‘Oloture’ role left me depressed for three months – Actress Beverly Osu

Actress and model Beverly Osu has opened up on her struggles with depression after starring in the Netflix original film Òlòtūré.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Pidgin, Osu revealed that the intense nature of her role led to an identity crisis, causing her to battle depression for three months.

As a ‘method’ actor, Osu said she fully immerses herself in her characters, which can make it challenging to detach from them after filming ends.

She said: “What we are is what they call method actors. I can’t just read a script, execute it, and then in two days become another person. It takes a lot of mental detox before I can enter into another character.

“When I shot Òlòtūré and left the set, I was depressed for three months because of an identity crisis. I was trying to search and piece together fragments of Beverly in order to bring myself back.”

AMVCA awards now focus on clout over craft – Beverly Osu

Actress Beverly Osu has expressed her disappointment with the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), stating that the focus has shifted from the craft of filmmaking to social media clout and red carpet appearances.

According to Osu’s series of tweets on X, the industry’s emphasis on numbers and online presence is overshadowing the hard work of storytellers, technicians, and performers.

Osu draws a comparison with the Cannes Film Festival, which has implemented rules to maintain a professional atmosphere on the red carpet.

In contrast, she feels that AMVCA has deviated from its original purpose of celebrating African cinematic excellence, instead becoming more focused on spectacle and social media attention.

Osu wrote, “AMVCA has lost the plot. It’s time to bring the focus back to the work, not just the wow. This is one of the few times filmmakers unwind, celebrate, and reconnect. Filmmaking in general isn’t a joke. It’s no longer about the craft. It’s about clout. Social media numbers are being prioritised over performances. The Red carpet feels louder than the awards. The heart of the industry, the storytellers, the technicians, the performers, are being drowned by corsets and algorithms. While Cannes is setting boundaries by banning nudity and massive trains on the red carpet to refocus attention on actors and filmmakers, AMVCA is spiralling in the opposite direction. What was once a celebration of African cinematic excellence now looks like a masquerade parade.”

“God’s timing is the best and we are happy that now we have made more than that money. If I had the money then, I probably would not have known what to do with it then. I didn’t have the experience to make it impactful in my life so yeah, so far I’m winning in life now”

“In Babcock University everything was nice and education was going well but because I was on TV at the age of 16 as a video vixen.

“Nigerians did not understand the term video vixen then so they always used to criticise me and take pictures to school. I used to get in trouble in school every weekend, and I mean every weekend,” she said.

On why she left the institution, she said: “I just felt that let me leave before it gets sour, you know how Babcock is, it’s very strict for lack of a better word. I left because I felt so comfortable doing what I was doing and I knew I could balance it, so I left.”

She said: “Family first said this girl is very stubborn, let us throw her in there and I just said okay,”

“Na reverend sister they picked for me so I had to follow the path but they expelled me.

“Till today, I still have small resentment like, ‘Why una expel me?’ But then, I used to play secular music, I was the drum prefect and I used to do stage plays.

“Some girls woke up and said after the stage play, they were seeing me in their dreams and I am a witch because I played Lucifer.

“They expelled me because they said I was doing the most with the band, with the stage play, with not sleeping on my bed.

“They asked me to go and continue God’s work somewhere else. They did not want to say it was expulsion but gave me a letter never to come back.”
