  • Bigwigs honour Tunde Obe at 50

WITH live performances by the Dejavu Band, 9ice, Ruggedman, Yinka Davies, Essence, Gbenga Adeyinka, KSB and Tee A, there is no gainsaying that Tunde Obe’s 50th birthday celebration was a topnotch event.

It was an exclusive event held at Radisson Blu Hotel, GRA, Ikeja, with close friends and family of the celebrant, Tunde and his wife cum band mate at T.W.O, Wunmi Obe.

At an event where T.W.O themselves performed, there were as many entertainers as there were business executives, politicians, ambassadors and media executives. It was a night of class and glamour.

The event was not your regular birthday party but a family affair as everyone took turns on stage to deliver a speech or to perform.

Teju Babyface, Gordons, Gbenga Adeyinka, Yinka Davies, Yeni Kuti, 9ice, Dayo Adeneye, Ruggedman, Essence, Kenny Saint Best (KSB), Tee A, Ken Caleb Olumese, Samuel Olatunji, Seye Kehinde, Azuh Arinze, Gbenga Adebija, Ayeni Adekunle, Kunle Bakare, Segun Obe and a host of others are few names from the long roll call at the event.

The event was a celebration of three major milestones in the couple’s lives. 30 years of being performing artistes, 20 years of being happily married and 50 years of Tunde Obe with the latter getting more of the spotlight.

Tunde Obe was full of gratitude to God for clocking 50 and jokingly said he is now a man.

“I am so excited that I am 50. I am now a man. I have seen people who were cut down in their prime but here I am celebrating the big 50. I am very grateful. It’s not just that but also, celebrating 20 years of our marriage and 30 years of music together. These are really big deals and I am so grateful to everyone who came out to show us support. We didn’t make noise about it because we wanted it to be a family affair and as you can see, what happened here tonight could only have been achieved because everyone here has a strong connection with us,” he said.

Edo PDP bigwigs join APC at mega rally

TOP Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftains across the 18 councils yesterday defected to the ruling All Progressive Congress APC).

The PDP chieftains and their supporters, led by Felix Akhabue, defected to the APC at a mega rally at the Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium ahead of Saturday’s             council election.

Ten political parties are participating in the election, PDP is boycotting.

Akhabue, who was a former chairman of Esan West, said they dumped the PDP because ‘Obaseki is a performing governor.’

He said: “We want to ?remove Esan West from the hands of the opposition. That is why we have resolved that in any election henceforth, APC will win.”

APC’s National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, who received the defectors, congratulated them for seeing the light.

Oyegun said the APC always opened its doors to those who passionate about the nation.

Oyegun said: “I congratulate the governor in Edo State; he is a silent worker. I also want to congratulate the man who laid the foundation, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.”

Governor Godwin Obaseki told the crowd that the rally was to present new leaders to replicate development at the state level at the grassroots.

He said: “They are going to move the wake and see mantra to the local governments. We want to show that Nigeria is an APC country and that Edo is an APC state. We want to assure the President that he has 1.2m votes from Edo State in the presidential elections. We want to assure Edo people that after Saturday elections, they will have ‘wake and see’ councillors and local government area chairmen.”

“For the first time, the PDP saw defeat coming and abandoned the war. I congratulate former Governor of the state, Adams Oshiomhole. He laid the foundation for the revolutionary politics in Edo State. He gave them a deafening blow and now they have surrendered.”

Oshiomhole said the APC was just getting better and stronger.

He urged the people to reject the PDP in 2019, ‘since they said local government election is too small for them’.

Among those at the rally are Minister of Youth and Sports Solomon Dalung; Ondo State Deputy Governor Alfred Agboola-Ajayi; ex-Governor Oserheimen Osunbor; APC’s National Auditor George Moghalu; former factional National Deputy Chairman of PDP Dr. Cairo Ojougbo; and APC’s Southsouth National Vice Chairman Ntufam Hilliard.

