Nigeria committed to two-state solution in Palestine – Kalu

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to resolving the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Speaking at the recent 149th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Geneva, Kalu emphasised that Nigeria is dedicated to achieving a peaceful resolution based on justice, self-determination, and mutual respect between both nations.

He highlighted the unique role that parliamentary diplomacy can play in this process.

Kalu pointed out that Nigeria has consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution to the Israel-Palestine conflict and aligns its position with internationally recognized frameworks for peace.

He reiterated Nigeria’s support for the two-state solution, which envisions the establishment of a sovereign and independent State of Palestine coexisting peacefully with the State of Israel.

The Deputy Speaker stressed that sustainable peace cannot be achieved through violence but rather through committed dialogue, mutual respect, and the preservation of human dignity for all individuals.

He urged the international community, particularly United Nations Member States, to renew their commitment to ending the occupation of Palestinian territories and to support the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Kalu assured that Nigeria, through its parliament, will continue to advocate for good governance, human rights, and the development of democratic institutions that benefit both Palestinians and Israelis.

According to him, lasting peace can only be realized if the rights and aspirations of both Israelis and Palestinians are safeguarded.

The Deputy Speaker acknowledged that while the road to peace will undoubtedly be challenging, a resolution to this longstanding conflict is achievable with political will and the collective efforts of the international community.

He expressed Nigeria’s solidarity with all those seeking peace and justice in the Middle East and reaffirmed the nation’s readiness to contribute to a lasting resolution.

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu has informed certain bills are underway to help address the challenges in accessing eye care services and improve the health system in the country.

Kalu disclosed this as part of activities marking the 2024 World Sight Day. The global event, is observed annually on the second Thursday of October to draw attention to blindness and vision impairment.

In a statement by his Special Assistant, Press Affairs, Udora Orizu, the Deputy Speaker said this year’s theme, “Children, Love Your Eyes”, resonates with the agenda of the 10th House of Representatives under Speaker Tajudeen Abbas PhD, tagged “Healthcare for All” to address the multifaceted issues plaguing our healthcare system.

Kalu expressed worry over reports that about 24 million people are living with vision loss and 1.3 million blind.

He said that apart from the initiatives of the Federal government, the parliament is committed to using legislative instruments to support the provision of lasting solution to the challenges, hence his sponsorship of the amendment bill of Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Council Act (Repeal and Enactment) Bill and National Eye Centre Act (Amendment) Bill alongside other lawmakers.

The Deputy Speaker explained the two bills which have passed first reading will allow more efficiency and expand access to eyecare delivery in Nigeria.

He however said that legislative efforts alone cannot solve this crisis, calling for collaborative effort and commitment by various stakeholders.

“Anyone who knows me knows that I am an advocate of eye health. For years i have been championing eye wellness for all through my outreach programmes and as well using legislative instruments.

“This year’s ‘World Sight Day’ theme, “Children, Love Your Eyes”, resonates with the agenda of the 10th House of Representatives, under the leadership of Speaker Tajudeen Abbas PhD, tagged “Healthcare for All” to address the multifaceted issues plaguing our healthcare system.

“Aside the laudable initiatives of the Federal government, the parliament on its part is committed to using legislative instruments to support in providing lasting solution to the challenges, hence why I, alongside other lawmakers sponsored the amendment bill of Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Council Act (Repeal and Enactment) Bill and National Eye Centre Act (Amendment) Bill.

“The Bills when passed into law will allow more efficiency and expand access to eyecare in Nigeria.

“I call on stakeholders as well to pool resources together in order to win the war against rising challenges of global blindness. Through the Benjamin Kalu Foundation I kicked off the End Blindness Project, an outreach targeting thousands of Bende indigenes for eye examinations, treatment, surgery and glasses prescription.

“The project is not just for Bende Federal Constituency but for the entire nation as well, the outreach will be extended to other parts of the country.”

FG must integrate AU’s 2063 agenda into national development plan, says Kalu

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu has said that the Nigerian government must intentionally integrate the African Union Agenda 2063 into the nation’s development strategic plan.

