Jos tension: Dambazau assures adequate security

The Minister of Interior, retired Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau, has assured Nigerians that the President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government would provide adequate security to protect lives and property of citizens.

Danbazau said this in Jos while on a fact finding mission to assess the tension in Jos caused by reactions to agitations for secession by Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Tension and confusion on Thursday evening in Jos resulted in the death of two people as confirmed by Gov. Simon Lalong but the situation was quickly contained.

The minister said that government had put in place adequate security measures to tackle any challenge that might rear its ugly head.

He commended Gov. Lalong and security agencies for their prompt reaction to contain the situation without much damage.

“I want to reiterate President Buhari’s assurances that all Nigerians have the right to stay wherever they want and government will protect their rights and privileges.

“I want to assure you that come Oct. 1, nobody will infringe on anybody’s rights wherever they are staying.

“Even those who issued the relocation statement have withdrawn it,” he said.

IPOB wrong on Nigeria division- ex-don

A retired Professor from the University of Benin, Professor Henry Igbinokpogie Amadasu, has faulted the agitation for secession by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Prof. Amadasun said the IPOB lacked the right to demand that Nigeria must be broken to pieces because everybody is fighting for the unity of the country.

Speaking to reporters as part of activities to mark his 80th birthday, Prof. Amadasun noted that the agitation by IPOB would have been unnecessary if the federal government had been able for provide the basic need for it citizen.

Prof. Amadasun stated that IPOB mist carry out its agitation with caution without infringing on the fundamental right of others.

He said, “It is true that people can always demand their right one way or the other but their must do it with caution. The way IPOB are going about it also infringed on the fundamental right of others.

“If you look at the few people that do not belong to IPOB, they differ with their struggle and are condemning it but IPOB is trying to drag to entire South East out of the country and by so doing IPOB is balkanising the country. So for that reason I appeal to both IPOB and the federal government to see reason and trend softly for peace to reign.

On the call for restructuring, Prof. Amadasun noted that restructuring is not the problem of Nigeria but good leadership that is alive to its responsibility.

“If there is electricity, good road and other basic amenities all these agitation will not be there.

“In America, nobody talk about restructuring, because the common man gets what they want. Do people in the market know what restructuring all about?

  • Biafra: South-South youths call for proscription of IPOB, want Kanu’s lawyer arrested

As reactions continue to greet the deployment of military forces under the name, Operation Python Dance 11 (Egwu Eke Ebo) to south-eastern, youths from the south-south region have called for the immediate proscription of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB before it becomes too late.

IPOB is a group under the leadership of Nnamdi Kanu, agitating for the rebirth of the defunct Republic of Biafra.

The group, under the aegis of Youths of Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Rivers, while welcoming the launching of the military operation in the region, observed that if Kanu and his group are not urgently tamed, Nigeria might be witnessing another heavy bloodbath.

Speaking at a press conference held in Calabar, the Cross River State Calital on Friday, National Co-ordinator of the youth group, Augustine Adeh, said the recent attacks on innocent Nigerians in Rivers State by hoodlums that identified as IPOB members was a clear indication that a military operation is needed to contain extreme tendencies set in motion by IPOB’s campaign of hatred which is spreading to some states in the South-south.

According to the youth leader, the group strongly warned Kanu to be ready to face the consequences if his group continues to prevent soldiers from carrying out their legitimate functions in the region.

Adeh said, “To us this launch of the operation is not unconnected with the success recorded by Operation Python Dance of 2016, which was widely credited for reducing crimes in the region before the Christmas festivities of that year.

“It is for this reason that those of us in Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Rivers remain elated at the launch of Operation Python Dance II. The operation is well received in our states and it is not for nothing that it is so.

“We are therefore concerned that Operation Python Dance II is at the risk of becoming the casualty of politics and criminality in the South-east . While the operation is well received in Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Rivers but being rejected only in some selected states of the south east, whose people’s interest it is meant to serve.

