile Police Unit 48, was beheaded along with his orderly by hoodlums, who sntached away their patrol vehicle and weapons. Three policemen escaped, but five were still “missing in action” in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers, where the state’s Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Felix Obuah, hails from.

Wike and Obuah had earlier accused the Army and policemen of killing three PDP members (two in Bodo-Ogoni in Gokana Local Government Area and one in Tai-Ogoni Local Government Area) aiding All Progressives Congress (APC) members to hijack electoral materials.

The GOC, however, declared that the allegations made by some respected politicians regarding deep involvement of soldiers during the elections were false and aimed at tarnishing the army’s image.

To Maj.-Gen. Abdulkarim, PDP leaders, “weighty” allegations that soldiers were involved in ballot box snatching, illegal escort of some politicians, arrest and detention of voters could cause members of the public to view soldiers negatively, hence the need to adequately inform the public on the true perspective. He said the public should consider the allegations as “mere farce to garner sympathy”.

The GOC maintained that the 6 Division remained apolitical, adding that its soldiers provided perimeter defence to ward off hoodlums and miscreants.

He said: “The most brutal incident occurred (during Saturday’s rerun) at Ujju community near Omoku in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA of Rivers State, where a police patrol team was ambushed. In the ambush, 10 policemen scampered into the bush. The Mobile Police organised a rescue mission. Regrettably, the team discovered that DSP Alkali Mohammed of Mobile Police Unit 48 was beheaded along with his orderly. The patrol vehicle was taken away with weapons. Three policemen escaped. Five were missing in action.

“This is the same area where soldiers of 34 Brigade were ambushed on November 20, 2016, where a soldier was killed. Also, on November 21, 2016, four personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were killed and their weapons carted away.

“These attacks are reasonable evidence of violations of breach of law and order which portray the area as a flashpoint. Despite these barbarism, soldiers acted with civility and professionalism, guaranteeing peaceful elections.

“Nigerian Army, as a respected institution with constitutional responsibility to safeguard lives and property, could not watch miscreants and hoodlums abducting, maiming and killing innocent citizens, especially in senseless attacks on uniform personnel.”

Maj.-Gen. Abdulkarim also expressed surprise on the “frivolous” and “baseless” allegations levelled against the Army by politicians on the legislative elections.

He said: “Nigerian Army troops were in no way involved in any form of ballot box snatching; neither were they involved in the escort of politicians as alleged. They acted swiftly in response to security breaches, in order to enforce the law, provide aid to the police and other security agencies, especially in areas like Abonema, Etche, Gokana, Ikwere, Eleme, Tai, Khana and Omoku, among others. These areas have armed men that engaged security personnel.

“Susceptibility of the areas warranted providing security for the electoral officials, voters, international and local observers, in conjunction with other security agencies by soldiers for peaceful elections to thrive in the environment.

“In Gokana Local Government, armed hoodlums engaged the soldiers providing outer perimeter defence for the electorate. In Abonnema, at 0730 hours on Saturday, there were three explosions that created bedlam. Subsequently, 11 NYSC members were abducted along with electoral materials. However, 10 of them were rescued two hours later by the soldiers while one was rescued about eight hours later.

“At Emohua, Mr … abducted five NYSC members with election materials in a Sienna bus. The corps members were rescued while the suspect was handed over to the police. Many shootings were recorded in some communities, such as Bodo-Ogoni (Gokana LGA), the hometown of the Secretary to the Rivers State Government (Chief Kenneth Kobani); B-Dere and Mogho in Gokana Local Government, including snatching of ballot boxes.”

The GOC also maintained that the rerun in the 23 local government councils was adjudged credible, free, fair and peaceful in many parts of the state, describing the accusation of soldiers’ partisanship as a “sham” while assuring that the 6 Division would continue to be apolitical in the discharge of its roles to ensure provision of adequate security in the state.

Wike accused the army and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the police of killing two PDP agents in Bodo-Ogoni on Saturday, hijacking electoral materials and working to deliver APC candidates.

He stated that no matter the use of the army and SARS personnel by the APC-led Federal Government, Rivers state would never be conquered.

The governor said: “I anticipated it. I tried to let the world know that these are the plans of the security agencies.