Kalu, who read a communique at the end of the Pan Africa Parliamentary conference of the African Union in South Africa, said by integrating the 2063 Agenda into its develop agenda, Nigeria will set a model for other African countries to emulate.

The AU Agenda 2063 is an ambitious framework aimed at transforming Africa into a global powerhouse of the future. It envisions an integrated, prosperous, and peaceful continent, driven by its citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena.

The agenda comprises seven aspirations, each focused on key areas such as economic growth, social inclusion, sustainable development, and good governance.

Kalu said Nigeria’s development aspiration has a nexus with the continent’s growth initiatives, adding that the President Bola Tinubu-led government is already implementing the goals contained in the AU Agenda 2063 across the broad themes of economic diversification, youth empowerment, economic diversification and good governance.

He said: “As Africa’s most populous nation and largest economy, Nigeria holds a unique position on the continent. Although it has in the past faced multifaceted challenges, including economic volatility, infrastructural deficits, and social inequalities, the Nigeria’s future is bright given the focus of the current administration of President Tinubu.”

The Deputy Speaker highlighted Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to diversify its economy away from oil dependency through investments in agriculture, technology, and renewable energy, adding that “by embarking on economic diversification, Nigeria aims to foster sustainable economic growth that reflects the aspirations of Agenda 2063.”

He stressed the importance of infrastructure as a cornerstone for economic development and touted the efforts of Nigeria in actively pursuing regional connectivity projects, such as the African Continental Free Trade Area, which aligns with Agenda 2063’s goal of an integrated Africa.

Kalu highlighted the initiatives by the federal government aimed at empowering Nigeria’s youth through education and job creation, saying this aligns with the Agenda’s focus on a people-driven development strategy that engages the continent’s largest demographic group.

He called for a comprehensive review of existing policies by African States to support the continent’s development agenda.

Deputy Speaker advocated for “An increased investment in critical infrastructure, including transportation, energy, and digital connectivity. Such investments will not only enhance Africa’s competitiveness but also facilitate intra-African trade and economic integration.”

Kalu spoke of the  importance of regional integration as outlined in Agenda 2063 and urged his colleagues to establish frameworks that strengthen partnerships amongst African nations, fostering trade and economic collaboration that can enhance regional stability and growth.

He said: “To remain competitive in a rapidly changing global landscape, Africa must prioritize technological advancement and innovation.”

He also called the attention to policies that support research and development.

He said: “Nigeria’s efforts at integrating the AU Agenda 2063 economic blueprint into Nigeria’s developmental strategies will not only enhance its own growth trajectory but also contribute meaningfully to the realization of a prosperous and united Africa”.

He said by integrating the African Union Agenda 2063 into its national framework, Nigeria also reinforces its role as a leader on the continent.

“The way forward requires a commitment from all stakeholders including the government, civil society, and the private sector working collaboratively towards achieving Agenda 2063 ambitious goals.

“As Nigeria embarks on this journey, it stands poised to become a beacon of hope and progress within the African continent, leading by example in the pursuit of sustainable development and shared prosperity.

“As Africa navigates the complexities of the 21st century, Nigeria’s proactive stance in aligning with the Agenda 2063 blueprint will be essential in shaping a prosperous and united Africa. Through collaborative efforts and a shared vision, the continent can achieve the transformative change envisioned for 2063 and beyond”.

Kalu to Shettima at 58: You are advocate of peace, development

Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has described Vice President Kashim Shettima as an advocate of peace and development.

In a statement signed by his chief press secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, on his 58th birthday, Kalu also described Shettima as a patriot who loves Nigeria and has made invaluable contributions to its development.

He recalled that in the most challenging years of insurgency in the North East, the vice president as a former governor of Borno State stood firm in his resolve to combat insecurity and terrorism.

The deputy speaker said further that as a Senator who represented Borno Central from 2019 to 2023, Shettima made several legislative interventions that helped to improve the lives of his immediate constituents and Nigerians in general.

Kalu said the vice president is delivering on the mandate of his present office, describing himself as an advocate of peace.

