    Suspected herdsmen kill nine in Benue communities

    Despite the deployment of massive security personnel, suspected herdsmen yesterday afternoon attacked two communities in Benue State killing nine farmers.

     The attacks and killings took place in Ayilamo ,Tombo ward in Logo Local Government Area  and Jato Acka, in Kwande Local Government Area.

     The armed herdsmen numbering over 20 stormed the sleepy town of Jato Acka  in broad daylight and shot sporadically. Six persons were killed in the process.

     The murderous herders thereafter moved to  Ayilamo town in Tombo ward  through Ikyungwa axis and killed  three persons   including  personnel of  Livestock Guard.

     A community leader, Tyovenda Igyutu, told The Nation  that but for the  quick intervention of soldiers and police, Ayilamo town would have been completely razed down .

     In Jato acka , Lawrence Akerigba, a youth leader who confirmed the attack and killings said ” the invaders stormed the town at about 4 pm on Friday and set houses ablaze. People  were shot and killed.”

    Benue Police Command said it was  yet to get any report regarding the attacks.

    Suspected herdsmen have launched fresh blistering attacks on  Ayilamo settlement killing six persons in the process.

     Ayilamo is the headquarters of Tombo Ward, Gaambietiev ,Logo Local Government Area of  Benue State.

     The attacks took place on Friday and yesterday in the farming community located on Abinsi- Anyiin – Wukari federal highway.

     Wukari in Taraba State shares boundary with Benue State and there has often been communal strife between the neighbouring communities.

     An eyewitness, Terwase Avande told The Nation that suspected armed  herdsmen with herds of cattle stormed Ayilamo , Tombo Ward ,at about 6 pm from the direction of Akwana Road and started shooting at houses and setting them ablaze.

     ” The herdsmen came alongside their cattle, well-armed, as they shot  at houses , while the cattle advanced into the main Ayilamo town”

     Avande stated that but for the  timely intervention of  members of Operation Whirl Stroke , a military troop ,who repealed the attackers, Ayilamo would have been overrun.

     He said three persons were shot and killed in the  Friday attack.

     Again on Saturday ,the herdsmen returned  at about 2pm, despite the presence of military personnel and opened fire at Ayilamo Police Station, located on Uzer – Makurdi road .

     “The armed herdsmen supported by a militia from a neighbouring state, shot at Ayilamo Police Station, forcing the  policemen on duty to flee. They went into the police station and smashed the window glasses and scattered some documents. Three persons were killed in the Friday attacks, “said Avande.

     A community leader ,Chief Paul Adetsav told The Nation that ” attempt to overrun the community is as a  result of some mineral resources which were said to have been found in the area .

     Adetsav said “so many mineral resources have been found in Tombo land  , and illegal mining activities have been going on until Benue State put a stop to it.

    “Since then, the intensity of the attacks has increased. The invaders keep threatening us with bloody violence on a daily basis , killing and maiming our people and setting our houses ablaze.

     ” We no longer go to our farms. The few planted crops have been destroyed by the armed herdsmen using cows who go into the farms  and  match over them .Hunger is killing us and our children have nothing to eat for years.

    “The government who has oversight over security is doing nothing to save us. Gradually, the invaders who are well armed are closing up on Ayilamo with a population of over 400,000 people.”

     At press time, residents of the area were seen fleeing the farming community in their numbers. Mothers with children on their backs were seen trekking long distances to safe places.

    The Logo Divisional Police office in Ugba confirmed the attacks and killings.

    The Chairman of Logo Local Government Council, Hon.Clement Ukav, confirmed the incident and assured that he was doing everything possible to arrest the situation.

    A Tiv group known as Kwande United Peoples Organisation (KWUPO) has accused herdsmen of killing 10 persons in renewed attacks in Kwande Local Government Area on Sunday.

    Addressing a news conference in Makurdi, Benue State capital yesterday, the President General of KWUPO, Mr. Levi Ikum, said the renewed attacks which began on Sunday night continued till press time on Wednesday.

    He called on security agencies to intervene in the worsening security situation in the local government area located in Benue North East Senatorial District, sharing boundary with Taraba State.

    Represented by the National Publicity Secretary of the organization, Hon. Kator Atsaga Anemba, who read the text of the press briefing, the group said that eight corpses of the 10 people killed had been recovered while efforts were on to recover the rest.

    Anemba said the death toll would likely rise because the attackers came at midnight and opened fire on harmless villagers who were fast asleep.

    “In the melee that ensued, they gunned many people down, including women and children,” he said.

    Going down memory lane, he said the attacks on Kwande people by suspected herdsmen began in 2013, putting the casualty figure since then at over 6,000.