“It is most disappointing that all the wrong reasons are being adduced for maligning this operation. These include allegations that the soldiers were deployed because of the secession bid of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Movement for the Actualization of a Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Biafra Zionists Movement and other groups that are campaigning for the balkanization of Nigeria. There have also been the false claim that the military exercise is an invasion.
“The attacks on innocent Nigerians in Rivers state by hoodlums that identified as IPOB members is proof that a military operation is needed to contain extreme tendencies set in motion by IPOB’s campaign of hatred. The attacks justify our call for IPOB’s criminality to be dealt with at its birthplace before it spread to other parts of the country same way that Boko Haram terrorism did.

The youth group also lauded the Nigerian Army for its timely intervention towards tackling kidnapping, armed robbery and other criminal activities in the region.

Adeh added, “We are concerned that the Igbos, particularly those under the influence of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu’s hazy state of mind must have something up their sleeves to attract the vehement rejection of the military exercise to the extent of using it to incite nationwide crisis.

“While we had anticipated that criminals would kick against the operation, we did not envisage that they will attempt to stand truth on its head by purveying fake news. Of particular note is Kanu’s lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, who goofed by describing his client and IPOB as “innocent, unarmed and defenceless”. Such assertion is blasphemous to say the least. Such falsehood could only have been peddled by someone addicted to twisting facts for a living. Ejiofor manufactures lies and hate and churns them out at pace meant to unsettle the general public,” he added.

He appealed to the Nigerian Army not to be swayed by the campaign of calumny and blackmail against its operation.

“We similarly appeal to Nigerians in other states to please understand the severity of the issue under consideration. The IPOB fanatics are courting public sympathy, including staging attacks to provoke soldiers on their mission and it is a trick that well-meaning Nigerians must not fall for. In fact, we expect that anyone apprehended in connection with attacks on soldiers should be matched with existing Police crime database as they would be proven to be the same people behind the spate of kidnapping, armed robberies and drug dealing in the region.

“We call on the police to immediately arrest and prosecute Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, for conspiracy to breach the peace through the misrepresentation of fact. The police should also heighten its state of alertness in other states of the federation to arrest any person or group of persons that try to disrupt the peace.”

Abia: Soldiers storm Kanu father’s compound

Men of the Nigerian Army in Abia on Thursday night allegedly stormed the Afara Ukwu Umuahia countryhome of the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu allegedly leaving several people injured in the cause of their patrol.

When contacted by text message, leader of Egwueke II in Abia, Col. A.K Ibrahim told The Nation: “Our men went on patrol around there and were attacked. But am not on seat now to give details.. Much later pls Sir”.

Details of the operation was still sketchy as at press time, but the IPOB leader’s young brother, Emmanuel said the soldiers numbering over 150 with some mobile policemen stormed their residence at Afara Ukwu at about 6.45pm.

Speaking to Our Reporter after the incident, Emmanuel claimed that the soldiers who came with their trucks and APC condoned off their father’s palace before they started shooting sporadically.

According to him the shooting lasted for over 45 minutes after wish they (Soldiers) forcefully broke into the compound and opened fire on whoever was on sight.

Emmanuel said when the shooting was over, that 22 IPOB and family members including the family dog were dead.

“You recall that Nnamdi kanu had told the world just yesterday that the Nigerian Government is plotting to kill him on September 15, but they struck a day before their planned date. But we thank God they did not succeed and will never succeed.”

Emmanuel said after shooting and killing the IPOB members, the soldiers in company of the mobile policemen desecrated their father’s palace by ransacking the place but he did not say if the rampaging soldiers took away anything from the palace.

  • Of hate speech, elders and leaders

Of hate speech, elders and leaders

In those days when they were venerated as custodians of wisdom, elders dutifully rebuked children for insulting those older than them. Foul language attracted a frown. When the matter was thought to be serious, the cane surfaced with a whack on the head.