”In all my political career, I have never experienced this kind of invasion by security agencies. What causes violence is when you give certain persons undue advantage.

”Be assured that we are resisting it. It may take our lives, but we will resist it to the last. That is what is expected, when you are fighting for freedom. You must make sacrifices.

”It is unfortunate that we are congratulating the opposition for winning in Ghana, but here the military men are directly involved in rigging and hijacking of electoral materials.”

“They say they want to give Rivers State Governor problems, but you are not giving Rivers State Governor problems, you are giving Nigeria problems.”

Wike said he had informed an unnamed National Commissioner of INEC and the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the commission in Rivers state, Aniedi Ikoiwak, of the problems in Khana and Gokana LGAs, with an assurance that action would be taken.

The governor, yesterday evening in Port Harcourt, through his Special Assistant on Electronic Media, Simeon Nwakaudu, said: “Soldiers arrested and brutalised Emohua Local Government Caretaker Chairman, in a bid to rig. Military invades Emohua, arrests John Wokoma, CTC Chairman, Emohua LGA, whisks him away to unknown destination. Operation led by Col Ali of the Army, claiming instructions from Brigade Commander. Nigerian Army stops announcement of Emohua results already collated.

“Andoni LGA collation centre at Ngo (council’s headquarters), collation completed, PDP in clear victory, INEC abruptly declares original result sheets missing.”

    •APC condemns barbaric act

Two weeks to the March 19 legislative rerun in Rivers State, masked gunmen at 9 pm on Saturday, beheaded a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Franklin Obi, and killed his wife and 18-year-old son, Bestman.

The gunmen took away the head of Franklin. After shooting him dead, they severed his head and disappeared.

The killings took place at Omoku, headquarters of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government, hometown of the state Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Felix Obuah.

In Omoku last month, 25 persons were killed, with many of them beheaded.

Until his murder at his home on Rutachi Street in Omoku, Obi was the APC’s chairman of Ward 4, the same ward with Obuah.

Police Commissioner Musa Kimo, yesterday, visited the deceased’s family. Kimo described the incident as sad, while the stateAPC, through its Publicity Secretary, Chris Finebone, condemned the barbaric act.

It was learnt some persons in the neighbourhood saw the masked gunmen before the murder, but failed to report to the police or raise the alarm.

A 16-year-old daughter of the deceased, Victory, who was in a room with his elder brother, Bestman, saw her dad beheaded through an opening.

Victory said after killing his parents, the gunmen came into the room and ordered them to leave the room. But she said the killers, annoyed by Bestman’s sluggishness, shot him dead at close range.

APC said: “The killing of our Franklin Obi on Saturday night was shocking, to say the least. It goes to support what we know that the PDP members have been responsible for all the killings in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government.

“Make your deductions: the late Franklin Obi was the APC’s Ward 4 chairman. He managed and moderated the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni APC’s meeting last Thursday in Omoku and by Saturday he was killed and beheaded, with the wife and son also killed.”

The police chief regretted  that some people saw the masked gunmen, but failed to report to the police.

He urged the people to always inform the police, whenever they notice any suspicious movement.

Kimo said: “I am here in Omoku this time on a sad note. It is sad in the sense that we are bereaved. The governor (Nyesom Wike), some security officers and I were in Omoku two weeks ago in search of peace. Unfortunately, violence has continued to pervade, dovetailing into kidnappings and murders.

“On Saturday night, precisely 2100 hours, Mr. Franklin Obi, APC chairman, Ward 4, Omoku, the wife and son were murdered in their house. This is bad. This is a sin and unacceptable.

“I am here to commiserate with the family and to re-strategise and put measures in place to forestall future recurrence.”

The police commissioner said the police would ensure that those behind the dastardly act were arrested and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.

Kimo said investigations were on into killings in Omoku, including the murder of Franklin Obi, his wife and son.

The police chief also visited the Oba (Eze Ogba) of Ogbaland, Sir Chukumela Nnam Obi II, at Omoku.

The first class monarch, who was sad at the shocking killings in Omoku and other parts of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, declared that the killers who did not want him and his people to have peace, would never know peace.

