  • IPOB: Kanu calls off election boycott

Leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has called off the proposed boycott of elections by his ground in the entire South-East region.

Kanu said the decision was reached following wide consultations with “stakeholders.”

Kanu had severally warned that elections would only hold in any part of the zone on the condition of a referendum to determine the sovereignty of Biafra.

But in a statement on Friday by the group’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB said the boycott order was lifted after all terms and conditions were met by “those wishing us to lift the ban on voting.”

The statement partly reads: “It’s important we notify the world at large and the indefatigable global IPOB family in particular that our supreme leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has called-off the election boycott in Biafraland.

“After a brief emergency session of the Directorate of State late last night presided over by our leader, it was determined that all our terms and conditions had been met by those wishing us to lift the ban on voting, it was unanimously agreed that the boycott should be lifted.

“The signed document agreeing to IPOB terms and conditions are in our possession and will be made public in due course.

“We can, therefore, state with utmost sense of responsibility and pride that IPOB has accomplished what no other people or group has been able to do in the history of our people.

“Without prejudice, this will go down as the defining moment when the irreversibility of the restoration of Biafra was firmly entrenched in the subconscious of all and sundry.

“As a result of which we can state categorically that Biafra is a lot closer than we think as a result of this.

  • Remain indoors during presidential poll, IPOB orders members

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has urged its members and supporters of calls for realisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra to sit indoors on February 16 slated for presidential and National Assembly elections.

According to the pro-Biafra group, February 16 has marked out as a day for Biafran Referendum in Biafra land.

The Pro-Biafra group warned anybody who disobeys the order and come out on the February 16, would have him or herself to blame.

Such person, it stated, would be treated as an enemy independent state of Biafra.

In a statement by Comrade Emma Powerful, the Publicity Secretary of the group, IPOB stated that any person or persons who ventured out on that day would be seen as supporting the continued suffering, kidnapping, abduction, killing, massacre and total marginalisation of the Biafran people.

The statement reads: ” Following the much expected date for Biafra referendum, which is now scheduled to hold its first run on 16th February 2019 alongside the Nigeria presidential election on same date, we the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) wish to categorically declare that anybody who did not stay indoors or happens to venture outside on the day of presidential election would be regarded as having voted against Biafra.

“Such person or persons would be seen as supporting one Nigeria and responsible for the continued suffering, kidnapping, abduction, killing, massacre and total marginalization of our people.

“February 16, 2019 is a rare and golden opportunity to make an everlasting impression on the world stage that we Biafrans are prepared to sacrifice everything sacrifice-able, including the position of the vice presidential, to prove to humanity that we value our freedom more than any earthly or material consideration.

“Our quest for Biafra has gone beyond the point of no return. In order to live as free men under God in a new republic of Biafra, we must not only stay indoors on the 16th of February 2019, we must ensure that Biafra land is completely locked down.

“Anybody or family found outside on Election Day will perpetually suffer the ignominy of being labelled a traitor; a burden that family will bear for eternity.

“We are mindful that Nigeria is one giant fraudulent cave where ethnic nationalities are held down in bondage in an unworkable artificially created purgatory.

“We are therefore cautioning every hungry Fulani slave across Biafra land and their new recruits who intend to come out on that day, to quickly retrace their steps, because IPOB will not take lightly any attempt by these shameless quislings to scuttle this hard fought battle to set the people free.

IPOB added: “It doesn’t matter who you are or what position you think you occupy in society, once you support Nigeria, you become an enemy of the people.

“Setting foot outside your door on February 16 for Nigeria election will be validating repeated refusal by Federal Government of Nigeria to cite any capital projects in Biafra land. You will be the reason why this Fulanised APC government had the temerity to bring Operation Python Dance to our land whereas Fulani herdsmen who are busy slaughtering innocent souls are given preferential treatment and army protection.

“Stepping outside on the 16th of February will mean that Enugu-Onitsha Express way, Enugu-Igweocha Express way and Second Niger Bridge will never be built. You will be the reason why all seaports and airports in Biafra land will never function.

“You will be the reason why high cut-off mark discriminates against our gifted children while northern kids make it to Unity Schools with little or no score at all.”

  • Participate in 2019 elections, MASSOB directs members

Foremost pan Biafra group, Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra ( MASSOB ) on Friday directed its members in the forthcoming general elections.

MASSOB gave the directive after its National Executive meeting presided over by its leader Comrade Uchenna Madu at Awgu, Enugu state.

The meeting was attended by all the state, zonal, LGA coordinators and National Directors.

