  • Stolen artefacts: Oba of Benin, Obaseki to build world-class Museum

Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the state government is working with the Benin Monarch, Oba Ewuare II, to build a world-class Royal Museum, to hold stolen artefacts being recovered by the Benin Kingdom.

Obaseki disclosed this when he hosted Prof. Nicholas Thomas of Cambridge University and Prof. Mrs. Annie Coombes of the University of London, both experts in Benin History, to a dinner, at the Government House in Benin City, Edo State.

The governor said the state government plans to work with the monarch to build the museum in the Oba’s Palace in Benin City, and counter the arguments of art collectors, who are still in possession of stolen artefacts from the Benin Kingdom and have maintained that the safety of the artifacts is not guaranteed if they are returned to the ancient Kingdom.

According to Obaseki, “The decision to establish a world-class museum at the Oba’s Palace, one of the safest places in the world, will encourage curators across Europe and in other parts of the world, to be confident and support the advocacy for the safe return of stolen artefacts of Benin Kingdom.”

He expressed appreciation to Prof. Nicholas Thomas and Prof. Annie Coombes, for their advocacy for the safe return of artefacts of the Benin Kingdom looted during the 1897 invasion.

He said, “We hope your experience in Benin City will encourage you to sustain the advocacy for the return of our stolen artefacts. When the artefacts are returned, they will assist generations yet unborn to understand who they are, as a people and how they have dominated this environment in the past.”

In his remarks, Prof. Nicholas Thomas, said his experience in Benin City was exciting as the visit gave him the opportunity to see first-hand, the place where the historic stolen artefacts are fashioned in Igun Street.

Prof Thomas said, “True knowledge about artworks is not in University museums but lies in the makers, creators, communities where these works are created.” He noted that the advocacy for the safe return of the stolen artefacts of the Benin Kingdom will be sustained until the artworks are safely returned.

  • Edo COSON to drag Efe Omorogbe before Benin Monarch

Members of the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) have threatened to drag the manager of Tuface Idibia, Mr. Efe Omorogbe, before the Benin Monarch, Oba Ewuare II, for engaging in conduct that negates the culture of Edo people and the creative community.

The COSON members said the decision to drag Omorogbe before the Benin Monarch was for him to be called to order and appropriate sanctions imposed on him.

Speaking at a press briefing in Benin City, Chief Arala Osula, the Osula of Benin, urged Omorogbe to stop parading himself as the Chairman of the Governing Board of COSON.

Chief Osula said they only recognised Tony Okoroji as Chairman of COSON and not Omorogbe.

Reading a letter addressed to Omorogbe by the Edo COSON, Chief Osula stated that their grouse against Omorogbe was because they felt the support and contributions of Okoroji.

The letter reads in parts: “It is unfortunate that given your position of visibility as the manager of Tuface Idibia, no one in the state as felt you impact in any way.

“While you purport to come from Edo State, we do not know you because you always go around with your nose in the air.

“We are shocked that despite our clear democratic choice of Okoroji as COSON chairman, you have mischievously and fraudulently continued to parade yourself as Chairman of COSON. Your behaviour is contrary to the norms and culture of the great people of Edo State.”

  • Obaseki hails payment of Libya returnees by Benin monarch

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has commended the Benin Monarch, Oba Ewuare II, for offering tô place some deportees from Libya on a monthly salary for a period of three months.

Governor Obaseki described the gesture as a landmark effort towards  rehabilitating the deportees.

Obaseki commendation which was contained in a statement he personally signed Governor stated that the Oba has shown commitment to seeing that the deportees are catered for and protected from the vagaries of idleness.

According to the statement, “I commend the Oba’s support for the returnees. This has shown that the Oba is not just committed to ensuring that our youths break loose from the grip of human trafficking, but that those who survived the hellish experience in Libya are catered for and do not have any reasons whatsoever to go back to their vomit.

“This gesture came at the right time and will further complement the state government’s efforts to rehabilitate the returnees and reintegrate them into society. We are delighted and appreciate the Oba’s support since the onset of the recent campaign to stem the tide of illegal migration and human trafficking.

“We, at this juncture, want to call on our illustrious sons and daughters to join in this campaign and help our brothers and sisters as they settle back into society. The Oba’s gesture is a clarion call to all. Much as the state government is committing resources to make this happen, we are certain that this cause could do with more hands. This will help build structures and institutions to stem the tide of the menace and restore our ethos and pride as a people,” Obaseki said.

  • Benin monarch pays Libya returnees

The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has placed each returnees from Libya, on three months salaries.

A statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Desmond Agbama, yesterday said Oba Ewuare, announced this when he hosted Libyan returnees.

Besides the allowances, he said the Oba Ewuare Foundation would provide the tools/facilities for those who went through skill acquisition programmes.

He decried the quest to make quick money without legitimate means, noting that youths must embrace agriculture and other legal businesses to excel.

The statement said the monarch frowned at parents encouraging illegal migration via sea and desert, stressing that the palace will discourage the trend.

