  • Benefits of recreation

In the busy and hectic life of today, not everybody has the time for leisure. Still leisure remains a very important part of life writes, OYEYEMI GBENGA-MUSTAPHA

There are many benefits packed into the proverb- All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. It means that without time off from work, a person becomes both bored and uninteresting. This could have negative effects on both the systemic and psychological health.

It is very true in the context of our modern civilisation. According to a university Don, Prof Olubukola Adefule-Ositelu, the lifestyle of many Nigerians, especially in cities and urban areas is becoming worrisome because such breaks them down easily, and could be part of the underlying reasons for the spike in depression, and suicide cases. She said: “It seems as if we all are a part of the rat race. It is essential for all of us to get out of this rat race at least for an hour or so and turn our mind towards something else which is quite different from the daily routine of life.

“Participating in leisure and recreation activities can help you better manage stress and reduce depression. Leisure provides you the chance to find balance in your life; it also puts you in control of how you’re spending your time, which is an important consideration because you may feel overwhelmed by obligations”.

Prof Adefule-Ositelu explained that leisure is activity chosen in relative freedom for its qualities of satisfaction. Leisure is a multi-dimensional, contextual, and individual concept. What counts as leisure differs from person to person, adding, “People should first ask the question- what it means to have? Leisure means to be free from endless rounds of labour; to pursue what you want; to spend your time in voluntary, pleasurable ways; or to have freedom to explore and accept your place in the world.”

The benefits of leisure, according to her, includes bringing a balance to one’s life; relaxation; self-improvement; cultural/family stability and interaction; escape, novelty, complexity, adventure, excitement, and fantasy and reducing stress. So also, Leisure provides rest and relaxation to our mind and body. To turn one’s mind to something else that one enjoys doing is a happy end to a day’s work. One can easily forget the tension and the pressure at the place of work and divert the mind in a creative and constructive manner.

Prof Adefule-Ositelu said in order to have a work-life balance; one must partake in leisure activities while they are not working. Therefore many people do recreational activities in opposition to work. Recreation is a narrower component of leisure. These activities provide pleasure/satisfaction and restore us mentally/physically.

“Other benefits of leisure are enhanced immune systems, improved memory, improved self esteem, and better quality of sleep. It is quite important to relax. So much of how we perceive our world is through our brain, and stress affecting our brains can really affect how we view people and the world around us. So finding good hobbies is not only fun, but they can refresh the mind and body; assist one in staying healthy, active and happy. It is a proven fact that spending time doing the things that we enjoy can help delay signs of aging and the pleasure in participating can lead to positive feelings that can help fight against some illnesses,” she added.

And for those who believe living a routine life, especially work that involved little or no stress, and hence has no need to break the chain, Prof Adebule-Ositelu said normal is so boring and hence doing something which is different from the routine is essential to get rid of the boredom that could develop from leading such a life.

She said there are various ways of spending the leisure time. One can engage himself in a hobby which he enjoys such as reading, gardening, stamp collecting, photography, cooking, social work or anything else, “Nowadays, people are busy with new found hobby of blogging. Every hobby enlightens the mind as one always keeps learning new things. Reading broadens our outlook and often shows us a side of life that we have never been exposed to.

“Gardening not only gives us a lot of physical exercise but also teaches us to appreciate the unique beauty of nature. Stamp collecting arouses our interest in various countries and we also get to learn a lot about them. Photography allows one to be creative and social work gives immense satisfaction as one person helps another person to improve his life. Thus every hobby provides a welcome relief from one’s work. It is the one hour of the day when one can do what one has always wanted to do, but never finds the time to do in one’s busy life. In fact, cleaning up one’s cupboard, kitchen, living room or even toilet which one has not done for a long time can be an interesting experience.

“One comes across things which one had considered lost and forgotten. Those objects might be linked with pleasant or unpleasant experiences of the past and one can just sit and go down the memory lane, which in itself is a very pleasurable experience. We get an immense sense of satisfaction and achievement. Another usually long neglected occupation one can engage in is writing letters to people who have either written and are waiting for a response, or those who one should have written anyway. Just ask yourself, in today’s internet age, how many people write letters to friends and relatives. When was the last time you had written a letter to a friend or a relative? You are not able to recall, right? Isn’t letter writing a great hobby? It helps revive old links and at the same time one feels content of spending one’s leisure time in a profitable manner.

