The 22-year-old just penned a deal with United Arab Emirates side, United FC.

“Knowing the honour that awaits us if we beat our opponents to qualify for the group stage, we are going to fight for everything in the field of play to go home happy. We made two mistakes in Benin and will not want a repeat. They should expect a good fight from us the way they also fought in Benin,” he said.

  • Bendel Insurance: Fans hail Obaseki, Shaibu for team’s return to NPFL

Fans of Bendel Insurance Football Club have hailed Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu, for initiating reforms which spurred the club’s resurgence and eventual return to Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), after 11 years.

Bendel Insurance gained promotion to the elite league after an excellent outing with three wins at the Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 8 Playoffs, which held in Aba.

A cross-section of fans of the club, who spoke with journalists, hailed Governor Obaseki’s clear vision for the club which brought about the impressive outings during the NNL season as well as during the playoffs.

Mr. Ovbiosa Charles, said the club’s promotion came  as remarkable as it is emotional for anyone who knew the club in its heydays, noting “I sincerely thank the Edo State Government for responding speedily to the cries of our people for the return of Bendel Insurance to the NPFL.”

“This promotion has been long overdue. Bendel Insurance is one of the first set of clubs to play in the Nigerian topflight division in the 1970s. So, I was wondering where we got it all wrong that the club had to be in relegation for 11 years. For spearheading the campaign that returned the team to the professional league, Governor Obaseki and his team have done us proud,” Ovbiosa added.

Another fan, Mr. Barnabas Efosa, hailed Governor Obaseki for his role in returning the club to its past glory, noting that the impressive performance of the team after its rebranding by the governor, showed that the state government really does have good plans for sports development in the state.

He said it would be delightful to watch the team take on opponents in the topflight division at the home ground in Benin City.

“As we await the completion of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, I can’t wait to see Bendel Insurance play on home ground. For allowing the deputy governor to spearhead the rebranding of the team, Governor Obaseki has proven to us that he is a leader who is interested in things that will benefit the people.”

Peter Odion, a sports analysist said the return of Bendel Insurance to the professional football league will put Edo State back on the spotlight in sports and boost the state’s economy, as it will attract more investors, sponsors and development.

    Akpala joins Karabukspor

Having played on loan at Karabukspor in the 2013/14 campaign, former Bendel Insurance forward Joseph Akpala (28) has left Werder Bremen on a full time basis, joining the Turkish Super Lig club on a three-year-deal.

The 28-year-old was loaned to Karabukspor in January after falling down the pecking order at Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen.

Known by his admirers as the Little Joe, Akpala was a popular name in Lagos State, as he banged goals for the Pepsi Football teams he played for and Bendel Insurance in the Nigeria Premier League. His first professional contract came in April 2003 with Bendel United Football Club, a Division One club in Benin City. He later joined Bendel Insurance FC, Benin City in the Premier Division of the Nigerian Premier League, in February 2005. He was to finish as joint top scorer with 13 goals in 19 games.

Akpala started his European career at Charleroi Sporting Club in the Belgian Jupiler League in January 2006. In the 2007/2008 Belgian League he topped the scorers chart with 18 goals. On 18 July 2008, Akpala joined Club Brugge signing a contract until 2013. His wonderful and predatory exploits was spotted by the then Super Eagles gaffer Austin Cerezo Eguavoen, who was always handing him call-ups to the team so as to understudy the big boys.

He made his official debut for Nigeria on September 6, 2008 against South Africa. Akpala scored his first goal for his homeland in a game against France in which the Super Eagles won 0–1 in Saint Etienne.

The forward returned from summer break and was spotted training with Werder Bremen during pre-season ahead of the start of the 2014/2015 German Bundesliga season and was assigned with the jersey number 35, but his future was always uncertain. And in late July, he told a popular radio station that his future will be sorted out before the transfer window closes.

SL10 reported that he spent the last season out on loan at Karabukspor, making eleven appearances and banging four goals.