    Not anymore.

Respect and moderation have lost their meanings. Public discourse has taken on the colour of abuse. Politics has become toxic; a do-or-die affair.

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo’s warning that hate speech will be treated as terrorism has somehow dampened the vociferous push for the dismemberment of Nigeria. The argument has been downgraded to restructuring. The debates are exciting.

But what is hate speech? Is there really a clear correlation between hate speech and terrorism?

The Arewa youths who issued the Igbo an October deadline to quit the North have since withdrawn their threat. Our hearts were pounding. It was like awaiting the arrival of some hurricane. But Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu keeps opening his mouth wide.

We need to draw the line between hate speech and all that blabbing and babbling by our politicians. Besides, we should do nothing to endanger freedom of speech, which is a fundamental pillar of democracy.

Consider Senator  Isa Misau (APC, Bauchi), whom the police have been seeking to take in since he levelled some allegations against the leadership. He said officers paid as much as N2.5m for special promotion through the Police Service Commission (PSC). Furious, the police went after the retired officer and accused him of deserting the Force.

The lawmaker went ballistic. He hurled more allegations at the police and threatened to report the matter to the Senate.

Who will investigate the police? All we hear are threats against Misau, who has been accused of everything, including forgery, defamation and perjury. None of these charges has been proven.  I suspect the police may one day slam the gentleman with a charge for making hate speeches against their revered leadership.

The Senate will respond by summoning the police chief, who must come in uniform, to explain why he allowed his good offices to be used in fractions aimed at lowering  the esteem of a distinguished senator.

A bill that will hold the record of being the fastest to be passed into law seems to be on the way to the Senate. The hate speech bill has won the heart of the much respected Senate. Renowned law teacher Prof Itse Sagay had accused the lawmakers of fleecing the treasury by taking home huge salaries and allowances, which remain secret to the taxpayer. Instead of denying this with facts and figures, senators tore at him with invectives.

Unrepentant, the professor challenged the lawmakers to come clean on the allegations. They refused and accused him of making hate speeches against the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We all know that the Senate harbours our distinguished men and women of whom we are so proud. Hate speeches against them will not be allowed to gain credibility and thereby bring the lawmakers ridicule, odium and scorn from right thinking Nigerians.

Nevertheless, it won’t  be out of place to ask: when will the Senate bring down the gavel on this allegation of jumbo salaries and allowances by baring it all? Are senators afraid of the public backlash if their pay is found to be indeed outrageous? Or is it a matter of mere pride – that the salary and allowances are private and personal?  But the cash comes from the public purse, doesn’t it?

Will Sagay now be seized and hurled before the senators for alleged terrorism to test the law?

Just as Misau has stood by his allegations against the police, Senator Aisha “Mama Taraba”Alhassan has remained unshaken in her resolve to dump President Muhammadu Buhari for former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar should the latter choose to run for president in 2019. She said so on a visit to Atiku and sealed it all with an interview on the BBC Hausa Service.

Some patriots, including those who call themselves Buharists (I still don’t get what that means) , among them Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, are falling over one another to defend the President. They are calling for Alhassan’s head, accusing her of disloyalty and of making hate speeches against Buhari, who has so far demonstrated the wisdom of a clever old man in this matter. Mama Taraba remains the minister of Women Affairs. Sycophancy, indeed, has its limits.

Alhassan’s courage and sincerity in a society that lacks bold men and women and hacks down its brave ones have been praised. Hers is surely no hate speech. But many have descended on El-Rufai for showing his hand in the matter. They have gone into the archives to dig out what his former boss, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, said of him in reply to what El-Rufai wrote about him in his book, “The accidental public servant”, which many have predicted to be the forerunner of a more current volume to be titled, “The accidental governor”.