  • Bigwigs gather for Buruji Kashamu

It was a gathering of titans in Ijebu Igbo, Ogun State, last Saturday. It was, however, not for the purpose of the legendary clash of titans. Rather, the gathering was meant to be a convivial atmosphere as political heavyweights and other associates from the social scene converged for the 59th birthday of Senator Buruji Kashamu.

The jam-packed venue was filled with family members, friends and associates who came in droves to celebrate the big day with the controversial senator. On his part, Buruji, who represents Ogun East at the National Assembly, was all smiles as he weaved in and out of the crowd, sharing jokes and small talks with all and sundry.

As the head of Kabsal Group, a conglomerate with interests in automobile, property, oil and gas, hospitality and investment services, Buruji’s fame spreads as far as neighbouring Benin Republic. Hence the calibre of guests who flocked to Ijebu Igbo in honour of the titan politician.

  • A Rare Gathering of Bigwigs

    TARABA THIS WEEK

It was a rare assembly of political, traditional, academic and retired military bigwigs. They came from all parts of the country and beyond. The masses of the people from every community in Jukun land were also there. As usual, yours sincerely, a typical reporter of the old breed genre, was there on duty with his ears and eyes wide open to report the events faithfully as they happened. I’m talking about the three major events of the previous week which happened in Wukari and Takum in Taraba State and in which Taraba State Governor, Arc Darius Dickson Ishaku played the important role as chief host and keynote speaker.

What eventually turned out to be one of Ishaku’s recent most tasking schedules started Wednesday March 15, with an unexpected trip to Abuja for the meeting of state governors with President Muhammadu Buhari the next day. He returned to Jalingo Thursday evening in company of General T.Y Danjuma  (Rtd), one of Nigeria’s most respected statesmen who is better known and adored back home as “Father of Taraba.” Both men accompanied by their wives – Barr. Anna Ishaku and Senator Daisi Danjuma headed for Wukari as early as 7.30 am Friday, March 17, for the events.

Wukari was a two-in-one event that lasted for two days. The first was the 40th anniversary of the Aku Uka, Dr Shekarau Angyu Masa-Ibi, on the prestigious traditional stool of his fore-fathers while the second was the maiden convocation ceremony of Kwararafa University. Wukari, I was told, had never seen a crowd of that magnitude in its entire history. All hotels in town and in neighbouring towns such as Ibi and Donga were fully booked and open fields and classrooms in the numerous schools in the town became temporary homes for those who couldn’t find accommodation. The oozing sound of music and dancing from the city announcing the commencement of celebration could be heard five kilometres from the town while the ceremony lasted that day.

The newly constructed convocation arena of the Kwararafa University was the venue for the two events. The Aku Uka’s anniversary was a unique outing and display of the complete paraphernalia of Jukun culture and tradition. As early as 6 am, men and women half clad in Jukun native attires hit the roads on foot for the long but slow procession from the city centre to the Convocation Square. They were accompanied by masquerades, and I counted no less than 50 of them, amidst singing drumming and dancing. Several state governors, deputy governors, ministers, members of the National and state assemblies and a powerful delegation of traditional rulers led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Dr Mohammed Sa’ad Abubakar, who was also chairman of the occasion, graced the event.

A loud ovation announced the arrival of Governor Ishaku at the arena at about 10.30am and that also signalled the beginning of the day’s proceedings. From thence, it was music, dancing and speeches. President Muhammmadu Buhari who was represented by the Minister of Sports, Mr Solomon Lalong, praised the Aku Uka for living up the expectations of his people, most especially during the peak of the serial communal crises inTaraba State in 2013 when he mobilised the people in support of government’s peace initiative.

Governor Ishaku, in his speech, eulogised the Aku Uka as a man of impeccable character and epitome of creativity and good leadership. He said under the traditional leadership of the traditional ruler Wukari had grown rapidly to become the centre of education and learning with two universities and a campus of the National Open University. The need to strengthen peace that has been achieved by his administration featured elaborately in his address. He urged all Tarabans to see the promotion and sustenance of peace as a responsibility they owe themselves and the state. “Let us promote those things that unite us and give no room to those that divide us. We must continue to foster and strengthen our friendship with our neighbours”, he said.