Oba Ewuare, who praised the steps taken to curb human trafficking and crime in the state, called for everyone’s collaboration to win the fight against inhuman acts.

Leader of the returnees Vincent David told the monarch that they were at the palace to seek assistance to enable them start up after acquiring skills from the government.

The returnees hailed Oba Ewuare for deploying traditional means to rescue trafficked victims from their slave masters.

  • Human trafficking…Benin monarch, ancient deities to the rescue

Last Friday, the ancient city of Benin was rapped around by red apparels-wearing  chiefs, priests, witch doctors and sorcerers on the auspices of the Benin monarch, Omo Nova N’ Edo Ukuakpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare 11, to purge the city and its environs of the infamy known as the city of “blood and prostitution”. The purpose of the rituals was to activate deities, grooves, shrines, idols and other deified antiquities to blend ancient and modern in the monarch’s bid to rid Benin Kingdom off the disheartening social strifes that have enveloped the state, desecrated the land and debased our humanity, as a people.

Sometimes in July 2011, Oba Erediauwa, who has joined his ancestors, activated a similar ritual on some unknown group of cultists who had beheaded Endurance Obanor, a 100-level student of the College of Education, Ekiadolor, stuffed his mouth with grass and posted his severed head on a metal school gate! A month later, Edo State Police Command arrested two of the suspects – Osagie Omorodion (23) and David Odigie (24). Both Omorodion and Odigie were said to have participated in the killing of Endurance, a member of a rival cult group. Omorodion (aka Musa), told journalists that fighting broke out among the two rival gangs, the Neo-Black Movement (aka Black Axe) and the Eiye confraternity, resulting in casualties on both sides.

In a similar incident in May 21, 2015, the Edo State Police  Command through its then spokesman, Mr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, paraded 41 suspected cultists, including 30 Auchi Polytechnic students who were arrested for allegedly killing members of the public and destroying property. Eleven of the suspects were alleged cult leaders. The rest were students and artisans who played various roles in the crimes plaguing Edo State.

Mr. Ojukwu had further stated that the suspects were nabbed by an Anti-Cultism team set up by the then Inspector General of the Police, Solomon Arase. In his words, “the suspects who are leaders of cult confraternities are being interrogated for their conspiratorial involvement in the murder of ten Nigerians. The Black Axe Confraternity, Nosman Confraternity, and Judas Confraternity were among the names of the cults involved in the killings”.

These are very few reported cases of mass killings resulting from cult-related violence or Community Development Associations (CDA) motivated bloodbath in the state that prides itself famously as the ‘Heart Beat’ of the  Nation. In 2013, yours sincerely became a victim of the CDA-motivated blood-soaked enterprise that happened between Amagbon and Evbukhu communities land profiteering. Several lives were lost and property worth millions of naira destroyed, including a building consisting of six number flats of three bedrooms.

The seeming impunity with which violence erupts and hopelessness of the security agencies to contain the perpetrators have again lent credence to the activation of deified antiquities which appear to have been accepted for their efficiency and effectiveness in arresting the orgies of violence from non-state actors. Through Chiefs, the Odioweres, (clan leaders ),  Priests, sorcerers and sorceresses, witch doctors— the Benin monarch placed  curses on all the pastors, churches, individuals, groups, families and parents, who sponsor, promote, indulge, contract or participate or encourage perpetrators in any of the vices that have defiled the present security architecture. Also cursed were the native doctors who also subject the victims of the heinous crimes to oath of secrecies, cultists, violators of the order banning the activities of the Community Development Associations and others whose businesses are to initiate the sons and daughters of the ancient Kingdom into various cult groups.

The Benin monarch further warned those aiding and abetting human trafficking through the use of black magic and subjecting the victims to the oaths of secrecies to desist or face the wrath of the gods and the ancestors of the land.

In his own words: “You native doctors whose business is to subject people to the oath of secrecies and encouraging this evil act on the land, you have to repent, stop doing it.

”We want to use this medium to tell those who are under any oaths of secrecies that they are now free. We revoke the oath today.”

Now, Oba Ewuare’s alliance with chief priests and some palace chiefs, placing deadly curses on sponsors and perpetrators of all forms of social vices that hinder development in the state and those putting the image of the Kingdom in disrepute have been received with mixed feelings. Apart from priests, priestesses, traditional religious worshippers, Benin chiefs, dukes, village heads, market women, shrine worshippers who were in attendance, Directors and officials of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) as well as the diplomatic corps and security agencies were in attendance.

Is anyone surprised that of the nearly 5,000 Libyan returnees or repatriated Nigerian migrants — those who died in the desert or submerged in the Mediterranean Sea unaccounted for are 85% Edo State origin? What does that say about the people and the successive political leadership of the state? What is the present government doing to bring the scourge to an abrupt or instalmental end?

Strictly speaking, who can then fault the monarch’s patronage of the traditional means of social control to boost the nation’s security architecture which appears to have failed? Why will the State House of Assembly abandon the legislation against human trafficking and elect instead, to legislate itself into bondage by rejecting autonomy for itself, local government and the judiciary?