Of El-Rufai, Obasanjo wrote: ” Nasir’s penchant for reputation savaging is almost pathological…I recognised his weaknesses, the worst being his inability to be loyal to anybody or any issue consistently for long, but only to Nasir El-Rufai… My vivid recollection of him is penchant for lying, for unfair embellishment of stories and his inability to sustain loyalty for long…”

A memo El-Rufai wrote to President Buhari in which he declared the APC a failure has bobbed up from  nowhere. All this in an attempt to expound the view that of the governor, it cannot be said “he is as straight as a gun”.

So long for a Buharist and his ilk.

Just after the Mama Taraba bombshell, Atiku stoked up a fresh argument, saying he had been abandoned by the APC, which he claimed to have helped to win the 2015 election. Besides, he was obviously saying that he had been tarred – wrongly, he insists – with the brush of corruption. He challenged anybody with proof of his alleged corruption to bring it up or keep quiet forever.

Poor Atiku. So discomfited was he  that he told his traducers to purge themselves of the wrong feeling that every rich man must have made it not by  dint of hard work but by some undue advantage – fraud, to be precise.

He said he did not become the vice-president in 1999 as a pauper because he had been a successful investor after his retirement from the Customs Service. “If Atiku is a thief merely because of his resourcefulness and successful investments, my political enemies should tell Nigerians the source of their stupendous wealth,” Atiku said. He did not name his political enemies. Was the Turaki Adamawa afraid of being charged with making hate speeches?

There is no need to get emotional over these matters, Your Excellency. The hate speech law will soon be here to put the purveyors of these allegations against you in their place. You are not the only one being maligned.

The other day a friend sent me a photograph of the devastation of the hurricane that has ravaged parts of the United States with the caption: “Florida. We thank God that our own disaster is politicians defrauding us, not nature.”

Now a note of caution to all those who -without proof – accuse the Senate of harbouring criminals, liars, pedophiles, forgers and drug pushers:  Watch out. The hate speech law will soon be activated and you may face terrorism charges.

Biafra: Time to roll back the tanks

The crisis in some parts of the Southeast should not be allowed to escalate. The separatist leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is on bail, but he keeps rocking the boat through his speeches, in violation of his  bail terms. He appears to have successfully rallied behind his cause a large army of youths, some of who have sworn to go the whole hog with him.

The military has launched “Operation Python Dance” to rein in criminals in the Southeast. It has said that the action is not targeted at the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB).

A group of soldiers passing through Kanu’s home have clashed with the activists. IPOB said somebody died. The military claimed nobody died. Soldiers stormed the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) office in Umuahia, smashing work tools.

A policeman was killed yesterday in Port Harcourt.

The Igbo man is naturally endowed with skills to excel in a united Nigeria. What he should push for is an environment where he can use his God-given talents without any hinderance, and a fair share of the national patrimony. Not secession.

Boko Haram is still on the rampage. Kidnappers are on the loose. Armed robbers remain in business and poverty is rumbling through the land.  This is not the time for another national upheaval.

Let’s muffle the drums of war. Let’s roll back the tanks.

  • Don’t yield to drumbeat of war, APC to Nigerians

Don’t yield to drumbeat of war, APC to Nigerians

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has appealed to Nigerians not to yield to elements bearing the drumbeat of war in the country, saying Nigerians must instead stand up and speak with one voice for peaceful coexistence and in the interest of the present generation of Nigerians and those yet unborn.

Reacting to the recent clash between members of the Indigenous People of Biafra and the military, the party, in a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi and made available to newsmen in Abuja ask the military must adhere with globally-stipulated rules of engagements and laws governing their operations.

It condemned the attack on the premises of the Nigeria Union of Journalist in Umuahia, the Abia state capital and applauded the quick response of the army high command in tendering an apology to the affected Journalists.

The statement reads: “The All Progressives Congress (APC) calls for calm and restraint following recent reports of violent clashes linked to members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Abia and Rivers State.

“The Party also regrets the incident at the National Union of Journalist (NUJ) Secretariat in Umuahia, Abia State capital, where some journalists were assaulted. Commendably, the Nigerian Army has tendered its apology and is investigating the matter.