Kalu recalled with deep appreciation the noble role Senator Shettima played during the unveiling of the Peace In South East Project (PISE-P), emphasising that his presence at the landmark event held in Bende, Abia State on December 29, 2023, as the representative of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was a huge honour.

While praying to God for the blessing of many more years in good health, Kalu joined numerous friends of the vice president and indeed, the rest of the country in wishing Vice President Shettima a splendid birthday celebration.

  • Benjamin Kalu: Another star from South east

Benjamin Kalu: Another star from South east

    By Levinus Nwabughiogu

Love or hate him, he’s of a stellar cast from the South East. And therefore, a huge asset to the political powerhouse and in the configuration of the current leadership of the region. At every turn, generations have always received the Divine benevolence of a virile political persona in such a magnanimous stance. And now is no exception.

Time was when Dr. Nnamdi Benjamin Azikwe, the Zik of Africa whose name still resonates was the toast of the world. Ditto Dr. Micheal Iheonukara Okpara, the premier of the defunt south eastern region. In their quest for the development of their region in particular and Nigeria in general, both men birthed programmes and policies that were very impactful and still dot the landscapes of today. Such legacies are also felt far beyond the shores of their immediate environment. And unarguably, history has been kind to them as these imprints are still being celebrated decades after their demise.

Azikwe and Okpara may have passed on but they still breath in the emerging leaders of today’s generation. Their work still ongoing. One of such leaders is Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, the indefatigable and cerebral Deputy Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives. Apparently jolted by the lofty ideals and the success of these heroes past, Kalu is steadily and consciously creating and facilitating pacts and endeavours, pursuing programmes and policies that are geared towards facelifting the South East region.

For 54 years, the region wired in the excruciating pain of marginalization and vanquishedness, stagnated in the doldrums of underdevelopment, dilapidation and backwardness, without any significant federal presence. Of course, the collapse of infrastructure and other social amenities is commonplace and pronouced in the south east and attempts to liberate it have only been near-failed. When it appeared that hope was in the offing through the establishment of the South East Development Commission (SEDC), it vanished. The bill to birth the commission in the 8th and 9th National Assemblies was shutdown in the House of Representatives.

But to typify his altruistic leadership, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu who only got elected into the 9th Assembly and could who have afforded to give an insouciant shrug on the bill or pursue other self aggrandizing projects quickly exercised his wits and discretion on the bill. The failure of the bill to fly in the 8th and 9th Assemblies could have, perhaps, amounted to a culdesac. But no. Upon his emergence as the Deputy Speaker in the 10th Assembly, Kalu prioritized this all-important bill. He dusted and expanded it appropriately to make it more acceptable, and then, lobbied and pushed for it passage. And in quick succession, the House passed the bill into law.

Anyone with a keen understanding of the legislative proceedings in any parliament globally, would know that passing a bill in an accelerated manner has always been a function of intense lobbying, love and confidence reposed in the sponsor. No bill ever passes by coercion or undue influence or on self will. It is always a product of the degree of concerns displayed by the lawmakers on the bill in question. And this is the case in the 10th House as the members clearly showed they understood the plights of the region. Besides, the members of the House also saw in Kalu a man of deep knowledge, pious and piety, one with utmost sense of patriotism and altruism to better the lots of region, and by a unanimous vote, the House eventually passed the bill into law.

Yet, the journey didn’t end in the Green Chambers. The Senate was another destination. Of course, the lobbying continued there. And thankfully, the Senators also reasoned with the House, supported and passed the bill into law.

Not one or two bills had been rejected at the juncture of their transmission to the presidency for assent. In fact, many had died a painful death. But in the case of the SEDC bill, grace, favour and reason came to play and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu gave his assent which has made the bill a law today.

Those completely oblivious of the goings-on would not understand the underpinnings. They would not know the sacrifices the Deputy Speaker made while following through. That the south east region now has a commission that will draw funds from the federation account for its development 54 years after the civil war is definitely no mean feat, no matter what anyone may say. Of course, the policy of the 3Rs: Reconciliation, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation of Gen. Gowon’s regime that was never implemented readily comes to mind. And the policy has obviously been made manifest in the SEDC championed by Kalu. Just pause a minute and think. What if he hadn’t pushed or found favour in the best places? Would there have been a Commission to celebrate today? Nope. Perhaps, only a few persons would appreciate this leader’s efforts.