Another way to relax, according to her, ‘’is to go out of the house – do window shopping or merely walk in a park and watch children play. During evening hours, I often go out to the nearby mall with my friends, do a bit of window shopping and pick fruits or an ice cream. Anything that is different from the daily routine and that one enjoys doing is a good way of spending one’s leisure hours,” she explained.

Prof Adefule-Ositelu added that the importance of leisure can never be exaggerated, as it helps to break all barriers and come out of the shell in which one is confined, “By spending good time at leisure, one can have a healthy mind and spirit. In fact, our forefathers who were free from the work load and tensions of the modern life and had a leisurely way of life, were also free from the problems and diseases caused by the stressful living such as anxiety, high blood pressure, heart problems and so on. We humans, who cannot lead a leisurely way of life, can at least spare an hour of leisure a day. Let us pay attention to animals like goats, sheep, ox, cats, even plants, they all create time to rest, and really relax, and they have longevity of life free from debilitating diseases such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. Wont you rather recreate,” she asked rhetorically.

  • Benefits of electric bikes by Zero Motorcycles chief

The Chairman of Zero Motorcycles Nig Ltd, Mr Abayomi Ogunsola, has called for the usage of Zero Electric Patrol motorcycles by law enforcement agencies in the country.

According to him, the overall benefits of these motorcycles far outweigh any comparative fossil fuel models and would indeed help the various authorities enhance their provision of a safer society while reducing maintenance costs and being environmentally friendly.

He said: “There are clear advantages to going electric. No oil and air filter changes, no oil changes; no engine setting or knocking, among others. These and many other reasons are why we introduced this world class leading range of motorcycles particularly the security patrol ones.

“The motorcycles have the latest technology available; they are noiseless and can be additionally utilised inside buildings and enclosed areas as there are no exhaust fumes to worry about. They can also be utilised in petroleum tank farms as the possibility of exhaust sparking fire is non-existent. They can be outfitted with various security gadgets.”

According to him, plans are underway to start assembling the motorcycles in the country.

The motorcycles come in different models for on road and off road applications with the off road versions particularly useful in bush paths, hilly and rough terrains.

  • Unveiling the benefits of the giving covenant!

Welcome to another impactful week of great things. I hope you were blessed by last week teaching. Today, we shall focus on Unveiling the Gateways to Financial Dominion!

We discover from scriptures that covenant practice is the platform for empowerment into realms of financial fortune. That is, God empowers us for wealth on the basis of His covenant (Deuteronomy 8:18). It is important to note that God’s financial dominion plan anchors on the covenant of seed time and harvest, which connotes giving and receiving. Remember, a covenant is a deal enacted by God based on well-defined terms and sealed with an oath, committing God’s integrity to make good His promise (Job 22:21-26; 2 Corinthians 8:9). This covenant is as reliable as the covenant of day and night. That means, as the day and night keep changing positions and the sun and moon continue to rule the day and night, this covenant remains in force (Psalm 89:34; Jeremiah 33:20-21, 25-26; Philippians 4:15).

Let us also recognise that we either engage the covenant of abundance or we are not candidates for God’s financial fortune plan. This is because it is obedience to God’s commandments that puts us in command of His blessings. We must, therefore, take fast hold of instructions on any subject of interest to us because that is our guarantee for taking delivery of such provisions. God’s plans are authentic and His purposes are established in heaven forever. All we need is to position ourselves through obedience to take delivery of our portion (Genesis 12:1-3; Deuteronomy 5:32-33).

One great mystery behind financial fortune is having Kingdom advancement dreams. That is, for the financial giant in us to come alive, we must be big-time Kingdom dreamers. Without a Kingdom dream, we are not candidates for financial fortune. This is because God’s financial resources are primarily entrusted to promote His Kingdom. As it is written: But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you (Matthew 6:33). We must recognise that Kingdom wealth is an entrustment, not an achievement. That is, it is entrusted to people God can trust to fulfil His purpose with it (Luke 16:11; Exodus 35:4-5, 16, 22; Haggai 1:5-11). When we identify a cause in the Kingdom and invest in it with delight, we access God’s favour which makes us triumphant where others struggle. Therefore, the bigger our Kingdom dreams, the larger the coast of our financial fortune.

Interestingly, the returns on our givings are not only limited to financial blessings but other fringe benefits that money cannot buy. We understand from scriptures that when Israelites entered into a covenant to serve the Lord, which they proved through their sacrifices, He gave them rest roundabout (2 Chronicles 15:15).

What, then, are the Benefits of the Giving Covenant?

