    Obaseki wins Edo governorship election

    The All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has won the Edo State governorship election based on the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday.

    Obaseki was declared winner of the election after polling 319, 483 votes, while his  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rival, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, garnered 253, 173.

    He edged out Ize-Iyamu with 66, 310 votes in the election held across Edo State on Wednesday.

    A total of 1, 900, 223 voters registered for the election, while 622,039 were accredited.

    The APC won in 13 out of the 18 local government areas of the state and the PDP triumphed in five.

    Votes polled by other political parties are listed below:

    APGA – 876

    ACPN – 3, 184

    ACD – 1,350

    PDC – 1, 289

    LP – 182

    Police raids Ikorodu creeks over abducted residents

    Operatives of the Lagos state police command on Monday raided Ikorodu creeks searching for abducted persons by the so-called suspected vandals who are now militants.

    It was reported that the suspected militants had been shooting all around the area of Igbo-Olomu, Elepete, Ishawo and Ibafo attacking those who they felt were police informants.

    Some of the abducted residents were identified as Moses Kehinde,Odigie Saturday, Kareem Abubakar,Fatai Bambgose.

    It was declared by the abductors that Odigie and Kareem were the main suspects who inform the security Operatives about their activities.

    It was also reported that in 2014 two policemen attached to Owutu police station were also abducted by gunmen. The incident took place after a month in which similar incident occurred during which six officials of the Department of State Security (DSS) were attacked and killed by the gunmen and their bodies was taken away by same gunmen. Their bodies were said to be buried in shallow gravies inside the creeks.

    Some residents of Igbo-Olomu, Ishawo, Elepete area had fled the area for fear of losing their lives. Some affected residents also lamented that life had become unbearable for the activities of the militants.

    According to the residents, the militants has been causing atrocities in the community, like raping, kidnapping, vandalisation of pipe lines and also stealing their foodstuffs and domestic animals.

    A resident identified as Mike Faleke said he had left the area with his family due to the increase in illegal activities of the militants.

    The Lagos State police Public Relation Officer (PRO), Dolapo Badmos, said the State command would continue to maintain improved visibility in the area as well as other parts of the state.

    Following heightened tension in the area, a combined team of soldiers attached to “Operation Awase” have joined in the search for the abducted victims.

    The Igando customary court, Lagos has dissolved a four year old marriage between Livinus Uwa and Chinyere Uwa over the husband accusing the wife of stealing his money.

    Mr. Livinus made it known to the court that he married a thief as a wife and urged the court to dissolve the marriage between him and his wife because of her act of stealing money from his wardrobe.

    According to the report: “I married a thief, on several occasions, my wife stole money from my wardrobe, rendering me broke. The last time she burgled my room and stole N350, 000.

    “I reported the theft at the police station and she confessed to the theft, but the money was not recovered.

    “I have reported all her attitudes and stealing habits to both families, they called her, but she refused to change.’’

    He made it known that his wife has refused to appear in the court after several callings and also added that she has been appearing and disappearing since they married.

    “When she was pregnant, she left the house to an unknown destination and came back after she was delivered of the baby.

    “She abandoned our baby when she was 10-month-old; I have to engage a baby sitter to take care of her.

    When the baby was two years, I enrolled her in school and my wife reappeared,’’ he said.

    Livinus described his wife chinyere as a lazy and dirty fellow and also pleaded to the court to dissolve the marriage language since he can no longer cope with her stealing and lazy act anymore.

    The president of the court Mr. Adegboyega Omilola dissolved the marriage since the wife has refused to appear in court.

    It was made known that throughout the duration of the case Chinyere has refused to appear in court.

    It was declared by Omilola: “The marriage between Livinus Uwa and Chineye Uwa is hereby dissolved from today, both parties are no longer husband and wife, they are free to go their separate ways without any hindrances and molestation.’’

    Marouane Fellaini, Manchester United midfielder has encouraged the Reds to rise up after falling to a third defeat of the season to Watford on Sunday Afternoon.

    After the defeat in the Europa league on Thursday,United still fell in 3-1 defeat with Watford at Vicarage stadium after goals from  Etienne Capoue, Juan Camilo Zuniga and Troy Deeney for the hosts, with Marcus Rashford scoring  for United.

    Fellaini in an interview with MUTV said, “At half-time, the manager told us to come out and play with confidence and we did that by grabbing the goal, we played with tempo and we need to start doing that from the first minute.

    “In the second half, we were much better. We kept the ball, created chances and played forward. We got back into the game at 1-1 but then we gave away the second goal by giving them too much space and not pressing the ball.”

    The second Watford goal came as a sucker blow after Rashford had leveled from close range.

    “Yes it (the mood) is low but we are men and we must stand up together and show ourselves,” said Fellaini.

    “To lose was a tough moment but we must be ready to go again on Wednesday. We need to focus. At the moment heads are down but, as I said, we must stand together and fight and show that we are confident.”

    He has been the subject matter of many tweets after a photograph showed he was putting on a Manchester United Jersey.
    It was also confirmed by Musa’s close friends, that he was a very big fan of Cristiano Ronaldo, the European footballer of the year and a big fan of Manchester United as well.
    He was also said to be attached to the number 7, his jersey number for both club and country because it was Ronaldo’s number when he was with United.

