I almost lost my life to religious zealots, says self-confessed bi-sexual

Yetunde Adagunduro, 32, an indigene of Ogun State, who currently resides in Canada is in a desperate situation and needs a lifeline.

A self-confessed bi-sexual, Adagunduro, a nurse, who used to live and practise in Badagry, Lagos, recently told The Nation in a telephone interview how she almost got killed by religious zealots in Nigeria due to her sexual preference, causing her to flee to Canada for safety.

She spoke of how her life was in danger back in Nigeria and how returning to Nigeria would be suicidal, going by the level of persecution she suffered at hand of her uncle and an influential Muslim cleric (names withheld), as well as her uncle’s friend, whom she was to be betrothed to.

Trouble started for Yetunde when her family discovered in her teenage years that she was attracted to both genders, but particularly the (female) gender. Her mother, a devout Muslim, soon caught her red-handed, having an affair with her friend, causing her to uproot her from their immediate environment, to go live with her uncle in Ado-Odo, a distant town. News had spread fast about my affair with her friend and her mum couldn’t put up with the shame.

“Unfortunately, that was no solution, Yetunde recounted, as I soon met Ameerat, the daughter of the leader of the feared Muslim sect in Ado Odo. Ameerat got attracted to me and we met on one occasion in Ota. We got talking and eventually fell in love. We worked out plans on how to meet in her place and at my uncle’s place, which was a stone throw.

“During one of our escapades, Ameerat’s mum saw us in a rather compromising position and decided to monitor us closely. She saw through Ameerat’s phone, our nude photographs and sex videos and immediately reported to her strict husband.

“After severe beating, Ameerat confessed and that was when things took a scary dimension for me. The members of the Islamic sect started threatening my life with the argument that I had broken Islamic laws, teachings and doctrines and therefore deserved to die.

“The threats continued and my uncle decided to force me into marrying his rich friend, a man old enough to be my father. I, however, refused, which further compounded my situation.

“The old man combined forces with Ameerat’s father and my uncle to deal with me and members of my family, especially my siblings. This caused me to leave Lagos for Abuja.

“In Abuja, I discovered that these people were highly connected and influential, as they used all avenues and means within their reach in government circles to sustain their threats and even stormed my hideout where I was staying with my boyfriend’s sister. They vandalised the place in Garki. All efforts to use law enforcement agencies to stop them failed. At this point, I applied for a visa to travel to the United Kingdom, where I felt their influence could not reach and I could feel safe.

“The whole process was delayed and as the threats got to a rather scary level, my family pleaded that I seeked further means to travel out. This led me to seek Canadian documents, which I eventually got.

“On the eve of my trip to Canada, the sect members attacked my home in Ogun and Badagry in Lagos simultaneously, destroying my properties and attempting to injure my siblings.

“Thankfully, I was able to get out unhurt, and now I am hoping that the Canadian government would grant me a stay, so that I won’t have to return to those hounds.”
