    Singer Goldie dies at 29

Sensational singer, and Nigeria’s representative at the last edition of Big Brother Africa (BBA), Goldie Harvey  is dead. She died yesterday at the age of 29.

Reports say the singer, who just returned from the Grammy awards in US, died a few hours after, at the Reddington Hospital, Victoria Island. “She was full of life upon her return, but suddenly, something went tragically wrong,” said a source, who added that she died in the arms of her best friend, Denrele Edun, former presenter with Sound City music channel.

Kenny Ogungbe, her label boss, could not be reached on telephone as at the time of this report, but Ellam A. Abass, Artiste and Repertoire Manager at Kennis Music, confirmed that the artiste was indeed, dead.

Details of her death is still sketchy as at the time of this report.

As a musician, Goldie started her career in London, with a pop rock group. Her impact in the last BBA House was remarkable, in view of her betrayal by Kenyan Housemate, Prezzo, with whom she had an intimate moment.

“I can’t define my relationship with Prezzo, but I do know that in the house I came to care for him very much. He was the closest person to me in the house. I never saw any of these things that people outside saw. I am almost not believing it somewhat, but I hold no grudges against him. I still think he’s a great individual and at the end of the day, such is life,” the singer had said in an interview after her eviction from the house.

One of Goldie’s strong wishes was to raise her late mum from death, this, she said to The Nation in a recent interview.

  • Big Brother Africa 2013 underway

Ahead of the eighth edition of Africa’s popular social reality TV show, Big Brother Africa, slated for May 26, Electronic Media Network (M-Net), organisers of the series, have begun a process of enlisting Housemates for the show. The show stakes USD 300 000 for a would-be winner.

Nigerian participants won the competition back-to-back when Kevin Pam, Uti Nwachukwu and Karen Igho clinched the prizes in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

The Managing Director of M-Net Africa, Biola Alabi, said entry is open to persons above 21, who are citizens of one of the participating countries and who either have a valid passport or will be able to obtain one by the end of March.

Participating countries include: Angola, Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Fourteen countries enlisted for the competition last year. One of them, Liberia, has been substituted for Ethiopia in this year’s edition. The replacement, according to AfricaMagic and series producers, Endemol South Africa, is to rotate certain countries into and out of the format. They said the reason for this is to ensure that a wide range of countries can be included in the different editions of the series.

Big Brother Africa on AfricaMagic next year

In addition to its first ever AfricaMagic Viewers Choice Awards which it is creating in association with MultiChoice, AfricaMagic has confirmed that it will also screen a new season of the hit reality super-series Big Brother Africa (BBA).

Exactly a decade after Africa pioneered the world’s first-ever continental Big Brother , the show will return to DStv and GOtv screens next year with more of the must-watch entertainment, drama and excitement that it’s famous for. And once again, there is a secret twist that producers have worked on to ensure that the new season will capture audience attention once more!

“The demand from audiences for BBA continues undimmed. In some ways it really is astonishing to see the enthusiasm for this particular series, but in other ways it is to be expected,” says M-Net Africa Managing Director Biola Alabi.

“Viewers want to see unscripted television, as it happens, with normal people that they can relate to dealing with completely familiar emotional concepts – happiness, frustration, success, failure, hope, anxiety, friendship, opportunity and of course, love. Big Brother continues to be a ratings sensation from Australia to India, and in Africa, for exactly this reason. And the format’s flexibility is a producers dream because you can do something different every time,” she stated.

Asked if the new season will be fresh, fun entertainment, producers Endemol SA are confident of another successful edition.

“We are delighted with the new concept that has been developed for the upcoming show,” confirms Endemol MD Sivan Pillay.

“Every year as soon as we know that we are going ahead with a new season, we head into a creative brainstorming session and every year, ideas just go racing around the room. Our teams enjoy the show as much as audiences our audiences do and it shows on screen. And this year, I have a feeling that audiences are going to fall in love with the idea!”