    • It Averts Curses: Curses are real and there are many victims of generational curses in the world today. We saw from scriptures that Noah reared an altar of sacrifice and God averted the curse upon humanity (Genesis 8:20-22). Also, as a result of David’s sin, God plagued the Israelites. However, when David offered a sacrifice to God, the Bible says: …So the Lord was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel (2 Samuel 24:24-25). If God averted the curse that He proclaimed through the altar of sacrifice, any other curse working against any destiny can be cheaply averted through the covenant of giving and receiving, which includes sacrifice (Malachi 3:6).
    • It Engenders Divine Health: Anytime we give to the needy, we are giving to the Lord and servicing His interest (Proverbs 19:17; Matthew 25:40-41; Psalm 41:1-3). Moreover, as we minister to the needy, God delights in adding more years to us on the earth. This is because true givers are not permitted to be tormented by sickness. We must understand that life is about ministering to the needs of others around us as ‘engraced’ by God. Money cannot buy health but giving secures and insures our health against satanic assaults.
    • It Engenders Divine Protection: As God remembers our offerings, He stands to defend us (Psalm 20:1-3). The giving covenant invokes God’s blessings on our lives, which makes us indestructible. For instance, every plan to destroy Joseph failed because the blessings of his father prevailed on his life. Likewise, when God pronounces us blessed, the assaults of the wicked cannot prevail on our lives. (Psalm 112:10; Genesis 49:26). When we engage in covenant practice, our protection is as sure as eternity. Moreover, every covenant practitioner has an impregnable wall of fire around him that the devil and his agents cannot break through (Job 1:9-10, 22:23-25).
    • It Engenders Fruitfulness: The covenant of giving and receiving terminates barrenness and grants us access to supernatural fruitfulness. Abraham and Sarah in their usual liberality entertained angels unaware. As a result, God terminated their shame and blessed them with Isaac, even in their old age. Also, the Shunammite woman and her husband ministered to Elisha and God blessed them with a son in return (Genesis 18:1-10; 2 Kings 4:8-17; Psalm 113:9).
    • It Engenders Favour: When Solomon reared an altar of sacrifice to God, He appeared to him (Solomon) in a dream and said: …Ask what I shall give thee (1 Kings 3:5). He asked for wisdom and God granted him more than he asked for. The giving covenant offers us an open cheque to secure God’s favour in our affairs (1 Kings 3:3-5, 13; Psalm 45:12).

  • Benefits of VAIDS

Three weeks to the second expiration of the Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS), Assistant Editor, Nduka Chiejina looks at the build up to the introduction of the scheme and the possible benefits that can be derived from the successful execution of the laudable tax amnesty programme.

The Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS), is part of measures instituted by Muhammadu Buhari administration to improve tax collection. It was brought in via executive order number 004 of 2017.

The rationale for instituting VAIDS is to provide an opportunity for taxpayers, or amnesty for chronic tax defaulters, to voluntarily declare their assets and income and pay taxes due on them and in return obtain some benefits.

As part of this government’s exclusive economic pathway to growth, President Muhammadu Buhari, last year, launched the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP). Anchored by Vice President Yomi Osinbajo with a totally buy-in by the economic team, Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, conceived the tax amnesty programme, Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS), “as first in the series of reforms that will transform the nation’s tax system and provide sustainable and predictable funding for all tiers of government.”

The scheme was designed to take effect from July 1, 2017 with nine months amnesty window initially scheduled to end in March, 2018, but the deadline was shifted to July 2018 to enable more tax defaulters take advantage of the scheme.

Giving more insight into the scheme, the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, said that VAIDS is designed for all federal and state taxes like Companies Income Tax, Personal Income Tax, Petroleum Profit Tax, Capital Gains Tax, Stamp Duties, Tertiary Education Tax, Technology Tax and Tenement Rate.

The VAIDS amnesty programme she said also covers all back taxes for the last six years in line with the statutory periods of limitation under the relevant tax statutes. She noted that some individuals were “charging non-allowable personal expenses to company accounts particularly with reference to overseas school fees; and inconsistency between income declared for tax purposes and the value of assets owned.”

According to Adeosun, “VAIDS specifically targets taxpayers who have not being fully declaring their taxable income/assets; have not been paying the tax due at all; have been underpaying or under remitting; are under a process of tax audits or investigations with the Relevant Tax Authorities; are engaged in tax disputes with the Relevant Tax Authorities but are prepared to settle the tax dispute out of court; new taxpayers who are yet to register with the tax authorities; and existing registered taxpayers who have new disclosures to make.”