Prior to now, Kalu had also unveiled the Peace In South East Project (PISE-P), a social interventionist mechanism that preaches peace in the south east region through a non kinetic means. At its unveiling on December 29, 2023 in Bende, Abia State, the world saw how Nigeria emptied itself in the agrarian

city. Of course, the galaxy of people that graced the occasion could strike envy or hate for Kalu. But he remains unfazed. He made it happen.

Many may have also forgotten that Kalu was the official spokesperson of the House of Representatives for four years in the 9th Assembly, a job he passionately did that presumably and unlimitedly introduced him to the larger community of Nigeria and the world.

Similarly, the deputy speaker had also pursued other lofty goals in his legislative journeys, using the instrumentality of the law, all in the interest of the south east and Nigeria.

To accentuate this reality, Kalu’s commitment to the unity of Nigeria, even in the face of immense adversity, is a testament to his patriotism. His willingness to sacrifice his own comfort and safety for the sake of the people of south east is a lesson in selfless service that we must all strive to emulate.

Leadership, I would say is not a mere title; it is not simply about power or authority. It is about courage, responsibility, and service. It is the art of navigating the ship of state through the uncharted waters of the future, inspired by a vision of progress, equality, and social justice. In this era of transformative change, leadership demands a profound understanding of our complex world, empathy for the challenges faced by our fellow citizens, and unwavering dedication to the betterment of our society.

To this end, the advisory board and organizing committee for the 2024 edition of the Michael Okpara Leadership Lecture and Award on Thursday, August 22, 2024 recognized Kalu’s numerous efforts and presented him with Dr. Michael Okpara Leadership Award which is the 2024 Premier’s Prize.

The award which comes with a bold inscription: “This Plaque of Honor is Presented to Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives In commendation for Quality Representation and Leadership in the Nigerian Parliament” further testifies to Kalu’s leadership finnese and acumen.

Interestingly, the award is coming admid an eruption of a mass hysteria over Kalu’s clarion call to duty. For me, I have been struggling to decipher the wrongs in his recent call to Governor Alex Otti of Abia State to rejoin the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Anyone familiar with the Deputy Speaker’s mien would not only attest to his oratory prowess and intelligentual sagacity but would also give testimony to his graceful thoughts. And so, beckoning Governor Alex Otti of his home state of Abia as seen in a viral video recently to return to APC was only a talk between two convial friends and brothers.

Except for mischief purposes, I am still at a loss as to how a brotherly call could elicit a plethora of inquiries as well as a cacophony of reactions and emotions, the twists and turns, most of which were deliberately couched and slanted to pour invectives, venoms and vituperations on the person and office of the deputy speaker.

Succinctly put, the public hysteria and the verbal attacks on the Deputy Speaker were highly unnecessary. There is nothing amiss with a national leader in the person of Kalu wooing people into his political party. This is the norm the world over. You and I can equally do same.

It is public knowledge that Kalu and Otti were together in APC before the governor left for the Labour Party (LP) on the eve of the primary elections after purchasing the nomination forms for Governorship. Perhaps, many have forgotten this. Besides, both men share a unique relationship that has spanned for several years. Kalu is still proud of the excellence Otti has brought into the governance of Abia State. He still gives his support and their relationship is very much intact. So, the salvo of accusations provoked in public and high places to cause disaffection among the two brothers can only be quietened by the calm demeanor and the superior reasoning and understanding the two leaders have shown since the tantrums from the noisy bunch began.

Suffice it to say, the Deputy Speaker’s call on Otti to return to the APC family was to effectively synergize, so that the combined effects can be far reaching. It is just for the rapid development of the state and nothing more. If Kalu can achieve so much, striving alone, imagine what a pair will achieve being together in the same party. The more, the merrier.

I am compelled to say that finding any other interpretations other than this speaks to the clandestine activities of those uncomfortable with the growing political profile of the Deputy Speaker. God still speaks grace upon His people.