The convocation was yet another historic event attended by many of those high profile personalities who graced the event of the previous day. Kwararafa University is a private institution established in 2006 to help facilitate access to higher education for children of the area. Ishaku, a foremost Nigerian architect, drew the master plan for the institution. More than 2000 students were conferred with degrees and diplomas in the various departments. Eminent Nigerians such as Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar, Daisi Danjuma, Prof … Okojie and Alhaji Ahmadu Aliyu Oga Onawo who is the Chancellor of the university were conferred with honorary doctorate degrees.

In his speech at the event, Governor Ishaku advised the graduating students to see their graduation as the beginning and not the end of a journey. “For those of you graduating today, the journey begins today. You will be tested and you must be prepared to apply all that you have learnt”, he said. He urged the students to aim at the highest and the top always and “you will learn more as you continue to practise what you have learnt from school.” General Danjuma who had earlier been requested to take over the institution and assume its ownership demanded in his speech for a formal letter of offer and the conditions that must be met to enable him take a decision on the request.

From the convocation ground in Wukari, Governor Ishaku’s convoy moved to Takum to await the grand finale of the 2017 Beth-El Conference of the Christian Reformed Church – Nigeria scheduled for the next day. It is an annual evangelical event which draws participants from all parts of Taraba and its neighbouring states. The entry of Governor Ishaku and Anna, his wife, into the large arena that Sunday morning of March 19, was an act of great happiness and exhilaration for the over 20,000 participants. They rose from their seats, waved and cheered as Taraba’s First Family alighted from their car and took their seats.

The event was an opportunity for the church leaders to express their gratitude to Ishaku for all his achievements in road construction, the provision of water and the remarkable improvement in electricity. But they were most impressed – and every speaker of day did not forget to mention it – about peace that is being enjoyed now in the state and without which their gathering for the event would have been impossible this year. Ishaku told them that he was committed to changing the very ugly situation of things he met on assumption of office. “We are doing a lot for you. We have done 100 boreholes in various communities across the state. This year, we are doing 150 more. We have built several roads despite the poor financial situation.” He said Chanchagi – Takum road has been rehabilitated to make driving on it smoother. The road is to be awarded for reconstruction soon.

He told them that the Taraba State he inherited on assumption of office was a state in pieces, rendered so by the crisis of that time and that he was happy that the state is now in peace. That portion of his speech saw the entire congregation rising again on their feet in appreciation of this achievements. He told them that he was not unaware of the fact that he was not liked by some people in the state because he was not prepared to put the state’s money on the table to be shared. “Let me assure you. I will never share government’s money to individuals.”

He called for patience even in the face of extreme provocation by the Fulani herdsmen. “Retaliation will lead to bloodshed. We don’t want that. Give government the chance to resolve such problems. That is the only way we can guarantee the sustenance of peace that we have won for the state.”

  • Bigwigs relocate families over fears of abduction

Things have fallen apart in the once-secure world of wealthy families. The centre can no longer hold as their hearts are gripped by fear at the exploits of daredevil kidnappers for whom barbed wire gates and sophisticated alarm systems have proved no deterrent. The conscienceless men of the underworld now have no regard for position or status in carrying out their horrendous and dastardly acts.

Consequent on the foregoing, political bigwigs and captains of industry as well as celebrities have begun to troop out of the country with their families in a bid to escape the evil clutches of the ransom traders. The troubled elites are also restricting the movements of their children and family members as they now hire well-trained security experts to tail them and their relatives.

Some of them have had to put their faith in imported state of the art monitoring and alarm systems installed in their palatial homes. But all these have not proved totally successful in checking the incursions of kidnappers who often lie in wait for these big men and their children like wolves patiently waiting for lambs.