  • ONELGA killings: How 25 victims were murdered, beheaded

ONELGA killings: How 25 victims were murdered, beheaded

Families and eye-witnesses relive the terrifying moments 25 persons were slaughtered like animals at Ogba/ Ndoni /Egbema Local Government  Area of Rivers State (ONELGA).  Precious Dikewoha reports

A WEEK after the killing of their loved ones by yet-to-be identified gunmen suspected to be cult members in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, relatives of the victims are still groaning.

The relatives gave emotional accounts of how their kinsmen were murdered by the gunmen, who invaded their homes. They also painted a grisly account of how 10 heads of the 25 victims, reported to have been killed by the assailants, were chopped off and taken away. The relatives were helpless.

Last week’s invasion was not the first of such in ONELGA as residents had a similar encounter in the run-up to the 2015 general elections when 15 persons were killed by gunmen.  It was in the same ONELGA that 12 persons, including Chief Christopher Adube and his family, were murdered in a day.

On Monday, the atmosphere was not only tense; it was engulfed in fear and anxiety. Some of the residents, who saw reporters and Joint Task Force (JTF) men, were afraid. Many residents had fled their homes for fear of unknown.

The Ajie family on 5, Ndoni Street, lost two of its leading lights – Nwondo and Ahiakwu Ajie. Their father is late.

Their uncle, Elder Benedict Ajie, said: “The gunmen entered our compound by 9: 30pm on that day and started shooting and everybody that was outside ran away.

“It was after we stopped hearing gunshot that we came out from hiding to check what happened. Only for us to see the bodies of my late brother’s children in the pool of their blood and there was nothing we could do.  Then, later, we saw some people crying on the other side of the street.  It was then we discovered that a total of eight young men had been murdered on our street alone.

“The worst thing is that we did not see any police officer until when the gunmen had wreaked their havoc and left the scene. I don’t know those who are behind this evil act but I know that those who are doing this are not bigger than the government. If actually the government is protecting the lives of the people, then they should help us end this bloody act.”

On Elder Samuel Street, where two siblings were reportedly beheaded on house No.4, there was nobody to talk to. The main gate to their house was locked outside.

But, a neigbour, who pleaded for anonymity for security reasons, told reporters that one of beheaded victims was preparing for his Junior Secondary School (JSS III) examination.

According to the source, the gunmen allegedly scaled the fence into the compound before they forced their way into the living room, where they shot and beheaded their victims.

They went away with the heads of the two victims. The neighbour said the offence committed by the victims to warrant their gruesome murder was unknown.

At Uge’s family house on 19 Ume-Imegi Street, the cold attitude of residents showed they were yet to recover from the shock.

The head of the family, Mr. Martins Uge, who lost his son and two tenants, said he has never witnessed the kind of brutal killing that he saw on that fateful day.

According to him, the assailants gained access into victims’ room through the ceiling.

“They killed six young men on this street before they entered my house through the roof. They ransacked everywhere and broke into my son’s (Elechukwu Uge) house and killed him.

“They also forced themselves into the rooms of my two tenants, Anthony Okara, a driver with Agip Company and Emeka John.  When they finished their operation, they shot at my daughter on their way out but she survived it. My son was 31 years old, he was shot inside his room. The two tenants were dragged outside. They did not only kill them but cut off their heads.”

Two other brothers, Eze and Okechukwu Nzeh, were dragged outside their Omueyike Street home and murdered before their aged mother. Their heads were not severed.

Eze and Okechukwu’s mother, Mrs. Blessing Nzeh, said the death of her two sons had turned her to walking corps.

Her words: “We had just finished our night meal when we had gunshots. They came with all kind of weapons. The next thing I heard was a loud bang on my door. They entered and dragged my two sons outside. I was shouting, pleading with them to have mercy. But my pleas did not make any sense to them. In my presence, they shot my two sons and confirmed they were dead before they left.”

The grave of 42-year-old Mr. Emaka Ohiakwu, in front of House 13, Omuchikere Street, was conspicuous. His widow, Mrs. Helen, who was still crying when reporters visited the family, said she was not around when the gunmen killed her husband.

She said: “I got a call that my husband had been murdered by unknown gunmen.  And when I rushed back home, I saw his lifeless body that was the only thing I can say.

“We have been married for the past 20 years and there was not any trace that he was a cultist or that he was involved in any shady deal.”