And this is the reason I won’t waste a split second rebutting the gibberish peddled by some hawks like one Adebiyi Omotosho Dan. Mercenaries who ply their ‘trade’ with pseudo names with the sole aim of dragging Kalu’s name to the mud are not worth anybody’s time. Decency has never been associated with pigs, not now, not tomorrow, not ever. So, it is not in my totems to dignify them with a response now. That would mean glorifying infantilism.

Demonizing and cannibalizing a man who has within this short time of occupying a position, sacrificed a lot for Ndi Igbo is very unfortunate, to say the least. Like they say in local parlance, blowing off someone else’s candle will not light yours or make it shine brighter.

There could be a million calls to crucify Kalu but those who know him and have followed his political trajectories would lend credence to the fact that Grace speaks for him all the way.

And now that the APC chapter of Abia State has thrown its support behind Kalu’s call on Gov. Otti to return to the party, it suffices to say that all the middlesome interlopers who for selfish reasons animated the social media ecosystems can now engage in some decent trades and activities. Kalu means well for Abia State, Ndigbo gburugbu and Nigeria.

Kalu receives 600 LP, PDP, APGA members into APC

House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu has received another set of 600 defectors from four political parties into All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State.

    The defectors dumped the ruling Labour Party (LP) in the state, as well as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Young Progressives Party (YPP) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to embrace the APC.;

They were received into the APC during Kalu’s tour of electoral wards in his Bende Federal Constituency of Abia State.

Kalu is currently on a “thank you” and mobilisation tour of the 13 electoral wards in his constituency to show gratitude to the people and ask about their immediate needs.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, said the Deputy Speaker had visited five wards covering Item Wards A, B, and C; Ugwueke/Ezeukwu and Itumbauzo Wards and received several defectors into the APC.

Amongst the defectors are former PDP councillors from Alayi Ward A, Enoch Elekwa and Chukwu Udensi; former LP ward chairman, Jonah Chukwu; YPP ward vice chairman, Ekeoma Sylvester Eze; and former APGA local government chairman, Ndubuisi Sunday Agu.

Also, over 100 defectors publicly dumped the PDP and other political parties and joined APC when Kalu visited Umuhu Ezechi Ward on Tuesday.

During the tour, a former commissioner and Bende Local Government Area’s erstwhile chairman, who handed over to Kalu as council chairman 22 years ago, Paul Chikezie Mba, said the performance of the Deputy Speaker at the National Assembly attracted him and other defectors to APC.

Mba expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the South East Development Commission (SEDC) Bill into law and hailed Kalu for attracting many projects to the ward.

Receiving the defectors, Kalu said he was at Umuhu Ezechi to show gratitude to the people for voting him in last year’s general election.

He urged the people to continue to support President Tinubu who graciously signed the SEDC Bill.

During his visit to Ozuitem Ward, the Deputy Speaker received over 100 defectors from LP, PDP, APGA, and YPP to APC.

They included Chief John Ihueze and Sunday Kalu Iroham, who were hitherto chieftains of PDP; Adighije Okoronkwo, from APGA, and a host of others from YPP.

Smear campaigners behind $10m bribery allegation, says dep. speaker

    • ‘I have no rift with Speaker’

House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu has said a purported shouting match between him and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas over an alleged $10 million bribe is ludicruous.

The Deputy Speaker described the allegation as a joke taken far by those he called fifth columnists and mischief makers working to smear his name and put him at a crossroads with the Speaker.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, the Deputy Speaker said he was firmly in support of the dissolution of the joint committee on Petroleum Resources (Midstream) and (Downstream) investigating activities of the petroleum sector.

He said the decision was taken recently by the leadership of the Green Chamber.

“…The allegation of $10 million bribe is an elaborate hoax, a joke taken too far. It is ludicrous, grossly spurious and provocative. It should be completely disregarded. There is no report of any indictment and nothing close to it was mentioned with regard to the committee, their leadership or membership.

“Needless to say that overtime, some fifth columnists and mischief makers have been working fruitlessly to smear Kalu and put him at a crossroads with the Speaker.

