Ododo, Bello’s redemption gift to Kogi

    • By Emmanuel Eyitayo

Today, January 27, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State marks his first anniversary in office. Very few people who experienced a Governor Yahaya Bello, his predecessor and godfather, would ever repose any iota of possibilities in a successor that he had brought into office singlehandedly. Yet, to those who still question if good things can ever come from unbelievable places, Ododo is your answer. Despite the circumstances of his enthronement, Ododo has doused tensions, he has led with grace and honour.

A focused leadership that prioritize repairs of critical social infrastructure. The reason cries of non-payment of salaries are no longer heard is not far-fetched as it is a problem that only regular, proper payments could ever speak to. Ododo’s name is rarely touted in everyday conversations in the state because the governor is not the only thing happening as many businesses all over towns are sprawling and rebuilding with a bursting renewed breath of life. Such is the unexpected treasure that Kogi has found in Ododo.

From total obscurity had Yahaya Bello, the erstwhile governor, blatantly brought a seemingly rustic yet unassuming Usman Ododo to become the flag bearer of the ruling APC in the 2023 Kogi gubernatorial elections against power mongers like Edward Onoja, Asuku and others. An election he would go on to win albeit with a lot of tension and acrimony. Rumors of a divided house resultant upon the outcome of the APC primaries soon fizzled out.

A credit to Bello that a man seen as bad can do real good once his stakes are high. A key weakness of Bello is his ever basking in the euphoria of his fiefdom of political jobbers which he had built around himself. A conspicuous testament to this was his comportments whilst he contested the APC presidential primaries against President Bola Tinubu. His estimate of himself was so bogus he not only refused to step down but also disputed the outcome for which he was prodded on as the White Lion.

No sooner had Bello been sworn into the position that he had won only by sheer luck than he was being eulogized as “White Lion, the Godsent” by his political bootlickers. One would think he would use the power for good to the glory of God. He appointed unrefined, desperate hooligans and made them overnight millionaires with oversized office portfolios. Fear and doom reigned supreme as workers and retirees groaned and died while waiting in lines to get whatever percentage Bello in his imperial majesty would pay as their salaries each months that passed. Suffice to say Bello’s first project, and perhaps the only in all of his first year in 2016, was demolition. He demolished the roundabouts across Lokoja and never was he able to complete their rebuilding till his term would lapse.

This is not to undermine what he would later go on to achieve in the health, education and road infrastructure but a government of decency and lucid principles would have had those flagship projects completed; the roundabouts and the plethora of gatehouses leading to the government house that they themselves had provoked.

Aside the general perception of Bello as highly corrupt, desperate and underperformed, there is now the ensuing epiphany of positive angle of his that Kogi people are becoming more loving of. Unlike what we have seen of the Godfatherism phenomenon across states, he seemed to have hit the choice his successor right out of the pack. He has also by the last election, by hook or by crook, destroyed the detrimental ethic dominance of a single tribe in a heterogenous polity as Kogi’s. There are those who think different because governance as is currently in Kogi is yet jaundiced as comparable to most states. Yet, one must value what one has in the now given what one had had before.

Ododo may not come off as a super smart of the moulds of Nasir El Rufai, Babatunde Raji Fashola, Seyi Makinde, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, or the then governor Bola Tinubu, etc., yet it must not be dispelled with the wave of a hand that these are rare politicians in that they only surrounded themselves with people of ideas, character and pedigree and not political nincompoops and local thugs. This is telling when you look at what became of the careers of the cabinet members of these other governors as compared to Yahaya Bello’s. In fact, had Yahaya Bello been a talents man, he probably would not have messed himself up as he has over graft charges with the EFCC. There can be the arguments of the right people not coming into politics or government, but examples are rife of highly successful and educated Kogians who contributed immensely to Ododo’s elections but are completely sidelined for the Bello’s standards of incompetent and barely educated folks. These thugs shield the governor from meeting greater minds and personalities because Bello had rendered him rather choice-less.

Voices of reason must be concertedly loud against building tomorrow with anything less than the best of today’s people. What makes the difference for Obasanjo, Tinubu, Saraki, Kwakwanso and El Rufai is the quality of those that they surround themselves with, not just the necessary evil of sycophants. The great states worthy of emulation in Nigeria are as great as the quality of those who lead the state. Ododo must refrain from the Bello’s culture of resentment for talents and character if his being governor would be historically indelible. This is the only way this administration and Kogi people can measure up in the comity of states. It is in the interest of all that on the subsequent anniversaries of Ododo’s government, greater positive stories would continue to be told.