Commenting further, Adeosun noted that “it does not matter whether the relevant tax default arose from undeclared assets within or outside the country. If tax should have been paid, the Voluntary Asset and Income Declaration Scheme is providing a once in a lifetime opportunity to declare the tax outstanding and resolve it definitively”.

She assured that anyone who takes advantage of the scheme to declare their assets and income for the purposes of taxation will be free to transfer their assets that they had previously held in nominee and other names into their own name.

According to her, “many Nigerians have lost assets in the course of trying to conceal such assets from the authorities. Such losses typically occur in the event of death or an urgent need to liquidate assets when required documentation and proof of ownership cannot be provided. The global focus on illicit financial flows is such that global regulations will only become tighter with time, thus this opportunity to regularise ownership of assets should be seized as proper declaration allows assets to be legally and formally held by the true owner.”

Other advantages for those who participate in the scheme she pointed out “include freedom from prosecution for past tax defaults, as provided in the law. Those taking advantage of the Scheme by declaring honestly and fully will be free from prosecution and will qualify for forgiveness of penalties and interest.”

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) had revealed that the total number of taxpayers in the country before VAIDS was introduced last year was around 13 million, with a preponderance of the tax payers, around 96% being those in paid employment, and whose taxes were deducted at source under the Pay As You Earn (PAYE).

However, months into the programme, the number of tax payers had swollen to over 19 million with local and foreign companies operating in the country now taking advantage of the VAIDS to regularise their tax status. A few days ago it was disclosed that the federal government had raked in N30 billion from the VAIDS initiative with the possibility of the amount increasing before the end of the programme.

The Deputy Director, Tax Policy and Advisory Department, FIRS, Gabriel Ogunjemilusi stated that “the tax amnesty programmes, from the lessons learnt from other countries, were very successful and Nigeria situation cannot be different. With the domestication of the automatic exchange of information effective April 1, 2018, adoption of Common Reporting Standards and the current updating of third parties data on taxable persons by government, there will be no more hiding place for tax evaders.”

“Prior to the introduction of the scheme last year, Nigeria’s tax-to-Gross Domestic Product ratio was one of the lowest in the world. As of May 2017, of the roughly 70 million Nigerians who were economically active only 14 million or 20 per cent paid any federal or state taxes. The number of Nigerians who paid more than N10m in self-assessed taxes is even more astonishing. As of December 2017, only 943 Nigerians paid self-assessed taxes of over N10m and of that number, 941 live in Lagos State, the other two live in Ogun State,” Ogunjemilusi.

    Happy States

It was common knowledge that the states and the federal government were always at loggerheads over who gets what, especially how much, when it comes to sharing money. With insufficient funds coming from the sale of crude oil into the federation account, poor tax collecting history and weak Internally Generated Revenues (IGRs), many state governments found themselves in deep financial trouble so much so that they couldn’t pay salaries except for very few of them.

In comes the Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) and all the states, having seen the benefit of the scheme, are cooperating with the federal government for the success of the scheme.

This is so because the tax components which the VAIDS amnesty targets are jointly operated by the federal and state governments and the scheme has opened a vista of opportunity for the states to pocket more resources hitherto unknown to them. Now many states have jumped onto the wagon of VAIDS and are willingly exchanging information and data with the federal government to help identify individuals and corporate entities prime for taxing.

The states have bought into VAIDS so much so that they gave the Federal Government all the necessary support. At an interview with journalists on VAIDS, Adeosun expressed happiness with the level of cooperation from the state governments. She said: “all the states are involved in way or another through the Joint Tax Board. Every state is now getting more people into their tax net. We have realized that taxes are sustainable source of revenue for government and government as you know cannot fully depend on oil. We cannot be going to FAAC always asking how much can we share this month.”

Now, the focus of sourcing revenue has shifted from sharing to generating and collaborating with the federal government to harvest more revenue. the focus now is on internal generation of revenue. According to Adeosun, “the VAIDS train visited a few states where governors received the programme with open arms; pledging cooperation for a successful execution.”

Kaduna state Governor Nasir El- Rufai in his exuberant manner promised during a stakeholders’ meeting on VAIDS in Kaduna state that his government would make available detailed data of assets, landed properties owned by wealthy Kaduna state individuals that escape taxes.

    Growth Imperatives.