On Innocent Mazi Street, Bishop Eleanya Ugoji claimed no fewer than 25 persons were brutally killed by the raiders.

He said: “After the devilish operation, we discovered that 25 souls were murdered and 10 of them got their heads cut off. My younger brother and his wife were also murdered.”

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Rivers State Police Command, Ahmad Muhammad, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), confirmed the development.

He said: “The incident is reasonably believed to be a battle of supremacy between rival cult groups in the town. As it is now, the situation is under control as more anti-riot policemen have been drafted to reinforce the existing security in the town.

“The command has made some arrests and those arrested have been undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID).”

    Man ‘beheaded’ in Abia

A man believed to be in his early 30s, Mr. Ahamefula Mba, has been allegedly  beheaded at Umuokwe, Umuhu Ezechi in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State.

  • Girl beheaded in Abia

The beheading of a 17-year-old girl, Chioma Emeka Ikwuagwu, by unknown killers has caused tension between Ameke and Ukome communities in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State.

The late Chioma hails from Ameke but lived with her parents at Ukome, where she was killed.

The bereaved community of Ameke is said to have given Ukome three days to produce their daughter. The notice expired on July 30, thus creating apprehension in Ukome community.

Sources at Ukome said the deceased, who was an SSS3 student of Holy Rosary College, Umuahia, was the first of five children.

Her father, Emeka Ikwuagwu, told reporters that on July 26, he went to collect some corn from one of his farm while his wife, Akunna, led some people to weed their other farm.

Ikwuagwu said Chioma brought food to the farm for her mother and the workers at noon.

He said: “She was asked to go to another farm to collect some vegetables for use later that evening and she never came back. It was the last time she was seen alive.

“When she did not return, her mother went in search of her, only to discover blood everywhere at the farm and she alerted me.

“I immediately organised a search party to look for her around the farm and her lifeless body was found at a nearby spot with palm fronds covering her.

“When we found her, her jeans were drawn down close to her lap, she clutched tightly to her underwear with one hand with machete cuts on her other arm. Her head had been cut off.

“We left the body like that so that the police could see it. They (police) came on Saturday morning to remove the body and deposited it at the City Gate Mortuary, Umuahia, after the Federal Medical Centre rejected it.”

A source said upon hearing the news, Ukome youths searched the bush for the killers.

He said: “They didn’t find anything. The father was compelled by tradition to report the incident to his kinsmen at Ameke, which he did.

“On July 28, they marched on Ukome with wooden gongs and symbolic palm fronds, which they handed down to Ukome people, demanding their daughter or her killers.”

It was gathered that a suspect has been arrested. The man is said to have threatened the family over a piece of land because of a piece of land willed to Ikwuagwu by his late grandmother.

Police spokesman Geoffrey Ogbonna said the command was aware of the matter, but that they are still waiting for full details before starting investigations.

  • Man beheaded in Edo

The headless body of a man was yesterday found at Agip Junction on the Sapele Road in Benin, the Edo State capital.

The blood on the body was still fresh, suggesting that the killing must have occurred in the early hours of the day.

The clothes on the victim indicated that he might be a commercial motorcyclist.

The body has been evacuated and deposited at an undisclosed mortuary.

Shop owners in the area have refused to open for businesses and might have fled to avoid being arrested by the police.

Police spokesman Anthony Airhuoyo said they are working hard to establish the victim’s identity and apprehend his killers.

  • Body of beheaded, limbless man found in Ibadan

Residents of Idi-Osan, Amuloko, in Akanran area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, have been living in fear following the discovery of the body of a man without a head and arms in the area at 5pm last Wednesday.

The body was dumped at the bank of a stream in the area by unknown assailants.

Police were said to have moved it to a morgue at the Adeoyo State Hospital, Ring Road, Ibadan, for further investigation.

The police have reportedly arrested two night guards.

A police source said in confidence that the night guards might have seen those who dumped the body.

The deceased is said to be about 24 years old.

The residents are afraid that the police would arrest more suspects among them.

The state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is handling the matter.

But the acting police spokesman, Daniel Oboyi, could not confirm the story last night.

The police officer said he was yet to be briefed because he just returned from an official trip.