    “An estimation of our losses since 2013 puts the toll in human lives at over 6,000 persons killed, over 100,000 displaced and properties worth over N4 billion destroyed.

    “In Moon Council Ward, almost the entirety of the five kindred of the area have been overrun and, by conservative estimates, less than 10% of the population of the area is taking refuge at Anyiase, having nowhere else to run to.

    “In Mbadura Council Ward, an estimated half of the area has been overrun and the people displaced with the entirety of Mbaav kindred overrun and the people displaced.

    “In Yaav Council Ward, three out of the five kindred have been overrun by armed herdsmen and the people displaced.

    “Same in Mkômon District, half of Mbaikyôr Council Ward comprising Tyuluv and Kendev-Ya wards have been overrun and the people displaced.

    “Also in Anem village and Shor Asase, both in Ikyurav-Ya area, estimated half of the population has been displaced and their lands taken over by the invading herdsmen.”

    The group appealed to Governor Hyacinth Alia and President Bola Tinubu to provide security personnel for Kwande people before they are wipe out of existence.

    They also appealed to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), to provide relief materials to the displaced persons who they said were down with sickness and hunger.

    “We also want to correct the erroneous impression that there is a clash between Kwande farmers and herdsmen. What is happening is genocide and attack against the people of Kwande by herdsmen who have taken over their land,” he said.

    He called for the setting up of a military unit in Kwande, which shares international boundary with Cameroon, as a way out of the sustained attacks and killings in Kwande Local Government Area by suspected armed herdsmen.

    The Benue State Police Command said it was yet to get any information from Kwande.

    JUST IN: Suspected herdsmen destroy yam seedlings, cassava farms in Benue community

    Suspected herdsmen have destroyed yam seedlings and cassava farms worth millions in Chembe village, Gaambetiev, Logo Local Government area of Benue State.

    Chembe settlement, located on Anyiin- Wukari federal old road, has been under sustained herdsmen attacks for 10 years.

    Most residents on the axis are in Internally Displaced Camps (IDPs) in Anyiin, the country home of former Governor Gabriel Suswam. They only return to the farm between 9 am and 4 pm.

    The owner of the yam seedling and cassava farm Eric Chembe told The Nation: ” I got call from one of my elder brother’s wives that my yam seedlings and cassava farm of more than half a hectare was completely consumed by suspected herdsmen who grazed on my farms with their cattle late into the night.

     “Since I got the sad news I am restless because the cassava is my main investment which I spent a lot of money cultivating.

    “As a family man, who depends largely on my farm produce for survival and because of the harsh economy, I need no soothsayers to tell me that troubles have instantly doubled.”

    He put the cost of the destruction of the yam seedlings and cassava at over N50m and called on security agencies to protect farmers if the Federal Government is serious about food sufficiency.

    Suspected herdsmen on Sunday, March 3, attacked and killed five farmers in Udedeku community, Maav-Ya, Mkoonmom district, Mbaikyor Council Ward, Turan Jato-Aka Kwande local government area in Benue state.

    An eye witness Terlumen Kwaghbee who escaped the attack told The Nation on the phone that suspected armed herdsmen stormed the community under the guise of grazing and opened fire on harmless farmers who were back from church service on Sunday morning.

    Kwagbee said: “Five persons were killed at the spots, many others sustained various degrees of injuries, while houses were set ablaze.”

    According to him, the bodies of those killed have been deposited at a morgue in the area.

    The Nation investigation revealed that for more than 10 years, Moon district including five other council wards in Turan and three council wards in Ikyurav-Ya, all in Kwandel local government area in Benue state have been occupied by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

    Meanwhile, the House of Representatives member, representing the Kwande/Ushongo federal constituency, Hon. Ugbor condemned the killings of his people by suspected herdsmen.

    Hon. Ugbor said the people of Udeku village, Mbaikyor council ward of Turan are peaceful loving people, who are more concerned with their farming activities and called on security agencies to fish out the perpetrators.

    In a statement signed by his special assistant on media and publicity, Dagu Fred, and made available to The Nation, he described the attack and killing as a setback in his effort to promote peace in his Kwande-Ushongo federal constituency.

    Ugbor also called for better collaboration by all stakeholders, including security agencies, traditional rulers, policymakers, and governments at all levels to end the incessant killings in Kwande and the environs.

    He called on security forces to move in and immediately quell the volatile situation in the constituency and provide relief materials to assist his displaced constituents who are currently in Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, camps without means of livelihood.

    Benue state police command said they are yet to get the report of the incidents from Kwande, which is in the Benue North senatorial zone and shares a boundary with Taraba and Cameroon.
