    FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup: Falconets set for big win against Mexico

    With the FIFA Under 20 Women’s World Cup underway in Canada, the Falconets have promised to leave no stone unturned in their attempt to secure a remarkable outing for Nigeria at the Mundial.

    Nigeria is one of Africa’s representatives at the tournament and having made six appearances at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the Falconets are determined to put on a brillant performance this time round.

    The mood in the team’s camp is that of a eagerness, as all the players are in fine health and there are no injury concerns. The players are all anxious to know who will make the team list for the Falconets’ first match.

    Falconts’ coach Peter Dedevbo said he remains confident of the calibre of players at his disposal and that he has assembled the best legs that can take on any team in Canada.

    “I have assembled some of the best players in the country, they are smart and experienced. Bringing players from the Under -17 team that went to Costa Rica and others from the Super Falcons. This has brought competition to the team,” Dedevbo revealed.

    He confirmed that the team had played a couple of friendly matches as build up to the tournament. “I’m aware of the previous records of the team and I’m confident this time around, my target is to bring home the trophy,” Dedevbo said.

    Speaking on the Falconets’ first match against Mexico, the former Flamingoes coach said the players were physically and mentally ready for the match. “I’m confident with the level of training we have had, mark my words the team will make Nigeria proud”.

    Ahead of the Mexico encounter, team captain, Patience Okaeme, promised that the team would do its best to get victory which she said would boost the psyche of the players.

    “We owe it to ourselves to make Nigeria proud by winning not only our first match but all our matches,” Okaeme said.

    Her team mates Sarah Nnodim and Courtney Dike said the players would play as a team to ensure victory.

    “We are happy the team is not built around particular players, that unity will give us the needed victory. We urge Nigerians to pray for the good outing of the team,” Dike said.

    The Nigeria/Mexico match comes up tonight at 8pm in Canada (12 midnight Nigerian time). The match will be played at Moncton Stadium.

    Nigerian striker Daniel Chima Chukwu scored his fifth goal in the Norwegian league yesterday.

    It was on his return to Molde first team after he was an unused substitute in the team’s 1-1 draw at Gorica in a UEFA Champions league tie last week.

    Molde beat closest rivals Rosenborg 3-1 on Sunday with Chima finding the back of the net in the 55th minute to give his team a 2-0 lead.

    Molde remain top of the league with 42 points from 17 games, while Rosenborg slipped to fourth with 30 points from same number of matches.

    Nigeria World Cup star Ahmed Musa shone as he provided three assists for CSKA Moscow to trounce OFK Beograd of Serbia 4-0 in a pre-season friendly.

    The former JUTH FC of Jos player assisted Cote d’Ivoire star Seydou Doumbia for two of his three goals and he lasted 55 minutes before he was substituted.

    Ahmed Musa told AfricanFootball.com it was a good test for the Russian champions.

    “It was a good test,though we won 4-0,but our opponents put in their best, but we found the formula to break their defence,” Musa said.

    “Though I didn’t score a goal, I gave three assists and I am happy we won the game and played well.”

    The ex-VVV Venlo forward joined his team last week for pre-season training after he was given an extended break after playing at the World Cup in Brazil.

    Former Nigeria youth international Kehinde Fatai has told AfricanFootball.com he hopes clinching the Romanian Super Cup will mean greater glory for him in the new season.

    The former Farul Constanta striker marked his return to Astra Giurgiu after a loan spell at Belgian team Club Brugge with a major trophy.

    Astra Giurgiu won the Romanian Super Cup after they defeated league champions Steau Bucharest 5-4 via penalties after the game ended in a 1-1 draw on Friday night.

    “I am very happy to be part of this victory party and the match,” Fatai told AfricanFootball.com

    “It was a great way to start after my return from Belgium. I hope and believe this will be the beginning of great things for the club and we the players.”

    Gabriel Adikwu scored a brace as 3SC trounced Silver Sports of Osogbo 5-1 in a pre-season game in Ibadan on Tuesday.

    It was the 13th pre-season game played by Shooting Stars and Adikwu promised to score more goals when the league begins.

    “Last season, I didn’t start the season with the club but this season going to be different as I have vowed to score many goals for 3SC,” Adikwu told MTNFootball.com.

    “My best is yet to come but this season is going to be different as we are ready for the league. I can’t wait for the league to kick off.”

    Silver Sports opened the scoring in the eighth minutes, before striker Adikwu fired with a double and Chima Akas increased the tally with a long range shot to make it 3-1 in the first half.

    Gata Ismail Adesina made it 4-1 in the second half after he converted a penalty and Tony Edjomarigwe wrapped up the big win for ‘The Oluyole Warriors’.