Revenue mobilisation is potentially the master key to unlocking Nigeria’s growth potential by massively financing its huge infrastructure projects including roads, power, health and rail. Regular payment of taxes by Nigerians and corporate organisations is fundamental to the country’s growth and development. The country needs predictable revenue inflow, which is very essential for increasing investments by the federal and state government in infrastructure.

Total tax revenue as a percentage of GDP indicates the share of a country’s output that is collected by the government through taxes. Therefore, there is a strong relationship between GDP and tax revenue. GDP is an indicator of a nation’s economic health, and economic growth is a major driver of the level of tax revenues. When tax revenues are up, they point to an economy that is in a better health. In the event of a financial meltdown occasioned by a fall in revenue from the sale of export commodities, the government can rely on a good tax base to fund its activities like pay salaries and contractors for the provision of infrastructure and services.

With VAIDS on track, Adeosun stated that all states of the federation now get more taxpayers in their tax net thus increasing their IGR. According to her, “every state is now getting more people into their tax net. We realised that taxes are sustainable source of revenue for government and government as you know cannot fully depend on oil. “We cannot be going to FAAC (Federation Account Allocation Committee) always asking how much can we share this month,” she said.

According to her, the focus had shifted from sharing to internally generated evenue. Under the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), The government made a key development objective of raising tax revenue from 6% to 20% by 2020. Both the ERGP published in March 2017, which seeks to keep the fiscal deficit within the boundary established by the Fiscal Responsibility Act, and the draft 2018 Budget emphasise this revenue target.

Tax administration remains a veritable source of revenue to initially supportrevenue realized from commodity export. This will involve measures such as increasing non-oil tax revenue through a series of tax administration initiatives (improving tax compliance, broadening the tax net, employing appropriate technology) combined with tax policy reforms (strengthening tax legislation, introduction of tax on luxury items, and other indirect taxes to capture a greater share of the informal economy.

With the interest generated by the VAIDS Programme, it appears Nigeria is on the path to growing its tax base significantly to challenge revenue from oil.

  • Benefits of Hajj savings plan by NASFAT chief missioner

The Non-Interest Banking (NIB) Group of Sterling Bank has launched the Hajj Savings Plan in partnership with Nasrul-lahi-li Fathi Society of Nigeria (NASFAT) in Lagos. The novel savings plan is designed to make it easy for interested Muslims to choose the year they would prefer to perform the Hajj and plan their contributions, either weekly or monthly, towards achieving the objective. In this interview, Chief Missioner of NASFAT, Alhaji Mahroof Onike, hails Sterling Bank for the initiative and also highlights the benefits of performing the Hajj at least once in the lifetime of a Muslim.

    Purpose of Hajj

Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam where Allah commands that Muslims who can afford it should go on Hajj at least once in their lifetime.

Every year, millions of Muslim pilgrims from all over the world embark on a five-day Hajj pilgrimage. The main activity of the pilgrimage is for the pilgrims to circle Islam’s most sacred site, namely the cube-shaped Ka’aba in the Saudi Arabian city of Mecca, seven times.

Pilgrims also take part in a series of rituals intended to bring about greater humility and unity among Muslims. This activity is known as Hajj.

Embarking on Hajj is seen as an opportunity to clean off past sins and start afresh. Many Muslims seek to deepen their faith during the Hajj which is why you see women covering their hair with what is commonly known as the “hijab” upon returning from the holy pilgrimage. Muslims are required to perform Hajj because it is the most complete form of worship. It requires that Muslims bear the hardships of travel and sacrifice the comfort of their homes to please their Creator, the Almighty Allah.

    Hajj Savings Plan

Muslims who have not gone on Hajj should take advantage of Sterling Bank’s Hajj Savings Plan to set a future pilgrimage date for performance of the Hajj (major pilgrimage) or Umrah (minor pilgrimage).

This savings plan initiative by Sterling Bank is a welcome development which I believe will create opportunities for Muslims who intend to perform Hajj at a future date. It is a laudable plan and every Muslim who has knowledge of the initiative should commit to playing a part in creating awareness about it so that a lot of Muslims can benefit from it.

Why Muslims should perform the Hajj

Muslims who have not performed the Hajj may not appreciate the value of Islam as much as those who have gone on the pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime. I will, therefore, like to call on wealthy Muslims to support those who cannot afford the pilgrimage so that their blessings from God will continue to increase.