“While the Party insist that security agencies must adhere with globally-stipulated rules of engagements and laws governing their operations, we must allow our security agencies to conduct their constitutional roles of securing lives and property without hindrance and provocation.

“We also call on citizens, social commentators, media influencers and other stakeholders to be careful and mindful of their utterances on the clashes. Stoking tensions by inciting utterances, hate speech and all other forms of awful propaganda will only push the country to the precipice.

“When we see the devastation of the Country’s North East by Boko Haram, the 1966 Nigerian civil war and similar conflicts in other countries, we are reminded of the effects of internal strife.

“We must not yield to elements beating the drumbeats of war. We owe the peace and unity of our dear country to the present and unborn generations. We must speak and stand up for peaceful coexistence on our social media platforms, places of worship and all other public spaces we belong.

“On the backdrop of recent agitations and actions which have the potential of undermining the unity of our country and our relationship across religious and ethnic divides, the Party cautions that we must ensure that such agitations are peaceful and lawful. The Party reiterates its belief that it is in our collective interest to support and remain steadfast to the cause of a united Nigeria.”

S/East Governors flay shooting near Kanu’s residence

The Governors of the South East states Monday expressed worry over the shooting incidence that occurred on Sunday near the residence of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Umuahia which reportedly left some persons injured.

The governors regretted that the incident was coming at a time they were making concerted efforts to broker peace between federal authorities and the members of the Biafra agitators.

Speaking to Reporters on Monday in Abakaliki, the Director of Information, South East Governors Forum Secretariats, Chief Mike Udah, said that the incident in Umuahia by suspected military men has punctured the peace moves initiated by the governors.

•IPOB leader: agitation not synonymous with declaration of war

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has blamed Northern leaders for the continued agitation for a republic of Biafra.

Kanu, The Nation gathered, told South East state governors and other leaders at a meeting in Enugu on Wednesday that  for as long as the North was not ready to make any concession, his group would not also back down on its demands.

Sources close to the meeting said the IPOB leader accused Northern leaders of arrogance “whenever it comes to the issue of how to make every part of the country has a sense of belonging and ensure equal right and justice.”

He also reportedly told the Soth East leaders  that IPOB’s  agitation for a republic of Biafra does not mean a declaration of war, and wondered why some people keep talking about  war whenever Biafra is mentioned.

“We want to achieve Biafra through a peaceful path and not war,” one of the sources quoted him as saying.

The over five-hour meeting failed  to convince him from shelving his agitation.

The meeting, which had in attendance elder statesman, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, and secretary of the Eastern Consultative Assembly and leader of the Igbo Youth Movement, Evangelist Elliot Ugochukwu Uko, was primarily to persuade Nnamdi Kanu to drop the Biafra agitation and accept restructuring as the plank of his group’s agitation.

Biafra: ‘Demands by IPOB should not be absolute’

SOUTHEAST governors yesterday moved to resolve the issues surrounding the agitation for the Republic of Biafra.

They met with Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu in Enugu, Enugu State capital.

Also at the meeting were elder statesman Prof Ben Nwabueze and Igbo Youths Movement leader, Evangelist Elliot Uko.

The Chairman of the Southeast Governors’ Forum and Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi, who read a three-sentence communique said the meeting “agreed that these demands by IPOB should not be absolute”.

He added: “Rather, the governors shall immediately engage the leader of IPOB and the entire leadership of IPOB to further meetings and dialogue with a view to quickening the resolutions of all issues amicably.”

Only Ebonyi and Enugu State Governors Umahi and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi were present; Anambra State Governor Willy Obiano was represented by his deputy, Nkem Okeke.

Immediately after reading the communique, Nnamdi Kanu’s his entourage left while the governors resumed sitting.

I won’t go on exile, Nnamdi Kanu tells supporters

Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader and Radio Biafra Director Nnamdi Kanu has dared the Federal Government to re-arrest him.