Shouldn’t the monarch be praised for adopting traditional means or ‘ancient science’ to solve our modern day crises resulting from some of the rebellious African children visited upon the continent that is now threatening to erase her humanity? Africa is the only continent on the planet earth that has failed to develop her medieval science methodology to the point of acceptability in solving social problems imposed on her by modernisation.

The crises of human trafficking, cultism and other acts of violence associated with the CDA have all conspired to threaten to erase Edo State, using global indices of civilisation. For instance, the total collapse of the family, educational, political, economic and religious institutions put in place to secure and safeguard our primordial civilisation is a culprit. It’s now common place in Benin City to see some pre and/or post-secondary school students soliciting for a pay for sex to fend for their family upkeep! It is even more debasing when families now boastfully pound their chests to announce the number of their children whom they have sponsored abroad usually by land through  the Sahara desert enroute Europe with most of these not having basic skills nor education. Most of these parents would have sold off their thriving businesses and sometimes their houses.

More damming — on the other hand — is the fact that nobody aspires to become successful in Edo State politically. This is because no one can except she/he must one way or the other belong to a member of the deadly cult groups. Yet, in the midst of these, one is rattled by government’s casual and shallow approach to bringing these known charlatans and the vices to book. We want to see Edo State Government on the auspices of Mr. Godwin Obaseki convoke inter-institutional conference to address the menace of unwarranted bloodletting and human trafficking. His government can come up with educational policy such as the one being implemented in Kaduna State where parents who refuse to send their kids to schools to be educated are liable to be imprisoned for upward of 10 years.

Edo State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has warned Pastor’s to desist from offering prayers for human traffickers and their victims.

The Benin Monarch, Oba Ewuare II had last week said it was regrettable that some church leaders in the state encouraged human trafficking and illegal migration in the country.

Oba Ewuare II also called on church leaders to help discourage illegal migration and trafficking of the youths as reports showed that some church leaders were encouraging it.

Addressing journalists Monday, Chairman of CAN, Bishop Oyenude Kure, said the Bible preached against human trafficking and as such pastors that prays for traffickers to succeed are fake.

Bishop Kure who condemned the action of pastors supporting human trafficking urged them to repent of their sins or face will face the wrath of God.

He stated that the action of such pastors was worrisome and declared that any Pastor involved in the act either through prayers or directly as an enemy of the church.

Kure disclosed of plans by CAN to on the 18th of May pray for Edo State and the country especially for the release of Dapchi school girls.

The Christian body also condemned killings by Fulani herdsmen and urged government to establish cattle ranches rather than cattle colonies.

Bishop Kure said CAN will resist any attempt to establish cattle colonies in Edo state.

On the coming 2019 general elections, Bishop Kure admonished Christians in the state ‘to get their PVCs. If you have not done that we are asking you to do that. We are also saying that all Christians should go and join political parties of their own choice so that we will be involved in the political destiny of our state and nation. So that we can move our nation forward.”

…says 2-year jail term awaits fake kings, chiefs

The Benin Monarch, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, has thrown his weight and that of the Edo State Traditional Council behind the fight against illegal migration and human trafficking, which have claimed the lives of thousands of Edo youths.

Oba Ewuare II, who spoke on Wednesday during the inauguration of the Edo State Council of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs by the Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, condemned the act and expressed disappointment in the Nigerian Embassy in Libya and the Libyan government for their inability to tackle the crisis.

He said it was particularly frustrating that it had to take a news report by the Cable News Network (CNN) for the government and other stakeholders to respond to the crisis.

The Benin Monarch said the crisis could have been better managed if the relevant authorities lived up to their roles, instead of allowing it to fester. He commended the governor for his efforts at resettling and reintegrating the Libyan returnees through various skills acquisition programmes.

Inaugurating the traditional council, Governor Obaseki expressed his gratitude to the Benin Monarch and the other traditional rulers for their support to his administration since his inauguration in November, last year.

He assured that his administration would continue to partner with the traditional council in the areas of law, order and security, stemming the tide of illegal migration, environmental sanitation, registration of Edo citizens and in the mobilisation of indigenes and residents of Edo State to participate in government policies and programmes, settlement of land disputes, agriculture, amongst others.

Obaseki further said that the support of the traditional council would be needed in health programmes and urged them to sensitise people in their areas of jurisdiction to be alive to their civic duties such as the payment of taxes and voter registration exercise.

He added that the various institutional reforms being implemented in the state have started yielding results as internally generated revenues by local councils have increased by 500 percent, from N30 million in November 2016, to N150 million in November this year.

Benin monarch’s blessing working for Lagos- Akiolu

Akiolu stressed Lagos State is enjoying the prayers and blessings of past Benin Obas.

Akiolu stated that he was happy to be present at the anniversary of an Oba “who used to be his brother but is now his father.”

Oba Ewuare emphasised that as father to all, he would continue the fatherly roles to all traditional rulers in Edo as well as outside the state