A statement by the group directed the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) should be allowed “to conduct elections in Biafra land for those that still believe in Nigeria state”.

“MASSOB advised that other pro Biafra groups that planned to boycott the elections are entitled to stay at home during elections days,” according to a statement by its Director of Information, Comrade Samuel Edeson.

MASSOB added: “In recognition of the freedom of political participation and exercises, we declare that this year general elections in Nigeria will not be stopped or boycotted in Biafra land.

“Our people that still believe in Nigeria projects are free to participate in the electoral processes of Nigeria including this year as we have allowed INEC to conduct elections in Biafra land.”

The group, however, reaffirmed commitment to actualisation of Biafra through the principles of non- violence and international diplomacy in collaboration and brotherhood with other progressive pro Biafra groups.

“MASSOB, having realised that Biafrans cannot forcefully impose our desirable interest on the people of Nigeria and also having understood the principles of non -violence, MASSOB unanimously agreed and resolved that Nigeria state will independently and internally observe and conduct their political exercises including general elections.

“That Nigeria elections will come and go irrespective of whoever that wins in both national and state elections.

“That we must continue with Biafra projects of actualization irrespective of both internal and external distractions.”

  • 2019: Olawepo Hashim vows to heal wounds of Biafra

The People’s Trust (PT) presidential candidate in the forthcoming 2019 election, Mr.Gbenga Olawepo Hashim assured South Easterners that he would implement measures that will heal the pains felt people of the region and make Nigeria truly united.

He also promised to create an additional state in the Southeast  if Nigerians elect him as their president in February 2019.

Hashim who was in Enugu on Friday where he met with various groups in preparation of his nationwide campaign told the people that Nigeria was not what many had envisaged but his presidency would surely bring unity and harmony among the various divides.

Hashim also consulted with stakeholders and community leaders in the South East geo-political zone.

According to him, there was the need for equity in the Nigerian federation.

He observed that only the South East has five states, out of the six geopolitical zones in the country, when others have at least six states.

Hashim said if elected president, he would create a legislative framework within six months for the creation of one more state in the South East, so that the region would be in the same footing with the rest of the country.

“2019 elections is going to be an unusual election, in the sense that it is almost a referendum on the future of Nigeria, on its peace and stability, on its security, on its continuity and of course, most importantly, about the prosperity of Nigeria.

“The South East zone is very crucial. The way we handle issues that affect us and are germane to the people would determine whether we will continue to live in unity and peace as an indivisible entity.

“And of course, there have been a lot of wounds in this part of Nigeria. People carry a lot of wounds. Just like a lot of communities in Nigeria and states also carry some kinds of wounds. But there is no other place in Nigeria where these wounds are so deep as we have it in the South East of Nigeria,” Hashim said.

He said his ticket was committed to uniting Nigeria and reconciling the people so that they could face the task of national development  without any handicap, noting  that as long as any section in Nigeria feels they were conquered people, so would the difficult task of nation building becomes more challenging.

He said he came to the South East to tell the people that there is a presidential candidate who is irrevocably committed to healing the wounds of the region.

The youthful presidential candidate equally assured that his administration would decentralize power in the country within six months by amending the exclusive and the concurrent legislative lists to ensure that states have greater role in resource mobilization and deployment .Apart from the South East, Hashim noted that Nigeria needs security urgently now that out of the 19 northern states, only six currently enjoy some level of stability.

“One of the reasons why killings go on endlessly in Nigeria is the fact that nobody is brought to book when they commit murder. That is why some say the lives of Nigerians have become so cheap. Under our presidency, the life of every Nigerian will count equal,” Hashim said.

  • Oppressive

It is interesting that the controversial Biafra campaign has spawned newspapers.  The secession movement generates news and there are niche newspapers that make such news their business.

But it wasn’t business as usual for these newspapers when officials of the Department of State Services (DSS), on November 9, raided newspaper vendors in Asaba, the Delta State capital. A report said the raiders confiscated over 1,000 copies of “Biafra-related tabloids – Biafra Times, Biafra Star, Biafra Republic, Biafra Rising Sun, Biafra Voice, Biafra Journal and Biafra Trust.”

The report gave further details: “All major newspaper centres in the city were raided. They included those on Ibusa Road, Nnebisi Road, and Mixed Secondary School area. The officials did not state their reasons for the raid but onlookers said the development might not be unconnected with recent comments made by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu. Vendors located along Summit Road, Okpanam Road, Anwai Road, West-End Road, Abraka and Cable-Point area were not left out…”

An October 19 online video showing the controversial leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, praying in Israel, extended an attention-grabbing drama that began with his disappearance on September 14, 2017. His reappearance 13 months after was as mysterious as his disappearance.