Performing Hajj involves a lot of physical challenges and many people walk the routes. Those who cannot afford Hajj are sometimes financed by charities or community leaders. Others save their entire lives to make the journey while some even walk thousands of miles by foot to Saudi Arabia, taking months to arrive.

    History of the Hajj

The rites of the Hajj are designed to trace the footsteps of Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ismail – or Abraham and Ishmael as they are known in the Bible. Muslim adherents believe Prophet Ibrahim’s faith was tested when God commanded him to sacrifice his only son Ismail. Prophet Ibrahim was prepared to submit to the command, but God stayed his hand, sparing his son and gave him a sheep instead.

Hajj is also an opportunity for pilgrims to trace the path of Prophet Ibrahim’s wife, Hagar, who scholars believe ran between two hills seven times searching for water to save her dying son before God brought forth a spring that runs to this day. That spring is the sacred well of Zamzam, which is believed to possess healing powers and pilgrims often return from the Hajj with bottles of its water as gifts.

There is no disease that this water cannot heal but you have to have faith in it because Allah says He will heal those who believe and will not heal those who do not believe in Him. So, faith is very important.

    Importance of Kaaba to Muslims

Islamic scholars are of the opinion that the Ka’aba was built by Ibrahim and Ismail as a house of monotheistic worship thousands of years ago but over the years, the Ka’aba was reconstructed and it has attracted different kinds of pilgrims, including early Christians who once lived in the Arabian Peninsula. In pre-Islamic times, the Ka’aba was used to house pagan idols worshipped by local tribes.

Muslims do not worship the Ka’aba, but it is Islam’s most sacred site because it represents the metaphorical House of God as well as the oneness of God in Islam. Praying Muslims around the world face the Ka’aba during their five daily prayers.

    Rituals performed during Hajj

Pilgrims perform several rituals during Hajj because it is a time when they enter into state of spiritual purity known as “ihram,” which is aimed at shedding symbols of materialism, giving up worldly pleasures and focusing on the inner self.

  • Benefits of revised Land Use Charge, by govt

•We will meet in court, says NCP

The Special Adviser to  Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on Taxation and Revenue, Mr Abdul Fatai Lasisi has said the revised Land Use Charge (LUC) law was ‘’grossly misunderstood’’, adding that it “has a lot of benefits and is relatively easy to understand.”

Speaking at a meeting of religious leaders and faith-based organisations in Alausa, Ikeja,  Lasisi said “the revised LUC is more harmonised, relatively cheaper and affordable.”

According to him, the charges “are done in a transparent and consultative manner, and quite predictable”.

The law, he said, favoured the physically-challenged, those who have been residing in the same location for up to 12 years, minors, retiree-owners of occupied properties, those in active service and the aged.

He said there would be no more penalties on arrears while late and instalment payments were now acceptable.

The law, Lasisi,  granted general and specific reliefs which could be as high as 45 per cent in some cases such as “pensioners of 60 years and above, owner-occupiers who are over 10 years in same properties, persons with disability, senior citizens above 70 years and non-profit making organisations”.

Lasisi said some properties, such as state-owned, public cemeteries and burial grounds, buildings used as public libraries and  places  occupied by obas and chiefs  were exempted from payment of the charge.

Only about 700,000 tenements in Lagos, he noted,  “have been captured in the tax net”, adding that this is low, considering the estimated number of houses in built-up areas across the state.

The National Conscience Party (NCP) founded by the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi yesterday said it would soon sue the Lagos State Government over the Land Use Charge (LUC) law.

Its National Secretary, Ayodele Akele,  at a Political Education and Membership Integration Programme in Lagos, said the party had found out that the LUC was illegal.

To Akele, the LUC was unaffordable and unacceptable even with the recent reduction following public outcry.

He said: “We have already discussed with our lawyers to take the government to court very soon over the LUC. We are taking the action because we have been able to establish, from the face value, that the charge is unconstitutional.

“Based on that, we are challenging this new charge in court, apart from the political steps we have been taking to challenge it. The fact is that the new charge, even with the review, is unaffordable to most residents; it is outrageous and will inflict hardship on residents.”

Akele said the charge was not well thought out and would lead to suffering.

He advised the government to look towards reducing the cost of governance as a way of generating revenue.

It was, he said,  improper to increase the charge when a new minimum wage had not been approved, alleging that the state had introduced several other forms of taxes.

Akele said residents were being overtaxed, adding that only cancellation, not review of the LUC would be acceptable.

  • Accessing the benefits of soul winning!