Bigwigs honour Emiefiele at mum’s burial

Burial ceremony took on a whole new meaning when the mother of the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele, was laid to rest in Agbor, Delta State, last Saturday. Not only did Emefiele give his mother a befitting burial, the ceremony turned out to be a gathering of who-is-who in Nigeria as a presidential delegation, members of the National Assembly, numerous state governors and business moguls stormed the event.

Bigwigs took the day off to pay their last respects to the mother of one of the most powerful men in Nigeria. The Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh, who delivered the sermon at the funeral service, admonished Nigerians to jettison all divisive tendencies and work earnestly for the peace and unity of the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s delegation was led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Babachir Lawal. Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State was joined by many other state governors, including Adams Oshiomole (Edo), Ben Ayade (Cross River), Willy Obiano (Anambra), Emmanuel Udom (Akwa Ibom), Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo), Rauf Aregbesola (Osun) as well as the deputy governor of Benue State.

Agbor was literally transformed with the presence of eminent people that converged on it. The guests included former President Olusegun Obasanjo; representative of the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara, who was represented by the Deputy Minority Leader of the House.

Members of the business community at the ceremony included the Chairman and CEO of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote; oil magnate and Chairman of Forte Oil, Mr. Femi Otedola; Chairman, Zenith Bank, Mr. Jim Ovia, and many other captains of industry.

  • Bigwigs honour Oyinlola at daughter’s wedding

Bigwigs honour Oyinlola at daughter’s wedding

When William F. Halsey might not have had Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola in mind when he said that there are no great men but great challenges, that ordinary men are forced by circumstances to meet, but the former Osun State governor has done enough to put Hasley on his toes. Last Saturday, Oyinlola proved the responsible father that he is as his daughter, Oyindamola, walked down the aisle.

It also came as no surprise that political heavyweights, business moguls, fashion icons and pillars of high society were at the wedding of the ex-governor’s daughter in large numbers. Dignitaries at the wedding included the wife of former President Umaru Yar’Adua, Turai; Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode; Otunba Adekunle Ojora; former Ekiti State governor, Engr. Segunn Oni; the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and other leading lights in the society.

Bigwigs honour Aregbesola at daughter’s wedding

The mother is usually the better dresser on her daughter’s wedding day, but the day is usually more memorable for the father. It is the day that he and his daughter are ‘divorced’ from each other. This might be the reason why Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola, gave his daughter, Shakirat Argbesola, out in marriage in a quiet but classy wedding.

Like a newly enthroned empress, Shakirat glowed as she gyrated to every beat that boomed from the speakers. It was indeed a memorable day for the Aregbesolas and their in-laws as guests testified to the excitement that enveloped the atmosphere.

Among the numerous dignitaries that graced the occasion were Oyo State governor, Abiola Ajimobi; former Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Dele Alake; Senator Olorunnibe Mamora and Oviation magazine publisher, Dele Momodu.

  • Bigwigs’ offspring try their fathers’ shoes

Bigwigs’ offspring try their fathers’ shoes

While some people work tirelessly and are still not sure of what the future has for them, others simply have fortune thrust on their laps. Being the child of a wealthy and influential personality has a way of opening doors. That is why many children of political figures have golden tickets in their diapers from the moment they are born.

Celebrity Watch can reveal that many children of established politicians will be cashing in on their fathers’ influence to vie for public offices in the 2015 elections. They include the likes of Chinedu Orji, son of Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State and founder of Ochendo Youth Foundation; Awwal Tukur, son of the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur; Mohammed Babangida, son of former Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida; Mohammed Abacha, son of former military ruler, Gen. Sani Abacha and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Jnr, son of the late Biafran leader, Dim Odimegu Ojukwu.

There are also others like Eghosa Ogbemudia, the second son of former military governor of Mid-Western State, Chief Samuel Ogbemudia; Elechi Elechi Jnr and many others.

While the aforementioned people cannot be denied their merits and worth as individuals, there is no denying the fact that whatever height they have attained has a direct correlation with their fathers’ achievements.