Under a year, Governor Ododo has completed the Zone8-Kaduna Road dualization, Zone8-Crusher Road, awarded close to 10billion naira rural roads, awarded the contract for the construction of Lokoja Ultra Modern Market, awarded contract for eight intra-township roads, disbursed bursary grants, personally mediated in highly sensitive inter-tribal tensions amongst his many commendable efforts. Security is no longer stronger in the news than in reality under Ododo. It is the contrast of these myriads of fair achievements against what used to be and the fact that good people or government must be commended genuinely by those affected and not those desperate for government patronage because only then would government have the good motivation to continue to do good.

  • Ex-Kogi governor Bello not instigating military takeover of power, says media office

Ex-Kogi governor Bello not instigating military takeover of power, says media office

Former governor of Kogi state, Yahaya Bello, is not behind calls for military take over of power in the country, it was learnt on Tuesday.

Bello’s media office made this known in a statement in Abuja, signed by Ohiare Michael.

The office raised the alarm and said it has uncovered a plot to allegedly label Bello as a security threat.

It insisted: “Bello has no hand and will never be interested in any act that tends to destabilize the country or disturb the peace, harmony and greatness of our dear nation.”

It called on the security agencies to probe the allegations of Bello’s  involvement in instigating military take over of power in the country and get to the root of the matter.

They urged members of the public to disregard the falsehood and its peddler “rally support behind Mr President who is taking every necessary step to return our nation to greatness.”

According to the statement: “Former Governor Yahaya Bello is a patriot and democrat par excellence who will never do anything to upset Nigeria’s democratic status.”

The statement titled: “Plan to falsely label Yahaya Bello a security threat uncovered” reads: “We have uncovered a high-wired plan by some disgruntled enemies of the nation and persons on the Project Bring Down Yahaya Bello, to frame him up as one of the sponsors of the #EndBadGovernance protests across the country.

“We wouldn’t have bothered to respond to a clout-chasing blackmailer and blackmail pawn, a hired gun in the hands of some unpatriotic Nigerians, Jackson Ude, who published a fake, malicious and unintelligent report about an imaginary involvement of His Excellency Alh Yahaya Bello in the ongoing protests across the country.

“But it is pertinent to respond to the tirades of falsehood by the writer because it borders on national security. Our resolve is further strengthened by the condemnable act of some protesters displaying the flags of other nations.

“We consider the claims by the discredited Jackson Ude as reckless and irresponsibly malicious. Yahaya Bello is a patriot who had devoted his time, resources and energy to building a united and prosperous Nigeria.

“It was Yahaya Bello who acted swiftly to resolve a major problem between the North and the South, which would have caused a major crisis in Nigeria.

“What threatened our fragile unity was resolved amicably on the negotiation table provided by Alh. Yahaya Bello when he mediated between the Northern food transporters and their Southern counterparts and brought them together as food exchange between the two regions was threatened. That move earned so much commendations by leaders of the country at that time.

“In the build up to the 2023 Presidential poll, a number of impediments and political cum economic landmines were laid on the road, including the Naira Redesign Policy. It was the same Yahaya Bello with some of his colleagues then that dared the system and secured the judgement that set that aside at the Supreme Court. It was a landmark intervention at a time that the nation was almost collapsing.

“In the presidential poll, Alh. Yahaya Bello mobilized Kogites massively to deliver victory for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. Can the masterminds of his persecution show the world the results in their state?

“He also mobilized the youth of the nation as the Youth Mobilization Committee Chairman because of his faith in the leadership capacity of Mr President.

“Jackson Ude is a notorious blackmailer whose stock in trade is to manufacture fake news that target politically  exposed persons with a view to milking them and also to serve the interests of his paymasters who are anti-democratic forces and enemies of Nigeria.

“His latest post on social media where he made ridiculously outrageous claims of Yahaya Bello’s involvement in a phantom scheme to instigate a military coup is a further demonstration of the antics of some powerful people to ensure they put a wedge between the President and Alh. Yahaya Bello.

“We are not unaware of this hireling’s connection with criminal interests who engage him to do their dirty political errands.  With the multiple cases of defamation hanging on his neck, it is not difficult to understand the criminal blackmail enterprise run by Jackson Ude and his online army of fake news purveyors.

“No sane person should take serious, anything posted by this serial blackmailer who is, essentially, a persona non grata in Nigeria.

“Former Governor Yahaya Bello is a patriot and democrat par excellence who will never do anything to upset Nigeria’s democratic status. More importantly, His Excellency Yahaya Bello invested his considerable energy, time and resources in supporting the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to whom he has remained loyal and committed to this day.