“They are hereby seriously warned to desist from spewing reports and publications capable of provoking legal suits as we might be forced to take that route to maintain the hard earned integrity and reputation of the deputy speaker.

“Abbas and Kalu are committed to working for the good of the legislature and the entire Nigeria by providing the needed leadership and guidelines meant to enable people-oriented legislations for good governance and the overall development of the country.

“Their dedication to duty was exemplified and typified even by the eloquent testimonies of their colleagues during the celebration of their first anniversary in office in June.

“The Office of the deputy speaker is always open to provide answers to official issues that need clarification,” the statement said.

It stressed that Kalu did not also have any misunderstanding with the Speaker and the leadership of the House on the development.

The statement added: “This clarification becomes imperative following the reports of alleged bickering between the Speaker and Kalu over the matter.

“We make bold to emphatically state that there is no conflict and has never been any between Speaker Abbas and the Deputy Speaker since their election as the presiding officers of the 10th House in June, 2023.

“Both leaders enjoy a robust working relationship akin to filial ties and at no time has Kalu’s loyalty to the speaker been questioned.

“Abbas has explicit confidence in his deputy whom he publicly refers to as his brother, friend, confidant and strong support.

“Let it also be stated that the report of a shouting match between Speaker Abbas and Kalu during the recent emergency leadership meeting which the deputy speaker participated via zoom from a very noisy ward-to-ward, thank-you tour at Ugwueke in Bende Federal Constituency of Abia State is greatly unfounded, insensitive and senseless. The minute of the meeting is there and will convince anyone in doubt.”

Benjamin Kalu: The power of focus, triumph over distractions

If not for the good and protection of the unsuspecting members of the public who may be hoodwinked into believing the series of invidious hogwash deliberately written against my principal, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu in the media recently, I wouldn’t have batted an eyelid for a rebuttal because the purveyors would certainly feel dignified with a response.

For starters, I had taken a position earlier to ignore those claptraps as they didn’t speak to any significant issue of social or economic importance or development which has been the drive in our political trajectory. But consequent upon the delugeness of the onslaughts and the need to correct the wrong narratives, I am persuaded to change my position.

Besides, I have been inundated with calls from various quarters of the society for my reactions and, naturally, when calls reach a crescendo, showing sufficient predilection for a response, anyone would be compelled to budge. And this is it.

First. It was an opinionated piece title “Kalu’s Quest To Promote Regional Agenda As House Deputy Speaker” authored by one Dayo Akinwale published in Thisday Newspaper on July 1, 2024 wherein he spewed unprovoked hate and animosity, painting the Deputy Speaker with an ethnic brush.

The second piece ensued from one Mbaukwu Ihedigbo. Apparently coming from a known background, the minion, understandably an e-rat, propelled by his affinity with the powers-that-be in Abia State, danced naked on Facebook through a piece titled “The Urgent Need to Halt Hon. Ben Kalu’s Political Maneuvering and Why Governor Alex Otti Should Be Vigilant”.

Yet, on a dramatic turn and in quick succession, one Adebiyi Omotosho Dan collated the publications in his article titled “Local Boy Gone Bananas: Kalu’s Descent into Controversies” published on Opera news on July 12, 2024.

What a tittle-tattle from a bunch of delusional ignoramuses who obviously deserve our collective pity.

To my chargrin, Dayo struck the cord of infantilism when he fathomed and justified his diatribe with Kalu’s consistent efforts to advance the cause of Ndi Igbo and catalyze the development of the eastern region.

Worst of it all is that a reputable national newspaper like ThisDay tolerated Dayo’s unabashed indiscretion when he submitted that Kalu’s advocacy on the release of the IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was a sin.

One would have thought that Dayo who is understood to be a parliamentary reporter, covering the proceedings of the House of Representatives would have picked up a better faultline like incompetence and tell the world that Kalu was not fit for the job but no, he took the unsavory route, plunging himself into pettiness and rabble rousing in abject ignorance and crass idiosy, displaying his tremendous hatred for Kalu.