Welcome to another exciting week. I hope you were blessed by last week’s teaching. Also, I believe you have discovered how you can experience noiseless breakthroughs through obedience to the soul-winning commandment. Today, we shall focus on Accessing the Benefits of Soul Winning!

From scriptures, we discover that soul winning is the most profitable of all Kingdom stewardship endeavours because it covers all things we will ever need.

The value of a soul to Jesus is worth more than all the wealth of the world put together. As it is written: For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul (Matthew 16:26).

Soul winning covers all the things that money cannot buy (Luke 22:35). Also, commitment to soul winning enthrones the soul winner in his/her field of endeavours. The Bible says: That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelvetribes of Israel (Luke 22:30; see alsoProverbs 11:30).

Furthermore, soul winning makes kings of men. For it is written: By me kings reign, and princes decree justice. By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth (Proverbs 8:15-16). Soul winning makes kings of believers because soul winning makes wise (Proverbs 13:20). We saw how wisdom enthrones Joseph, Daniel and the likes in the Bible and wisdom is still enthroning men today. Every time we go out after souls, we are going with Jesus. The Bible records: And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen (Mark 16:20).

We also understand from scriptures that soul winning is a covenant gold mine. Concerning Peter, the Bible records: Then Peter said, Lo, we have left all, and followed thee. And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God’s sake, Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting (Luke 18:28-30; see also Daniel 12:3). This connotes that, every investment made towards Kingdom advancement in terms of time, energy and resources entitles us to a hundred-fold more in this present time and in the world to come life everlasting.

What then, are the Benefits of Soul Winning?

    • Empowers Believers for Dominion: For it is written: And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name (Luke 10:17). They were on a soul winning mission and they had dominion over demons. Jesus said to them: Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you (Luke 10:19).
    • Soul Winning Stimulates Joy Unspeakable: No genuine soul winner ever gets depressed. The Bible records: And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name (Luke 10:17). Because: I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance (Luke 15:7). Remember, what we sow is what we reap (Galatians 6:7). So, when we give joy to heaven, we will reap heavenly joy on the earth. Depression is a destroyer of destinies but when we are on the go for Jesus or praying to God to save the lost; we find ourselves smiling. We can’t be harvesting souls for Jesus and not be rejoicing.
    • Health: We cannot be on the go for God and be serving sickness at the same time. For it is written: And ye shall serve the Lord your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee. There shall nothing cast their young, nor be barren, in thy land: the number of thy days I will fulfil (Exodus 23:25-26). We cannot buy that with money. The Bible says: A wicked messenger falleth into mischief: but a faithful ambassador is health (Proverbs 13:17). This implies, God is committed to keep us fit if we are on the go for Him because: Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit (John 15:2).

However, to enjoy these benefits of soul winning, you must be born again. Are you born again? If you are not, this is an opportunity to do so. Simply say the following prayer: Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Today, I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!” For further reading, please get my books: The Force Of Freedom, The Turnaround Power Of The Word, Following The Path Of The Eagle, Born To Win, All You Need To Have All Your Needs Met and Fulfilling Your Days. • Benefits of Divine shaking

It is scripturally axiomatic that things have a tendency of following a natural course of action, unless and until there is a divine shaking, which acts as a catalyst for it to be otherwise. When there is a divine shaking, stagnancy is lost to mobility, speed comes to sluggishness, the weak suddenly becomes strong, the hopeless starts to sing the song of hope, roads that have been declared as closed open, natural orders are suspended, power changes hands, the ignored are celebrated, servants are positioned on horses, the forgotten are remembered and there is a lift up from the pathway to the highway of life.

The Almighty God took Prophet Ezekiel to a valley of dry bones and asked him if the impossible can ever be possible; that is, can clinically dead bones receive life again? To proof that there is no cul-de- sac in the things of this world with God (Jeremiah 32:27), He asked him to prophesy; and when he did, there was a shaking and dead limbs started to look for their skulls. What this means is that when there is a shaking, students will pursue the right courses and/or vocations they were created to pursue, graduates/employees will get the right employment, square peg workers shall be placed in square hole positions, employers will meet with the perfect employees, doors of humongous business opportunities shall open, brethren that are due for marriages shall be led to where they will meet their right partners, the physically incapacitated shall rise again and compulsory help shall not rest until they have located the needed commissions.