    • Resumes training with Bendel Insurance

Bendel Insurance left full-back Erhun Obanor has spoken of his experience at the just concluded African Nations Champions (CHAN) in South Africa, stressing that he has never stopped given gratitude to God for his mercies over him.

The former Paulson player returned to Benin after the CHAN outing and he has started training with Bendel Insurance as they prepare for the Nigeria National League (NNL) new session.

“I thank God for this opportunity, and for the chance he has given to me, it was a big experience because the national team is a stepping up of one’s career, so I have learnt many things. From Eguaveon to Keshi they have taught me many things and the things I saw in the national team will count as an advantage for me to replicate it in my team as the experience was worthwhile,” Obanor said.

Reacting to Nigeria’s Quarter Final match against the Black Stars where the Ghanaians were one man down for a long spell, many Nigerian football followers felt the Eagles should have won the match with their one man advantage.

“That is football for you; you win some and lose some. I cannot really say what happened,” Obanor said.

He then excused Eagles’ goalkeeper Chigozie Agbim’s poor outing at the tournament and expressed confidence that the goalie would bounce back.

As Bendel Insurance prepares for the new season expected to kick off this weekend, Obanor said: “I want to say that we need their support, come Saturday (today), they should come and cheer us to victory as without their support we the players cannot do anything, all we need is just their support to do the club proud.”

Oshiomhole inaugurates team to reposition Bendel Insurance

From , OSemwengie Ben Ogbemudia , Benin

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has inaugurated the Interim Management Committee of the Bendel Insurance Football Club with a charge to reposition the club to restore its lost glory.

Speaking at the inauguration in Benin City, yesterday, Oshiomhole said: “I think that even my worst critic will agree that we have made some progress in the area of infrastructure particularly in education, roads, job creation, rural and urban electrification, provision of water even in the most difficult terrain. We made some investments in sports, the new look Ogbemudia Stadium, and several other things we have done.

“But the area in which I cannot claim to have done so much or that we have achieved anything significant is in the area of repositioning Bendel Insurance. Not because I do not appreciate the team or because I do not love football. I am fanatical about football, yet I am not able to demonstrate this passion in terms of getting Bendel Insurance to the top where it was before”, he said.

Oshiomhole disclosed that the government has tried some approaches which have not worked, adding “we have been troubled by the situation in Bendel Insurance and I know that just throwing money at a problem does not solve the problem . Management goes beyond provision of money and nobody is going to give what he does not have. You cannot manage if you don’t have the skill in a particular area of business”, he noted.

He said:“We are blessed in this state with seasoned people who have made their mark not only in Nigeria but outside the shores of this country. Why should we have a collection of such and we are still in the kind of situation that we are. As they say better late than never.

“We must try and do things differently if we are going to have a new outcome. It is as a result of this that we have reflected and we need to rebuild the house from the scratch, not patching it, because at times patching a dilapidated building might be more challenging than building a new house.

“Help us to rebuild a complete new team. Whatever we can do we will do within our limited resources. But I also believe that we all know that funding football is not like funding government agencies. It ought to be as independent as possible.

“In this committee, beside the Secretary to the Government who is the Chairman who we have nominated to reflect the importance we attach to this committee, one that also is strategic so that whatever you discuss, he understands the limitation of government. He also understands the commitment of government and there would be no gap between what you want us to do and getting that conveyed to us. Otherwise this would have been for people not in government,” the Governor added.

“We have an open mind and I have no doubt that you help us to lay the foundation for a new beginning. There are lots of issues you need to address: what is the financial status of the company. You might look at the possibility of rebuilding a new team rather than all these transfers”.

Responding, the Chairman of the Committee and the Secretary to Edo State Government, Professor Julius Ihonvbere said the committee would do all within its ability to refocus a team that was once the darling of all.

He said: “We want to assure you that we know that the tenure of this Management team is limited, we would do all we can to live up to expectations and fulfill those terms of reference that you have outlined.”

The committee has three months to conclude its assignment.