He is threatening that anyone who attempts to arrest him will be crushed. Kanu spoke yesterday at the Boys Technical College (BTC) on Faulks Road in Aba North Local Government Area of Abia State.

The IPOB leader, who is being accused by the Federal Government of breaching the bail conditions,  was received by members of IPOB Faulks Road Zone I and some of the group’s sympathisers.

Describing Aba as the “Spiritual Land of Biafra”, Kanu reassured his supporters that he would not go on exile. He urged them and believers in Biafra  to be strong and resolute.

He used the forum to reiterate that there would not be election in Anambra in November or any part of “Biafra Land” even in 2019, unless the group’s clamour for referendum got the blessings of government.

Kanu who paid tribute to those reportedly killed at the National High School in Aba by security agencies said: “Where we are is Biafra land. Aba is the spiritual capital of Biafra land. We started in Aba in 2015 at CKC (Christ the King Catholic Cathedral). That day, heaven authenticated our move that IPOB will restore Biafra and that’s what we’ve come to do. We died in Aba at National High School.

“They shot and killed us in other places in Biafra land when they were protesting for my release. As our people rest in the grave, we’ll never rest until Biafra is restored. I don’t care what they say in Abuja. I don’t give a damn what they say in Lagos.

“I’m a Biafran and we are going to crumble the zoo. Some idiots who are not educated said that they’ll arrest me, and I ask them to come. I’m in Biafra land. If any of them leaves Biafra land alive know that this is not IPOB. Tell them that’s what I said.

“Tell Buhari that I’m in Aba and any person who comes to arrest Nnamdi Kanu inBiafra land will die here. I’ll never go on exile, I assure you.

“Some people talk about restructuring; are we doing restructuring of Nigeria now? Are we doing fiscal federalism? Are we doing devolution? What we want is Biafra!

“Forget all the nonsense they write about us. We are not slowing down and no man born of a woman can stop us. They thought we are joking and God gave us a simple message that no one can stop us. The movement to restore Biafra is unstoppable.

“God sent me to you, Aba people and I am giving you His message. Our veterans here, your own message is that you’ll see Biafra alive, not in death.

“The message of heaven is what I bring to you. Don’t be afraid. The plans of our enemies are not going to be actualised. The enemies are planning, but we are formidable.

“We are going to boycott Anambra State election. After Anambra 2017, in 2019, there’ll be no elections in Biafra land. Signed and sealed. My message is that there’ll not be election in Biafra land ever again until they give us date for referendum.”

Some of IPOB members who spoke to reporters at the venue said that they shunned  church to listen to their leader and a man that God destined to use to liberate the people of the Southeast and the old Eastern Region from the hands of corrupt and insensitive leaders.

They, however, vowed to join hands with Kanu to ensure that Biafra was realised, no matter how long it would take.

But two political leaders said that Kanu, like other Nigerians, cannot be above the law.

Chief Chekwas Okorie, the national Chairman of the United Progressive Party (UPP) said

“Kanu is a citizen of Nigeria, who is equally entitled to the freedom every citizen enjoys. But as far as the law is concerned, he cannot resist arrest if the need arises. He cannot say nobody can arrest him and no citizen of this country can say so as well. As a citizen, he deserves his freedom which is equally guaranteed under the law, but that is not to say that he is above arrest when he acts against the state. ”

His National Chairman of Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) counterpart Prof. Bankole Okuwa said:  “Again, I think Kanu is ignorant of the law. He can be arrested if he is a trouble maker. He can be arrested if he is going to cause trouble in the country. The Federal Government can order his arrest. What the government needs to do is to get a court order. Kanu statement came because people don’t obey the law.

“They don’t follow what the law says, I must say that politicians create all the problem because most of the politicians are lawless. The government can get him arrested, the Attorney-General can get that from the court and he would be arrested. “