When a divine shaking is provoked, as God has promised this season, God will lay sinews upon dead bones, He will follow it up with flesh upon them to cover the bones and resurrect the dead to proof to the world that He is the Lord. The Almighty God is saying that when He shakes the world for your sake, He would partner with you in whatever you do and wherever you go. God will send help to you from above and cover your nakedness. And, concerning your home, business, projects and commission, you shall never ever be put to shame. Where and when some are lamenting cast downs, you shall be positioned in Goshen to testify of lifting up (Job 22:29; Genesis 47:27; Exodus 9:25,26). Wherever you have been hated and forsaken such that no man comes to you, He shall make you an eternal excellency and joy of many generations (Isaiah 60:15). God will give you a voice over envious peers and powers of wickedness. You shall become like a maize seed inside an opaque bottle before chickens; they can see but can’t have access to, eat or destroy (cf Col. 3:3). Any attempt to destroy, harm or hurt you shall boomerang as the diggers of evil pits shall be consumed in their pits (Isaiah 49:26; Proverbs 26:27; Isaiah 43:4 cf Daniel 6:24)

Don’t ever loose hope because it is never over until it is over. I have it on divine authority to announce to you that is not over with you yet. The Almighty God who lifted the siege over Israel with a shaking shall, during this season of lent, lift every siege placed on the lives of your loved ones and you. Your scarcity shall turn to flourishing. Powers that are saying that even God cannot help you shall see God at work in your lives (2 Kings 7). The custodian of your entitlements shall hear a deafening noise and instruct an instant release what belongs to you. All that once sang “Hossanah to the son of David” in your life but are chorusing “Crucify Him” today because things are untoward with you shall gather to tell the world “He is risen”, concerning you tomorrow, in the name of Jesus.

To be a partaker of the divine shaking of this season, you need to take your gaze off men, not taking to mind how powerful they are in the schemes of this world and come to Jesus Christ in penitence and faith (Jeremiah 17:5-8; John 6:37), ask Him to forgive all your sins, make a commitment to live a life worthy of true believers, engage yourself more with philanthropic works, love the lovables without forgetting the unlovables and it shall be well with you in the name of Jesus

Prayer: Lord, I come to you today, use what makes you the Almighty to intervene in my life and situation in the name of Jesus.

Health benefits, nutritional facts of cucumber

Few foods are as cool as a cucumber. These low-calorie veggies contain many nutritional benefits, including hydrating properties and valuable nutrients.

There are hundreds of varieties of cucumber, and they come in dozens of colors, but the edible types are classified as being for either slicing or pickling, according to Cornell University’s Growing Guide. Slicing cucumbers are cultivated to be eaten fresh, while pickling cucumbers are intended for the brine jar. Slicing cucumbers are usually larger and thicker-skinned than pickling ones.

In the United States, commonly planted varieties of slicing cucumber include Dasher, Conquistador, Slicemaster, Victory, Comet, Burpee Hybrid and Sprint, according to the World’s Healthiest Foods website. Commonly planted varieties of pickling cucumber include Royal, Calypso, Pioneer, Bounty, Regal, Duke and Blitz.

While most people think of cucumbers as vegetables, they are actually a fruit. They contain seeds and grow from the ovaries of flowering plants. Cucumbers are members of the plant family Cucurbitaceae, which also includes squashes and melons. The most common type of slicing cucumber found in a grocery store is the garden cucumber, Cucumis sativus, according to World’s Healthiest Foods.

    Nutritional profile

Cucumbers are good sources of phytonutrients (plant chemicals that have protective or disease preventive properties) such flavonoids, lignans and triterpenes, which have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer benefits, according to World’s Healthiest Foods.

“We should definitely seek out foods that are nutrient-rich, using the positive approach of what to put on your plate vs. what to keep off,” said Angela Lemond, a Plano, Texas-based registered dietitian nutritionist and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The peel and seeds are the most nutrient-dense parts of the cucumber. They contain fiber and beta-carotene. “Beta carotene is an antioxidant that helps with immunity, skin, eye and the prevention of cancer,” said Lemond. A study published in the Pakistan Journal of Nutrition found that cucumber seeds were a good source of minerals, and contained calcium.

“Cucumbers are naturally low in calories, carbohydrates, sodium, fat and cholesterol,” said Megan Ware, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Orlando, Florida. There are just 16 calories in a cup of cucumber with its peel (15 without). You will get about four percent of your daily potassium, three percent of your daily fiber and 4 percent of your daily vitamin C. They also “provide small amounts of vitamin K, vitamin C, magnesium, potassium, manganese and vitamin A,” Ware said.