He did not punctuate on the self embrassing, delusional punchline afterwards but elatedly ethnicized the piece, thereby casting a slur on the sanctity of journalism profession. For anyone who knows his onions in the noble profession of journalism, truth, substance, accuracy and objectivity are the cannons as well as the golden rules. Put succinctly, they are the hallmarks of journalism, anywhere. But Dayo chose to dance naked on the pages of the newspaper with some celebratory air, unabashedly.

But it is gratifying to read him eulogize the legislative acumen, the oratory prowess and adept intellectual sagacity that define the political persona of Kalu. Even Kalu’s political opponents will agree that those are the distinct features that have made him a deputy speaker extraordinaire.

Read Dayo: “No one ever doubts the competence and capacity of the Deputy Speaker, even his political adversaries doff hat for him. Despite being a second term legislator in the House, he is well grounded in the legislative processes. The Bende-born lawmaker is also a delight to watch whenever he presides over the plenary. He’s a beauty to watch”.

Yes, Kalu may not be your regular politician but he’s surely your passionate leader that is promoting patriotism and and typifying nationalism, not ethnicism or parochialism. Kalu’s passion for the oneness of Nigeria is overt and unassailable. In his legislative duties and responsibilities, he has equally shown remarkable zeal and zest. No ethnic jingoist or tribal enthusiast would embark on a sprawled advocacy to relaunch his region into the mainstream politics for national cohesion and integration. No ethnic bigot would wear Nigeria and the embroidery of diversity. No tribal activist would spread appointments to accommodate the heterogeneity of Nigeria. But that is Kalu in his pure Nigerianness. He did it. Kalu would rather be championing secession and similar preachments with his position if he was pursuing a regional agenda. Far from it. The deputy speaker is a nationalist. A pan-Nigerian and this is exemplified by the preponderance of his engagements across the federation.

And then, you ask, what is wrong in appealing to the authorities for the release of his kinsman who has been in the gulags for years? You also ask, what is wrong in Kalu preaching peace and amplifying the message of love amongst Nigerians? You also ask, what is wrong in Kalu calling and galvanizing his people to support the party in power? You ask again, what is wrong in Kalu inviting Nigeria to his native town of Bende in Abia State during the unveiling of his pet project, Peace In South East (PISE-P) to declare the restoration of peace and treat his august visitors to the hospitality of Ndigbo? And what is wrong in the appeals for non kinetics as a measure to quelling youth restiveness and addressing insecurity and the concomitant sociological effects and disparities?

This must be Kalu’s array of misdemeanours that elicited anger in Dayo and his co-travellers and catapulted them to the path of infamy and perfidy. Dayo’s journey to the wide plains can only find summary in one word: Ignorance of the ethos of his journalistic calling. And this suffices.

Equally, the lackey from Abia, my home State went suicidal in his wailing and wilful attempt to create a deceitful social media narrative that Kalu was plotting to take over the government house by 2027.

Referring him as an agent provocateur may be appropriate just to describe his clomping around, struggling to be noticed, at least for his nuisance value. This is why I was reluctant, ab initio, to rebut.

Ihedigbo’s headache is that Abians and indeed, Nigerians have fallen in love with Kalu’s legislative prowess and technical competences. His worry is that individuals across the State have decided to group themselves in solidarity to his growing political profile and influences. So, for him, this is all about 2027 elections and for that, Kalu should be checked and stopped before he outwits and outflanks Governor Otti from the government house.

Of course, this alarm may be a sundry display of youthful exuberance but, for me, it is of cataclysmic impudence. Anyone who is very familiar with Kalu’s style of politics will attest to the fact that he has never been inebriated by the strength of the federal politics. He might be an opposition in Abia from Abuja but it is not in his totems to distance himself from issues that will contribute to the growth and development of his home State. Recall that he always attended important meetings of State during the administration of Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu who was PDP. In the present regime, Kalu I’d also giving his unflinching support to Governor Otti. So, to have one street urchin line up some combustibles, ostensibly to injure the wall of relationship and destroy the affinity that exists between Otti and Kalu is to play the Devil’s advocate. And people like him should be kept far from the corridors of powers with serious alacrity as a way of containing their toxins.