Kanu had disappeared while on bail. Kanu was facing trial for “alleged offences of conspiracy to commit acts of treasonable felony and other related offences.” A military exercise in the Southeast, “Operation Python Dance,” was ongoing at the time soldiers allegedly invaded Kanu’s house in Afara-Ukwu Ibeku, Umuahia, Abia State, leading to his disappearance. After he surfaced at the Wailing Wall in the Holy City of David in Jerusalem, he spoke publicly on October 21.

Talking of the Asaba raid, it is not clear what triggered the raid. A female newspaper distributor affected by the raid was quoted as saying: “They (DSS officials) were on a dangerous mission. They came with rifles of different shapes and in their usual black-black uniform. I wanted to run but one of them aimed his gun at my leg. At this point, I had to stop. They ransacked my newspapers’ stand and collected all those that have Biafra as their mastheads.”

This operation was carried out without any explanation. But the raiders and those who gave the order for the raid owe the public an explanation, if not an apology.  The action was oppressive.

  • IPOB Sit-at-home: Aba residents shun security directives

Despite assurances of safety of lives and property of residents and visitors to the state by heads of various security agencies in Abia State, residents, traders, private and government workers in Aba, the commercial nerve of the State on Friday stayed away from their shops and offices as the Indigenous People of Biafra ( IPOB ) hold sit-at-home across the southeast states.

A release by the spokesman of the secessionist group, Emma Powerful had urged the people to stay away from their offices and shops in honour of their late colleagues who were murdered in Afaraukwu, the country home of their leader and Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu by soldiers.

Our correspondent who monitored compliance to the sit-at-home order by the IPOB, reports that while there was compliance to the order in Aba, it was business as usual in Umuahia, the state capital as the people were seen going about their businesses without any harassment by anybody.

According to our reporter, while the gates of major markets in Aba including Ariaria International market, Cemetery, Shopping Plaza, Ahia Ohuru, Bakassi among others were open, traders however stayed away from their shops.

While some commercial banks at the time of this report were running skeletal services, some of the staff interviewed disclosed that they were open for business because they didn’t get official memo from their headquarters directing them to stay away from work today. Offices, shops along Okigwe, Azikiwe, kent, Market, Aba-Owerri roads respectively were however devoid of their usual hustling and bubbling.

Police patrol vans were spotted stationed at Sameck by Faulks, Market road by Shopping Center and other strategic places in the commercial city.

In a chat with a senior police officer in Abia State Police Command who pleaded not to be mentioned said that they were stationed at various flash points in Aba and other parts of the state in order to forestall any breakdown of law and order by any group of person who would want to capitalized on the IPOB sit-at-home to foment troubles or stop citizens of the state from going to their normal duties.

Some members of the pro-Biafra group members who spoke to our reporter thanked the people and residents of Aba for complying with the orders of the group.

The respondents, including Ifeanyi Okafor described the day as a day of sober reflection and also used the opportunity to call on world bodies including the United Nations to investigate the killings in Afaraukwu in 2017 by soldiers.

Okafor said that no amount of intimidation from the federal government and security agencies would deter them from continuing with the peaceful agitation for the sovereign State of Biafra.

  • Biafra groups to Southeast politicians – Forget election in 2019

A coalition of pro-Biafra groups has warned political parties and aspirants of various political parties planning to campaign in the southeast in 2019 to forget embarking on such mission. This is even as they insisted that there won’t be any election in the entire Old Eastern region in 2019.

The groups; Biafra Defence Council”, All Youths for Biafra, among others said that they want the restoration of the Biafra republic which would liberate the people of the former Eastern region from oppression from the Nigerian government.

The groups lamented that the federal government under President Muhammadu Buhari had failed to protect lives and properties of Biafrans and urged the President to free Biafrans from oppression.

Briefing newsmen in Aba, spokesmen for the groups Comrade Sunny Okeh and Chidi Otah, said, ”Politicians from the former Eastern region should not be deceived , there will be no election anywhere in Biafra land in 2019.

“We are issuing this warning to our politicians that what ought to be paramount to them should the restoration of the Biafra republic. Election is not the solution to the problem of Biafra.

”We want to re-emphasize that there will no election in Biafra land in 2019.The international community has been informed and Biafrans sensitized. No force can challenge out resolve. It is our determination to restore Biafra where its people will greater freedom and accommodation.”

The groups added that they have mapped out strategies to ensure that no electoral activity is held in all the territories of the Eastern region.