“We call on the Police, Department of State Services, and other relevant agencies to investigate the claims of this serial blackmailer with a view to bringing him to book. This is a matter of national security, which must not be taken lightly.

“We will take all necessary legal actions to get Ude to answer for his crimes. For the records, even in the worst of times, HE Yahaya Bello has remained committed to the success of the All Progressives Congress government.

“He will continue to work for the progress, development and stability of Nigeria even in his private capacity. He is committed to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and will continue to do his utmost to support the president’s administration.

“The intelligence agencies of Nigeria are not incompetent. They don’t need criminal minded elements to unravel  treasonable activities. We urge them to zero in on the unpatriotic Nigerian and get to the roots of his claims. We have confidence in the security community to do a good job.

“We state here categorically, unequivocally, and in the strongest of terms, that HE Alh Yahaya Bello has no hand and will never be interested in any act that tends to destabilize the country or disturb the peace, harmony and greatness of our dear nation.

“We urge the general public to disregard the falsehood by Jackson Ude and rally support behind Mr President who is taking every necessary step to return our nation to greatness.”

Bello vs EFCC: Case transfer request to be heard in open court – CJ

The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, has directed that the request by former Governor Yahaya Bello, for the transfer of the alleged money laundering case instituted against him by the EFCC  to Kogi, be heard in open court.

In a letter, addressed to Bello’s counsel, Abdulwahab Muhammed, SAN, and Musa Yakubu, SAN, the CJ drew their attention to a pending appeal in the case.

The pending appeal is between Yahaya Adoza Bello Vs Federal Republic of Nigeria (FRN) wherein the defendant had sought a consequential order remitting the case to the chief judge for reassignment.

The letter, signed by Special Assistant to the CJ, Joshua Ibrahim-AJI, said as a result of this, it would be improper to take any step that would be tantamount to preempting the outcome of the appeal.

“There is documentary evidence of a pending appeal in the case Yahaya Adoza Bello Vs FRN filed on 17/05/2024 wherein the defendant as appellant has sought a consequential order remitting the case to the Chief Judge for reassignment.

“It is not proper to take any step that will be tantamount to pre-empting the outcome of the appeal.

“The main issue raised is jurisdictional in nature and will be more appropriately decided by the court.

“The matter should therefore be presented in open court,” the CJ stated.

Tsoho observed that the main offence allegedly bordered on conversion of the state’s funds to purchase property in Abuja, and that the filing of the charge could either be in Abuja or Lokoja.

He referred to two ongoing cases before the FHC in charge number: FHC/ABJ/CR/550/22 FRN Vs Ali Bello and another, and another charge in FRN Vs Ali Bello and 3 others, where a similar request for transfer was made and the lower court refused the application.

The EFCC charge against the former governor is currently before the trial judge, Justice Emeka Nwite and the matter had been adjourned until July 17 for hearing.

Fatimo Bello  has openly expressed her confidence  to make hay in the table tennis event  of  the forthcoming  2024 Olympic Games in France.

The 27-year-old Bello, a back-to-back National Sports Festival champion (Edo 2021 & Delta 2023), clinched one of the four slots at the continental qualifiers in Kigali, Rwanda

Bello’s journey has been marked by resilience and determination. Her ranking soared after a remarkable performance at the 2022 ITTF Africa Cup, making her the highest-ranked Nigerian female player globally. Although her rating dropped in 2023 due to inactivity, she persevered and secured her spot in Paris by defeating Algeria’s Lynda Loghraibi in the qualifiers.

Reflecting on her journey, the 143rd -ranked player in the world emphasized her love for the game and the privilege of representing Nigeria.

“When people are talking about going to the Olympic Games, it was not part of the reason I started playing table tennis because I love the game and the encouragement from my father and brother inspired me to put more effort into the game,” she said. “Even when my game was going down, especially at the last African Games in Ghana, I never doubted my ability because being part of the Nigerian national team is a rare privilege so I cherish it a lot.

“Particularly in a nation of millions of players, and for you to make the team is not an easy task. I knew that if I was able to be part of the team, going to Kigali would surely give me the chance to be part of the Olympic Games,” she added.

Ahead of her Olympic debut, Bello remains focused on making an impact: “I am aware of the challenge ahead at the Olympics, where more stars are competing, and I am not going there just to add to the numbers but to make an impact.

“Many senior players have been advising and supporting me, and I am grateful for their guidance. I am more familiar with the terrain now, having taken a longer route to qualify for the Olympics,” Bello said.