For purposes of recapitulation, Kalu has a job in Abuja that he is passionately and diligently discharging. He is not talking politics. He’s talking governance and that is his lot for now.

It is needless to tell these mischief makers and alarmists that while they were basking in the euphoria of their unbridled, ignoble and ludicrous fantasy of gossips, Kalu was busy with state matters, engaging with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja, presiding over the plenary sessions, chairing the meetings of the Constitutional Review Committee in Lagos and attending the south east stakeholders meeting of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State for the good of the country.

Now enter the Omotosho Dan guy from Opera news. For a better understanding of his role, call him a middlesome interloper. His swift chronological compilation of the publications and their torrential timelines gave him up as a mercenary. He wears the toga of a man recording many slips of his enemy but I got news for him: Kalu’s colleagues are pleased with him and he clearly understands that his position is a privileged one. The deputy speaker does not see himself as anybody’s boss but a servant-leader unanimously called by his contemporaries to serve them.

Dan also needs to understand the age-long rules of the House and the constitutional provision that in the absence of the speaker, the deputy speaker presides. And it also suffices to inform that speaker Abbas has explicit confidence in Kalu to run the affairs of the House in his absence with the support of the members.

Incidentally, these haters and wailing wailers (apologies to Mr. Femi Adesina) completely forgot the place of divine grace in Kalu’s geometric rise in politics.

Maybe, it will be right at this juncture to tell Dan that Hon. Cyril Hart did not stage a walk-out. You call it a walk-out when one leaves one’s seat in the course of an argument. But in this case, Hon. Hart resumed his seat after baring his mind to the deputy speaker at the plenary. He remained there until the gavel went down on the issue at stake. It was after the motion had been referred to the appropriate committee of the House that he left his seat. This was the case and nothing more. Maybe, I should also tell Dan that, procedurally, a matter of personal explanation has its time and does not happen midway into the proceedings or be allowed to take the place of matter of privilege. But Kalu as the presiding officer was fair on his colleague to have allowed him to speak under personal explanation instead of privilege at the time. Maybe, I should also go a step further to tell Dan that the lawmaker has since apologized and reconciled with Kalu as revealed by the deputy speaker at the plenary on Thursday last week. Maybe, I should also tell the writer that when a member at the plenary that same day demanded an unreserved apology from Hart for his conduct that painted all the first timers with the same brush, Kalu pleaded with him to allow the sleeping dog lie. That is the application of emotional intelligence. That is leadership. That is Kalu.

Of course, he doesn’t see himself as a demi god or a man on infallibilities. No. Kalu is human and therefore not immune from flaws and frailties. He also needs the support of his immediate colleagues, all and sundry to succeed. Success is what should matter to us all and not this orchestrated plan to pull him down.

As the days go by, watch him deliver on his mandate in another appreciable dimension.

    Benjamin Kalu’s huge sacrifice

Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu is a new-generation political bigwig whose future in the Nigerian political terrain is seemingly bright.

Despite being in his early 50s, his foray into the murky waters of politics has got people talking about what a man of poise and finesse like him is looking.

He has always told those who care to listen that his entry into politics is not for personal gain but to contribute his quota to bettering the lives of his people of Bende Federal Constituency.

With an impeccable scorecard, he has built his profile politically setting unprecedented records. Today, the Abia State-born Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly has, once again, crested his name in gold with his declaration on the floor of the House where he moved a motion for members to slash their salaries by 50 per cent to stand in solidarity with Nigerians amid biting economy and hunger.

After raising the motion, other members who saw the sincerity of purpose in the motion also agreed to adjust to the new reality for six months to show Nigerians that members of the House of Representatives care for their constituents.

Sources say the motion could only be spearheaded by him because of his cordial relationship with his colleagues. They also cited the fact that he gives listening ears and opens his doors to all sundry on development and national matters as more reason why no one opposed the motion.

He is also working assiduously to bring peace to the Southeast. This led to his campaign for peace in the region months ago. He also aims at driving religious heads, monarchs to political leaders and opinion leaders from across Nigeria to uphold peace and stability within the Southeast to halt kidnappings and killings, among other security issues, affecting the growth and development of the region.