  • 100-yr-old repairman’s Biafra regrets

No one knows how many antique wristwatches, bicycles or radio sets he brought back to life but one thing is certain: versatile Pa Benneth Chukwukadibia Uchendu, 100, who has retired as a radio repairman in Anambra State, regrets that one of his sons who would have succeeded him in his trade was killed in the Nigerian Civil War. EMMANUEL UDODINMA reports

ho would like to be repair watches, bicycles or radios for a living? Not many these days.

Pa Benneth Chukwukadibia Uchendu who hails from Alor in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State took on all three trades and more. He eventually settled for radio from which he made enough money to build his house apart from raising his family.

He loved his job but he also has quite a few regrets. The youth, he said, do not want to learn a trade; they want quick cash. Pa Uchendu is also troubled by one consequence of the Nigeria-Biafra War, which claimed one of his sons who would have taken over from him on retirement.

He spoke to The Nation at his country home, having officially retired as a radio ‘mechanic’ last year after over 60 years in the vocation which he practised from Warri now in Delta State to Nkwo Alor Market, his hometown.

With five male children, a female and grandchildren, and living in his own house, Uchendu ordinarily should be a happy man but that is not the case.

The man, who put his age at not less than 100, said his greatest regret was that nobody stepped into his shoes as he vacated his workshop at Nkwo Alor Market, where he plied his trade for decades.

According to him, youths of the area were not interested in such trade, because they want quick money. Unfortunately, the one that would have succeeded him was killed in the 30-month civil war.

The centenarian sobbed as he narrated that the workshop that provided food and shelter for him and his family as well as fetched him fame, especially within their locality, has been taken over by a patent medicine dealer, while his tools idled away since last year when he retired after his wife died.

He said, “It is a long story. It all started before the Nigeria-Biafra civil war in Warri now Delta State. I started as a bicycle repairman, and then diversified into repair of watches including all kinds of wall clocks before adding radio.

“I came back and established at my hometown Alor, when the war started. And even when the war was raging, I was busy practising my trade. I did not fight during the war because I was above the age needed for recruitment into the army. They were recruiting the younger ones. Besides, the federal troops did not enter Alor Town. Many came to take refuge in Alor. God really saved my community because that time, the federal troops were desperate to enter Nnewi, Dim Chukwuemeka  Odumegwu Ojukwu’s hometown through Alor but they could not do that before the war ended. So, I was busy doing my business.”

How did modern technology affect your business as a radio repairer?

That did not affect me at all. My customers were still coming because you know many people were and are still using radio sets not minding the ones they have in their phones. It did not affect me in any way.

How many people did you bring up in this trade?

When I was in Warri, I trained people from Nkpor and Aguleri, although the one from Aguleri didn’t survive the war. The other one is alive but he lives in the north. The number of people I trained is up to 10 but they are scattered here and there. There is another one from Ukwuani in Delta State.

Did you receive any formal training to be a radio repairer?

There was a man who I understudied, so to say. The fact is that I have a very sharp brain. I easily catch up with anything I come in contact with. So, I learnt from one man in Warri. I did not even go to school the way you are going today. I attended night school. But I know I’m very intelligent.

Is there anyone to continue from where you have stopped in this line of trade?

It is unfortunate that our people don’t like to learn trade. Everybody wants to start big and make it big even some without working for the fortune. I trained someone in my community but he died during the civil war. So, it is difficult to have a replacement because many people do not see the trade as something that could sustain them for life. That is the product of jet and computer age.

What gives you happiness in life?

I felt happy when people brought their items for repair and I was able to repair them to the satisfaction of the clients. I felt very happy at that moment. That gave me job satisfaction.

Could you give an insight into how you lived as a youth?

I was very careful in my youthful days. I was not a womaniser, I was not a drunkard or into rough life. Boys of this generation run after women and that ruins them. In my own time as a youth, I did not know women.

I remember what happened in Warri when I was a bachelor. There was this lady who used to call me her husband wherever she saw me. One day I went to church and came back to go where we normally played an indoor game, draught. It was my apprentice who was at home. So, my boy said the lady came looking for me. She took her bath in my home and went to rest on my bed and then left after a while. When my boy told me that, I had to gather all my beddings and burnt them; that tells you my attitude to women in my youth.

As for drinks, I managed to take that local gin, (kai kai), for some time and gave it up without anybody asking me to do so. If I went to a bar, I could request for a bottle of palm wine which I hardly finished. But there was a day I became drunk. That day my bed was turning upside down. That was the first and last day I was drunk in my life.