    Police kill motorist in Lagos

    A motorist was allegedly killed by a mobile escort police officer who fired a gun shot into the air in order to disperse vehicles in traffic at Doyin bus stop in Orile in Lagos.

    The death of the victim simply identified as Fatai, prompted his colleagues to stage a protest against the killer.

    According to one of the protesters, the ugly incident occurred on Sunday, throwing the wife and children of the deceased into mourning.

    “He was the bread winner of his family and he has been killed leaving behind, his wife and five children. Who will take care of them?” lamented the protester, who identified as his friend.

    Speaking about the incident, a trader who witnessed the incident, Ebere Madu, noted that he was attending to his customers when he suddenly heard a gunshot. “The whole place turned to disarray as people ran helter shelter, thinking it was arm robbers attack,” Madu recounted.

    However, the accused Police personnel reportedly abandoned the vehicle he was escorting and fled the scene immediately he realized that someone was badly hit by the shot he fired into the air.

    The Nation correspondent gathered that the occupants of the vehicle were handed over to the Police at Orile Division by some young men in the area.

    The corpse was promptly taken to the Orile Police Division.

    84 LASU students sanctioned over indecent dressing

    The Lagos State University authorities (LASU) issued 84 students warning letters for indecent dressing and also disqualified a student who was among the candidate who was to contest in the forthcoming student union election.

    According to the breakdown analysis, eight among the culprit are final year students,43 in 100level,20 in 200level,and three in 300level.

    In the list of students sanctioned, it showed that 24 students are in faculty of Management Science, 18 from faculty of sciences, faculty of Education and Social Sciences were recorded as 11 students each and the faculty of communication has four students.

    It was reported that the Students Affair Department (DSA) of LASU gave the letter to the students for going against the dress code of the institution.

    It was also gathered that one of the disqualified student was to contest for the presidential post of the Lagos State University Student Union (LASUSU).

    The 300Level Economic Education Department Yusuf Wasiu Omolola the presidential candidate was disqualified for concealing his suspension at the Federal College of Education, Akoka.

    It was alleged that Yusuf was suspended from the college for participating in cultism in the year 2012.”There was no documentary evidence to prove he has been cleared of his allegation and suspension from the college”.

    ‘’The students have been magnanimously pardoned by the university authority and were warned to desist from the act of indecent dressing, henceforth or face disciplinary action, Centre for Information, Press and Public Relations (CIPPR) statement noted’’.

    He was given the opportunity to free himself by voluntarily opting of the LASUSU presidential contest.

    ‘’Mr. Yusuf, Wasiu Omotola was given several opportunities to redeem himself by voluntarily and honourably opting out of the LASUSU presidential race.

    It was also recorded that he refused to complete the security background form made for all the LASUSU contestants, the Director Student Affairs DSA said.

    The presidential contestant (Yusuf) remains disqualified pending when he can provide evidence that the allegation against him is no true.

    Dozens Killed in Italy quake

    Not less than 37 people have been killed and many injured in Italy after an earthquake hit Accumoli and Amatrice towns.

    This was confirmed by Fabio Curcio, head of Italy’s Civil Protection  Department on Wednesday morning,  Associated Press (AP) reports.

    According to reports, the two towns of  Accumoli and Amatrice were struck around 3;36 a.m local time when most residents were already asleep.

    The mayor of Amatrice re-affirmed that a large portion of that town had been destroyed and that residents had been buried under the rubble of collapsed homes and buildings.

    The Civil Protection Department labeled the earthquake as “severe,” as reports of power and communications outages and ruptured gas lines added to the difficulties facing emergency responders.

    ANSA reports that the quake was felt across four regions of central Italy: Lazio, Umbria, Abruzzo and Marche.

    Soldiers, KAI officials clash in Lagos

    Armed soldiers on Thursday morning clashed with some Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) personnel at Oju-Elegba bus-stop in Lagos.

    An eyewitness told The Nation that the conflict was caused by a KAI official who slapped and tore a man’s cloths for moving beside their parked van.

    It was later discovered that the assaulted man is a soldier who merely dressed in ‘mufti’.

    The soldier quickly contacted the nearest barracks and a clash ensued.

    The KAI officers quickly fled from the scene, throwing away their uniforms and caps in the process.

    The angry soldiers broke the KAI vehicle windscreen and deflated its tyres.

    Policemen later arrived the scene and restore peace and order.

    The West Ham united football club has completed the signing of the Swansea city player Andre Ayew for the club record fee of $20.5m.

    The Ghanian player scored total number of 12 goals for Swansea during last season.

    He signed a four-year contract and told the club website; “I am very proud and happy to be at this magnificent club.

    “I am happy to be playing for these fans and I hope to make the people very happy here.

    “The club have a lot of ambition and have a great manager. They want to become a bigger club every year and with the new stadium and a new training ground, you can feel they are moving onto another level and I want to be part of this project.

    “I want to train hard, do my job and show that I deserve to play for West Ham United. I want to give back to the manager and the fans the confidence they are showing me, Ayew reiterated.

    The transfer was also confirmed by the Hammers’ co-chairman David Gold  on Twitter, “Andre Morgan Ayew, also known as Dede Ayew is a Ghanaian international, joins West Ham on a four year deal.”