What’s your advice to youths of this generation?

They should know God. They should have the fear of God in them. It is unfortunate that many youths these days do not have fear of God in their doings. They do everything with impunity as if there is no God. But God records every activity of man and will pay back accordingly. They should start with God and end with Him in anything they do in life, if they want to succeed.

  • Nigeria should learn from Biafra, Ohanaeze, Afenifere warn

Chieftains of pan-Igbo organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and its Yoruba counterpart, Afenifere, have cautioned Nigerians to learn from Biafra to avoid a repeat of the horrifying episode in the nation’s political history.

They condemned the killings, saying these have left many displaced, malnourished and degraded.

The umbrella socio-cultural organisations noted that similar situations are factors that led to the 30-month Civil War.

They spoke at the presentation of a book: Shadows of Biafra, by Uchenna Nwankwo, at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) on Victoria Island in Lagos.

Civil war hero and grand patron of Lagos Ohanaeze, Chief Guy Ikokwu, who represented the president general of the organisation, Chief Nnia Nwodo Jnr., noted that living participants of the Civil War from major and minority ethnic nationalities not only regretted their roles of “brigandage and folly”, but “now want a better Nigeria with equity and justice for all”.

He said: “Biafra was a lesson to Nigeria and the Black race. There were a lot of human errors which could have been avoided by Nigerians and Biafrans. Some of the participants and actors are dead.

“And in the last few years, militia Fulani herdsmen with AK-47 guns, some of whom are foreigners, roam agricultural settlements with reckless abandon, killing recklessly thousands every year and claiming land ownership in the Middle Belt and southern states of Nigeria.”

Afenifere chieftain, Chief Supo Shonibare, who called for true federalism that allows for collective leadership, said: “Uchenna Nwankwo is a timely material that forces us to revisit the lessons of Biafra.”

A 1992 presidential aspirant on the platform of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP), Dr Uma Eleazu, who represented Falae, the chairman of the event, said: “We need to sit together to talk about and face our mistake.”

Other dignitaries at the event were former military governor of old Imo State and Lagos States as well as a chieftain of the defunct National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu (retired), Senator Ebenezer Ikeyinwa, Niger Delta activist Fred Agbeyegbe, His Royal Majesty Uche Dimgba Ezeudo, former Head of Service (HOS) of Lagos State, Chief Abeke Taire and legal practitioner, Tochukwu Ezukanma.

Ikokwu condemned the mayhem by Boko Haram and militia herdsmen.

The Ohanaeze chief urged the government to take proactive measures to end the menace.

He cited the upgrade and modernisation of the livestock industry to the modern ranch similar to the livestock equivalents overseas as the solution to a better rewarding beef, dairy, hides and skin industry.

The Igbo leader noted that this would enrich the nation’s economy through job creation and taxation.

  • Igbo monarch rejects Biafra, says secession agitation a fraud

A traditional ruler from Mbaise in Imo State, Eze Nwabueze Soronnadi Ezewiro, has distanced himself from the struggle for Biafra, describing the agitation as a fraud.

Addressing reporters in Calabar, the monarch said the only institutional body that represents Igbo people all over the world, is Ohaneze Ndigbo.

His words, “I am His Imperial Majesty Eze Nwabueze Soronnadi Ezewiro from Mbaise in Imo State as well as the Lord Mayor of the Igbo Nation and in Diaspora, Eze Agaba-Idu 1 of Igbo kingdom. Biafra is a fraud. Whichever way they take it but the truth has to be said anyway, the only institutional body that represents Igbo people all over the world is Ohaneze Ndigbo, not Biafra. Let me ask you one thing, when Odumegwu Ojukwu died, he was a General, he was given a state burial during the time of Jonathan, you saw in Nnewi that day that we, the Ohaneze Ndigbo were making our own preparation but the Presidency was doing the burial. His body was carried by Nigerian soldiers, so where are the Biafran soldiers to carry the body?

“When they’re talking about Biafra, is Biafra only Imo, Abia, Anambra Enugu and Ebonyi states? No. It should be South-South, South-East all incorporated because these are the old eastern region excluding Edo. Have you seen anybody from those South-South states supporting Biafra?

“We will put this thing on the table, get the Presidency, put our heads together and discuss this thing. But you can’t get it by force as if you are inciting to segregate from Nigeria federation.

“The Biafran thing as much as I am concerned is dead gone. It was in the mortuary, it has gone to the cemetery. Its dead, there’s nothing and there would not be anything like Biafra.”

The monarch also said the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, cannot impose his son in law as governor on the people in next year’s general election.
